Makers Market will return to library
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will host its fourth annual Makers Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The community event will feature many local vendors and craftspeople, who will have a variety of wares and handmade items available to purchase inside the library and under tents in the lawn. Regular library services will not be available during the Makers Market.
Shoppers will have an opportunity to browse a multitude of goods at the Makers Market, including crocheted accessories, printed greeting cards, framed artworks, handmade birdhouses, jewelry, stained-glass items, home decorations, knitted clothing items and charcuterie boards.
“The Makers Market is an opportunity for people to do some early gift shopping for unique items.”
Joe On the Go Coffee Co. will have a tent on-site to sell coffee and other beverages as well as muffins and scones. Chili and macaroni and cheese will be available to purchase from a stand operated by the Friends of the Strasburg-Heisler Library.
Vendors will also sell edible goods such as homemade jams, jellies and sauces.
“The whole point of the Makers Market is to show the community that the library is here in ways beyond books and media. We are a community connection,” said Kristin Fernitz, director of the Strasburg-Heisler Library.
The primary goal of the Makers Market is to utilize the library as a space for community members to share ideas and get to know

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Fall Fest from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The free community celebration will feature a variety of fall-themed activities for children, complimentary refreshments and prizes, and it will benefit LUMC’s food bank, Blessings Pantry. Free hot dogs, chips, popcorn, hot chocolate and coffee will be available to guests while supplies last. In the event of rain, the event will take place inside LUMC. Although Fall Fest will be free to attend, LUMC asks guests to bring a nonperishable food item to support

Success in the business world revolves around opportunity. Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) not only seeks to provide opportunities for students, but also assists them with skills that will make the most out of those opportunities. They are opportunities that have the potential to be life altering.
“We are always looking at workforce data to align our majors to the needs of the workforce,” said Pedro Rivera, who’s been TSCT’s president for four years. “We want our students to have careers. Everyone who graduates from here is employable for a lifetime. When someone can earn a living wage with one or two years of education and with little or no debt, they have more time to be mothers and fathers, to be civically

each other. The annual event offers artisan crafters and artists an opportunity to talk about the things they are most passionate about, and it serves as a platform for budding creators to display their work and make connections in the community.
“The Makers Market is an opportunity for people to do some early gift shopping for unique items,” said Fernitz. “People can chat about their interests or ask how an artist got started. You don’t always get the opportunity to do that when shopping; it’s a unique time to talk to the person who made the item
you’re buying.”
Although many seasoned artists often participate in the Makers Market, the event does not require vendors to provide proof of sales, previously attended events or a website, making it accessible to newer crafters. In addition to paying a small fee to reserve a space, the only requirement for vendors is that items sold at their stand have been handmade by the crafter behind the counter.

minded and to engage with their churches.”
Located at 750 E. King St., Lancaster, TSCT offers 24 two-year associate degrees and four oneyear certificate degrees in pursuits like electrical technology, architecture, welding, carpentry, auto mechanics and masonry.
“We have offerings for anyone at any stage of life,” said Rivera. “We’re preparing you to be a learner and preparing you to be skilled in your workforce, and we’re preparing you to be a leader. We want you to grow and be prosperous and have a career.”
There are 1,470 students enrolled at TSCT for the fall semester, and they are all Pennsylvania residents. About half live in dorms on campus while the other half commute.
“Our students are about as dynamic and diverse as the commonwealth is,” said Rivera. “They come here with their eyes wide
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done
to save your community and your country.

open. The students who come here know what they want to do with their lives. Most of them have done their research. They come here, and they’re focused. When we bring all of these students from different backgrounds together, it’s amazing to see how quickly they begin to work together. To be successful, you have to be able to work in small groups.”
Nearly 95% of TSCT students stay in Pennsylvania after they graduate. Almost 97% of TSCT graduates are placed in jobs before or right after they leave the institution.
Many students receive financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships.
“Most of these kids are just like me, first-generation college students,” said Rivera. “They are looking to change their own trajectory and the trajectories of their whole families. I see them walk into this college for their first days, I see them develop confidence and I see them graduate. When you get to see firsthand how you’re changing lives, that’s incredible.”
TSCT is named for the Lancaster resident who bequested the funds
to start it in his will. It opened in 1905 to provide an education in academics and trades for orphaned youths, and it became an accredited college in 1991. In additions to academics, TSCT offers its students extracurricular activities like clubs and intercollegiate athletics and operates a campus clothing bank, a food bank and a toiletry bank.
Thaddeus Stevens was a congressman and champion of freedom and equality who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.
“Our namesake is very important to us,” said Rivera. “Everything we do revolves around our values. Over the years, our majors have changed, our campus has changed and it’s become a much more inclusive campus. We take our responsibilities to the community very seriously. We want our students to be prosperous. We want to give every single person who walks through that door an opportunity to be successful.”

Blessings Pantry. Blessings Pantry provides short-term, emergency food assistance to families and individuals who reside in the Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor school districts. The pantry, which is located at LUMC, is open from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and on the first and third Saturdays of every month, as well as from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. No appointment is required to receive food
items. For more information, call 717-464-4161.
Activities will include a bounce house, barrel train rides and a station where children can make autumnal crafts. Fall Fest will also feature multiple stations to offer games such as pumpkin golf, football toss, basket toss and goldfish pingpong. A pumpkin patch containing 150 pumpkins donated by Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will be open for children to pick their own pumpkins and decorate them with stickers and markers. Attendees will receive a stamp card when they arrive for Fall Fest. Participants will receive a stamp after they complete a game; once the card is filled with a stamp from each game station, it may be
exchanged for an item at the prize table. Prizes will include small, Halloween-themed items such as toys and other knick-knacks.
This is the fourth year LUMC has held Fall Fest, a tradition started
by church members Sarah Short and her mother, Mary Martz. The mother and daughter, who are long-standing members of the congregation at LUMC, decided to

Mennonite Life to host author
Lucinda J. Kinsinger will discuss her book, “Anything But Simple: My Life as a Mennonite,” in the Community Room at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
“Anything But Simple” is the memoir of a young woman’s rich church tradition, lively family life, and longing for a meaningful future within her Mennonite faith. As a schoolteacher in a small Mennonite school in rural Wisconsin, Kinsinger wears long dresses and a prayer covering but also uses Facebook and a cellphone. In her memoir, Kinsinger explores questions such as “Why would a young woman with access to modern technology remain within a sheltered community like the Plain Mennonites?” and “How can someone with an eye for beauty and a sometimes sardonic wit stay within a tradition that values discipline and submission and uniformity?”
In addition to being an author, Kinsinger is a columnist for ”Anabaptist World” and a blogger at www.lucindaj

get involved with the church’s children’s ministry team after Short became a mother. Shortly after Martz and Short joined the ministry team, Short proposed starting a new tradition of hosting an annual community celebration in autumn. The inaugural Fall Fest took place in October 2021, and the event has grown every year in both the number of attendees and variety of activities offered.
“Last year, we were worried about attendance because we had to move inside due to the rain. But there were huge lines down the hallways for games, and we had a pretty great turnout,” Short said. “(Fall Fest) has gotten bigger every year, and more and more people get involved and help plan everything. It’s one of our favorite events.”

Strasburg Heritage Society posts meeting
The Strasburg Heritage Society will meet on Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. There is no cost to attend.
Christopher Scott will speak on ”Before Strasburg Township: Local Land Ownership in the Early 1700s.” Before the formation of Lancaster County in 1729, there was Strettleton Township, a 5-square-mile tract of land that straddled Pequea Creek. This land falls within present-day Strasburg and West Lampeter townships. Scott will present newly discovered information on the settlement and property ownership within this tract of land, tracing the rights from William Penn’s grant in 1681 through all the pioneers who purchased plots when the tract was subdivided in 1731. A detailed overlay of the original survey with a modern map will allow attendees to see which current properties lie within the historic area. Those who live within the boundaries will learn about their shared legacy of land ownership through the early 1700s.
Scott, a resident of West Lampeter Township, recently published a book on his research into the history of his property. It was through his efforts that he discovered the reference to Strettleton Township. The book not only tells the history of the property, but also provides an account of the historical research process that may be of interest to amateur historians or genealogists.
Museum sets “Trains and Treats”
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Trains and Treats on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is recommended for children ages 3 to 12 and is included in the regular museum admission.
Children will follow the Treat Trail set up in the museum, where they will visit historic locomotives, railroad cars, and interactive exhibits. They may pick up a treat bag when they arrive and collect a variety of nut-free candy and small, non-food items at each stop along the Treat Trail. Attendees may wear costumes.
