“We’re the first school in the region to perform ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.’ We’re very excited for the opportunity,” said David Griffith, assistant director of the show that close to 90 students from Martin Meylin Middle School will present on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Dec. 6, 7, and 8. The doors of the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School Performing Arts Center, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will open at 6:30 p.m., and the shows will start at 7 p.m. Performed with permission from Music Theatre International, the licensed script was adapted by Ray Roderick from the stage adaptation by Jeremy Sams from a novel by Ian Fleming. The junior version is based on the record-breaking West End production and the beloved film, featuring a score by Richard Sherman and

Robert Sherman. “What could be a simple story about a father’s love for his children has wacky spies, a childish baron and baroness, and fantastic locations like candy factories, fairs, castles, and caves,” Griffith remarked. “It is fun because it is so ridiculous … and we need a little bit of ridiculous.” “The baron and the baroness are the comedic element, and (the actors) have embraced the role,” said director Memory D’Agostino. “They’re lots of fun.” Eighth-graders Josh Heisey and Maggie Swarr play the aristocrats. Their characters are over the top, and they aim to push the hijinks to the limit. “ When you feel it’s enough, you probably can go further,” Josh said. “The most challenging part is keeping a straight face because it’s so funny. (Maggie and I) are good friends, so it’s hard not to laugh with her.” See Middle School Musical pg 10

Martin Meylin Middle School thespians will present “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.” on Dec. 6, 7, and 8.

Villages Slate Tree Lighting Ceremonies Black Rock Plans Hymn Sing, Escape Room By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Two Christmas tree lighting ceremonies will be held in the villages of Willow Street and Lampeter. The ceremony in Willow Street will be held at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7. The event will be hosted by the fire company in conjunction with the Lampeter-Strasburg Woman’s Club. Refreshments will be offered, and there will be fun for people of all ages. Lampeter’s ceremony will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., at the West Lampeter Township municipal building, 852 Village Road, Lampeter. Live music will be performed by the L a m peter-Strasburg High School band, a special guest will visit, and See Tree Lightings pg 4

Peanut butter collected at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Lampeter on Dec. 6 will support local families that participate in the Power Packs Project, like Tiffany (pictured), a mother of three. A tree lighting ceremony will also be held in Willow Street on Dec. 7.

Escape rooms have become popular in recent years. In the activity, small groups of people have a set amount of time to find clues and solve puzzles in order to escape a locked room. Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, made its first foray into the phenomenon last year. “We were looking for more winter program activities,” said program assistant Barbra Keeler. “This is another opportunity to get people on campus and use our facilities.” Summer camp program director Ben Herr helped to design last year’s escape room, which attracted approximately 25 groups during its one-month run. Herr spearheaded the latest installation with assistance from program team member Nicklas Frede. Black Rock is a Christian camping and retreat center,

Black Rock Retreat summer camp program director Ben Herr (left) and program team member Nicklas Frede have created a biblically themed escape room, which will be open through April 12. A Christmas hymn sing will be held on Dec. 9. so the duo set the escape room aboard the ship the prophet Jonah sailed on in an attempt to avoid God’s command to go to Ninevah. CROP Walk To Remediate Local, Global Hunger er By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The organizers of the Solanco CROP Walk aim to make the event meaningful for participants. At this year’s event, a five-gallon container of water will be placed in the pavilion at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood, where the walkers will gather on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20. “(Participants) can experience how it feels to be a person who must walk a distance carrying fresh water for their families,” said event co-chair Mary Etta Reinhart. “Helping communities find sources of fresh water is one of the important efforts of Church World Service.” h f h f h d f

Lancaster Marionette Theatre, 126 N. Water St., Lancaster, will present “Cinderella’s Christmas” on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. through Dec. 22. Special holiday performances are set for 11 a.m. on Wednesday to Saturday, Dec. 26 to 29. The show

The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will host the 28th annual greens sale on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, 6 miles south of Quarryville on Route 222. SLCHS members and other volunteers will assemble live greens and other items into a variety of shapes for decorating. Centerpieces, boxwood trees, grave blankets, and wreaths will be offered in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. Some grave blankets will be decorated with patriotic colors for placement on veterans’ final resting places. Shoppers may also purchase bags of leftover greens to create their own decorations. Additionally, some customization of items will be available. Each year, the greens are harvested after Thanksgiving from trees and shrubs growing at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, which is located across the road from the archives building and is owned by the SLCHS, as well as from community members’ properties. “Our neighbors here are really good,” commented SLCHS president Stan White. “With all the wet weather this year, the greens should be in great shape.” The sale committee is careful about what greens are used in the arrangements, opting to use evergreens that do not turn brown too quickly. “If the boxwood trees are watered from time to time, some people have them last until February,” said committee member Linda White. Volunteers are welcome to assist in creating the arrangements in the lower level of the archives building on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Nov. 28, 29, and 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided. The sale committee noted that people who are not SLCHS members regularly help with the sale. “They like the fact that we’re

trying to preserve local heritage,” explained sale committee chair Peg Wurst. Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the sale. The proceeds from the event, as well as the sale of several book titles, 2019 calendars illustrated with pencil drawings of local landscapes, and notecards, will be used to sustain the SLCHS. The sale is the society’s biggest fundraiser, now that the House and History Tour was discontinued two years ago. “As owners of the (Robert Fulton) Birthplace, the society is in charge of addressing major issues and regular upkeep,” Stan said. The SLCHS has been working to get more age groups involved at the birthplace and with the historical society in general, Wurst said. Recently, eighth-graders from Swift and Smith middle schools spent time at the archives engaging with local history through a variety of activities. The Robert Fulton Birthplace is open on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and tours are available for groups in the other months, weather permitting. The archives are open for research from September to May every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and on the second and fourth Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The SLCHS meets at 1:30 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month from January through November. Preorders for arrangements are welcome, and folks may call Wurst at 717-392-5023 or the archives at 717-548-2679 to place orders. Otherwise, greens will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. “We’d like to remind people to come early for the best selection,” advised SLCHS newsletter editor Marsha Stiles. Pictured on front:

On Dec. 1, What the Dickens will perform from 10 a.m. to noon and The Elite Brass will play music from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. On Dec. 8, The Brass Ornaments will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and What the Dickens will play music from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Attendees may bring cameras, as there will be photo opportunities with Santa. Cookies and hot chocolate will be offered to visitors in the museum lobby while supplies last. know their parts sing them, but no music is provided at this point. Kim Enck, a caregiver who is a choir participant with her husband, said that the weekly rehearsals are a blessing to them. “As a spouse of one living with dementia, one can understand that this disease has so changed the dynamics of our relationship, but not the love,” she said. “(Choir rehearsals are) one activity, of only a few as his memory continues to diminish, that we both can enjoy in the moment. To me, (that) is huge.” Shelby Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program, said that participating in the choir can renew family connections and have positive effects on the patients. “One of the greatest benefits of the choir is the joy that it brings both persons with dementia and their family members as they sing together,” she said. “Music touches persons in ways that a lot of other experiences don’t, (so) while they may not recall the event later in the day, the positive emotional

feelings from experiencing music goes with them throughout the day.” Hoover is delighted that the opportunity to take part in “Sing in the Moment” is available to people with memory loss and their care partners. “The (joyful moments) that all of us experience in singing together are moments to cherish,” she noted. Leaman is glad he agreed to conduct the choir. “I am thrilled to be able to do this,” he said. “I am learning as I am going.” Leaman is especially pleased with the effects he sees rehearsals having on the group. “The choir members are all engaged when they’re singing,” he said. Clair Leaman of New Holland has conducted “Messiah” SingAlong concerts for more than 20 years. Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, attends the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs. Hoover thought that if Leaman had the skills and flexibility to conduct the sing-alongs, which are performed without previous rehearsals, he might be an ideal person to conduct a concert that brings together Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing. Hoover approached Leaman following a sing-along, and he agreed to conduct. The result is the “Sing for the Moment” Holiday Concert, which will be held at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. Leaman said that the concert will include seven well-known Christmas carols such as “Joy to the

World,” “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” in addition to one popular show tune. “We will be singing … ‘My Favorite Things,’” noted Leaman, who has enlisted the handbell choir from St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland to participate. “The handbell choir will play three or four pieces,” said Leaman. Choir members come with their caregivers from all around the county. Leaman said that the caregivers also participate in the rehearsals, which are held on Wednesday mornings at Landis Homes. Leaman said that rehearsals begin with light refreshments and a social time prior to practicing the material. All choir members use the words to the songs, which have been printed in a special “Sing for the Moment” choir book created for the group. “Students from Conestoga Christian School decorated the pages,” said Leaman, who added that the book includes 19 musical pieces. According to Leaman, the group includes up to four tenors, a couple of basses, and some altos. Those who

Conestoga Area Historical Society member Linda Funk will demonstrate spinning and discuss fiber arts during the society’s Early American Candlelight Christmas event on Dec. 8. Christmas decorations), said CAHS curator Ken Hoak. “Only the fancy Germans celebrated Christmas. After the Civil War, Christmas became a religious holiday and a secular holiday. Until sometime in the 20th century, only Episcopalians, German Lutherans, German Reformed, and Moravians celebrated Christmas. Thus, Christmas would not have been observed in the log house built for the Quaker Atkinsons. The same would have been true of the Harnish House, which was the home of Mennonites. Hoak noted that both structures were built by Germans. The Atkinson House has the same floor plan as the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, and the Harnish House is one of only six Sweitzer bank houses in existence in Lancaster and Berks counties today.

“It’s pure Germanic architecture. There are no stairs to the upper level, Hoak said, adding that the design would have made moving between floors uncomfortable in bad weather. During the Dec. 8 event, a punch and cookie reception will be held in Gundel Hall, where seasonal music will be performed by pianist Sharon Gantz, vocalists Jack and Kendra Hamlett, and the Manor Singers from Penn Manor High School. At 9 p.m., a drawing will be held for a Pennsylvania black powder long rifle. Opportunities to win will be available until right before the drawing. Additionally, copies of several historical maps will be offered for sale during the event. For more information about the event, readers may call the historical society at 717-872-1699.

L-S Football Holiday Handbell Ringing Event Set Awards Posted After officially wrapping up the season with a second-round District 3 loss to Berks Catholic, the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) Pioneers football team celebrated its 6-6 season with an end-of-the-year banquet. The following award winners were announced. Sophomore Zac Shelley was the Rookie of the Year, and Shaw Thomas and Jake Hines received Most Improved Player Awards. Senior Cam D’Imperio was the Unsung Hero of the season, and junior Jacob Kopelman was Special Teams Player of the Year. The Offensive Lineman of the Year Award went to Jack Eckman, with Tyler Phenegar receiving the Defensive Lineman of the Year Award. Sophomore quarterback Sean McTaggart was the Offensive Player of the Year, and senior Gabe Frederick was the Defensive Player of the Year. Sharing the Hustle Award recognition were Johnny Franklin and Billy Heyser. This year’s Rudy Award went to J.T. Hake, and the Most Valuable Player Award winner was senior Joey Underwood. In the cheerleading department, Jordan Graybill and Paige Kuhns were co-MVPs.

The Jingle Bell Ring, under the auspices of the Stafford Regional Handbell Society and Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, during the Visit With Santa event. The Jingle Bell Ring is a massed ringing event for handbell players held in December. Groups of musicians will perform holiday music for a public audience. Audience admission is free, though attendees are encourage to bring nonperishable food items to be donated to Autumn’s Food Pantry at the Emerald Foundation.

Needed items include healthy breakfast cereals, oatmeal, canned vegetables and fruits, spaghetti and sauce, stovetop meals, canned chicken and tuna, personal care items, canned milk, and canned and dried soups. Any experienced handbell ringer may participate in this event. Ringers must provide their own two bells. Ringers are encouraged to wear festive holiday colors and attire or head gear like a Santa or elf hat. There is a registration fee to participate, and each registrant will receive a songbook at registration. If they wish to keep the songbook, they may purchase the music and their registration fee will be refunded. All of the arrangements are diatonic to the

key of C and require three octaves of natural bells from C4 to C7. Each song is two pages so there are no page turns, and the songs are written to be played entirely off the table. Each musician will be responsible for only two bells. To ensure enough songbooks and ringers to ring each bell position, participants should indicate which two bells they will ring by emailing Jeff Clouser at centralpa handbellfestival@gmail.com by Sunday, Dec. 2. Once participation is confirmed, ringers should arrive at the hotel/convention center by 10 a.m. with their registration fee, two bells and a music stand. Ringers will rehearse the music from 10 to 11 a.m. in a banquet room and then move to the lower lobby to perform two sets.

Conestoga resident Linda Funk became interested in the process of spinning fibers into yarn thanks to family connections. Her husband’s grandfather had pieces of a spinning wheel in his attic, but after the younger man fished it out and assembled it, they discovered that a few pieces were missing. The wheel was relegated to a corner, where it sat for years. Then, while Funk was visiting historic Jamestown, she saw a woman using a spinning wheel and struck up a conversation. The woman referred Funk to Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she connected with Bill Mast, who made the missing parts, got the wheel functioning, and taught Funk the basic spinning techniques. Funk went home and began woolgathering. That is, she went into the fields where she had pastured sheep and collected the pieces that fell off the animals following shearing. Then she spun her first yarn. “It was the most awful stuff, Funk recalled with a rueful laugh. Funk bought prepared fiber and soon learned to spin yarn she liked. Meanwhile, she joined the board of the fledgling Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS). “When (the museum) first

If you want to start collecting, this is the place to come to see what you don’t have because we have it. Funk now owns spinning wheels made in Lancaster County in 1802 and 1808 by S. Humes. When reenacting, she dresses to match in garb worn in the very early 1800s, but during demonstrations at CAHS events, she spins colored fibers so visitors are not confused by the cream-colored drive bands on her wheels. Members of the public may observe Funk and other artisans in action during the Early American Candlelight Christmas event that will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the museum, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. The paths among the buildings on the site will be lighted by lanterns and luminarias. The structures themselves will be decorated in the style of a mid-19th-century Pennsylvania German Christmas. “Technically, before the Civil War, there would have been practically nothing (in the way of

Black Rock Retreat from pg 1 people will be locked in the basement of the crafts cottage and given an hour to find Jonah, exiting through the locked back door if they are successful. The room is wheelchair-accessible. Herr has created escape rooms for his friends, and he follows a specific process to design a successful event. “We come up with fun puzzles, then try to take a bunch of ideas and organize them into a straight line,” he said. “We use visual clues, physical clues, and logic. It’s hands-on, which is a lot of the appeal.” During their time on Jonah’s ship, participants should pick up everything in the room that is not a heavy object - such as several trunks - in search of clues. They may be required to assemble tools to retrieve clues or find puzzle solutions on disparate items. “It’s fairly challenging, but a staffer will provide hints, and we don’t limit them to three like other escape rooms,” Herr remarked. “It’s a great group activity.” “If you’re looking for something for your family to do during the holidays, it’s a fun activity for (people of) a range of ages,” added Keeler. Reservations are required to enter the escape room, and there is a cost per person. Sessions are offered at 6 and 8 p.m. on weekdays and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m. on weekends through Friday, April 12. Other times may be available upon request. Folks may

schedule their visit at www.blackrockretreat.com or by calling Herr at 717-529-3368. While groups are on campus for the escape room, they may also arrange to participate in other activities. During the winter and spring months, Black Rock offers laser tag, glow-inthe-dark dodgeball, and hiking, as well as a nature center and a ropes course. Keeler suggested that groups may opt to enter the escape room before or after the annual Christmas hymn sing, which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, in the lobby of the Maranatha Retreat Center. Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. Bob Meck will lead the singing of Christmas hymns and carols from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., and the Crescendo Community Choir will perform during breaks in the singing. “We moved (the hymn sing) to the afternoon in hopes that more people will be willing or able to come out for it,” Keeler said, explaining that the organizers wanted to accommodate people who do not like to drive after dark. No reservations are needed to attend the hymn sing. A freewill offering will be accepted. Attendees may stay for dinner at 5 p.m. A cost has been set for the meal, and reservations are required by Wednesday, Dec. 5, by calling 800-8589299 or visiting www.black rockretreat.com/hymnsing.

Tickets may be purchased at the middle school office, located next to the high school, or at the door before each performance. As in past years, D’Agostino plans to contribute the show’s proceeds to a charitable cause. This year, she would like to send funds to a school in Florida or North Carolina that was affected by hurricanes and has a theater program. During notes after a recent rehearsal, choreographer Amy Meehan praised Josh and Maggie for bringing their characters to life. “In general, it’s pretty easy to do everything (required of the role),” Maggie said. She noted that the song “Chu-Chi Face” is her favorite, and Josh agreed. “Singing how much (our characters) love each other is so much fun,” Josh commented. In addition to Josh and Maggie, the lead actors include Kole Lawrence as Caractacus Potts, Julian Ford as Jeremy Potts, Katherine Helm as Jemima Potts, Elly Bruner as Truly Scrumptious, and Justin White as Grandpa. St. Anne School recently presented its Third-Grade Historical Wax Museum. Historical figures including Walt Disney, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sacagawea were brought to life by the third-graders as they presented memorized biographies. The students had been working for the previous two months on the project, which is the creation of third-grade teacher Karen Henry. Henry noted that the project allowed students to learn about historical figures, while also practicing public speaking, creating a research report, and using their artistic abilities. “It was a project that touched on many areas of our curriculum, and it made history come to life in a fun and creative way, said Henry. The students were each required to read a book from the Penguin Books “Who Was? series, which tells the stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators, and creators. The students wrote and memorized a paragraph highlighting the important details of their subject’s life.

The St. Anne School’s ThirdGrade Historical Wax Museum included presentations by (front, from left) Zoe Thurmond (Jane Austen), Leah Meloy (Sacagawea), Annabelle McFee (Jane Goodall), (second row) Maria Scott (Eleanor Roosevelt), Annie Verrelli (Rachel Carson), Emma Fox (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton), Ava Richter (Amelia Earhart), Jack Comerford (Derek Jeter), Monica Algeo (Helen Keller), Levi Hockley (Walt Disney), and Lily Corvelle (Milton Hershey). The final step was for students with the help of their parents - to create a costume for their characters to wear in the wax museum. The 39th annual Solanco CROP Hunger Walk took place at Muddy Run Park, Holtwood, on Oct. 20. About 65 people participated, representing 11 community churches and organizations. Funds raised at this event were slightly over $10,000, which was one of the higher amounts raised in recent years. The funds raised will be divided between Church World Service, which will receive 75 percent, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, which will receive 25 percent. Before the walk began, Teresa Dolan from Solanco Neighborhood Ministries shared words of thanks and encouragement. She noted that the funds will support the work of the Solanco Food Bank. In addition, Emily Miller, a Solanco School District elementary teacher, shared insights about how children at the

school where she works appreciated the Solanco Food Bank SWEEP program. Participants enjoyed a pleasant 5-mile walk through Muddy Run in support of the fundraising efforts. Many participated in a scavenger hunt while they walked. Children collected small items,

while adults took photos of the items on their scavenger hunt list. Prizes were awarded to those who successfully found all or most items on their list. Planners of this event look forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Solanco CROP Walk in October 2019.

Tabor Community Services recently achieved national reaccreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA) for the fifth consecutive time. Organizations pursue accreditation to demonstrate the implementation of best practice standards in the field of human services. COA evaluated all aspects of Tabor’s programs, services, management, and administration. Tabor has been accredited since 1998. COA accreditation is an objective, independent validation of an agency’s performance. The process involves a detailed review and analysis of an organization’s administration, management, and service delivery functions as compared to international standards of best practice. The standards driving accreditation are designed to ensure that services are well-coordinated, culturally competent, evidence-based, outcomesoriented, and provided by a skilled and supported workforce. To achieve COA reaccreditation, Tabor first provided written evidence of compliance with the COA standards. After that, a group of specially trained volunteer peer reviewers confirmed adherence to these standards during a series of on-site interviews with trustees, staff, and clients. Based on their findings, COA’s volunteerbased Accreditation Commission voted that Tabor Community Services had successfully met the criteria for reaccreditation. For the past 50 years, Tabor has been helping clients learn how to meet their housing and financial challenges, rebuild their lives, and contribute to the strength of the Lancaster community in the process. Tabor’s comprehensive array of programs and services include rapid re-housing for those experiencing homelessness, rental counseling to prevent homelessness, transitioning sheltered persons to permanent housing, supportive housing, budget counseling, financial literacy education, consumer credit counseling, first-time home-buyer counseling, default mortgage counseling, counseling to achieve financial self-sufficiency, and matched savings accounts to help low-income families save for purchasing assets such as a home or education.
