Every day, the Greenhouse Management and Landscape Design class is learning new things, facing challenges and honing leadership skills. The class will hold its inaugural plant sale from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on

Baron Stage Will Present “Mary Poppins” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

he’s practically perfect in every way, and she’s coming to the stage at Manheim Central High School. Baron Stage will present “Mary Poppins,” available for online viewing from Saturday, April 17, through Sunday, May 2. Based on the book by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” follows the story of the Banks children and their unique nanny. “It’s a really fun show, and there’s a lot of magic in it,” said Maddie Kreider, a junior who portrays the title character. “We’re experimenting with a lot of onstage magic, and that’s really helping to bring the story to life.” Kreider described the show as full of love. “It’s really a story about the love between the members of a family,” she said. “That love just needs some rekindling with the help of a nanny.” The show features a cast and crew of about 50 students, along with 18 students in the pit

“It’s a really fun show, and there’s a lot of magic in it. We’re experimenting with a lot of onstage magic, and that’s really helping to bring the story to life.” “It requires a different type of planning. There’s a lot more we can do to make it look really cool, but you can also see any flaws in our design or decorating. … I’m spending more time thinking about how the students are using their faces and how they are looking during closeups.”

Kreider added that being a performer in a recorded show requires a shift in onstage mindset. “One of the biggest differences as an actor is, we don’t have a live audience,” she said. “ We get a lot of our onstage energy from the audience, so we have to find ways to stay engaged with our audience even though they aren’t really here.” She noted that there are positives to be found with having to present a recorded show. “It’s nice because people who are not local, who are out of state even, can watch us perform and see the show, and they wouldn’t normally be able to do that,” she said. Along with Kreider, featured performers in the show are Zeke Ruffner as Bert, Eve Sheaffer as Winifred Banks, Maddie LaFrance as Jane Banks, Zoe Faulkner as Michael Banks and Paul Hurst as George Banks. Ticket cost for “Mary Poppins” is being covered by the Manheim Central School District. To order tickets, visit https://manheimcentral highschool.anywhereseat.com.

orchestra, said director Amber Friel. It is being filmed by students in the video production class, who also filmed the school’s fall production, “Robin Hood.” Performing a recorded show offers its own unique challenges, Friel noted. “It’s really a totally new ballgame from how I’d approach a traditional live performance,” she said.

Fridays, April 30 and May 7, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, May 1 and 8. The sale will be held at the greenhouse, 400 E. Adele Ave. For many years, Manheim Central students sold tomato plants at the Landis Valley Herb and Garden Faire. “This year, we decided as a class that we wanted to use our greenhouse to not only grow tomatoes, but to focus on marketing, learning new things and expanding a little,” said junior Anna Haldeman. “We decided to do more.” Plants available at the sale will include 31 varieties of tomatoes, 21 types of peppers and eight kinds of herbs, plus four varieties of squash along with watermelon, cantaloupe and eggplant.

When it came to raising funds this year for Brittany’s Hope, executive director Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd and her team got creative. “We usually do a big 5K fundraiser in the fall, but we had to scale that down this year,” Sahd said. “So, we came up with this idea of the 5K Mother’s Day Challenge.” The “race your way” event will run from Saturday, May 8, through Saturday, May 15. “It’s a way for people to participate in an easy, safe manner,” Sahd noted. “You just go to our website and choose how you want to participate.” There are multiple options for the fundraiser, which raises money for orphaned and at-risk children through adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. Participants may pick the distance of their choice and complete the miles anywhere and any way they choose, from walking to running, biking, inline skating and more. Participants may also choose to celebrate Mother’s Day through the event, Sahd said. “The beautiful piece of this is you have the option to honor or dedicate your race to a mother figure - any woman you respect - and we will write a Moth-

er’s Day card and send it out on your behalf,” she explained. “It’s a nice Mother’s Day gift to your mom or any influential woman in your life.” Sahd said although this is the first time Brittany’s Hope is doing a 5K this way, she has set lofty goals. “We would be absolutely thrilled to get over 400 participants to accept the challenge, establish 40 teams and together raise $30,000 for Brittany’s Hope,” she stated. “In challenging times like these, the work of high-impact charities like ours is critically needed. We are their only lifeline.” She added that 100% of the funds raised go directly to caring for vulnerable and orphaned children. This year’s race has a special significance for Sahd. Her 5-year-old son, Peter, will be participating. “He told me, ‘I want to race to help boys and girls who need mommies, daddies and toys,’” Sahd said, adding that Peter even picked out a unique team name - Team Dinomite - to reflect his love of dinosaurs. While Peter will be racing in honor of his grandmother, Sahd encourages anyone with a desire to give back and also honor women to participate in the event. “We can’t all get together as a community

like we have in the past, but we can still bring people together in a different way, united for one cause,” she stated. For more information on the Brittany’s Hope 5K Mother’s Day Challenge, visit www. brittanyshope5K.org.

Brittany’s Hope will hold a 5K Mother’s Day Challenge to raise funds for children like Samuel, who was adopted from Vietnam through a grant from the nonprofit organization.

Heart Of The Home Gala Posted

Manheim Christian Day School students show off some of the items that will be available at the school’s benefit auction on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24.

tional activities on Saturday will be a candy scramble and a presentation by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. Additional auction items will include outdoor furniture, John Deere equipment, Hersheypark tickets, plants and a chicken coop, Kosydar said. She emphasized that this year’s event is especially important for the school, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. “We were not able to have our auction last year, but we raised over $162,000 in 2019,” she noted. “All proceeds go toward helping to make Christian education affordable for more families, purchasing new technology and funding essential building projects.” For more information on the event, as well as a full schedule of activities, visit www.manheimchristian.org or call the school office at 717-665-4300.

United Zion Retirement Community will hold its Heart of the Home Gala on Thursday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. Due to COVID-19, the event will take place via Zoom; however, it will still include a meal, which may be enjoyed while watching the livestream. The gala will feature a few musicians from the United Zion community. The event will help to raise money for the Heart of the Home project, which includes a new chapel auditorium. Those purchasing tickets will have a choice of filet mignon with mushroom demi-glace with herbed cous cous or vegetarian Southwestern stuffed peppers with black beans and rice. All meals come with a starter of a Caesar salad, a side of asparagus spears with lemon butter and a lemon mousse cake with raspberry sauce for dessert. The meals are part of United Zion’s Home Apron program. As such, meals will come with preparation instructions so each person can prepare his or her filet mignon to the temperature of his or her liking. Meals can be picked up on April 29 between 7:30 and 10 a.m. or between 3 and 6 p.m. The meals will be fully prepared but not ready-to-eat, so there about 10 minutes of cooking time is required. To purchase tickets by Thursday, April 22, visit www.uzrc.org /giving/heart. From April 22 at noon to Thursday, April 29, at 9 p.m., there will be an online silent auction to help raise money for the Heart of the Home project. The auction will feature artwork, food, gift cards, golf, hotel stays and more from local businesses. The full list is available at www.uzrc.org/ giving/heart/silent-auction.

The Heart of the Home Project will move the chapel to the heart of the United Zion campus. It will also include a porte-cochere. The previous chapel, which could seat approximately 50 residents, was built 50 years ago when United Zion served about half the residents it currently serves. The new chapel auditorium will seat 125 people with room for overflow for larger events. The gala and silent auction are part of the fundraising campaign for the Heart of the Home and will help fund the cost of the project, which is estimated at $1 million. The gala is made possible with the support of Bomberger’s; Buch Family of Funeral Homes; Johnson, Kendall & Johnson; and Lezzer Lumber. Students from Lead Now, a seventhand eighth-grade student leadership group, will lead a welcome at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a live auction as well as presentations of class projects. “This includes the ‘Seed to Sow’ project, where each fourthgrade student is given $10 to use toward creating and selling a product to sell in the month leading up to the auction,” Kosydar explained. “Each of their products is then auctioned off that evening. (Other) items for the auction will include a children’s wooden picnic table, a handmade quilt, yard games and dessert trays, all personalized by individual classes.” On Saturday, the live auction will begin at 9 a.m. Specific items will be highlighted throughout the day, such as tools, hunting, camping and fishing items, lawn and garden equipment, general merchandise and gift certificates. Saturday will also feature children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, face painting and games. Among the addi-

LMHS To Present “All The World’s A Stage” BY ANN MEAD ASH

According to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) the-

ater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had

Manheim

to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of acting and added singing and

dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).” “All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West

Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Shows will be staged on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 29, 30, and May 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets, and they are welcome to bring picnic lunches to create their own dinner theater experience. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be pre-

sented between the skits. Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. When East Fairview Church of the Brethren members began looking for a new pastor in 2020 after their pastor of 23 years announced his retirement, they didn’t have to look far. Ryan Clift, who became the new senior pastor earlier this year, spent most of his childhood in Manheim. That was part of the appeal of the position, he said. “I was excited to come back to Manheim, having been raised in the community,” explained Clift, who was installed in January at the church, located at 1187 Fairview Road in Manheim. “So many people in Manheim had a hand in playing an influential role in my life, from my family to parents of friends to teachers and coaches. Being able to come back and carry on that tradition of building up the lives of the young people in our community was very appealing to me.” After graduating from Millersville University with a degree in business management, Clift worked for Signature Staffing in the Harrisburg area but also volunteered at Ephrata Church of the Brethren. While volunteering, he felt called to attend seminary, so he earned a Master of Divinity and became pastor of the Conewago Church of the Brethren in Hershey in 2019. Ann Moyer, chair of East Fairview’s search committee, said Clift was the perfect choice for senior pastor. “Pastor Ryan has strong Christian convictions and biblical knowledge,” she stated. “He is approachable and always available to dialogue about what the Bible tells us. He is very grounded and has

the initiative to work towards fulfilling the vision of the church to reach those who need Jesus.” Clift said his main goal for the church - and for himself as pastor - is to help others to know and live for Jesus. “We are trying to be a light in the community and help others,” he said. “We are just everyday people, men and women doing our best to try and live for Jesus, and we understand that we might not always get it right, but that we’re trying to Ryan Clift, husband of Kaila and father of Evelyn and do our best. We want to share Luke, became senior pastor of East Fairview Church the good news of Jesus with of the Brethren in January. the community.” Since Since Moyer said Clift has fit right 1939 1939 ALDEMAN in at the church. “Even though he’s been with us for a short ECHANICAL time, our experience so far has NC. 717-665-6910 confirmed that he was the right choice,” she remarked. “We feel Sales and 24-Hour Service extremely blessed to have him Protecting Your 1148 Old Line Road, Manheim as our senior pastor and expect www.haldemanmechanical.com Home for 82 Years! others who may learn to know him would feel the same.” PLUMBING - HEATING - COOLING East Fairview Church of the WATER CONDITIONING Brethren holds services on PA7777 Sundays at 9 a.m. For more information, visit https://east “THE ORIGINAL HACKMAN” fairview.com.

Barons Win Again, Top Lancaster Mennonite

BY ERIC G. STARK

Jeremiah Zimmerman and Blake Wagner are two veterans on the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball team carrying the mojo of playing on section and district championship squads into this season. The senior duo did the heavy lifting as the Barons pulled out a 3-2 victory against Lancaster Mennonite on April 5 in Manheim. The Barons haven’t lost a match in section-play - 39-0, a streak that is now in its fourth season. After dropping the first game 2225, Manheim bounced back to win 25-15 and 25-20. The Blazers rallied to even the contest at two games apiece, winning the fourth game 2521. Momentum was swinging in LHM’s favor when Barons’ coach Craig Dietrich delivered his words of encouragement. “I told them we need to get out and play with a lead and make LMH play catch up,” he said. “We started off with an ace from junior Trent Groff and took a 5-1 lead.” With the lead, the Barons held on for a 15-12 win. Zimmerman, who had 42 assists and four digs and Wagner who added 23 thundering kills, “showed up big for us,” Dietrich said. Jacob Moyer, who is the son of Jason Moyer, Manheim Central’s girls’ volleyball coach, had five aces and Barend Oostdam put up four blocks. The Barons need Zimmerman, a returning All-State player from two years ago, and Blake, who Dietrich calls a Swiss Army knife because of his versatility, to play big because MC starts three freshmen and a junior next to these seniors. The freshmen include Moyer, an outside hitter; Logan Groff, an outside/right-side hitter; and Peter Burkhart, a back row specialist and younger brother to Ben Burkhart, who was a two-time All-State selection as a

setter for the Barons a few years ago. The Barons beat Cocalico 3-0 on April 1. Game scores were 25-7, 25-12 and 25-17. Groff served three 3 aces, and Moyer had a block. Wagner added 16 kills and three digs and Zimmerman had 29 assists. SOFTBALL The Lady Barons beat Elco 8-3 on April 5 in Manheim. Emma Damon was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Miranda Ober was 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple, and Maddie Moyer was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. In the circle, Gabbie Wettig fanned eight batters and walked three. “The key to the game was keeping pressure on (ELCO) offensively,” Barons’ coach Janelle Haying said, “which we did very well.” Moyer, a senior third baseman/first base; Damon, a junior shortstop, Wettig, a junior pitcher and first baseman; and Mickey Lauver, a sophomore center fielder; are all key returners or impact players. Haying believes she has some athletes, and she likes their commitment. “The key to our success this season is how determined and hardworking our team is,” she said. “The athletes communicate well on and off the field and have been dedicated to overcoming losing last year’s season and putting their all into this year. We have a versatile team, and I am excited to see all they accomplish this year.” Manheim beat Octorara 14-3 on April 7. Wettig was 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and an RBI. Damon was 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBIs and was hit by a pitch, and Brianna Mylin was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Wettig earned the win, striking out four and walking one. BASEBALL The Barons beat Elco 5-0 in Myerstown on April 5. Colton Book pitched five innings of

no-hit baseball, striking out 13. Collin Thompson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Riley McGallicher was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Wyatt Becker pitched the last two innings striking out three and surrendering one hit. Though not part of the big picture, Becker has become a strong closer in games. The plan is to eventually have him as a starting pitcher, but seeing him have success now may help during the Barons’ post season run. He’s been a valuable asset on the mound late in games. “Yes, he has,” Barons’ coach Jason Thompson said. “He will definitely start for us here, but it actually works out for him also pitching in more games and getting his arm in shape from basketball finishing later than normal.” The Barons beat Octorara 11-2 on April 7. Connor Rohrer went six innings to collect the win. Book hit a two-run homer. Collin Thompson and Drew Mylin each had RBI singles. Riley McGallicher had an RBI double.

TENNIS Manheim bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Cedar Crest on April 5 to beat Lebanon 7-0 on April 6. David Graff and Tyler Snavely defeated Cody Zheng and Luke Collins of Lebanon, 8-0. Ben Ginder and Hunter Shoenfelt won 8-4 at No. 2 and Andrew Donmoyer and Rodney Sauder won 8-5. “Andrew Donmoyer, a first-year player and a senior in his third varsity match, and Rodney Sauder, a freshman in his first varsity match, were down 2-5 on third court doubles,” head coach Ryan Jeckel said. “They battled back and won six straight games to win the court.” In singles, Andrew Rajaratnam, Graff, Tyler Snavely and Ginder all won in straight sets. The Barons suffered a 5-2 loss to Donegal on April 7. Graff and Snavely won 8-5 for the only doubles win. Trailing 2-1 going into singles, Rajaratnam, the Barons’ No. 1, beat Luke Yunginger, 6-7 (2), 6-0, 10-2,

evening the team score at 2-2. But the Indians won the next three singles to finish on top. TRACK The boys defeated Lebanon 103-47 April 6 in Manheim. The Barons, with 60 points on the track, opened the meet by winning the 4x800 relay with Michael Greenwald, Brady Knier, Luke Redcay and Gabe Redcay. Manheim swept the high hurdles with Nathan Reed, Landon McGallicher and Connor Fahnestock ran an 18:0. Reed also won the 300 hurdles and was part of the winning 4 x400 relay with Gabe Redcay, Logan Burkholder, and Josh Moore. Gabe Redcay also won the 800 meters. His brother, Luke, was second and Greenwald was third. Owen Pappas won the 100 meters and Josh Moore took the 400. In the jumps, Zach Witmer, who won the triple, led a long jump

sweep with Kade Kegarise and Max Hudson placing second and third, respectively. Kagarise won the javelin. Landon Watch won the shot put. On the girls’ side, Manheim beat Lebanon 98-52. The 4x800 meter relay team of Cadence Getz, Jenna Miller, Halie Mayfield, and Sarah Forry opened with a win. Manheim also swept the hurdles with Abby Reed, Makenna Enck and Liz Voegele. Malea Stoner had a big day with top times in the 100, and the 300 hurdles. She was also part of the winning 4x100 relay team with Milan Snell, Enck and Mikayla Appel. Sarah Forry won the 800 meters. Manheim won the 4x400 relay with Snell, Mayfield, Enck and Reed. Maddie Knier dominated the jumps, winning the long, triple, and high. She also won the javelin.

Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. Student Sofia MascialeWalmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies. Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. There will be opportunities to donate to the Lancaster Mennonite drama group. Parkinson’s Wellness Event Posted

R068943

®

In recognition of April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Lititz recCenter will host its third annual Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle on Saturday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be limited to 25 attendees so that guests can be wellspaced for comfort and safety. The event will feature a free forum for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease. Attendees will meet experts who are local professionals working in Parkinson’s disease and related fields. Information about fitness for Parkinson’s recovery, speech therapy, wellness and massage, and residential living services will be among the information and resources shared. Fitness programs that Lititz recCenter offers for Parkinson’s wellness will be showcased, and individuals and their partners or caregivers will be provided an opportunitity to try elements of regularly offered programs. Attendees are encouraged to dress in comfortable clothing to participate in a light exercise demonstration of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) classes. RSB at the Lititz recCenter is in its third year, and the program has doubled in number of participants. RSB is led by certified coach and personal trainer Erica Johnson, who is Lititz recCenter’s fitness coordinator. This program is focused on maintaining functional health of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Largescale movements and smaller muscular control are both engaged throughout the classes, which incorporate boxing routines. RSB is supported by trained volunteers who seek to help each participant get the most out of classes regardless of physical ability. The Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle is free to attend. Staff and guests are asked to wear face coverings while participating in the program. Participants should register in advance by contacting Johnson at 717-626-5096, ext. 225, or emailing fitness@lititzrec.com.
