Helping survivors of human trafficking

North Star Initiative invites you to join the fight against human trafficking. Welcome to the Battle will be held on Friday, April 14, at Grace Community Church, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run until 8:30 p.m.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. “Welcome to the Battle is an awareness and education event for our community,” explained North Star executive director Melinda Clark. “It’s for anybody who wants to know more about what human trafficking is, how it’s affecting our community, and how we are working to end it.”

The annual event will feature a panel of speakers as well as information booths from community organizations. Michelle Gehman, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn, will represent the hospitality industry, discussing ways to raise awareness of potential trafficking taking place in hotels and provide assistance to people who are being trafficked. North Star program director Paula Montijo will discuss the organization’s efforts to provide restoration and support to survivors of trafficking. Brad Ortenzi and Andrea McHenry of ZOE International will talk about what survivors need in order to experience whole restoration. Andrea Meredith from She’s Somebody’s Daughter will speak about resources available to women who have experienced sexual exploitation.

Clark noted that other agencies will be on hand at the event to distribute information and provide resources to the community. “Our goal is to collaborate with community partners to network, maximize our resources, expand awareness of trafficking, abolish trafficking and work together to provide resources for survivors to experience restoration and live lives of their own choice,” she stated. “People in the community want to get involved to help, and this event is an opportunity to help people understand what has been done already and what work we still need to do.”

Founded in 2010, North Star works with women who have

been trafficked to provide physical, psychological and spiritual care. The organization recently opened The Survivor Center, where classroom and program space is located as well as a gym and other resources for residents of North Star’s restoration home.

Clark encourages anyone with an interest in the topic to attend Welcome to the Battle. “This is a cause that should matter to our entire community,” she said. “We tend to think of slavery in terms of something that happed 150 years ago, something we’ve abolished, but we don’t realize that modern-day slavery still exists in the form of human trafficking. We need to know this so we can be honest about what is happening in our community and our commonwealth.”

She hopes the event will also inspire people to join the fight. “Come learn about this and see how you can get involved and you can make a difference,” she remarked. “There are so many opportunities to help. We want to welcome anyone to the battle who wants to come. There is a space for everyone in the community to get involved.”

During the morning sessions, presenters will address topics such as the usage of e-cigarettes among students, the difference between decodable and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technology in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.

When IU13 first began to host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said

Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.

This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.”

Volleyball team sweep Elizabethtown, 3-0

VAs far as season opening victories go, the Baron boys volleyball team’s 3-0 win over Elizabethtown on March 28th was run of the mill. But as the old saying goes, it is not how you start, it is how you finish. The Barons are not as concerned with season openers as trying to snap their four-year stretch of PIAA-2A quarterfinal losses on the back end of the schedule. When looked at through that lens, the 25-17, 25-15 and 25-12 win was a place to start.

Dylan Musser did a bit of everything, filling the stat sheet with 20 assists, two digs, two blocks and one kill. Miller added three digs to his eight kills while Landon Mattiace went with two blocks and a team high nine kills. Both Jacob Moyer and Colin Rohrer finished with six digs, but Moyer added four kills to his game tally.

SOFTBALL

The Central softball team kicked off their 2023 season under ‘if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best’ mode by facing the reigning District 3-5A champion, Exeter Township. The March 23rd showdown went to the Lady Eagles by a 5-0 final leaving Manheim with a 0-1 start.

Riley Hostetter covered all seven innings, allowing nine hits and those five runs with one strikeout and one walk, while taking the loss.

Michaela Lauver and Paige Garner combined for four of Central’s six hits with two apiece.

BASEBALL

The Baron baseball team kicked off their 2023 season with two false starts thanks to Mother Nature’s Spring hobby, making it rain on the high school sports world. Central was scheduled to start their season on March 25th with a trip to Muhlenberg but rain pushed the game back to the 27th. More rain pushed the game back another day with Manheim staving off a late Muhl’s rally to escape with a 5-4 win on the 28th.

The Barons did their heavy lifting in the top of the fifth where a four-run burst pushed their lead to 5-0.

Muhlenberg began chipping away at that lead starting with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Central was pushed to the edge in the bottom of the seventh with three more Muhl runs making it a one run game.

Cayde Connelly was able to stop the rally after taking over for Trevor Lowe. Jared Murry got the start and the win with Cole Lawhorne and Cael Mar-

tin bridging the gap to Lowe. The quintet combined for nine strikeouts. Brady Harbach finished with two RBI despite just one hit while Nolan Book and Connelly combined for two hits and two RBI.

Manheim Central found themselves on the opposite side of things on March 29th, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 2-1 final. This time the Barons were unable to hold off the late inning rally watching L-S score both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Central’s lone run came in the second with Murray’s RBI single. Connelly pitched long enough into the seventh that both the Pioneer runs went on his record, taking the loss in the process. Martin took over for Connelly and nearly got out of the jam, but Lampeter-Strasburg was able to plate the winning run.

TENNIS

The boys’ tennis team has been busy, completing half their season putting the Barons at 3-5 over their initial eight games. Central’s wins have come over ELCO, Lancaster Mennonite and Garden Spot with losses to Donegal, Wilson, Cedar Crest and Elizabethtown.

OSJL celebrates Elizabethtown store’s grand opening

Ocean State Job Lot

(OSJL), a discount retail chain with stores across the Northeast, recently announced the opening of its 151st store in Elizabethtown in the former Kmart space in Market Street Square, located at 1605 S. Market St. The Elizabethtown store is OSJL’s eighth location in Pennsylvania and the second in Lancaster County.

OSJL opened another new store in March in Shillington in a former Kmart space at 4000 Shillington Plaza.

OSJL’s Elizabethtown store occupies roughly 55,000 square feet of the nearly 95,000-square-foot space, which has been vacant since 2019, offering customers a new shopping experience, restoring vibrancy to the previously vacant retail location and creating new jobs in the community.

OSJL hosted a grand opening celebration and ribboncutting ceremony on March 11 at its new Elizabethtown store, with representatives from the brand, local dignitaries and officials and other VIPs in attendance, including Denise Grove, executive director, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce; Marc Hershey, council president; Phil Clark, council vice president; council members Lanty Moss and Jay Hynicker; state Rep. Tom Jones; Dave Middleton, Elizabethtown store team leader; Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert; Paul Cox, OSJL director of store operations; and Vincent Ricci, OSJL store team leader.

Visitors enjoyed food trucks, free activities and giveaways.

Shoppers throughout New England, New York, New Jer-

sey and Pennsylvania may know OSJL for its Crazy Deals, Insider Club, and wide range of merchandise, including household goods; apparel; pet supplies; seasonal products such as lawn and garden essentials; patio, pool and beach supplies; heating and

Milagro House sells property

cooling appliances; kitchen pantry staples; and gourmet and international specialty foods.

Store hours are currently 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. For more information, call 717-423-4973 or visit www.oceanstatejoblot.com.

Milagro House completed the sale of property it owned at 132-134 S. Prince St., Lancaster, to the Lancaster Redevelopment Fund Inc., a nonprofit supported by the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority. The buildings were purchased by Milagro House in 2018 with the intent of moving and expanding its nonprofit operations and programming to that location.

In 2022, however, Milagro House was presented with the opportunity to partner with HDC MidAtlantic to develop a portion of the former UPMC/St. Joseph Hospital site on College Avenue. The hospital site is directly across the street from Milagro House’s current location on the corner of West Chestnut Street and College Avenue. This offered Milagro House the opportunity to

remain in its current location while allowing for expansion at the former hospital site.

The sale of the Prince Street properties resulted from intentional conversations between Milagro House and Lancaster Redevelopment Fund that spanned over the course of the last year. The properties were not publicly listed for sale.

The Redevelopment Fund Inc. purchased the buildings at 132-134 S. Prince St. to address the increasing needs of housing insecurity of the Lancaster community. The community hub will be utilized to create a sustainable, robust response to housing insecurity, with a focus on a broader systems approach to addressing homelessness needs.

Reed named Track Athlete of the Week

Zachary Reed of Manheim was named Middle Atlantic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. Reed is a member of the men’s track team at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville.

Reed had a busy weekend running in two separate meets. On Feb. 17, the senior ran the 60-meter hurdles at the Penn State Tune-Up, finishing second against mainly Division II competition. He ran a time of 8.53 seconds in the preliminaries and then an hour later came back and ran 8.51 seconds in the final. He was the only Division III hurdler in his preliminary

heat and in the final.

Reed then ran the 400 meters for the first time in his career on Feb. 18 at the Susquehanna Tune-Up, finishing third with a MAC Championships qualifying time of 53.26 seconds. He then anchored the 4x200 meter relay team that finished second in 1 minute, 34.60 seconds, which is the fourth-fastest time in the MAC and 15th in the AARTFC this year.

Reed is a graduate of Manheim Central High School. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in global studies, international business, and political science at LVC.
