The Open Door After School Program will open for its first day on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Created by members of Lampeter Church of the Brethren (COB), 1900 Lampeter Road, Lampeter, the program will serve LampeterStrasburg (L-S) School District students in sixth and seventh grades on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Development team leader Hannah Swarr explained that a few years ago, a college intern surveyed the community to find unserved areas of need. The lack of safe alternatives to staying home

alone for younger middle school students was one of the identified issues. Lampeter COB members, wanting to invest in their community, decided to create the Open Door After School Program to fill the gap. Swarr noted that the development team worked with the L-S social worker and looked at other programs in the area while creating the new program. There are similarities with the School Age Child Care (SACC) program offered to elementary school students at L-S. Parents are charged a cost per hour their students spend at Open Door, and the rate is the Lampeter Church of the Brethren members will launch the Open Door After School Program for See Open Door pg 7 sixth- and seventh-graders on Jan. 7, 2019.

Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a oneyear voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and

participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth. The program covers all of the participants’ living expenses, including housing, transportation, and food. For more information about The Shalom Project, readers may visit http://shalom lancaster.org.

Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative

The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly

schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library

When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how farreaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants. Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given to the rider who wins the Long Distance Award for making the longest trek to participate. Perhaps a less-coveted prize is that of being named Baby New Year. Each year, one lucky - or possibly unlucky - designee rides the entire first chilly mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located

at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set perperson donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees

Students Hold Day Of Giving On Dec. 6, students at Resurrection Catholic School spent the day making gifts for others during the holiday season. Students created cards and ornaments to be delivered to

Meals on Wheels, Historic St. Mary’s Community Meals, and parishioners of St. Mary, St. Joseph, St. Anthony, and San Juan Bautista churches who are confined to their homes.

As they worked on the gifts, students each left one shoe outside their classrooms. During an intermission, it was announced that St. Nicholas had been in the building leaving treats inside the shoes.

Also in the spirit of the season, students chose stars from a Giving Tree and were slated to donate socks, gloves, and hats to Lancaster County’s Families in Transition program.

Family Time Tips Offered For the majority of working professionals, finding quality time to spend with loved ones can be a delicate balancing act. But working parents do not have to wait until retirement to enjoy being in the company of their families. With some fine tuning, anyone can find ways to spend more time with their children, spouse, extended families and friends. Families may consider eating dinner together every night. Dining together

enables everyone to be a part of each other’s day and discuss important issues facing the family. Family members should avoid activities that cut into dinner time. Family members may also consider changing their work hours. For example, some people may be able to leave work at 4 p.m. to make it home for family time and then finish the day’s work remotely afterward. To ensure they have time together,

family members should put it on the calendar. Family time may fall by the wayside unless it is scheduled. Family time should be treated as an important event so it becomes a priority. Families can also enjoy entertainment together. Instead of retiring to separate corners of the house with tablets or mobile phones in tow, members can find a television series everyone can enjoy together. Participants can gather to see how stories unfold

and then discuss the episodes. Family time need not be limited to recreation or leisure. People may get their entire family involved in a chore or project so members can work together toward a common goal. Landscaping, painting a room in the house or even grocery shopping are some examples of chores that can be turned into family time. Family time takes work, but making it a priority can offer important benefits.

Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the

display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlapp volleyball.weebly.com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball” at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

Volleyball Fundraiser from pg 1 Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports needbased scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund.

“Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance

Father Time from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

Music, mascots, crafts, games, and a cascade of balloons are just a few of the fun things planned for New Year’s Eve at Noon at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia. Children and families are invited to ring in 2019 - just a dozen hours early - with Father Time at the fourth annual celebration, set to take place at the museum from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. “This is a fun event geared toward kids and their families,” said Abby Krouse, museum admissions and store manager. “There are lots of activities, and everyone always enjoys the countdown and balloon drop at 12 o’clock, which for our event is noon (instead of midnight).” Joining in the festivities will be local mascots, including Father Time, who will lead a dance party together with disc jockey Stevie. Children will have the opportunity to make and wear hats crafted out of recycled materials, and a photo booth will be set up for modeling those creations. Columbia Public Library director Lisa Greybill will lead a story time. Additional activities will include a New Year’s trivia game, face painting, and family challenges while racing against the clock. Attendees will also be able to create time capsules to remember 2018, jot down resolutions for 2019 to post on a resolution wall, decorate cookies, and more. The main attraction is the countdown to noon, when about 800 balloons will be dropped from the ceiling of the museum lobby following a rowdy countdown led by Father Time. Attendees may also explore the museum and its regular exhibits, which include interactive displays. Advance registration is not necessary. All activities will be included with the cost of general museum admission, which features separate prices for adults, senior citizens, and children ages 5 to 16. Museum admission is free for children age 4 and under. Family rates are also available. Last year’s celebration drew approximately 300 attendees. “Everyone has a great time - they love the music and the games. It’s one big party, and what they love most is that it’s just for kids,” said Krouse. “We do have families come back every year for all of our activities and mostly the balloon drop.” “It’s a great opportunity for families to be together and have fun and celebrate the new year coming in,” Krouse continued. For more information, readers may call the museum at 717684-8261, ext. 211, or visit www.museumoftime.org.

The National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia will host New Year’s at Noon, a daytime celebration for children and families, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 31. A countdown to noon will feature a balloon drop in the museum lobby.

Veterans from pg 1 The prekindertgarten classes at Kids Express Preschool celebrated Veterans Day by inviting family members who had served in the military to be recognized for their service. Four family members were able to share their stories with the classes. One great-grandfather, Richard Gilbert, who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, spoke about his job in quality control. He was responsible for making sure equipment worked properly, including things from trucks to hats and boots. Army Reserve Specialist Brian

Stevens, a great-uncle, shared some photos of the vehicle that he drove. He also told the students about the camels he saw in Afghanistan. A mother and father who served in the U.S. Marines also presented. Angela Goss shared photos of the jets she worked with, and Eric Goss shared about his experiences while serving in Iraq. During an exercise in the ocean, he and his fellow Marines thought they encountered a shark, but the animal turned out to be a dolphin. Students and presenters also shared a snack and sang songs.

Information and handouts for any new interested members will be available. Youths are asked to bring a 2019 calendar to the meeting. This club meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The Rough Riders club also offers the Cloverbud Horse Program to youths who

will be ages 5 through 7 prior to Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019; however, class size is limited. Readers may call Debbie Anspach at 717-786-9324 or Cindy Fairchild at 717-3945161 for more information about the club. Hooves and Hearts 4-H Horse Club will hold a meeting on Jan. 3. Club meetings are held at Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church, 485 Indian Run Road, Millersville, on the first and third Thursdays of every month starting at 7 p.m. Readers may call Amy Walborn at 717-330-6299 for more information about the club.

Neighbors Club Posts Meeting Newcomers and Neighbors will meet in January. During the luncheon meeting, Patti Spencer will be the featured speaker. Spencer, a graduate of Boston University School of Law, has a local practice specializing in trusts, estates, and taxes. She has authored two

Binns Park, 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster, will be the site of an event to ring in 2019 on Monday, Dec. 31, from 10 p.m. to midnight. Local residents are invited. Local band One Too Many will

take the main stage. As the Red Rose City, Lancaster will feature the Red Rose dropping at midnight. The event will also feature fireworks, hot chocolate, and light food.

Nedra remarked. “It gives her another outlet for social interactions that she needs.” Along with educational resources, Bird connects parents and students with social services that can provide things like food, home heating fuel, and weatherization, as needed. Students also have access to health and development screenings and help for challenging behaviors, and parent workshops will be held periodically. Home-Based Head Start is offered by Lancaster County Head Start, which is a program of Community Action Program

of Lancaster County. The program is funded by federal grants. Bird noted that the federal government wants a Head Start to operate in every school district in the country. Because the Strasburg-area Head Start is located in a church, not a school building, enrollment is not limited to children who live in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. Bird currently has openings for five children and will create a waiting list. Parents who would like more information or would like to enroll their children may call Bird at 717-333-1939.

“ We’re excited to welcome everybody and start having fun,” Petersen commented. For more information and to register for Open Door, readers may visit www.lampcob.com and

click on the Ministries tab. Scholarships toward the cost of participation are available, and interested individuals may call the church at 717-464-2050 or email Petersen.

Head Start from pg 1 In addition to weekly home visits, students who enroll in the Strasburg-area Head Start program are also encouraged to attend two socialization days a month, which are held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. Between the individualized and group instruction, students will be assisted in developing fine motor skills, as well as literacy and cognitive skills. They will also learn about health, nutrition, and safety. Nedra noted that while large groups are difficult for Leah, she has done well in the group meetings. “There’s not a big crowd here,”

“Large crowds are too much (for Leah), and there’s less stimulation in a one-on-one at home,” Nedra said. “She’s getting what she needs. It’s awesome that they provide this.” Head Start offers a free, highquality prekindergarten program for 3- and 4-year-old children from income-eligible families. It is parent-based and uses the Parents As Teachers curriculum. “Parents are the child’s first teachers,” Bird explained. “I teach the parent, who teaches the child, and when they go to school, these are the parents who will be involved.”

and then there will be options like crafts, sports, and board games. Bible lessons will be offered, but students will not be required to attend them. Then, the group will transition into pickup time with calm activities. Petersen and Swarr are in charge of the program, and they will be assisted by carefully screened volunteers. Staffers will initially come from Lampeter COB. “Our goal is to bring in some other churches too,” Swarr said. The leaders are also hoping to find people with special skills who would be willing to share them with the students. Petersen suggested knitting and auto mechanics as two of the possible areas of interest. She invites anyone who would like to volunteer to email her at afterschooldirector@lampetercob.com. The Open Door After School Program will run through the end of May. On early dismissal days, the program will be open when school lets out and run until 6 p.m. When school is dismissed early due to inclement weather, the program will most likely be canceled, and parents will be contacted.

same as SACC charges. Additionally, Sara Petersen, who was hired as the after-school ministry director, works at SACC. When Open Door begins to operate, Petersen will spend her mornings with SACC and her afternoons at Lampeter COB. “She has a strong passion for this program,” Swarr said of Petersen. “(She) was such a good fit.” Petersen graduated from L-S in 2010 and received a degree in youth and young adult ministry with Bible from Lancaster Bible College. She worked for three summers at Camp Orchard Hill in Dallas, Pa.; last summer she was in charge of counselors and girl campers. Petersen volunteered at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland to complete her practicum for her degree. “I’ve always had a passion for ministry and kids who need a safe place to feel welcome and loved,” Petersen remarked. Petersen has planned a general schedule of activities for Open Door. Students will be picked up at their schools and transported to Lampeter COB, where they will have snacks and then be free to burn energy or spend time quietly. There will be a homework time,

The Lancaster Airport Authority dedicated and unveiled the sculpture “We Care to Dream” at a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Lancaster Airport. Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the permanently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight. During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator, Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. For nearly 23 years, Miller gave his time and talents to the airport’s growth and success. He served on the Authority board, most notably as chairman, from 1998 until his death in 2016. Along with Miller’s widow, judge Margaret C. Miller, family, friends and business associates attended the ceremony.
