TA passion for language

his past November, Nathan Campbell won World Language Teacher of the Year for Pennsylvania, awarded by the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association (PSMLA). It’s not surprising he won, because he’s loved languages almost his whole life.

“I first developed my interest in languages when I was in second grade,” he recalled. “I loved learning codes and decoding on the back of cereal boxes. Then, I met a schoolmate from Thailand, and she spoke Thai. That was the first time that I met someone who spoke a language other than English. … I was so fascinated by languages that my mother said that I would make languages up. I don’t remember that, but she says I did.”

Nathan has been teaching for 20 years. His classes include Spanish levels 1, 2 and 3; Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture; and AP Spanish Literature and Culture. He also advises the Spanish club, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Amnesty International and the quiz bowl team, and he serves as co-adviser to the Class of 2025. Although he knew very early that he wanted to be a teacher, Nathan wasn’t sure if he wanted to teach Spanish or social studies.

“Witnessing the growth in students from course to course is affirming for me.”

Nathan, who teaches Spanish at Manheim Central High School, said his response to winning the award was stunned surprise.

“My immediate reaction was, ‘Is this real?’” he said. “I was extremely honored to be selected to represent our state as the Teacher of the Year and represent PA at the regional level.” Although he won the honor this past fall, he will be recognized formally in the fall of 2025 at the annual PSMLA conference in Bethlehem.

“Ultimately, I chose Spanish after traveling to Peru before my junior year of high school,” he said. “I just fell in love with it. I hope to impart a global worldview to my students - that they recognize that the world is much bigger than just what is immediately around them. I want them to have an appreciation for things that are different and not just see them as strange. Knowing that so few of my students will actually master the Spanish language, I hope that their perspectives are influenced by their time in my classroom. Beyond that, I of course want my students to learn to communicate with others, hopefully, in Spanish.”

Nathan credits his mother with fostering the calling he has for teaching. “(She) always pushed

Nathan Campbell

my sisters and I to do whatever gave us joy,” he said. “She wanted us to find careers where we would be passionate.”

He also noted that he has had many mentors over the years, including several teachers and professors.

“My student teaching experience was nothing short of amazing,” said Nathan, who graduated from Manheim Central High School and Millersville University. “I was placed with Eileen Sweigart-Rios at Manheim Township Middle

School. … Little did I know that I would be learning from one of the best world language teachers.

Eileen taught me so many skills that I am forever indebted to her.”

He loves teaching at his alma mater, and he enjoys a few unique perks at the school. His wife, Jennifer, is the German teacher, and his 16-year-old son, Lucas, has so far been in every class Nathan teaches.

He also enjoys that as a language teacher, he teaches many of the same students for multiple years.

Art can be a personal expression of the artist’s interests, emotions or experiences, and now members of the Manheim community can take an active part in making art.

People are invited to paint rocks located in a bed beneath a mural on the north wall of 38 S. Main St. The mural, painted by Katherine and Jason Horst, faces the parking lot of Francesco’s Pizza and is located on a building owned by J.D. Young and his son, Steven Young.

As Jason explained, one day J.D. stopped by while the pair was working and started chatting with Katherine.

“He was wondering if he needed to make a change to the bed of rocks that spans the entire length of the mural,” Jason recalled. “And in talking about it, they came up with the idea of having painted rocks.”

Rocks may be picked up directly from the rock bed in front of the mural, taken home, painted and returned.

“Nice, clean rocks are also available for pickup at Horst Arts Center, where a rock pile and project promotion can be found,” Jason said of the center

“Witnessing the growth in students from course to course is affirming for me, and particularly when students take the time to write me about their time abroad and using their Spanish to do what they love, that is what keeps me in education,” he said. “I received a message and some pictures from a student that graduated almost 10 years ago. She is now a nurse and traveled to Guatemala on a service trip. She wanted to thank me for my courses and teaching her Spanish, as she was still able to use that knowledge to communicate with people and assist others on the trip. Those are the moments that I feel like what I am doing makes a difference.”

Nathan loves that what he does has a lasting impact.

“Learning another language helps you look back at your own language. There are expressions that don’t always translate, and you see into how the culture and language influ-

ence one another,” he said. “Language is key to understanding culture.”

When he’s not in the classroom, Nathan enjoys getting outside and running. He is a self-proclaimed foodie, and he likes both trying new restaurants and foods as well as cooking at home. He also travels a lot over the summer, both with his family and with students. Along with Lucas, he has a 13-year-old daughter, Nora, and the family includes two dogs - Lila and Lola - and two cats - Leo and Luna.

As he enters another semester of teaching, Nathan encourages others to consider the field.

“We need people who are passionate about education and understand that the key to opportunity and success is a robust education. Public education, specifically, is a great equalizer and allows everyone equitable access to the information and skills needed to enter the workforce,” he said. “To someone considering entering the profession, they should know that there is support. There are dedicated professionals willing to mentor you, willing to help you, and the community that surrounds you will have your back. Yes, it is no doubt tiring, but the reward of seeing your students succeed is the fruit born of your hard work.”

Cabal’s Lair held a food drive leading up to Thanksgiving and collected more than 1,100 pounds of food for area organizations. The business was able to deliver 833 pounds of food to the Manheim Central Food Pantry and 314 pounds of food to the Agape Family

Shelter in Lebanon. Each location also received a frozen turkey and a case of water through the donation drive.

The food donations had been brought to Cabal’s Lair by customers during the business’s 17-year-anniversary celebration.

LancasterHistory announces leadership transition

By unanimous vote of the board of directors of LancasterHistory, Robin E. Sarratt was chosen to assume the position of president and CEO of LancasterHistory on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, taking over the role from Thomas R. Ryan. Ryan has held the position of president and CEO since Jan. 1, 1997. The transition comes at a pivotal moment for the 138-year-old organization, as LancasterHistory is currently building a new museum in downtown

Lancaster, the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. Ryan will take on emeritus status and focus his efforts exclusively on completing the new Stevens & Smith Center; he plans to officially retire once the

center opens, projected for late 2025.

Sarratt, now in her 18th year at LancasterHistory, joined the organization in August 2007 as director of development and was named vice president three years later. A North

Program to focus on small woodlots

Penn State Extension will offer the Woods in Your Backyard Series from Wednesday, Jan. 15, to Wednesday, March 12. The virtual series is designed especially, but not exclusively, for smaller landscapes. Attendees will learn how landowners can create and enhance natural areas around their homes while positively influencing the environment by implementing simple stewardship practices.

The series will cover topics such as forest ecology and soils, tree plant-

ing and native landscaping, tree identification, enhancing wildlife habitat, water in the woods, invasive species management, and woodlot management techniques.

The workshop manual is a 108-page self-directed book guiding participants through the process of developing and implementing projects to enhance their land’s natural resources.

To register by Wednesday, Jan. 8, visit https:// extension.psu.edu and search for “Woods in Your Backyard Series.”

located at 17 N. Main St.

“Painted rocks can either be returned directly to the rock bed or returned to Horst Arts Center. Ideally, rocks should be fully covered with paint.”

He emphasized that anyone who paints a rock does not need to be a professional artist.

“The rock painting is not about creating amazing works of art, though we love to see folks doing just that,” he said. “The main goal is adding color. While it will be fun for viewers to walk along the rock bed and look at the individual rocks, most of the time the rock garden will be seen from a distance. And so, rocks simply painted a solid color help incredibly! We would love to see people match the colors seen in the mural and create rocks of blues, reds, purples and yellows.”

With the title “Manheim Made By Hand,” the mural highlights the town’s history, including a legacy of glassmaking. It was installed throughout the month of September, with a celebratory launch and ribbon cutting on Oct. 3.

“That is when the concept of turning the rock bed into a painted rock garden was introduced for the first time, with J.D. Young laying down the first ceremonial painted rock that he painted,” Jason said, noting that J.D. and Steven are attorneys at Young & Young of Manheim. “They are loyal Manheim supporters and were very generous in allowing their wall to be used to help beautify Manheim.”

The Horsts hope the rock project will inspire the

community.

“This mural is a celebration of Manheim,” Jason shared. “We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the town. While painting the wall, we had many people ask if they could help. It’s a natural response when you see your town being beautified. But while everyone wasn’t able to add paint to the wall, everyone can paint a rock.”

In fact, he’s also had a request from a local art teacher, asking for a delivery of rocks for students in her classroom to paint. “When the students have created their works of art, I will pick them up and add them to the mural’s rock garden,” he said.

Jason noted that the project is being promoted with the tagline “Make Manheim Rock!” and the mural is a project of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. The mural was designed by Horst Arts Center, which also painted the wall with the help of Friendship Heart Gallery artists. It was funded by Manheim Chamber sponsors and proceeds from the Baron Brew Fest, plus grants from the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the Women’s Club of Manheim.

Jason is looking forward to seeing the rock bed completed.

“The space is going to look even more amazing when every rock is painted - and that is something anyone can participate in completing,” he said. “This is the town’s chance to be a part of the project and to take ownership of this beautification milestone.”

The community is invited to paint rocks for a bed beneath a new mural in Manheim.

Lions Club honors Students of the Month

The Manheim Lions Club recently honored Manheim Central High School students Katelynn Myer and Logan Gebhard as the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) Students of the Month for September and October, respectively. They were recognized at a Lions Club meeting.

Katelynn has always been interested in following in her family’s footsteps by pursuing a career in police work. She is now enrolled

in the Protective Services Academy at the Mount Joy campus of LCCTC, where she is learning about law enforcement and the court system. She has gained real-world experience, and she plans to pursue postsecondary training in forensic science or criminal justice before attending the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. In addition to her training at LCCTC, she is involved in sports, with a particular passion for volleyball, basketball and

Logan is a senior enrolled in the electrical construction program at the LCCTC Brownstown campus. He is interviewing for a cooperative education position through the electrical construction program and hopes to be gainfully employed before graduation. He is considering seeking more trade schooling after he earns his high school diploma. Logan also participates in cross-country and spring track.

Carolina native, Sarratt began her museum career at the Appalachian Cultural Museum in Boone, N.C., and at Doris Duke’s home, Rough Point, in Newport, R.I. A graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of Delaware/Winterthur Program in Early American Culture, she spent seven years at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library as the director of corporate and foundation relations.

Ryan led the Lancaster County Historical Society through nearly three decades of substantial growth and change. Under his leadership, the historical society developed a robust platform for sharing the history of Lancaster County with the public, creating an array of exhibits and educational programs, growing its membership program to include members across the nation, forging relationships with other nonprofits in the region, and substantially

increasing the organization’s financial resources.

In 2009, the Lancaster County Historical Society merged with the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland, reuniting the adjacent properties that once belonged to President Buchanan. Today, the organization operates as LancasterHistory on its 12-acre Campus of History at the corner of Marietta and North President avenues, and it is also home to the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum.

In 2013, through a $13 million capital campaign led by Ryan and Sarratt, LancasterHistory completed the renovation and expansion of its 1955 headquarters, resulting in a 35,000-square-foot museum and research center. The facility achieved L.E.E.D. Silver Certification due to its energy-efficient designs.

A second $3.8 million campaign enabled the organization to incorporate the entire historical collections of the former

Heritage Center Museum and the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum into the Richard C. von Hess Decorative Arts Center at LancasterHistory.

HARTZ PT to award grants

HARTZ Physical Therapy (HARTZ PT) is celebrating its 25th year serving the community in 2025. To commemorate the milestone, the company will award grants to 25 Lancaster County charities throughout 2025. Twenty-four charities will receive $2,500, and one charity will be chosen to receive 100% of the proceeds from the 22nd annual Fall Blast 5K & Kids Color Run held every October, estimated to be $25,000.

Four selected charities will be eligible to receive one of two $2,500 grants each month during 2025. The staff of HARTZ PT, along with the business’s patients and followers on Instagram and Facebook, will play an integral role in the selection of the winners each month. If a charity is not selected during a specific month after the vote, it will return to the selection process for a second chance.

Community members are invited to nominate charities at www.hartzpt .com/community/25th -anniversary/. To be eligible for consideration for the Fall Blast proceeds, nominations must be received by Friday, Jan. 10.

The $25,000 Fall Blast beneficiary will be found among the monthly $2,500 nominees. The Fall Blast director and committee will select three finalists, which will be required to fill out an application providing specific information, such as financial details. The finalists will make a presentation on Friday, Feb. 7, to the staff members of HARTZ PT, who will then choose the winner.
