New Holland Band To Present Holiday Pops Concert By Ann Mead Ash

Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, knows exactly who makes up the market for the band’s Holiday Pops presentation. “The pops is designed for people who want to host their friends, but don’t want to do the dishes after,” said Laudermilch with a chuckle, adding, “We want to foster conversations for families, new friends, and associates around the table enjoying the great food and the beautiful ambiance of the hall.” This year, the New Holland Band will return to Palm Court at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, for the pops program on Friday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will offer hors d’oeuvres and signature desserts to guests who will dine among a number of decorated Christmas trees. The musical

program will include solo performances and a number of seasonal favorites in a variety of musical arrangements. After having directed the pops for six years - the 2018 presentation will be the seventh - Laudermilch has become aware of the types of tunes audience members expect. “People do not like new music,” he observed. “They like old music in a new suit of clothes.” Fortunately for Laudermilch, there are many pieces of seasonal music to fill the pops program. “There are so many wonderful new arrangements of the old favorites, it’s hard to choose,” he mused. To kick off the event, Laudermilch has found a piece by English composer Nigel Hess. “The title is ‘A Christmas Overture,’” noted Laudermilch. “It contains a lot of carols of the season, but (offers) an English composer’s perspective on American carols, and it’s a spectacular opener.” See New Holland Band pg 2

Planting It Forward As the fallen leaves swirled in chilling winds on Nov. 10, a hardy group of volunteers assembled to plant trees at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The time had come to begin the installation of saplings in a grove that had grown tall enough to provide the necessary conditions for shade-loving understory trees. “Over five years ago, Strasburg Lions Club began participating in the annual

tree planting at the park. It was then that the Lions donated the funds and manpower to establish an upland oak and hickory grove,” recalled Joyce Nettke, a local native plant nursery owner who has volunteered for the park for about 20 years and served Strasburg Community Parks Foundation as a board member and annual tree planting chair for many years. Nettke noted that the landscape at the park requires both See Tree Planting pg 6

Volunteers representing the Strasburg Lions Club, the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, and the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, as well as several families, participated in the annual tree planting event at the Strasburg Community Park on Nov. 10.

The New Holland Band will perform its Holiday Pops concert at Palm Court at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Lancaster on Friday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will offer food and seasonal music among decorated Christmas trees. The musical program will feature solo performances and a number of seasonal favorites.

Peach Lane Farmers Market To Celebrate Grand Opening Steve Esh, owner of Peach Lane Farmers Market, a new store located at 85 Peach Lane, Ronks, has been farming produce for 10 years. Most of the produce from Esh’s farm is organic. For two and a half years, Esh has been participating with a farmers market in Harrisburg, and he is now opening his own farmers market right at his farm. Esh is excited to invite the public to the grand opening of Peach Lane Farmers Market on Friday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees of the grand opening may enjoy free refreshments. See Peach Lane pg 7

Peach Lane Farmers Market, a new store in Ronks offering fresh fruits and vegetables, including organic produce, invites the community to its grand opening celebration, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8.

Laudermilch has arranged for soloists to join the band for the performance. West Chester University graduate Sondra Cattich will return to the pops as guest vocalist. “She has the most beautiful alto coloratura voice,” said Laudermilch, who added that Cattich will sing “It’s a Holiday Season” and “Christmas on Broadway,” which is a medley including “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “March of the Toys,” “My Favorite Things,” and more. The other soloist will be saxophonist and fellow West Chester University graduate Chad Smith. According to Laudermilch, Smith, who is originally from Palmyra, has mastered the Rudy Wiedoeft style of saxophone. “Wiedoeft was a sax star of the 1920s and 1930s who played rapid-fire notes,” said Laudermilch. Smith, who has played with major orchestras in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago, has created new arrangements of two Christmas songs - “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Parade

of the Wooden Soldiers” - for the show. “I told him to put some Rudy sounds in there, and he did, so these are two premieres,” said Laudermilch, who added that Cattich and Smith will perform “The Christmas Song” together. “ We will see if he does some Rudy there,” Laudermilch said. Additional seasonal songs will include “Waltz of the Flowers” from “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky and an Irving Berlin Christmas medley, which will include “Count Your Blessings,” “Snow,” and “Happy Holidays.” Laudermilch noted that Santa Claus will make a cameo appearance to a new selection called “When Saint Nick Comes Marching In” from “A New Orleans Holiday Celebration.” Readers who would like to purchase tickets may call 717-355-5096. Laudermilch noted that individuals may purchase individual tickets or tickets for tables for eight, nine, or 10. Those who would like to learn more about the band may visit www.newhollandband.org.

Prima To New Open Facility Prima will open its new facility, located at 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, with a celebratory “Piano Men” concert at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 7 and 14, and Saturdays, Dec. 8 and 15. Prima’s history as a nonprofit theater organization includes hosting Broadway guest artists and presenting a variety of boutique musicals and concerts. Founded by Mitch Nugent, Prima quickly brought together regional and Broadway talent in more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Venue-hopping soon began to challenge Prima’s production teams and inconvenience audiences. Earlier this year, with the leadership of Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, Prima acquired what was formerly the Hamilton Ballroom at Wheatland Place. A $750,000 renovation was undertaken. The new 200-seat venue offers flexible seating and staging arrangements for theater, music, film, and special events. The venue is prepared for hospitality services with a full kitchen. Free, on-site parking is available. “Piano Men” is an original concert that will feature the music of Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ray Charles. Songs will include “ We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Hit the Road, Jack.” The singers, including Diedre Cravey, Joy Lee, Reji Woods, and Jeremy Schonfeld, will be backed by a live band. Woods can be seen in “Orange Is the New Black.” Schonfeld is a rock musical singer and composer. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 717-3275124 or by visiting www. primalancaster.org. Programming plans for 2019 include a series of MainStage musicals, featuring “Disenchanted,” “Godspell,” and “Jekyll and Hyde,” and a concert series called “Altro,” including “70s Smash Hits,” “Sondheim Unplugged,” and “Motown Legends.” In order to utilize the new community resource to its fullest potential, Prima has begun a three-year, $3.2 million effort called FWD. Nearly half of the funds to be raised has been committed thus far for renovations and facility expenses. The remaining funds raised through FWD will go toward expanding artistic programming and supporting artists. More details can be found at www.primaFWD.org.

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request...

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) - the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “PT was excellent! I had major back pain in my lower back and pain shooting down my left leg. Ever since I started coming here the pain is gone. I had trouble bending down to pick things up, I had trouble walking and standing…now I can do all those with no problems.” - Brooke B. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life…I’ve seen it many times. It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… It can ruin your travel plans… And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. The Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists at Neff Physical Therapy have helped 100’s of people from right here in Willow Street…and the rest of Lancaster County…who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a at Neff

A December skating show has been a hallmark of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club since 2006. For 2018, Ursula Wolfer, lead choreographer for the presentation, chose to tackle questions concerning acceptance of self and others in a show titled “Mirror Mirror.” The Red Rose Figure Skating Club show will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature up to 45 skaters ranging from 4year-olds to adults. Solos in the show will be performed by high school seniors and skaters who have reached the elite level in the club. The 2018 soloists will include Manheim Township High School student Katelyn Young, Lancaster Catholic High School student Erin Regan, Hempfield High School students Courtney Meyers and Ellamay Cassidy, Red Land High School student Makayla Robitaille, and Lancaster Mennonite High School student Dulce Shenk-Zeager. For the story of “Mirror Mirror,” Wolfer reflected on the themes of two Disney Channel movies - “Descendants,” which tells the tale of children of storybook villains, and “Zombies,” a musical that pits zombies and humans against each other in a high school setting. According to Wolfer, the story of “Mirror Mirror” begins in a lovely village filled with princes, princesses, and heroes. Audience members will be welcomed to

step into the magic mirror and visit this town where life is good. Wolfer said that musical performances for this portion of the show will be set to the songs “Happy” and “The Best Day of My Life.” However, all is not perfectly well in the town of royalty and heroes. “We rarely stop to think about the struggles these heroes may have,” said Wolfer. “Every princess is searching for her prince, and how does she know that he loves her for who she really is?” Wolfer said one of the princesses in the show will skate to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know?” “We are showing another side of (the princesses),” explained Wolfer. “They are not sure how the public perceives them, and they are a little insecure. They’re going through what a lot of teens go through.” No village of princes and princesses would be complete without a ball, so the town hosts a big party. The fete, however, is interrupted by uninvited guests when zombies and the storybook villlains’ descendants arrive. The arrival of these characters shakes things up in the town, according to Wolfer. Preconceived notions and stereotypes are questioned as the characters consider the implications of living life differently. “The ‘Descendants’ characters question whether they can try being good,” said Wolfer, adding that the princesses and heroes consider whether they should retaliate for the unkindness they have experienced. “We end the act with a lot of questions,” said Wolfer, who noted that the last number will be skated to

The St. Anne students chose to help the Pet Pantry in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast day is Oct. 4. St. Anne School encourages its students to model Jesus every day in their service to others both within the school and beyond its walls. Each month, a different service project is designated to educate the students about people in the community who could benefit from their service. Other service projects have focused on donations of food and cards for the St. Anne School Brown Bag Lunch Program, scarves and gloves for students in the School District of Lancaster, and valentine greetings for veterans.

PennDOT Posts Real ID Details The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) showcased its new Real ID Mobile Verification Unit at the Aviation Council of Pennsylvania’s 38th annual conference. Attendees brought their Real ID documents, and PennDOT staff imaged the documents to the customer’s driving record without the customer having to visit a PennDOT Driver License Center. Once Real IDs are available in March 2019, these customers will be able to apply for a Real ID online, and it will be mailed to them within seven to 10 business days. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, a federally accepted form of identification, such as a Real ID driver’s license or ID card, must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building. Pennsylvania does not require Real ID, and PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs. Federal regulations require that to be issued a Real ID-compliant product, PennDOT must verify the following documents: proof of identity, including an original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. Passport; proof of Social Security number (unlaminated Social Security card); proof of all legal name changes (such as a marriage certificate or court order issued by a county’s family court); and two proofs of current, physical Pennsylvania address, such as a current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address. To obtain a Real ID, customers will pay a one-time fee, plus a renewal fee for a four-year non-commercial driver’s license or a photo ID. After the initial Real ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee, beyond regular renewal fees, to renew a Real ID product. More information about Real ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions and information on documents required for Real ID, may be found at www.penndot.gov/REALID.
