SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LXIII • NO 19

A Night Of Music And Worship Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a concert by tenor Timothy Bentch and his daughter, Emma, on Sunday, June 26. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in front of the newly renovated schoolhouse across the street from Crossings Community Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim. “The primary goal of the evening is to have people in the community come together for a nice night to enjoy the music and worship together,” said pastor Rich Nolt.

Volunteers in the Manheim Central Food Pantry

Nourishing The Community “We’re here to serve the community, and now we know this is our forever home,” said Cathy Knittle, chairperson of the Manheim Central Food Pantry. The pantry is marking its 10th anniversary at 334 W. Gramby St., and the organization recently purchased the property from Salem United Methodist Church (UMC). The purchase has allowed the food pantry to continue its mission of helping to alleviate hunger by increasing access to food for people in the community at no cost and in a caring and respectful manner. For years, the Manheim Central Food Pantry operated out of a basement in a local church. The space was small, and the volunteers had to haul prepacked bags of items up the stairs to distribute to the community. Then a staff member at Salem UMC suggested using the church parsonage to house the pantry. “A generous donor gave us some money that helped us make the move,” Knittle recalled. “We jumped at the chance.” Volunteers completed renovations, including installing new

flooring and converting a back porch into a storage room, and the pantry opened in September 2012. The home has provided plenty of room to keep shelf-stable, frozen and refrigerated items. The food pantry relies on contributions and support from the community to continue its mission. Several freezers were donated by the Manheim Rotary Club, and arrangements with local farmers and grocery stores and the Manheim Farm Show keep the pantry stocked with meat. “ We have a family that donates milk and eggs weekly,” Knittle remarked, noting that another family recently donated a chest freezer. “People in this community are very generous.” Along with food products, the pantry stocks personal care items such as toilet paper, shampoo and soap. Clients must live in the Manheim Central School District and must complete a self-declaration annually, listing their income and the number of people in their household. “We’re what’s called a ‘supplemental choice’ food pantry,” Knittle said, explaining that clients can visit once a month and choose from a

variety of items within specific food categories. The pantry is part of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which regulates how much food a household can get depending on its size and helps support the food pantry financially. Knittle said there is a growing need for the food pantry in Manheim, noting that the organization served an average of 119 households or 330 individuals a month for the first four months of 2022. “We are registering new people almost every day,” she said. The pantry officially purchased the property in early May, and Knittle said a capital campaign will launch soon. The organization is under the umbrella of the Manheim Ministerium, which owns the mortgage, but the bill will be paid by the pantry. A formal open house will be scheduled in September when the pantry marks its official anniversary in the home. For more information on the Manheim Central Food Pantry, visit www.manheim centralfoodpantry.org or call Ruth Ellen Brown, the pantry client coordinator, at 717-664-1097.

Marking History With A Red Rose BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has been a place of worship in Manheim for 250 years, thanks to a red rose. That’s the payment the original landowner requested in exchange for building a church on the site, and the church celebrates the Festival of the Red Rose annually to commemorate the transaction. This year’s festivities will take place on Sunday, June 12, at the church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, See Rose pg 3

The concert is also a benefit for Global Disciples, a Lancaster-based organization that promotes Christian-led initiatives around the world. “It will be an opportunity for people to hear about what’s happening with Global Disciples and have the opportunity to support them financially as well,” Nolt stated. The concert will feature spirituals, Broadway tunes, contemporary Christian music and worship songs. Timothy began his singing experience in his local Mennonite church, singing with the gospel group The Bentch Brothers. He went on to perform with opera houses and symphonic orchestras in Europe, Asia and the United States. For 10 years, he was the leading soloist with the Hungarian State Opera. He also enjoys performing pop concerts with Emma. Along with the concert, the evening will include stories from Galen Burkholder and Brother Tefera of Global Disciples. They will sign copies of their new book, “Ordinary Disciples, Extraordinary Influence: Stories to Fuel a Life of Unshakable Faith.” Burkholder is the CEO of the organization, and Tefera is an Ethiopian-born Christian leader.

beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. James S. Dunlop, bishop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, preaching. The church’s history can be traced to an agreement between Henry William Stiegel and his second wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveying a plot of ground to their fellow Lutherans in 1772, said Linda Keiffer, chair of the festival committee, in exchange for a unique continual payment of one red rose. Keiffer said that it’s believed that Henry only received the rose rent twice before he lost his fortune, ended up in debtor’s prison and left Manheim upon his release in 1774. Although the red rose tradition could have been lost, the original deed was discovered in the church archives during construction of the present church building in 1891, and in June of 1892, a Stiegel heir received the rose payment for the first time in more than 100 years. The celebration and rose payment, originally known as The Feast of the Roses, became an annual event, and each year on the second Sunday of June, the congregation pays the rent of one red rose to a Stiegel heir. This year, the church will mark its 250th anniversary, so the festival will feature the presentation of two roses, one representing each familial line from Stiegel’s two wives, Keiffer said. One rose will be presented to William Hoyt Demmerly, a ninth-generation descendent of Henry and his first wife, Elizabeth Huber Stiegel. A retired dentist from New Jersey, Demmerly has attended the Festival of the Red Rose since he was a child. The other rose will be presented to John “JT” Trible IV, a 10th-generation descendent of Henry and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel. Trible

has spent most of his life in Iowa and is finishing a master’s degree in teaching. He will begin a position as an English teacher in Mesa, Ariz., in the fall and hopes to become a published novelist. Keiffer ex plained that because the payment of the red rose and the signing of the rent book is a legal transaction, J.D. Young Jr. from the law firm of Young & Young in Manheim will serve as Zion’s legal representative during the presentation. For more information on the Festival of the Red Rose, visit www.zion manheim.com or call the church office at 717665-5880.

Teams Invited To Basketball Tournament BY CATHY MOLITORIS

In the parking lot of Calvary Bible Church in Mount Joy, a community space is calling. The church, located at 629 Union School Road, is home to basketball courts used regularly by local youths. Now, thanks to Bill Osborne, those courts will be the site of a three-on-three men’s basketball tournament, which will be held on Saturday, June 25, beginning at 9 a.m. “This is open to any men ages 16 and up,” noted Osborne, a basketball enthusiast who is also a church elder. “The intent is to connect with the community, have fun and engage in some friendly competition.” Entry to the tournament is free, and a minimum of three players per team is required to sign up. Teams will be randomly paired up in the double-elimination tournament, and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. The

games will follow traditional three-on-three rules and regulations, Osborne explained, including half-court play and no three-point baskets. PIAA referees will be available for each game. Osborne first learned of a community basketball tournament when he lived in Michigan. The idea of holding one in Mount Joy marinated in his mind for years before he finally decided to organize one last fall. “The competition was really terrific, and we had some quite intense games, but it was all in fun,” he said of the October 2021 event. When it came time to organize the second tournament, he decided to move the event to the spring for warmer weather. Osborne, who is not a basketball player himself, said the event offers an opportunity to get outside and have fun. “I’m just a basketball fan,” he said. “I’m here to enjoy the camaraderie of the

Refreshments will be available during the tournament. In the event of rain, the tournament will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 9. Space is limited, so teams are encouraged to register early. To register, call the church office at 717-653-5857 or email office@cbcmj.com.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the ballroom at Lititz Springs Inn & Spa, 14 E. Main St., Lititz. Safety professionals from Community Safety & Security Consultants (CSSC) will present information on personal safety and how to better identify, avoid, and react to potentially dangerous situations or events. Topics will include increasing situational awareness, parking lot and vehicle safety, home safety and security, dating/campus safety, parent protection from child predators, senior safety measures, and selfdefense options. Prizes, giveaways, and refreshments will be included in the program. The seminar is free. To regis-

ter, visit www.KeepingCommu nitiesSafe.com. Attendees may also register at the door. Lancaster Museum of Art and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s (PCA&D) Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) are partnering to offer an in-person summer art camp for students in grades two to six. The camp will use the museum’s permanent collection not only to teach students about what it is like to work in a museum, but also to inspire new works of art to be shown in exhibition. “From Making to Museum: A Lancaster Museum of Art and PCA&D Art Camp” will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15. Young artists will meet practicing, professional artists; learn about museum careers; and create art, which will be displayed with pieces from the museum’s collection in an exhibition at the camp’s conclusion. Campers will be on-site at both Lancaster Museum of Art and PCA&D, a 10-

minute walk away, and will be escorted between the two locations. At the museum’s morning sessions, campers will work directly with artists and other professionals in the field on writing about art, discussing museum careers such as curator and art handler, and choosing a Lancaster Museum of Art piece that will inspire their own artwork. In the afternoon at PCA&D, they will create their own artworks, which will be exhibited in the gallery at PCA&D through late July alongside the museum’s piece that inspired the campers’ artwork. The exhibition will then travel to the Lancaster City Visitor Center in Penn Square for First Friday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. and will remain on display through Tuesday, Aug. 23. For details and registration, visit www.pcad.edu and search for Art Camp.

Barons Advance to District 3 5A Title Game

BY ERIC PYLES

They may not have reached ‘cardiac kids’ level but the Manheim Central baseball team is working towards that nickname. The Barons closed out May with a 6-5 win over Susquehannock, securing a spot in the District 35A Championship game with their third straight walk-off win in as many games. “Super proud of their perseverance and late game one run toughness,” said head coach Jason Thompson. “They have been mentally tough throughout!” Collin Thompson was the hero against Susquehannock, lofting a sac fly to right that allowed Brady Harbach to complete his trip around the bases after a leadoff double. Nolan Book helped the cause with a fly out to center that moved Harbach into prime position. The game ended with much needed heroics but as it began it appeared that Manheim would roll to an easy win, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just one inning into the semifinal tilt. A trio of Warrior walks loaded the bases for Thompson’s first RBI, a single to left that made it 1-0. Cayde Connelly picked up his lone RBI with a sac fly of his own making it a quick 2-0. Central pushed their lead to 30 in the third with a Harbach single to center but Susquehannock shut down the rally with three quick outs. The Warriors put one on the board in the top of the fourth, but Manheim bounced back with two more in the bot-

tom half for a 5-1 edge. Both of those runs came as a result of five free passes issued by Susquehannock pitchers in the frame with Harbach and Book picking up the RBIs. Bats went silent until the top of the sixth where Susquehannock plated four runs to tie it at 5-5, setting up Thompson’s game winning sac fly. Cole Lawhorne ended up with the win, tossing the final one and two-thirds innings and allowing no runs and one hit. Connelly got the start and covered the initial five and one-third innings, allowing six hits and all five runs but only two earned. Connelly added three strikeouts and two walks to his day. Manheim earned that semifinal berth with their second straight walk off win, this one over Red Land on the 26th. “Super proud of the guy’s perseverance, and mental toughness to come out on top of these one run walk off wins,” said Thompson. This time it was Book playing the hero, ripping a single to right that allowed Mason Weaver to score. Weaver also played a part in Central’s first run, using his lone hit of the game to drive in Andrew Harrison that knotted the game at 1-1. Connelly needed only eight pitches to collect the win, covering the final two outs in relief of Connor Rohrer. Rohrer’s work covered the initial six and onethird innings with the senior striking out nine and walking two to go with one unearned run. TRACK The track and field season

ended with Landon McGallicher and Madison Knier returning to Shippensburg University for the PIAA Championship Meet on May 27th and 28th. The duo took part in five events with Knier’s seventh place in the javelin the lone podium finish for the Barons. Knier’s 130-1 toss was her best by nearly ten feet and counts as a top 25 throw in PA. Knier fell off the high jump podium on misses, finishing 10th despite her top jump of 5-2 being the same as Anna Scoblick (Abington Heights) and Ashley Laukus (Norwin) who shared eighth place. That height was still good enough for a PA top 50 height according to PAMileSplit.com. Knier added another 10th place finish, this one in the long jump thanks to a leap of 17-2.25”. McGallicher experienced some heartbreak, failing to make it out of the preliminary round of both the 110H and the 300H. The heartbreak was worse in the 110H where his prelim time of 15.27 was good enough for a PA Top 50 mark but still left McGallicher in ninth and out of the finals by 0.04 seconds. McGallicher experienced more frustration in the 300H where his prelim time of 40.19 placed him 11th overall, just 0.49 seconds out of the finals but was good enough for a PA Top 50. VOLLEYBALL It might be rarified air for some but for the Central boys’ volleyball team this is expected. With a 3-0 sweep over Lansdale

Catholic on May 31st, the Barons find themselves in the PIAA-2A quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row. “We came in knowing we were the better team and we wanted to play at our pace and not theirs,” said head coach Craig Dietrich. “Our guys did a good job of executing and staying focused.” That focus led to easy wins of 25-13 and 25-11 with the Crusaders putting up a fight and making Manheim earn the match in a 25-20 game three win. Dylan Musser led the way with 34 assists, five blocks, three kills and two aces. Trent Groff added 14 kills while John Wenger had 14 digs. Kevin Saengdara chipped in with four

kills and two aces. The Barons earned that PIAA spot opposite Lansdale Catholic by knocking off Garden Spot, 32 on the 26th, securing a District 3-2A bronze in the process. The two teams traded blows with Manheim opening with a 26-24 win only to see Spot claim game two 25-20. The Barons used the same score to take game three but were unable to close out the match with the Spartans forcing a fifth and final game thanks to a 25-17 win. Central righted their ship in time to steal the match with a 15-13 victory. “These kids have a ton of gut and mettle, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they responded in the face of adversity,” Diet-

rich stated. Musser was at the forefront of the attack, finishing with 33 assists with Jacob Moyer (12 kills), Barend Oostdam (11 kills) and Groff (11 kills) letting it rip on the other end of those assists. Wenger collected 16 digs with Moyer adding 11 of his own. The win over Garden Spot was a bounce back variety after the Barons dropped a 3-0 final to York Suburban on the 25th. The 25-17, 25-20 and 25-22 loss not only ended Manheim’s district title hopes, it nearly derailed their PIAA dreams as well. Musser managed just 11 assists while Moyer and Peter Burkhart shared team high honors with six kills. Wenger finished with 10 digs.

REYS To Host Backpack Donation Competition BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Since 2012, Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) has been giving away backpacks filled with school supplies to students in grades one through 12. To prepare for this year’s giveaway in August, the center’s staff members have refocused their

efforts. “People have wanted to know how to help with our backpack distribution, and they’ve donated so many school supplies, which we really appreciate,” said Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS. “We want to make sure every student gets the same thing, and we realized,

‘What is our biggest need? We need the backpacks themselves.’” To reach its goal of providing plenty of backpacks, REYS is holding the Summer Sprint to 600, a backpack donation competition. “We want a lot of variety for the students to choose from and not have them come in and see 200 of the same backpack, because that’s discouraging to kids,” Paden explained. “We’re inviting area groups, churches, organizations, businesses and families to come together to purchase and donate new backpacks for our distribution.” The organization’s goal is to collect 600 backpacks, since that’s the average number

that REYS gives away each year. Although the official distribution dates are in August, REYS supports local students year-round. “We have a great relationship with the local school social workers, so if a request comes through for a backpack during the school year, the answer is always ‘yes,’” Paden remarked. The team that collects the most backpacks will receive special recognition, she said, encouraging everyone to help with the effort. “The heartbeat of the backpack distribution at REYS is we want to see every student flourish,” Paden commented. “One piece is helping them be ready for the academic school year ahead, and being prepared with a

The Summer Sprint to 600 is an invitation for the community to be a part of that mission, Paden stated. “We want to invite communi-

ty members to walk alongside the students, and one way they can do this is by providing backpacks,” she said. “It’s an easy way to help.” Backpacks may be dropped off at REYS, 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The deadline for donations is Friday, July 29. for. Somebody recommended VisionCorps, and I contacted them. They jumped into action,” he said. “I was assigned a client manager, and they evaluated my needs and provided me with mobility and occupational and vocational rehab.” “I have never been charged a dime for the services I received,” he added. VisionCorps also provided Hora with technology training that allows him to use his smartphone and a computer. “I suffered significant vision loss two years ago. I lost the ability to read texts, so I got introduced to a software program called JAWS that allows me to use the computer,” he said. “It actually reads what is on the screen and tells me what I am typing in. It’s like learning a whole new language.” Hora is taking part in the Eye Drop fundraiser for the third time. “This year I promised myself to give it more time coming down,” he said. “They do a great job with training. It’s very safe. They take all the safety precautions.”

Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. A new attraction at this year’s Eye Drop will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. To learn more about the event or to register as a participant, visit www.EyeDrop2022.org. Hora, an outdoorsman and fisherman, has created a fundraising team called American Ninja Walleyes. Those who would like to contribute to his fundraising efforts may visit https://give.visioncorps.net/ team/411113.

“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground. Hora is legally blind and has glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president. “I never had a fear of heights, and I was pretty active my entire life. I wanted to do it. It sounded like fun,” Hora recalled. “Megan Tomsheck provided some videos and literature, and the more I saw and read, the more excited I got. It’s our biggest fundraiser.” He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and to find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. “Eleven years ago, it got to the point I was not able to do the work that I was trained TH

In Memoriam

DONALD LEE STOLTZ Donald Lee “Don” Stoltz, 67, of Lebanon, passed unexpectedly at Wellspan Good Samaritan Hospital on May 25, 2022. Born and raised in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Esta (Smith) Stoltz and the loving husband of Carol A. (Shutt) Stoltz. In June, they would have shared 36 years of marriage. Don attended Cornwall-Lebanon School District. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard, serving for 16 years. Don was employed by various construction outlets, worked at Star Silo, was a partner in J&D Plumbing, and worked at Weavers Bologna Factory. He was also a caretaker for Congregation Beth Israel - Lebanon and assisted friends with lawncare before starting his own business, Don’s Lawncare and Handyman Service. For 33 years, he was dedicated to helping his clients. Don took great pride in his work and got satisfaction from a job well done. In his free time, Don and his wife were involved in animal husbandry on their farm, raising cattle, sheep, chickens, rabbits, goats, turkey, pigs, ducks, and geese. They also were avid gardeners and Don liked working on projects around the house and doing maintenance in his shop. An animal lover, Don had many beloved dogs and cats that he enjoyed spending time with. Don also enjoyed watching football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an excellent cook and loved to host picnics and cookouts with friends in the summers and on the weekends. Don was also a member of the R. Field and Stream Association and the Liberty Fire Company. He was never too busy to lend a helping hand to those who needed it and being of service to others brought him joy. His big smile and jolly laugh will be dearly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Stoltz, his siblings: Betty Schriver, Grace Englehart, Curtis Stoltz, Doris Stoltz, Joyce Geissinger, and Ed Brensinger, a host of nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and many friends. Don is preceded in death by his siblings: Dean Stoltz and Nancy Beckey. Friends and family are invited to a time of viewing on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Grose Funeral Home, 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067. During this time, guests will be invited to share memories and stories. Donations in Don’s memory can be directed to the Humane Society of Lebanon County at 150 Ramona Rd., Myerstown, PA 17067 To send an online condolence, please visit www.GroseFH.com IN MEMORIAM For more information: 1-800-428-4211 or classifieds@engleonline.com
