Stage actor Lanny Millette is making his directorial debut with the latest Promise Players production, “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase,” which will be performed nine times between Friday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. “It is definitely challenging to be the director. There’s a lot more time involved - I’ve been busy recruiting sound and lighting technicians - and now I’m responsible for all aspects of the play,” Millette remarked. Millette started preparing for the production by reading through the script by Pat Cook an estimated 12 times even before auditions were scheduled. “I’m enjoying (the directorial process),” Millette said. “If you

pick the right actors, it comes together on its own.” He noted that the actors were nearly ready to go offbook by the second week in October. “The actors I have are giving life to their characters. I just see it getting better and better by show time,” he added. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” is a comedy drama involving Uncle George Plunkett (Wayne Rhinier) and his family members. The clan patriarch has invited the family to spend a weekend in his rustic cabin, where he surprises them by reading his will. The biggest surprise, however, is that a suitcase holding $480,000 is apparently hidden somewhere on the property. The family members react with pettiness, slander, and greed before being confronted with their bad behavior, but in a way that Millette hopes audience will find humorous. See “Uncle George’s Suitcase” pg 4

With the proceeds from each production, Promise Players gives a sizeable donation to a nonprofit organization that is doing good in a way that is related to the respective show. This time, the beneficiary will be the Lancaster-based A Week Away Foundation, which was founded by the late Caleb Walker in order to provide people with life-threatening illnesses a feeling of normalcy and hope. One of the getaway options is to a rural area. Millette pointed out that the play is located in a cabin, and there are some mental health overtones as well. “We think (A Week Away) is doing a great thing, he remarked. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26; Saturday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 3. The Strasburg Heritage Society will host a wheat weaving workshop focused on making straw stars on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 28 E. Main St., Strasburg. Leading the workshop will Linda D. Beiler of Honey Brook. Wheat weaving is an ancient folk art that celebrated a successful harvest. Straw designs were created at the end of harvesting with a belief in a spirit that caused the grain to grow. To provide a resting place for this growing spirit, a weaving was made from the last grain cut or a choice bundle of grain.

Boy’s XC and Golf Team Secure Section Titles by Mona Steinhauer

Last week two Pioneer squads secured section titles. The boys’ cross country team, on Tuesday, defeated Annville-Cleona, 18-47, and Lancaster Mennonite, 28-33, to secure their first ever Section Two title while the golf team followed up with a sweep in their last league meet of the season, securing their eighth section crown. On the road Tuesday, Jansen Miller and David Helms finished 3rd (18:16) and 4th (19:16) overall, following two

Blazers to the finish line and placing ahead of another. But the Pioneers’ Daniel McMichael (19:23), Thomas Sellers (19:48), Zach Kingsley (20:03) and Luka Vranich (20:03) packed it in after that, securing 7th through 11th, respectively, to sweep the competition. Jacob Long (14th), Nathan Eberly (15th), Jared Chin (18th), Grant Kuhn (19th) and Nick Smucker (20th) added top 20 finishes. The girls’ team pulled out a 27-28 thriller over Annville-Cleona and topped the Blazers 27-37. Micah

Pioneer goalie Calieb Wigley deflects an E-town shot over the crossbar for one of his five saves during a Section Three contest at Lampeter-Strasburg last Monday.

It was there that L-S had the last say. Julz Garber picked up a ball that was coming out of the circle and sent it to Daisy Frank, whose timing was perfect. She dribbled toward the keeper, pulled to her right and slammed it to the back of the cage at the 2:55 mark. Wednesday the Pioneers hosted Cocalico for senior night and collected their second win of the week, 3-1. Chloe Blantz scored early, Summer Peters tipped one in late, and Cocalico scored in between for a 2-1 Pioneer lead at the break. Smecker’s second half goal provided a little insurance. Frank added two assists. “All seven seniors started and played half of the game, said Swarr. “That left my top two scorers (Blantz and Frank) out for longer than usual. Chloe entered the game and 30 seconds later found the back of the cage. Despite a 0-0 first half score against a struggling McCaskey squad, L-S rallied with three second half goals to earn their third win of the week. Frank, Garber and Smecker handled the scoring with Blantz recording one assist. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team capped their regular season with a hardfought 0-0 tie against Ephrata (16-2-1) last Wednesday night at home. They finish 4-4-2 in Section Two and are 7-6-4 overall. “That sure felt like a win, said head coach Emily Lebo. “Considering they have won all but two games this year and we have been struggling to get in the positive, I was very happy with our performance. It could have easily been a win had we not had two

shots hit the post. “As a team, they all stood out defensively, she added. “I do feel that we have one of the strongest defensive teams in all of the L-L League. Everyone has come together and we are high pressure defense all over the

L-S slowed the bleeding with a 73yard pass play from McTaggart to Bryan McKim (75 yards on 7 carries) in the third quarter. They outscored the Mules 20-14 in the second half. McTaggart completed 11 of 22 attempts for 251 yards with three of them going to Joey Underwood. “Sean threw well, said Manion. “A couple of those passes were just dropped. I thought the O-line was solid too, especially Jack Eckman, and Kopelman, at safety and receiver had a good night. “The kids were ready to play but when we fell behind, we kind of got away from what we wanted, he added. “We have homecoming this week so we should be able to bounce back.

retaining the Milk Jug Trophy. Instead, they came home empty handed as the Mules used a 27-0 run through the second quarter to propel them to a 48-27 win on senior night. “Their offense is very good and we didn’t execute as well as we wanted to, said head coach John Manion. “They were just the better team. The Pioneers scored the first touchdown of the night, a 3-yard scamper by Sean McTaggart, and the last two touchdowns of the game; a 12-yard run by McTaggart and a70-yard scoring pass from McTaggart to Jake Kopelman (7 solo tackles). In between, however, the Mules piled up seven touchdowns, including six straight that ran a 7-7 tie to a 41-7 Solanco advantage.

DiSomma. “We played some beautiful soccer for 65 of the 80 minutes. It was one of our best games of the season and we had some good chances that just didn’t go our way. With both teams collecting 9 shots, Ephrata scored on a header in the first half. “We came out very passionate in the second half but their keeper made some good saves down the stretch to hold onto the win. FIELD HOCKEY With the post season here, the field hockey team took care of business last week, collecting three wins and pushing their league record to 10-4-0 for third place in Section Two. They opened the week with a harder-than-it-needed-to-be 3-2 overtime victory at Garden Spot on Monday. The Pioneers doubled the Spartans in corners (10-5) and led 15-7 in shots on goal but still needed OT to win. “We struggle every time we play at Garden Spot, said head coach Katrina Swarr. “And we still haven’t solved the corner issue. We either struggle receiving the pass or struggle to get the shot off. Thank goodness for our defensive saves (1 each for Kimmel and Malcolm); they keep us in games. Spot jumped in front with a goal in the ninth minute. Julia Smecker’s goal in the 15th minute knotted the score. That lasted almost 15 minutes as the hosts pushed ahead with a go ahead goal just seconds before the halftime buzzer. Smecker found the back of the cage early in the second half, tying the score at 2-2 and neither team budged after that, sending the game to extra minutes.

field. That defense has been led by senior Elli Strauss and freshman Jenna Daveler. The Pioneers were ranked 12th in districts, before the Ephrata game. On Tuesday, a first half goal by Toby Harnish and a second half tally by Emma Gochnauer propelled the Pioneers to a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown. Strauss dished out one assist and Bella DiCamillo, who recorded eight saves against Ephrata, needed just one against the Bears to earn the win. VOLLEYBALL In their only league match last week, the volleyball team slipped to 6-4 in Section Two with a 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-14) loss to second place Elizabethtown on Tuesday. The Pioneers served up nine aces on the night, three each by Elizabeth Brenneman, Haley Hoover and Sarah Stoltzfus, but it wasn’t enough. Hoover chipped in with 7 kills but it didn’t quite offset E-town’s Rebecca Epps who put down 10. Sofia Campbell added 11 digs, Stoltzfus put up 19 assists and Brenneman added a pair of blocks as L-S sits in third place in the standings. “It’s a coordinated effort of all the churches in the Strasburg community, said ministerium president and Strasburg Mennonite Church pastor John Meck. “We’re all working together, and we want (the event) to be a way for the community to come together. “God has blessed our congregations, and we want to bless the community, added Tom Myers, pastor at High View Church of God and a ministerium member. Strasburg Day will be held rain or shine, and the organizers are hoping for a good turnout. Two years ago, the group hosted a similar event that drew between 350 and 400 people, and the members hope to make it a regular event.

A fundraising reception hosted by Johnny Roberts of a local restaurant chain will follow the performance and will feature a musical group. The event and reception are fundraisers for Diana’s Dreamers: Determined to Defeat Breast Cancer. The endowment is based through the Millersville University Foundation and promotes breast cancer awareness among college-age students. On Oct. 21, 2007, Diana Denenberg Durand died after an 18-year battle against breast cancer. During her battle, the cancer went into remission and reoccurred in other body parts, including Durand’s bones and brain. Durand was a 1967 graduate of Millersville University. The endowment was funded by her brother, Dr. Dennis Denenberg, to honor her and inspire others who face cancer to never give up. Separate ticket prices have been set for the event only and for the event and reception. All donations added to the ticket cost will be matched by Denenberg up to $10,000 total. To purchase tickets and for more information, readers may visit www.artsmu.com or call 717-8717600. First Presbyterian pastor Bob Bronkema noted that, while there may be differences in worship styles and practices, the members of the ministerium are committed to working together. “We want the community to see that churches are unified, he said. “There are a lot of core values in the Body of Christ that we want to celebrate, Meck added.
