Join the fight against human trafficking BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Once the home is complete, it’s sold on the open market. The most recent home completed by LCCTC students was a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house that sold in July of 2022 for $415,900. The proceeds from the sale are used to fund future house projects at the school. Martin noted that the program offers students an opportunity to learn a trade while also engaging
Human trafficking is happening right here in our backyard, and North Star Initiative is working to expose the issue and support the victims. The organization will host Welcome to the Battle, an event to spread awareness and information about the topic, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LCBC Manheim campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The evening will feature experts from all sectors of the human trafficking field, who will provide information on the latest tactics traffickers are using, how to identify trafficking and what to do when trafficking is suspected. “We annually host this event, inviting partner organizations to join us to share their programs with attendees and provide a comprehensive picture to our community of the many people who participate in the battle to end trafficking,” explained Melinda Clark, executive director of North Star Initiative. “Along with the displays, we invite experts in the field to a panel where they share their insights around a particular topic. This year we are focusing on answering questions about traffickers’ recruiting tactics and barriers that could prevent someone from exiting the situation in which they’re being exploited.” The panel will feature detective Kevin Quinter, a member of the Anti-Trafficking Task Force and expert on preventing online child exploitation;

earing hardhats and safety goggles, a group of students is hard at work on the grounds of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) in Mount Joy. They’re building a home as part of the school’s House Project, and they’re also honing the skills they need for their future careers.
Since 1989, students have constructed homes through the program. Initially, the construction sites were located throughout Lancaster County, but getting students to the sites was a challenge. In 2005, the school streamlined the process by subdividing sections of the Mount Joy campus into lots for future house projects. Building the homes takes place
over two years and involves students in multiple areas of study, said Rick Martin, construction manager. Students in the carpentry program in Mount Joy are joined by LCCTC students in other fields of construction, including electrical work and plumbing, who come from the Brownstown campus. Instructors Mitchell Hinton and James Smith supervise the students.

Strategies for preventing sports injuries Athletes train hard with their peak when compe- beneficial for the body, but a goal of performing at tition begins. Exercise is at times athletes may be in jeopardy of overdoing it in pursuit of doing their best. Johns Hopkins Medicine says many sports injuries can be prevented with proper precautions. To begin with, athletes should wear the right gear. they become damaged or worn out. Maintaining flexibility and strength is also important. The experts at the Mount Sinai health organization say it is extremely imp or tant to p er for m dynamic stretches before starting a physical activity, as cold muscles are more vulnerable to injury. Also, exercises that strengthen the muscles used for the sport are beneficial, particularly those that target the core. Core-strengthening exercises improve balance and stability, which is
essential in all sports. Athletes should learn the proper techniques for playing a sport or engaging in a physical activity like strength training. Poor form on the field or in the gym can put athletes at risk for injury, says the University of Rochester Medical Center. Listening to one’s body is another key to staying injury-free. Aches and pains in joints or muscles that do not improve in a day or two could be signs that a more serious condition is developing. Do not attempt to
power through pain, which may cause serious issues and significant, long-term injuries. UConn Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine says rest is a critical component of avoiding injury. One to two rest days should be built into the weekly exercise regimen. One option is to make a rest day a recovery day, instead. This choice means engaging in gentle exercise like walking, swimming or yoga. Athletes can reduce their injury risk by following some tried and true techniques.

story isn’t the only benefit associated with this activity. In fact, there are numerous health benefits to cracking a book. For one thing, reading slows cognitive decline. Natural aging results in a decline in memory and brain function over time, but according to research published in the journal Neurology, reading may help slow that process and keep minds sharp. Reading also improves concentration and focus. Technology draws a lot of attention, and those fast processing times and almost instant gratification can shorten attention spans. Reading requires undivided attention and focus, which can improve one’s ability to concentrate. Those who are looking for

newspaper article to a novel. Finishing this task, helps people check off measurable goals, and the mental boost they receive may enhance their mood. Additionally, as long as a person borrows books from a library or a friend, reading is free. It’s possible to educate oneself, travel to far-off lands or even solve mysteries without making a major financial investment. Reading also has the power to enhance literacy and intelligence, as frequent reading introduces the reader to new vocabulary and information. Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher intelligence later in life. Rel ax ation is als o a common benefit of reading. A 2009 study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68%. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. There are many reasons to curl up with a good book, as reading is beneficial to both mind and body.

Fill up on healthy foods Hunger is one of the more common issues individuals encounter when transitioning to a nutritious diet. Many people aspire to eat healthier in an effort to lose weight gained due to overeating. That can make the adjustment more difficult, as individuals are accustomed to eating to a point of fullness. However, there’s good news for people in that situation, as a variety of healthy foods can provide a feeling of fullness and put an end to between-meal hunger pangs. - Water: Water may not be a food, but drinking more of it can provide a feeling of fullness that people are accustomed to. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that symptoms of mild dehydration often present as feelings of hunger. In addition, the PKD Foundation reports that clinical studies have found that 37% of people mistake thirst for hunger because signals that indicate thirst are weak. Dry eyes, feeling sluggish, increased heart rate, and headache are some potential warning signs of thirst. So
when mid-afternoon hunger pangs hit, try drinking some water before reaching for a snack. - Vegetables: One of the misconceptions concerning food and fullness is that low-calorie foods are unlikely to be filling. That is not true, and vegetables are a testament to how filling certain low-calorie foods can be. According to the Mayo Clinic, most vegetables are low in calories but high in volume or weight. That means they can contribute to feelings of fullness without compromising individuals’ efforts to eat healthy. - Baked potatoes: Nearly 30 years ago, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia developed a satiety index in an effort to measure how effective certain foods were at helping people feel full. No food finished with a higher satiety ranking than baked potatoes. That’s good news for individuals looking to transition to a nutritious diet, as baked potatoes without any added butter or other toppings are low in sodium
and do not contain any cholesterol. Baked potatoes also are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Buttering a baked potato can compromise its nutritional value, so consider sprinkling pepper in place of butter if you need some additional flavor. - Pulses: One thing to look for to overcome hunger pangs while trying to eat healthy is slowly digested foods. Pulses - the seeds of legume plants - fit that bill. Carbs that the body does not digest quickly can help individuals avoid hunger pangs, and pulses are slow to digest. Beans, lentils and peas are some examples of pulses. Adding pulses to salads or even using pulses like lentils as the foundation for a salad is a great way to eat healthy and avoid hunger. Hunger pangs can compromise a healthy diet. Thankfully, many healthy foods pack a nutritional punch and provide a feeling of fullness that can reduce the likelihood of potentially har mful between-meal snacking.
Exercise tips for people with high blood pressure Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The National Library of Medicine National Center for Biotechnology Information offers that hypertension is responsible for the majority of cardiovascular mortality. Hypertension is associated with an inactive lifestyle, so becoming more active can prevent or even reverse a hypertension diagnosis. Hypertension is blood pressure in which the systolic (upper) number is 140 or higher or the diastolic (lower) number is 90 or higher. Exercise can help lower high blood pressure and may provide an energy boost and relieve stress.
For people adopting a more active lifestyle after a hypertension diagnosis, it is preferential to start off gradually. WebMD says that in the event of hypertension, any activity that enables one to breathe harder and make the heart beat a little faster can be sufficient; it is not necessary to purchase a gym membership, but doing so may provide the motivation some need to commit to a workout regimen. Activities like swimming, jogging, brisk walking, biking, or doing rigorous yard work also can help lower blood pressure. The American Heart Association says that for most people, 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity is
recommended. This amount of exercise can be broken up any way a person desires, such as 30 minutes per day, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services advises exercising over the course of several days each week. People should make time for stretching and muscle strengthening as well. Regular physical activity can lower blood pressure by anywhere from five to eight mm Hg. By keeping active, a person may prevent blood pressure from creeping up again. Exercise is a vital component of addressing hypertension. After receiving such a diagnosis, individuals can work with their physicians to devise a safe and effective fitness regimen.

seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50% fruit and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed. - Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or
bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in JAMA Network Open in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) a nd s h o we d a g re ate r reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what a person eats but how much he or she eats that affects health. Weighing
and measuring food can hel p a p ers on control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy foods to your diet rather than on trying to avoid detrimental foods. The greater quantity of healthy foods are eaten, the more unhealthy ones will fall by the wayside. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. B alanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven t r a c k re c o rd t h a t a re supported by the medical community may be the best bet.

Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no mag ic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they

Sports are a highly popular activity among young people. The most recent data from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association says 37% of children between the ages of 6 and 12 played team sports on a regular basis in 2021. At the highest point in 2008, 45% were involved in sports. According to various youth sports participation surveys, including those from the Aspen Institute and TeamSnap, children between the ages of 6 and 18 spend an average of 16.6 hours each week playing sports. With so much time devoted to athletics, everyone involved can take steps to ensure that children and youths are safe and healthy during practice and play. - Encourage rest. Pushing the body to the brink without routine rest is a recipe for injury. Rest provides recovery time for muscles
and joints as well as the mind. Athletes can aim for at least one day off from the sport per week. After the season ends, children may take an ex tended break before beginning a new sport. - Eat balanced meals. Families can plan balanced meals that will provide the nutrition young athletes need to fuel their bodies. With increased physical activity comes a need to eat more. The International Olympic Committee says nutrients such as vitamin D, calcium and iron are essential but often lacking in youths with restrictive diets. A young athlete should eat plenty of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, protein, and vegetables. - Encourage variety. MedlinePlus reports that many young athletes are engaging in single-sport specialization early on, focusing only
on one sport, even during offseasons. Repetitive use of joints, bones and muscles for these sports can cause various injuries. To prevent these injuries, young athletes should participate in a variety of sports and training exercises. - Wear the right gear. Athletes always should wear the safety gear required for the sport they are playing. This equipment may include eye protection and helmets. - Discourage young athletes from playing through pain. Pressing on through pain or an injury is a recipe for damage that could keep a player out for the season or even permanently. - Alleviate mental pressure on athletes. Many y o u n g a t h l e t e s t h ro w themselves entirely into spor ts, perhaps at the expense of having more well-rounded childhoods. The National Federation
of State High School Associations says only around 2% of high school athletes are awarded some form of athletic scholarship to compete in college, and fewer than 2% of NCAA student-athletes go on to play professionally. Putting all of one’s eggs in the sports basket can contribute to anxiety that stems from the pressure to succeed. Keep the emphasis on fun so young athletes don’t feel pressured. - Avoid performance-enhancing substances. Caffeine, anabolic steroids, steroid precursors, creatine, and stimulants are substances athletes use to boost performance. These substances can cause many health issues and even lead to addiction. Young athletes can take many steps to stay healthy without affecting how much they enjoy the thrill of competition.

Fallen Officers’ Benefit Hockey Game set The Cops for K .O.P.S. annual Fallen Officers’ Benefit Hockey Game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at Giant Center, 550 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. The opening ceremonies will begin at 12:45 p.m., with the puck drop at 1 p.m. Since 2005, COPS for K.O.P.S. (Keep Our Pipers Silent) has been committed to supporting the families of Pennsylvania law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty, particularly the educational needs of their children. The annual benefit hockey game raises funds for COPS for K.O.P.S.’ mission and memorializes fallen officers. At the upcoming game, teams of active duty and
retired law enforcement officers from organizations such as the Pennsylvania State Police, Philadelphia Police Department, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and local municipal police departments will face off. The event will also include giveaway drawings and games. The family-friendly hockey game is COPS for K.O.P.S.’ largest fundraiser, with this year’s fundraising goal set at $50,000. In previous years, more than 1,000 family members and friends, along with media personnel, have attended. Following the game, an after party will be held at the Hershey Italian Lodge, 128 Hillcrest Road, Hershey. Community members are invited to join family members of the memorialized
officers and people who played in the hockey game for a full meal, beer and wine, beverages, DJ entertainment, giveaway drawings and a silent auction. Tickets for the hockey game may be purchased at the door. There is a separate fee and ticket for the after party. Seeing what you create at the end is the best part.” As a freshman at Pequea Valley High School, Katrina Kilby built a shed in a carpentry class and discovered a love for the work. Now a senior at LCCTC, she has had a hands-on part in much of the House Project. “I love seeing this go from nothing to a whole building
or a whole house,” she said. “And I really like that it’s hands-on.” For senior Chase Travitz of Manheim, the House Project is providing realworld carpentry experience that he plans to take with him after graduation. He already has a job lined up with eciConstruction. “I’ve always wanted to do something hands-on with my life, and carpentry is something I love,” he said. “I love getting to work with my hands every day. It’s problem solving and learning something new every day.”
