The leaders of Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC) have a bit of a dilemma on their hands. The issue: Where in the church building at 1101 Village Road, Lampeter, will the burning of a facsimile of the recently paid-off mortgage take place? Several places have been suggested, including in the lobby near the educational wing, the construction of which was funded by the $335,000 mortgage. Although the location is to be determined, the timing has been set: the Rev. Dr. John G. Smith, Lampeter UMC’s senior pastor, is planning for the well-controlled conflagration to be held during the celebration service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The mortgage was taken out in 2010, when Lampeter UMC completed the second phase of an expansion project that began in the 1990s. The note was scheduled to run for 10 years. “We paid it off early: that’s why we’re excited,” said Tom Brackbill, chair of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. This is not the first time the church has completed a mortgage early. “We call it the miracle of the first building project,” The congregation of Lampeter UMC will celebrate the early pay-off of its mortgage with a serBrackbill related. Members of Colemanville United Methodist Church (UMC), 210 Colemanville Church Road, Conestoga, have been busy preparing for the Family Fall Fun Festival they will host on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m. Individually and in groups, folks have planned a variety of games, contests, and other activities that will be offered at no charge. “It’s free, just like God’s love,” said planning committee member Linda Reburn. “We’re trying to reach out to our community,” added committee member Ellen Peifer. Costumes are welcome but not required. “We want it to be fun, not scary,” Reburn noted. There will be a straw maze, face painting, guessing games, barrel train rides, pumpkin painting, the “A Day in the Life of a Farmer” challenge, Trunk or Treat, photo opportunities, and pie-eating contests. During the farmer challenge, contestants will be timed on how quickly they can complete basic farming tasks like collecting eggs, shelling an ear of corn, watering animals, and stacking straw bales. Competitors will be able to choose between apple and pumpkin for the pie-eating contest. “We encourage family members to compete against each other,” Reburn commented. “It should be fun.” All of the activities will conclude by 5 p.m., when a light dinner will be served and a door prize drawing will be held. Each household that attends will be entered to win a themed basket. Church members have filled containers relating to themes such as ice cream, breakfast, movie night, fishing, spaghetti dinner, Christmas, and pets, and the United Methodist Women group has

While there is no cost associated with participating in the festival, the organizers noted that frozen containers of chicken corn soup will be available for purchase, and orders for mincemeat pies will be accepted. The annual mincemeat pie bake will take place on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15 and 16, when pies and quarts of mincemeat filling will be ready for pickup at the church. Orders may be placed by calling the church at 717-872-7951. The church is planning to make 2,000 pies this year, and both the filling and the dough are made from scratch. “It’s the best pie dough,” Reburn said. “It’s made with lard.” Community members are welcome to assist in the pie-making process, noted committee member Lois Geyer. Interested individuals may call the church for more information. Colemanville UMC will host a movie

night on Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. A familyfriendly film will be shown, and parents are welcome to drop their children off and go Christmas shopping, the committee members suggested. Folks are also invited to visit Colemanville UMC on Sunday mornings. The contemporary service begins at 8 a.m., and the traditional service starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages meet at 9:30 a.m. Child care is available. “We welcome any kind of person,” Reburn remarked. “We have a very outgoing, loving church here, and we’re faith-based,” Geyer said. “We’re a small church with a big heart,” added Karen Unterberger, who is married to the congregation’s pastor, Walt Unterberger. For more information about the Family Fall Fun Festival or the movie night, readers may call the church at the aforementioned number, call Reburn at 717-305-0215, or visit www.colemanvilleumc.org.

The mission of The Cottage is to provide assistance to women in crisis and their dependent children as they search for permanent housing. Before that can happen, however, the organization, which is incorporated under the auspices of Millersville Community Church, must find its own dwelling. “We would accept (the donation of) a house or other buildings that can be converted (into a multi-family dwelling) within the Penn Manor area, said board member Bob Young. “We want to keep families within the district, explained interim executive director and co-founder Diane Duell. “Moving children out of their school is adding more trauma to the situation. Duell and her co-founder, lay pastor Judy Schroeder, envision The Cottage as a place where women who have to leave home in a hurry - such as those escaping domestic violence - can stay to get their bearings and plan what to do next. Duell has met with the directors of women’s shelters and transitional housing programs to receive education and advice. She noted that most of the pre-existing organizations work with women who are already homeless. “We do not see ourselves as competitors but as collaborators, Duell said. “This is potentially the next step for preventing homelessness. Schroeder and Duell connected at the altar at Millersville Community Church after a worship service on Jan. 29, 2017, when director of outreach ministry Bruce Heydt preached a sermon, “Keep Calm and Dream On: God’s Promises Are Stronger Than Our Fears, that referenced “Big, hairy, audacious goals (BHAGs). Duell felt compelled to set a BHAG, and helping vulnerable women seemed like just the thing to do. Through her experiences as a lay pastor, Schroeder had seen a need for emergency housing, so the two decided to team up. After organizing according to the requirements set by the church council, the ministry held its first

board meeting on April 14, 2018. Along the way, the board has also been mentored by SCORE. The date the first family moves in will be dependent upon obtaining a facility and its condition. In preparation for purchasing or accepting the donation of a home and then completing necessary renovations, the board has set a fundraising goal of $100,000 by Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019. So far, it has received a bit more than $10,000. The proceeds from a beef stroganoff meal on Saturday, Nov. 3, will contribute to the fund. Board chair Ed Sykes and his wife, board secretary Judy Sykes, are coordinating the event. “I did this many times years ago, Ed remarked. “I multiplied my aunt’s recipe for large groups. The dinner will be held in the Family Life Center at Millersville Community Church’s Grace Campus, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Seatings will take place at 5:15 and 6:30 p.m. The plated meal will feature beef stroganoff with mushrooms and onions over noodles with sides of peas, coleslaw, and applesauce. Various desserts will be available to conclude the meal. A slideshow presentation will be shown to inform attendees about The Cottage and its progress. Tickets are required for admission, and Monday, Oct. 29, has been set as the deadline to purchase them. On the evening of the event, tickets will be available at the door as supplies last. To purchase tickets, readers may contact a board member, stop by the church office at the Grace Campus, or call the office at 717-872-4571. The board is accepting new members and other folks who would like to volunteer to help get The Cottage running smoothly. Members are needed for committees focused on fundraising, marketing and media relations, policy, property search and management, and finance. The board has an immediate need for an individual with marketing and grant writing experience. For more information about The Cottage or to purchase tickets, volunteer, or be added to the mailing list, readers may email millersvillecottage@gmail.com.

Lampeter UMC from pg 1 multipurpose room, in 1998, the church took out a $420,000 loan. The congregation made one payment, and then it was done. The late Ida Kunkle, who worked as a teacher, bequeathed her estate to the church, and it was enough to pay off the mortgage. Paying off Phase II took longer, but it was still completed earlier than scheduled. The congregation went through several changes, including a split and a merger, but continued to make regular payments. In January 2017, church leaders decided to tackle the outstanding balance by talking to individuals and asking them purposely to contribute toward the mortgage. Within 18 months, the $118,000 principle was paid off. Living Waters Church, which merged with Lampeter UMC, had a building fund of $32,000, and that money was put toward the mortgage. Additionally, the Lampeter United Methodist Women (UMW) contributed more than $50,000, which the group earned from selling Easter candy. UMW president Nancy Dull noted that in 2018, the women made 23,000 Easter eggs. To help keep costs for the two building projects low, Sherm Guyer served as project manager. Guyer had previously been a builder with Wycliffe Bible Translators, and Lampeter UMC was his primary supporting congregation. Noting that there are many tradespeople in the church, Guyer volunteered to manage the construction using as many volunteers as possible. “I kept a daily diary, and in Phase II, we had 2,800 hours of volunteer help,” Guyer reported. “That saved us about $250,000.” The project did have a contractor of record, however. The regional governing body of United Methodist churches required a backup contractor in case something happened to Guyer. Church builder Arthur Funk and Sons Construction Services from Lebanon was tapped to provide site supervision. The company had never performed such a service, but it was amenable. “They were willing to stick their necks out and try it,” Guyer said. “They fit like a glove.” For the past eight years, the finished construction has served many purposes. The classrooms are well used, Guyer said. “And not just on Sundays,” Dull added. The church hosts exercise and sports programs, several Scout troops, Wednesday Bible studies and dinners, community meals, and Bible classes for schoolchildren. The funds saved by no longer having to make mortgage payments will be used to pursue the congregation’s mission to make Christ known. The public is invited to join the congregation in its celebration on Nov. 11. District superintendent Bumkoo Chung has been invited to attend, and a covered dish meal will be served after the service. Sunday school classes for people of all ages will meet at 9:15 a.m. Child care will be available. Folks who plan to attend the meal are asked to register by Wednesday, Nov. 7, by calling Dull at 717-464-4563.

L-S Football Upends Visiting Elizabethtown

The Pioneers’ Joey Duignan gets to the outside on a run in Lampeter-Strasburg’s 20-13 Homecoming victory over E-town last Friday.

The Pioneer football team broke up a three game losing streak with a 20-13 come-from-behind win over Elizabethtown this past Friday night, leaving the homecoming crowd with something to cheer about. The Bears came in riding a three game winning streak and were averaging 380 yards off offense. Their quarterback, Cole Patrick, is the L-L passing leader. But none of that seemed to matter to the Pioneer defense. L-S held Patrick to 168 passing yards and picked the senior signal caller three times. They also held the Bears to a mere one-yard rushing thanks to six sacks.

“We definitely needed a win in our last two games to have a chance at playoffs,” said head coach John Manion. “And, between the whistles, I couldn’t have been more proud of our team, especially the defense. After a couple rough weeks, the defense played, by far, their best game in years.” J.T. Hake and Cam D’Imperio anchored that defense with 10 tackles each. Hake also had four defensed passes while D’Imperio added a sack and three hurries. Joey Underwood chipped in with five tackles for a loss, including 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries. “Logan Bradley stood out in the secondary with his best game of the year,” Manion pointed out. “He

finished with five tackles a two interceptions.” Meanwhile the Elizabethtown defense struggled to stop the Pioneer offense which racked up 232 rushing yards. Sean McTaggart finished with 80 yards and one TD. Alex Knapp added 56 yards and a TD and Underwood finished with 54 yards and a rushing score. Underwood opened the scoring with a 10-yard run in the first quarter. The Bears responded with a solid second quarter, scoring first a 38-yard field goal before picking up a 45-yard TD pass from Patrick to Alex Diahn to go in front 10-7. The Bears were poised to extend the lead and grab some momentum before the break but instead the Pioneer defense made a goal line

But not for long as E-town came back to knot the score with a 28-yard field goal late in the third. The Pioneers scored the go-ahead touchdown with just over four minutes left when McTaggart

finish in Section Two, the field hockey team opened its post-season last Tuesday night in Millersville where they met Section One heavyweight, Penn Manor. The Comets, undefeated in section play, were looking to get back to the championship game and were not about to let L-S stand in their way. The hosts went in front, not quite two minutes in, on a penalty stroke by Emma DeBerdine, and never looked back. DeBerdine and Gabby Bitts both recorded hat tricks as the Comets, with six different scorers, advanced with an 11-0 victory. The Pioneers almost prevented the shutout, scoring what looked to be a goal off a corner late in the first half but “the ball never came out of the circle and was denied,” said head coach Katrina Swarr. “I really thought we could stay in the game with them. “Delaney McCormick (7 saves) and Alexis Garrett (2) both had some really nice saves and did well in goal,” she added. “Right now we need to focus on scoring and stick-to-stick passing,” she added. “Our defense has been pretty solid.” The Pioneers open District Three play Wednesday against New Oxford. The game is slated for 5:30 at Comet Field. “I have very high hopes for us,” Swarr stated. CROSS COUNTRY The harrier teams competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships last Tuesday afternoon at Ephrata Middle School and came home with a pair of medals. Micah Gordley, who was 81st a year ago, and Jansen Miller both finished in 20th place to lead their respective teams. The girls finished 12th out of 19 teams and finished ahead of both Octorara and Elco who were the third and fourth place teams, respectively, in Section Two, ahead of Lampeter’s fifth place effort. Gordley’s 20:34 was the top Pioneer time. Golleen Gilbert, also a junior, placed 29th with a 21:05 with freshman Tori Smith running third for L-S and clocking a 22:20 for 61st place. Rounding out the top five counters was senior Kayla Drouillard (90th, 23:23) and Madi Helms (96th, 23:39) with Hannah Schultheis (97th, 23:40),

Molly Wissler (99th, 23:42) and Gabrielle Burdge (101st, 23:51) close behind. “All but one of the girls ran personal best times,” said head coach Mari Cunningham. “They ran very well overall.” On the boy’s side, Miller, who was 25th a year ago, clocked a 17:10 and will be recognized as a Section Two first team all-star. Joining him will be David Helms and Gordley as second team all-stars. The Pioneers placed 18th as a team, four places behind Manheim Central, whom they shared the Section Two title with. Colton Morris ran second for L-S, placing 96th with a personal best 18:57. Luka Vranich (108th, 19:08) followed and was the 15th freshman to cross the line. Rounding out the top five was Daniel McMichael (116th, 19:18) and senior Thomas Sellers (119th, 19:24). Sophomore Nathan Eberly (121st, 19:28), Zack Kingsley (123rd, 19:35) and David Helms (135th, 19:56) rounded out the lineup. Both squads qualify for the District Three Championships which take place this weekend at Big Spring High School. GOLF Katie Lapinsky was Lampeter’s lone representative in the PIAA Eastern Regional Golf Championships held last Monday at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood. While the sophomore was just eight strokes from qualifying for states, head coach Mike Chioda felt she was ahead of schedule. “Katie shot an 88 and the cut was 81,” Chioda noted. “But she’s a year ahead of schedule. To get to Regionals as a sophomore is a great accomplishment. She was nine over par on four holes but has grown by leaps and bounds this season.” Pennsbury’s Jade Gu, with a 1-under par 72 was the overall winner. The top 13 qualified for states. Lapinsky carded the eighth lowest sophomore score. GIRLS’ SOCCER In their last scheduled game of the season, the girls’ soccer team gained some much needed momentum as they pulled off a 2-1 home victory over Hershey last Monday afternoon. They finish the regular season at 8-6-4 overall.

McKenna Conklin put the hosts in front with a first half goal while M Horst provided not only her first goal of the season but what proved to be the game-winner in the second half. Hershey, despite being outshot 12-6, kept things i nteresting and scored their only goal of the game after intermission. The Pioneers open District Three competition this week as the 11th seed.

Friday’s opening round of the League Playoffs at Lancaster Mennonite pitted L-S against Section One champ Hempfield. The undefeated Knights advanced with an easy sweep, winning 25-8, 25-16, 25-4. Holding a 9-5 lead in the first set, Hempfield pulled away with a 16-3 run. L-S picked it up a notch in the second set, rallying from a ten point deficit, 17-7, to pull within four, 19-15 but it wasn’t enough. The Knights closed out the match with an 11-0 third set run. Hoke led with 3 kills, Brenneman served one ace and put up one block, Sofia Campbill scrambled for 3 digs and Stoltzfus added 7 setter assists. Lilly Hoke was a bright spot with 9 kills. Wednesday the Pioneers hosted Solanco on a night they celebrated seniors Haley Hoover, Sarah Stoltzfus, Alexa Troiano, Betsy Brenneman and Marissa Petersheim. They grabbed some early momentum, winning 25-19 in the first set but struggled in the second, falling short 25-21. L-S regrouped and took care of business, winning 25-16, 25-13. “We started a modified lineup and tried to get as many girls as possible, time on the court,” noted Brenneman. “But that second set loss was due to poor passing, miscommunication and not making smart plays by all the girls. We got refocused in the last two sets and put the match away.” Brenneman’s 12 kills, along with
