Morethan 1,000 antique, classic and muscle cars, plus tuners, street rods, motorcycles and scale model cars will be showcased at LCBC Church’s 22nd annual Motorsports Show. The free-entry show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The rain date for the show will be Saturday, June 17.

This year’s show will celebrate Mighty MOPAR Muscle, featuring a variety of high-performance cars produced by the Chrysler Corporation. These cars, including rare models, will be spotlighted in a designated parking area. Additional highlights of the show include information about land speed racing at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Drivers and owners who built the unique vehicles will talk about their experiences, including setting speed

records of up to 317 mph. Land speed racers Don Gilmore and Bob Dauernheim will lead a presentation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the west wing auditorium at LCBC Manheim. Speed racers the Iron Dinosaur and TEAM 608 Lakester will be available for up-close viewing.

Two local students have been awarded the Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, given to residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. This year’s winners are Noelle J. Rohrer and Logan S. McGallicher.

Noelle, a homeschool student, is the daughter of Travis and Leigh Ann Rohrer of Lititz. She plans to attend Liberty University to earn a Bachelor of Nursing. “Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a nurse,” Noelle said. “My grandma, cousin and youth leader, all influential people in my life, were See Scholarships pg 7

A variety of food vendors will be on-site for the show, including Big Bob’s BBQ and Bricker’s Famous French Fries, as well as food from LCBC’s Café Connections and drinks provided by Kreider Farms. Free face painting and inflatables as well as an R/C racing track will be available for children.

The show is open to people of all ages and to all vehicle types. There

is no charge to enter as a spectator or to register a car. Vehicles may be registered at www.lcbcchurch.com /motorsports.

“The LCBC Motorsports Show is a great community event for the whole family,” said Dean Hershey, men’s ministry coordinator for the Manheim campus and Motorsports Show lead team member. “Everybody loves great cars, motorcycles and just having fun.”

He noted that the show offers a way to showcase both unique vehicles and LCBC as well. “People can come and check out a great show, but they can also get to know LCBC and see what LCBC offers families and the community,” he remarked.

LCBC stands for Lives Changed By Christ. It’s a contemporary church with a weekly attendance of more than 23,000 people at 19 locations throughout Pennsylvania as well as online. More information may be found at www.lcbcchurch.com.

“Each year on the second Sunday of June, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church honors the legacy of Henry William Stiegel and his gift of a plot of ground to the Lutheran congregation,” stated Linda Keiffer, church member and chair of the Festival of the Red Rose committee. “Stiegel originally held religious ceremonies for the congregation on the second floor of his mansion. As the congregation grew, he realized that a larger place of worship was needed; hence, he deeded a plot of ground to the congregation to construct a new church with the

rent of a red rose to one of his heirs. This has been the church’s history for over 250 years and has the distinction of being celebrated annually.”

This year’s Festival of the Red Rose will be held on Sunday, June 11, at the church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim. The morning worship service and payment of the rent of the red rose will take place at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Penrose Hoover, retired bishop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, serving as guest preacher. Prior to the morning worship service, refreshments, sponsored by the Manheim Historical Society, will be served in the church’s Rose Parlor.

Although the red rose payment began in 1772, it stopped for more than 100 years until it was revived in 1892 after the construction of the current church building.

Robert A. Henkel from Fort Defiance, Va., will accept this year’s red rose payment on behalf of the Henry William Stiegel family. He is an eighth-generation descendant of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Henkel was an elementary school teacher, served as a social worker, and was

owner and operator of Flower and Foliage of Virginia, a retail florist shop. He is married to the former Barbara Austin.

Attorney J.D. Young Jr. from the law firm of Young & Young in Manheim will serve as Zion’s legal representative to oversee the signing of the rent book by this year’s Stiegel heir.

Keiffer said the festival is a unique opportunity to focus on the history of the church.

“To witness the Festival of the Red Rose celebration and the payment of the rent of a red rose to a descendant of

Stiegel each year is unlike anything that would be held, most likely, in the world today,” she remarked. “To me, it is just such an honor to be a participant in this special service, and I would encourage individuals to attend the rose service to experience a oneof-a-kind historical event.”

With compassion projects, Love INC seeks to build stronger communities

Something wonderful happens when volunteers put their faith into practice and help others.

At Love In the Name of Christ (INC) of Lancaster County, people do this through “the compassion projects.”

“Part of what we believe is that God calls us to live out our faith and serve,” said Katie Leaman, the communications and donor development director for Love INC of Lancaster County. “We provide resources and opportunities to serve, and we’re able to help the community by listening to their needs. Our goal is to help people with financial needs remain in their homes or

make their homes more accessible.”

Currently, Love INC is looking for people in need to help and for volunteers to provide that help for its compassion projects. Many of the compassion projects focus on minor home repairs and additions like yard projects, painting, small electrical fixes and adding handicapped-accessible ramps.

Participants, who must demonstrate specific needs, either physical or financial, are encouraged to reach out to Love INC of Lancaster County. Love INC provides volunteer labor and many of the materials required for its compassion projects.

Participants for Love INC’s compassion projects must also reside in the War-

wick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, Ephrata, Cocalico, Elizabethtown, Donegal and Hempfield school districts.

“Right now, there’s a big push on to get the word out to people who might have needs,” said Leaman. “We’re waiting to help people. We do our best to meet all the calls, but if we can’t, we try to connect people to other resources. When we receive calls, we try to connect local residents with our partner churches in their areas. It’s essentially a mission trip to your backyard.”

Last year, Love INC received between 200 and 300 requests for services as part of its compassion projects. Some 250 volunteers from Love INC’s 32 member churches completed about 100 of those projects in 2022.

“I want people to know that serving is a call for Christians,” said Leaman. “It can be very easy. There are people in need in your neighborhood, and you may not even realize it. Our nonprofit mission is to mobilize the Lord’s churches to serve the community. We partner

Barons top York Catholic; fall in district semis

Pick your favorite cliché, maybe it is ‘Déjà vu all over again’ or maybe you prefer the 90’s cult classic movie ‘Groundhog Day’, either way if you are a fan of the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball team and it feels like you have traveled this postseason road before, it is because you have.

For the second consecutive year the Barons hit a roadblock in the semifinal round of the

District 3-2A tournament. This time it was a 3-2 loss to Exeter Township on May 30th that derailed Central’s district title hopes. Pushing the loss further down heartbreak road would be that Manheim was up 2-0 after opening the match with wins of 25-23 and 25-19. That all took place before the Eagles found their groove, claiming games three and four by nearly identical scores of 25-20 and 25-22.

Exeter continued their roll, taking the decisive fifth game by a

15-12 final, handing Manheim their first loss of the season.

Dylan Musser, Logan Groff, and Colin Roher fronted Central’s efforts. Musser with 56 assists and three blocks, Groff with 23 kills and Rohrer with 31 digs and one ace. Landon Mattiace matched Musser’s three blocks.

Manheim Central earned that semifinal slot with a win on the 25th, slipping by York Catholic in the quarterfinals. Central was able to collect their

11th 3-0 sweep of the season but all three games were closely contested. The Barons squeaked out wins of 25-22 and 25-23 to put York Catholic on the brink before finishing the sweep with a 25-17 game three win.

Musser was again at the forefront of things with 42 assists and nine digs. Jacob Moyer finished with 15 kills, seven digs and one ace while Peter Burkhart added seven kills and seven digs. Toby Frey chipped in with six kills and four blocks while Reagan Miller collected a team high 14 digs. Roher added eight digs in the win.

TRACK

Two members of the track and field team, Maddie Knier and Landon McGallicher, made the return trip to Shippensburg University and Seth Grove Stadium for the 2023 edition of the PIAA Championship Meet on May 26th and 27th.

Knier kept busy, taking part in four different events with the senior’s top finish coming in the long jump. There, her top leap of 17’ 7.75” was good enough to earn a spot on the medal stand, slotting her 6th in the 27-member field. Knier saved her best javelin work for last, popping an 8th place throw of 129’ 1” on her sixth and final throw. Knier’s work in the triple jump left her just off the medal stand in 9th place but the 36’ 10.5” was the top showing from the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Knier’s final event was the high jump where she faltered a bit, missing all three attempts at 5’

McGallicher took part in just one event in Shippensburg, the 110 high hurdles in the 3A com-

petition. The senior’s PIAA run ended in the second heat of the preliminary round where his 15.21 was 0.25 seconds outside the qualifying time needed to make the finals.

or are nurses, so growing up, I’ve heard a lot of stories, advice and encouragement. This has all played a big part in my decision to pursue nursing.”

Noelle has been involved in the Manheim Central girls’ soccer program throughout middle and high school. At her church, she serves on the leadership team and in the praise band, and she is a member of the youth group.

“Noelle demonstrated selfmotivation and discipline by her academic GPA, having already earned 36 college credits, and her involvement in youth mission trips, both in the States and abroad,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS, which sponsors the scholarship. “Her goal is to be a psychiatric nurse, and she demonstrated in her application and in the various service and mission projects she’s been involved in that she is likely going to excel in her continued academic career, as well as her future career endeavors in the medical field.”

Logan, a senior at Manheim Central High School, is the son of Eric and Mary McGallicher of Manheim. After graduation, he plans to attend Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences in the radiography program. “I’ve always enjoyed helping people, and everyone tells me I am very compassionate so I

thought something in the medical field would be a good fit for me,” Logan shared. “I was able to volunteer in the medical imaging department at Penn Medicine Kissel Hill this past fall semester. I did that as an internship for school credit and really liked the combination of working with people and the technology of the machines. I would like to eventually specialize as an MRI tech.” At Manheim Central, Logan played baseball for all four years of high school and played on the golf team his senior year.

“Logan took advantage of a volunteer internship opportunity in radiology and applied himself to learn as much as he could, resulting in him choosing to focus his education and career goals to his specific field of interest,” Shenk remarked. “Those providing letters of recommendation shared that Logan is focused, quick to volunteer and eager to learn as much as he can so that he can best help the patient under his care.”

The Robert C. Stirling Scholarship is named in memory and honor of Robert “Bob” C. Stirling, a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association and an active volunteer in the community.

and connect with churches across the county.”

An affiliate of a national movement, the local Love INC is a network of 160 Lancaster County churches from 24 denominations.

Founded locally in Ephrata 15 years ago, Love INC also engages in missions of temporary housing, elderly transportation and the fielding of other types of calls from the community.

“Some of the early board members saw this need for churches to serve their communities, and they thought this was a good model,” said Leaman. “Over the years, the mission has changed in various different ways. We’ve tried to ebb and flow with the county. We’ve also changed as churches have changed.”

To become involved with Love INC’s compassion projects as either a participant or a volunteer, call 717-7357540, ext. 8.
