Rock Ford slates Yuletide Tours

The Christmas season as we know it today is an amalgamation of traditions that have been observed by cultures around the globe. Over the course of many centuries, people have adopted customs rooted in ancient pagan societies such as the Roman Empire and rituals that originated during the earliest days of Christianity as it spread from nation to nation. Although the modern-day holiday season typically concludes after Dec. 25, Yuletide is a bygone Christmas tradition that kept the party going well into the new year.

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Yuletide Tours on Friday, Dec. 27; Saturday, Dec. 28; and Sunday, Dec. 29. On Friday, timed entries will take place at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, guests will be admitted at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. The selfguided tours will offer members of the community a glimpse of Yuletide celebrations as they were celebrated by Colonial Americans in the 18th century. Tickets may be purchased in advance for a set price, and discounted rates will be offered to seniors and youths between 6 and 17 years old; children age 5 and under may attend for free. A limited number of spaces are available for each tour. To purchase a ticket, visit https://rock ford.yapsody.com.

During each tour, guests may wander the halls of the former home of Revolutionary War general Edward Hand, a mansion located on Historic Rock Ford’s grounds. Although some Christmas traditions originate from German culture, such as placing a Christmas tree in one’s

home, Hand and other Irish or English Americans observed their own culture’s customs, including Yuletide. The English tradition involved 12 days of revelry that began on Dec. 25.

Christmas Day was reserved for religious rites, but the holiday was followed by a series of parties. The large gatherings typically included big meals, music, games and dancing that culminated in an extravagant ball on Twelfth Night. Yuletide did not highlight gift-giving as much as contemporary

Christmas festivities do, but revelers usually exchanged small items of sentimental value.

“One of our main goals is to introduce people to the Christmas traditions of the late 18th century and early 19th century.”

The many rooms in the mansion will be restored to the way they likely were when Hand still walked its halls. The home will be filled with historically accurate decorations and cooking demonstrations of popular meals from the Colonial era, as well as live music provided by harpsichordists Faith Martin and Margaret Marsch and violinist Mercy Martin. Volunteers and performers will be dressed

in period-accurate attire and stationed in the hallways to answer questions and showcase traditional 18th-century dances. This year, Historic Rock Ford will partner with Town and Country Garden Club to place a mixture of live greenery and faux flora throughout the home.

“One of our main goals is to introduce people to the Christmas traditions of the late 18th century and early 19th century,” said Christina McSherry, executive director of Historic Rock Ford. “Some of them might surprise people, and it’s a good way to celebrate the season and to keep the holidays going.”

Holiday tunes like “Silver Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” as well as religious hymns, including “Mary, How Could You Have Known?” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” will be featured at a Christmas concert to be presented by the LanChester Chorus on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana.

The chorus gets its name from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties, including many singers who attend Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church and other faith communities in the Southern End. The director of the chorus, Kimberly Kusnersyk, is a resident of Strasburg, and the accompanist, Christine Smith, resides in Willow Street.

Light refreshments, including cookies and punch, will be served after the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received.

For the concert, the fire hall’s banquet room will be festively decorated by members of the chorus with poinsettias and greens. Members will dress formally for the occasion. “The men wear dark suits and red ties, and the ladies wear black with red scarves,” noted Kusnersyk. “It’s a mixed choral group - alto, soprano, bass and tenor - and a mixture of ages. They sing very well. Most of them have sung in their church choirs or other choirs. They have a musical

Tree Tenders training planned

Penn State Extension will offer a Tree Tenders training webinar series on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m.

Through the Tree Tenders training program, developed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in partnership with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, people may gain the skills needed to restore and care for their community’s tree canopy. Individuals learn how to plant, prune, and maintain trees. Tree Tenders work to increase environmental health and sustainability, enhance green spaces, and increase tree cover in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania.

Since 1993, PHS has

trained thousands of Tree Tenders in more than 200 neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has supported the program since 2004. In 2008, the program expanded to Pittsburgh and smaller metropolitan areas, and by 2013, it became available statewide. Since then, thousands more have been trained throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.

Each participant will receive a printed copy of the Tree Tenders Handbook, published by PHS.

To register by Friday, Jan. 3, visit https:// extension.psu.edu/ and search for “Tree Tenders Training.”

Promise Players set auditions

The Promise Players will hold auditions on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, from 1 to 9 p.m. for “Muddled Memories,” which will be performed on Thursdays to Sundays, March 20 to 23 and 27 to 30. This musical will offer a lighthearted look at Bible memories with something muddled in the middle, including a monkey, an emu, and a super man.

Singing and speaking roles are available for anyone ages 10 to 100. Auditions will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Those

auditioning will be asked to read from the script and sing the first verse of “Amazing Grace.”

background.”

In addition to the songs already mentioned, music will include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” and “Ding Dong Merrily on High.” “We do a mixture of religious and sacred music - familiar songs and some that are not quite as familiar. It’s always nice to hear something new,” said Kusnersyk. “We will also do a Grinch medley.”

According to a history of the chorus, the group has been meeting in Christiana for the past 74 years. The group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffett and Richard Wright. Wright served as accompanist and business manager for the chorus from 1950 through 2008. In addition to Moffett, the directors over the years have included Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickel and Bill Young.

Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. The group has performed several times at the White House during its Christmas tours and at the Kennedy Center. The chorus performed at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and at the open house at the governor’s mansion.

The chorus has sung the national anthem numerous times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Stormers.

In the summer, the group performed evening concerts at the Convention Hall in Cape May, N.J., and for many years it presented Saturday evening concerts

The chorus also sings at local retirement communities and the Christmas concert every December at the Christiana Fire Company. “We do this annually as our Christmas gift to the community,” said Joan Esworthy, who has been a member of the chorus for more than 20 years.

Next year, the group will celebrate its 75th anniversary, and it is planning special events. “For the 75th anniversary, previous members will come back and sing, and we will do a program based on some of the older music the chorus did years ago,” Kusnersyk explained. “I have programs that date to 1964 of what music they sang. We will go retro and to do a retro program.”

She added that the chorus previously performed in the old fire hall in Christiana, which is now where the borough’s municipal offices are located. “They had fire engines in the room, and they took them out (for the concert),” she recalled. “That room had the best acoustics.”

Kusnersyk was a member of the LanChester Chorus before being named its director about 20 years ago. “I was a choir director for 20 to 25 years, and my mother was before that. It was a natural progression,” she said. “I don’t have a musical degree; I learned by doing.”

The chorus is always in need of additional singers. There are no formal auditions. However, anyone interested in joining the group is asked to email kkusnersyk@yahoo.com for more information.
