Over the past two decades, the annual Motorsports Show at the LCBC Manheim location has grown to become one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast, said Dean Hershey, men’s ministry and motorsports coordinator at LCBC Church. This year’s show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. “Our first show started with just three grills and around 50 cars,” Hershey noted. “This year’s Motorsports Show will feature over 1,000 antique, classic, muscle cars, tuners, street rods, motorcycles and scale model cars.”
Prizes will be awarded, including 10 custom-made trophies, and the show will also feature food, including doughnuts and ice cream, food provided by Hess’s Barbecue and Bricker’s French Fries and beverages provided by Kreider Farms. Free face painting and inflatables will be available for kids, as well as a radio-controlled car racing track for adults. “This year’s show will celebrate America’s favorite Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, with a designated parking area featuring all generations of Camaros, Firebirds, special models, Z28, Trans Am and other limited editions,” Hershey said. Helping Seniors Live With Dignity BY CATHY MOLITORIS
atthew 25:40 emphasizes the importance of caring for “the least of these,” teaching that everyone deserves compassion. At Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, the least will be getting the most due to a capital campaign designed to continue to provide quality care and support to seniors. “In honor of Mount Hope’s 50th anniversary in June 2019, Mount Hope launched a capital campaign to address a dated facility that needs tender loving care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “We reached our halfway point with total donations and pledges coming in at just over $500,000. We are well on our way to the $1 million goal.” Help is still needed to reach the goal, she stated, which will allow
As the capital campaign continues, the public is invited to a virtual celebration, “Upon This Firm Foundation … Continuing Our Vision,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16. A Zoom link will be available for the celebration at Mount Hope’s website beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the day of the event. Wilson said the celebration will include up-to-date information, personal testimonies of the care Mount Hope provides, an invitation and challenge to participate with a financial response and a vision for the future. “A challenge will be given to those participating in the virtual campaign celebration on how they may see themselves joining with Mt. Hope to ensure that this mission continues strong,” she stated. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to provide quality care for the long-term future.”
What is the value of a red rose? For the members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, it’s priceless. On Dec. 4, 1772, Baron Henry William Stiegel and his wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveyed property to fellow Lutherans to build a church in exchange for an annual rent payment of one red rose. the facility to upgrade its roof and parking lot area; improve public restrooms; update nursing stations and the therapy room; and renovate resident common gathering areas, such as two lounges and the dining hall. So far, 14 resident rooms have been renovated, with 29 still to be updated. Mount Hope has a mission of providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay, Wilson noted, adding that the capital campaign will help the facility continue to fulfill this mission, as much of the facility has not been updated since the home was built in the late 1960s. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to make improvements to continue to provide quality care,” Wilson said. “Every person deserves a dignified, well-maintained place to live. Contributing to the capital campaign will allow the home to continue to provide this care.”

He encouraged participants to also check out a restored Great Expectations II top fuel dragster and its nitro-burning 1,200-horsepower engine. “You will also learn how one rare ’69 Camaro RS Z28 found its way back home to the original owner,” Hershey stated. “Whether you are a Chevy or Pontiac fan or not, you don’t want to miss the show.” The show is open to all vehicles and is free for both entrants and guests. The online registration deadline for vehicles is 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, but inperson registration will also be accepted at the event. Hershey said the show, which is celebrating its 21st year, is an important outreach mission of the church. “The LCBC Motorsports Show is a great way to connect with our community,” he stated, “and it’s a great environment for people looking to take a first step in their lives being changed by Christ.” For more information on the show, visit www.LCBC church.com/motorsports.

originally called the Feast of Roses, became a tradition, and each year on the second Sunday of June, the Lutheran congregation pays the rent of one red rose to a selected Stiegel descendant. This year’s Festival of the Red Rose will be held on Sunday, June 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the church, 2 S. Hazel St. “It’s a nice way to celebrate the legacy of Baron Stiegel and his gift,” said Linda Keiffer, chair of the festival committee. Because the festival could not be held last year due to the pandemic, roses will be presented this year to two Stiegel
heirs. Stephanie Stover Carroll will represent the Henry William Stiegel family for the year 2020. Her sister, Stacy Stover Prince, will accept the red rose payment for the year 2021. The sisters were born and raised in Arlington County, Va. Carroll currently resides in Media, and Prince currently resides in Kensington, Md. Prince graduated from Purdue University and is currently a special education paraeducator with the Montgomery County Public Schools. Both women are ninth-generation descendants of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel. Attorney J.D. Young Jr. from Young & Young Attorneys at Law in Manheim will serve as the legal representative for the presentation of the roses. “We have a rent book that they will sign, and we need to have an attorney present to witness this rental payment because it’s considered a legal transaction,” Keiffer noted. Church members have helped to make tracking down Stiegel heirs easier over the years, she said, including a former pastor who completed extensive genealogy research in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the late Millicent Cooper, who completed genealogy research in the 1990s. The recipients of the roses are presented the flowers in a towel embroidered locally with a red rose and the date and are also given a glass rose created by Stiegel Glassworks. Keiffer said the event is a fun way to commemorate the church’s history while enjoying time for socializing and fellowship. “Anybody is welcome to attend,” she stated. “It’s a really nice program for anyone who is interested in history and particularly the history of Manheim.” For more information about the Festival of the Red Rose, visit www.zionmanheim.com or contact the church office at 717-665-5880.

A Changing Of The Guard At Kraybill BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When MJ Smith retires from her position as principal of Kraybill Mennonite School at the end of this month, she’ll be leaving behind a job that she’s loved, and one that she said has been an honor to have. “It has been really great to have been gifted with the privilege of serving here,” she said. “This school is a community that really supports the students and the teachers. It is a fantastic place. It’s not heaven, but it’s close.” Smith noted that her retirement is bittersweet. “I really enjoy seeing the children come to school in the morning,
greeting them when they come in the door,” she stated. “I love seeing them and their brothers and sisters and their families.” She has also enjoyed having the opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives. “I like helping children to solve their problems,” she remarked. “I like to help them discover how they can find a solution and have success.” Still, she acknowledged that one thing she won’t miss has been the stress of the past year, with the added pressure of the pandemic. “I am also really looking forward to not having to get up at 5:30 in the morning and have a full agenda all day. I have stacks of books to
read, projects around the house,” she said, noting that she is also eager to spend even more time with her grandchildren, who attend Donegal schools. Smith said her departure is made a little easier by knowing she’s leaving the school to a very capable educator. Janice Greenleaf will be taking the reins as the new principal. “I know Janice very well, and I feel extremely confident to have her come on,” Smith stated. Greenleaf, who has spent the past 12 years teaching at Lancaster Mennonite Middle School, is a former Kraybill parent and said that background makes her uniquely suited for her new job. “I have experienced this school both as a parent and as a substitute teacher,” explained Greenleaf, whose three children attended Kraybill. “There are not many places like Kraybill, with its support for everyone and the collaborative community.” She noted that she is most looking forward to helping the

school continue to experience the positive growth that has happened recently, including the addition of a school garden. “I’ve had some experience with experiential learning, and I want to continue that at Kraybill,” she stated. “I believe in learning through different avenues beyond the four walls of the classroom.” Although Greenleaf said she’s excited about her position, she admits that Smith leaves big shoes to fill. “The challenge for me is to make connections and get to know the people here,” she remarked. “MJ has a wealth of knowledge as far as knowing the students and their families and the outside community. That will be one of my main goals, to build that knowledge base.” Smith said although she’s retiring, she’s not going away, and she will be around to support Greenleaf and the school as needed. Still, she said, she doubts her replacement will require much help, adding, “I know the school is in very, very good hands.”

In a game featuring timely hitting and great pitching and defense, Manheim Central rallied for a 2-1 victory in the District Three Class 5A baseball consolation semifinal against South Western last Monday in Manheim. Barons’ ace pitcher Colton Book pitched extremely well. The senior struck out 11 batters and walked none, yielding just four hits in the game. Two of those hits came fifth inning, when the Mustangs produced a run via a single, a stolen base and a sharply hit infield single deep in the hole between short and third. Like the Barons have done all season, they responded to being behind by scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Dylan Yoder and Collin Thompson both walked, and like Manheim (22-2) has done all season, the Barons made the Mustangs pay for yielding free passes. Designated hitter Malakai Zilinski hit a bases clearing triple with a blast into the gap in left-center field. Cather Mason Weaver had Manheim’s only other hit, a single. Manheim was in the district’s consolation bracket, playing for a spot in the state playoffs, after Muhlenburg’s
free-swinging team put the ball in play and pitched well enough to keep Manheim Central off balance in a 13-3 sixth-inning victory over the top-seeded Barons in Manheim on May 27 in the district quarterfinals. Barons’ coach Jason Thompson said Muhlenburg outplayed them in every aspect of the game. “Anything we could do wrong, we did,” Thompson said. “Hopefully, it’s a wake- up call because we’re still playing.” In the third inning, the Barons’ Cam Eberly drew a twoout walk and Brady Harbach singled. Book capitalized with a two-run double to left-center. Manheim got its other run in the fifth when Mason Weaver singled and Drew Mylin was safe on an error on a potential double play. Eberly walked to load the bases and Book hit a sacrifice fly to center field. TRACK Manheim Central sophomore Madison Knier finished tied for 10th and 12th in the high jump and javelin, respectively at the PIAA Class 3A meet at Shippensburg University on May 29. Her teammate, Malea Stoner, a junior, placed 15th in the 300 hurdles. VOLLEYBALL The Barons held off District Two champion Holy Redeemer for a 3-2 victory at Solomon
Plains Jr. High in Wilkes-Barre last Monday night in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs. After taking the first two games 25-17 and a wild one, 29-27, Central lost the next two sets, 24-26 and 21-25, setting up the fifth and final game. The Barons got refocused and pulled away with a 15-9 triumph, putting Manheim in the state quarterfinals. Senior Jeremiah Zimmerman and Blake Wagner had a strong match for Manheim. Zimmerman, a setter, dealt out 37 assists for Central (13-6), while Wagner, an outside hitter, had 22 kills and two blocks.
The Barons, the defending District Three Class 2A champions, lost to Garden Spot Thursday, May 27 in New Holland in the district’s third place contest. The Spartans won 3-0 on game scores of 25-18, 27-25 and 25-22. It was the third time Garden Spot has beaten Manheim this season. The Spartans first victory over the Barons snapped Central’s 40-game LancasterLebanon League Section Two winning streak, which stretched back more than three years. Zimmerman dished out 23 assists and notched two serving aces and Wagner added 15 kills.
