Providing A Second Chance BY CATHY MOLITORIS
With 30 years in the profession and as chief of the Elizabethtown Police Department, Ed Cunningham has seen countless encounters between the police and people who are addicted to drugs. Most of these encounters ended the same way: with an arrest so the person could detox in jail, or with a dose of naloxone to rescue someone who was overdosing. He knew there had to be a better solution, and he found it by creating the
SecondChancePA program. “This grew out of an attempt to find a new way to deal with the overdose epidemic and particularly the opioid epidemic,” he stated. “Everything we’ve always tried was not working. … Arrest or the medics were our only tools. If the person didn’t want to go with the medics, or if there wasn’t a reason to arrest them, we could do our best to talk them into treatment, but if they didn’t want to go, there was nothing we could do.” See Chance pg 2
Lori Shenk with donations for the Child Life program
Sharing Joy With Toys orthwest EMS has a mission to support the community. To help fulfill that mission, the station signed on to participate with Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to hospitalized children. “Our office manager’s granddaughter, Taylor, was a patient in the hospital over Christmastime in 2020,” recalled Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS. “She spent about a total of two weeks in the hospital, and she had never heard of Child Life before. She said it made all the difference to her and her experience was so much better because of Child Life.” She came home and asked her grandmother if the station wanted to collect toys for the program. Shenk said the station began collecting in the spring of 2021 and so far, she’s made multiple deliveries to both Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital. “We collect toys year-round at all four of our EMS stations,” Shenk said, referring to the locations in
ed. “We see the need, and if we can do something as simple as be a dropoff location, we want to do that.” Along with Child Life collection, the station is collecting food for the three food banks in the geographic locations the station serves. “We’re collecting for the Manheim Central Food Pantry, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank and the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard,” Shenk stated. While Child Life collections are accepted at all of the station’s locations, food is collected only at the Elizabethtown station and the Manheim station. Personal hygiene items will also be accepted, and no food items may be outdated. Collection will run throughout the month of February, with food delivered prior to Friday, March 4. A shoe drive is also underway at the Manheim station to benefit Hope Served, a Manheim-based nonprofit that supports people with disabilities. For more information on the Child Life program or other donations at the station, contact Shenk at 717-371-8282.

Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West.

When people drop them off, they should either label the toy for Child Life or let the person they give it to know it’s for Child Life.” Shenk collects the toys and makes a donation when she has enough to split between the two locations. Her aim is to deliver two to three times a year. Toys are accepted for boys and girls of all ages, from newborn through age 18. “If a child is undergoing a procedure or having surgery, he or she can come back to a new toy, and it’s just a little bit of joy for them,” Shenk said. “It gives them something fun to do in the hospital and lets them know someone is thinking of them.” Participating in the Child Life program is part of the station’s goal to connect with the community, Shenk said. “We try to do community outreach because we have a unique window into the community,” she stat-

The first Pretzel Fest in Lititz took place in 2012, and the event became an annual favorite for both locals and visitors. However, for two years, there has been no Pretzel Fest. “In 2020, we were ready to go, but we canceled due to COVID-19,” said Karen Davis, Pretzel Fest publicity representative. The event, which is organized by the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area, was canceled in 2021 for the same reason. But for 2022, the delicious event is back with more than 20 Lititz-area locations ready to host tastings on Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kiwanis Club members will use funds raised by the Pretzel Fest to hold Kids Fun

Kids Fun Day, which was first held in 2019, will include games, prizes, books, and food. “(Food creations for Pretzel Fest) must have pretzels as an ingredient or they have to be complemented by pretzels,” explained Davis, who described one cheese-flavored treat called quattro fromaggi as a lollipop encrusted in pretzel with a pretzel stick. “I can’t wait to see what that looks like,” said Davis. Adult beverages will be added to the fest this year as well. Attendees will have opportunities to taste one wine, three beers, a mead, and two spirits,” said Davis, who noted that alternative See Pretzel Fest pg 8

Add Your Voice To The Chiques Choir If you love to sing, you’re invited to participate in the first Chiques Choir Festival, to be held on Sunday, May 1, at 4 p.m. The event’s location is still being finalized, but rehearsals for the choir will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., in the sanctuary of Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC), 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 23. The event is being organized by Tom Berdos, director of music for Chiques UMC, who has coordinated a community concert featuring Handel’s “Messiah” for many years. Although this will be the first time the choir festival will be held locally, Berdos has conducted the festival at other locations out of state. While the “Messiah” concert featured a difficult piece of music, the choir festival is more accessible to everyone, Berdos noted. “The music is generally lighter and more varied than ‘Messiah,’ and it’s easier to learn and sing,” he stated. “While ‘Messiah’ is very classical, heavy-duty stuff that
takes a lot of work to master, this is not that. This will feature a wide variety of music.” The pieces will still be sacred music, he noted, but will include choral anthems ranging in style from classical to modern, including hymns, spirituals and other choral arrangements. “When I did this concert before, we had people up dancing in the aisles,” Berdos commented. He invites anyone with an interest in singing to join the festival. “There are lots of churches these days that do not offer a choir,” he stated. “I’m a big believer in following the Lord’s commandment to sing together. I’m hoping people who love to sing but don’t have the opportunity to sing in a church choir will jump in. I am looking for anyone who wants to sing sacred music.” The concert will be free to attend, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit local emergency responders. In previous festivals, Berdos said, some of the responders participated in the concert and people whose lives were saved had a chance to speak at the festival. “My goal for this is to make this

festival a community event,” he stated. “We want to give back to the people who are giving so much to us. It’s about supporting the people in our community who support us.” He noted that he’ll be keeping a close eye on COVID restrictions as the festival approaches to determine if the event can be held at the church or will be moved to a larger venue to allow for more social distancing. In the meantime, he encourages anyone who feels called to participate to contact him and join rehearsals.
“You do not need to have a church affiliation to participate,” he said. “This is for everyone. I’m inviting anyone who wants to have the opportunity to sing sacred music for the glory of God.” For more information and to sign up to participate, email Berdos at ccmusic.tom@gmail.com.

PA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped mint-
ing these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and Pennsylvania residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.
Q GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.
Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per PA resident has been imposed SILVER: one of the last silver coins minted for circulation

FACTS:

RARELY SEEN: minted by the u.s. mint in the early 1900’s
HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB4103
Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:
Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:
It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:
Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.
How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:
Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB4103 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

PENNSYLVANIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National TollFree Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Barons Top Cocalico; Grube Joins 1,000 pts Club battled when they needed to, Central coach Charlie Fisher said. “We moved the ball well and didn’t settle for anything,” Fisher said about the key to his team’s early success. “We were getting good shots. Your shooting percentage is based on taking great shots and just getting inside and getting to the rim.” Fisher said his starting five all scored during the first quarter run. Trey Grube led the charge with 17 points and Judd Novak added 16. Against Solanco on Feb. 5 the Barons were raining threes, knock-

BOWLING Manheim had two straight 7-0 victories last week, beating Elco and Garden Spot. Jesse Hurst had the top score of 516 against Elco at Berks Lanes. Landen Statts had a match-best 658 at Dutch Lanes against Garden Spot. “They key to Elco was to make sure that they hit averages,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “Elco has a young team and is having no trouble keeping their team together. But our team didn’t take them lightly and played their game.” Against Elco, Aaron Vogel had a 490 and Ethan Howard a 494. “Against Garden Spot our bowlers all had a great night overall,” Sides said. “Landon rolled a high 600 series and Statts rolled a 500-plus.” Holly Hunt had a three-game 517 against the Spartans. Howard a 555 and Hurst had a 581. Despite a remarkable 11-1 record, Barons might have to settle for second place because of the complicated rationale used to determine overall final point totals. WRESTLING Several Mannheim grapplers earned hardware on Feb. 5 in the Elizabethtown Optimist Tournament for junior high wrestlers. Noah Templin, an eighth grader, was crowned the 190-pound champion and finished with a 20-4 record in his first year of wrestling. Other Manheim medal winners included Cody Hess (3rd), Landen Sauder (4th), Jason Dougherty (5th) and Logan Hess (5th).

On average, 10 to 12 scholarships are awarded each year. To be eligible, an applicant must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area - which includes Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill, and York counties - or be applying to or attending a chapter service-area trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Relevant fields of study include skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management. Fire And Ice
BY ANN MEAD ASH
In 2021, to keep visitors and residents safe, Lititz canceled its Fire & Ice Festival and instead held the Lititz Ice Walk, which extended the event from a single weekend to several days and focused especially on the ice sculptures lining the streets. For 2022, the town will host what executive director of Venture Lititz Rebecca Branle calls a hybrid event. “A lot of people enjoyed taking their time (to view the ice sculptures) and coming back a few times (in 2021),” she said. This year, the Fire & Ice Festival
will officially run from Friday, Feb. 18, to Monday, Feb. 28, and encompass a number of activities, including a ticketed preview party, a Kids Funderland, a sweet treats punch card, and a scavenger hunt. The launch party, called Winter’s Coolest Night Out, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. at Collusion Tap Works, 5 Juniper Lane, Lititz. It will include a live ice carving outside The Lititz Shirt Factory building where the Tap Works is located. “It will be a really fun, interactive carving brought to us by Luthercare, the sponsor of the event,” said Branle, who noted that the
sculpture will remain after the party. The party will also feature Lancaster-based fusion band the Inca Campers. “Every demographic will have fun with that (music),” noted Branle, who added that the ticket price will include a drink and light appetizers. More than 60 ice sculptures will be on display throughout the event. Among this year’s creations will be a unicorn and a kangaroo. The Nittany Lion will make a return appearance. “There will be something really beautiful in front of Lititz Mutual (on North Broad Street),” noted Branle. A special two-sided punch card will be distributed to local hotels through Discover Lancaster. One side will encourage visitors to attend area establishments to experience a special fire-and-ice-themed beverage. “We encourage (attendees) to take photos and tell us which was your favorite,” said Branle, who added that because organizers want families to enjoy the fun too, the flipside of the card will offer other specials throughout
town, which might be an iced coffee, an arctic tea, or a spicy chocolate treat. A photography exhibition designed to highlight iconic Lititz images will be held on the third floor at The Lititz Shirt Factory. The exhibit is open during Collusion Tap Works hours and is free to the public. A special day has been planned for children on Presidents Day. “Monday (Feb. 21) will be the Winter Funderland, which will be kid-focused,” said Branle. She noted the event will close West Main Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The Lancaster Science Factory’s interactive van will come and do fire and ice science fun,” said Branle, who added that the Lititz Fire Company will open part of its building to children in the case of extreme cold. On Thursday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m., a Farmer’s & Maker’s Market representing the talents of Lititz-area residents will be held at Brownstone Manor, 2 W. Orange St., Lititz.
The Lititz Fire & Ice Festival will be held for 11 days in February.
Food truck courts will be set up on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Feb. 19, 20, and 21, and on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27.

going on at the youth center. We want people to get connected to our ministry and get excited about all the things that are happening at REYS.” Dinner will include Parmesan chicken, hamloaf, raspberry vinaigrette salad, potatoes, corn and green beans, plus pies and cakes. The keynote speaker for the event will be Kari Tavella. The wife of “America’s Got Talent” winner Dustin Tavella, Kari had a successful career in the entertainment industry as a model and actress before drugs and alcohol took over. In a time of desperate need, she turned to Jesus. “She has a really cool story of coming from a bad situation, hitting rock bottom and how God completely transformed her life,” Paden stated. “We felt like that really resonates with what some of our students who come to REYS are experiencing. We want REYS to be a place where they can flourish, where they can hear about the transformative power of Jesus.” Tickets to the banquet are free. Funds are raised for REYS through sponsorships and donations. “We are still looking for sponsors, and we will collect a freewill offering at the event,” Paden remarked. “Money raised will help support the operating expenses of the youth center, our afterschool programs, our music

programs and martial arts programs. It takes money to offer all of these things for free to our families.” REYS offers programs for students in grades one through 12, serving Mount Joy and the surrounding areas. The banquet will also feature a video presentation, sharing the stories of some of the people who have been impacted by REYS throughout the years. “The banquet is a really cool way to see up close what REYS is all about,” Paden stated, noting that she hopes to have some of the current students at the banquet. “Come see what REYS is doing and how we’re reaching local youth in Christian love.” Reservations are required for the banquet, and the reservation deadline is Monday, March 7. Ephrata National Bank (ENB) is accepting submissions for its “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest, which is organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation. This national competition encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of sound money management and to set their peers on a sound financial path. “Lights, Camera, Save!” gives local students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers. ENB believes that a strong financial education is critical to a successful future and the contest reinforces that message. To participate, students ages 13 to 18 must create a video lasting 30 seconds or less and focused on using money wisely. Students must provide the bank with a link to their video and
a completed entry form by Thursday, March 31. The contest is open to filmmakers of all experience levels. ENB will host the first round of judging and select a winner to compete on the national level for one of three cash prizes. Additionally, the first-place winner will receive a local grand prize from ENB. National contestants will face off head-to-head in the first round of national judging on the American Bankers Association’s Instagram page at www.instagram.com/americanbankersassociation, which will determine which videos advance to the second round of national judging. Videos will be judged on their quality, message and content and the criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules. To learn more about the “Lights, Camera, Save!” contest, visit www.lightscamerasave.com or www.epnb.com/lightscamerasave.

In October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we researched about 30 community pools,” said Paskoff. “Our team was amazing. We had to find a place.” When a relative of a board member suggested the New Holland Community Pool and Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, Aaron’s Acres staff members reached out to set up a meeting before Thanksgiving 2021. “(New Holland representatives) were more than accommodating,” said Paskoff. “We needed an indoor facility if the weather was bad. We needed accessible bathrooms. They had everything.” Paskoff noted she specifically worked with pool manager Leo Ward, office manager Paula Walsh, and borough manager Dick Fulcher. “The pool will be open for us
a home of its own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30-yearolds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the animals, and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.
