Supporting a friend to all

For the past four years, Eugene Williams has been delivering smiles along with packages as a driver for FedEx - and he’s made an impression on customers along his route throughout Mount Joy and Manheim.

“He is such a happy, engaging person,” said Kathy Anderson, who regularly receives deliveries from Williams. “Eugene treats everyone special and makes us all feel like we’re his favorite customer.”

One day earlier this year, however, Kathy and her husband, Dan, noticed something about Williams. “He didn’t seem like his usual bubbly self, so we asked him if he was OK,” Kathy recalled. “He briefly shared about his situation. He didn’t share a lot of details and wasn’t complaining, but he was clearly feeling burdened. We knew right away that we wanted to help.”

In early June, the Andersons and several of their neighbors, including Kimberly Rudis, surprised Williams with a gift of money; gift cards; a basket of snacks, drinks and treats;

Ruhl’s Church will host summer events

“The picnic has good food, good fellowship and good atmosphere,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the community picnic planning committee at Ruhl’s Church. “People can expect to have lots of fun. Our church picnic grove is

a special place where people can relax and enjoy each other’s company.”

The church will hold its annual community picnic on Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Ruhl’s Church Picnic Grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.

and homemade cards created by neighborhood kids.

Williams, who lives in Elizabethtown, said he was completely surprised by the gifts. He explained that he was going through a particularly hard time.

“I’m a single dad with three kidstwo girls and one boy,” he said of his children. who are ages 14 years, 9 years and 21 months. He’s also the stepfather of two children, ages 17 and 21. “After I got divorced, it really affected my financial situation. I try to hide my problems, but my friend Kathy is so observant, she noticed something was bothering me through my smile.”

Williams proudly displays the handmade cards in his delivery truck and said keeping a positive attitude has always been important to him. “I grew up really rough,” he remarked. “As a kid, I dealt with a lot of racism. In my teenage years, I dealt with a lot of gang stuff, and in my early adult years, I dealt with a lot of drug things. I overcame all of that, so that’s why I try to stay positive because I know I can beat anything if I put my mind to it.”

He said he can’t imagine doing anything other than the job he loves and the route he cherishes. “The people on my route are great,” he stated. “They are so generous, and I’m really grateful.”

Williams is also generous. When he learned that someone along his route is in search of a kidney, he volunteered to donate his. The Andersons helped him submit his paperwork, but it turned out he wasn’t a match.

“Eugene is our friend, and our heart was to just help our friend,” Kathy said of the collection to support Williams. “Life is so busy, and we all have our struggles. But God loves when we get out of our own little worlds and become more aware of the needs of those around us and live to be part of the solution when we can.”

Williams said he hopes others will take inspiration from his story and from his outlook on life. “Try to look on the bright side, no matter what you’re going through,” he shared. “No matter what situation you’re in, look at it with happiness and love.”

A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and hot sausage sandwiches with toppings including grilled onions and peppers. “An assortment of delicious homemade desserts and beverages will also be on the menu,” Ruhl stated. Holding the picnic is a tradition for the church members, and the event helps the church stay connected with the community, Ruhl noted. “Church picnics have been around for a long time and are considered a community social event,” she said. “(It’s) a way for people to gather together, talk and share food. Church picnics are a great place to see old friends and make new friends.”

Car show and tour will spotlight antique cars

He may be only 23 years old, but Nick Sieber is an oldfashioned guy. He’s really into antique cars, and he owns several, including a 1930 Ford Model A, a 1928 Buick and a 1940 Buick.

Now he’s inviting other people to share his passion for the vehicles. He’s organizing the Stone Gables Prewar Car Show and Tour. The event will be held on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“There are so many car shows that focus on cars from the 1950s or 1960s,” Sieber noted. “For folks who have pre-World War II or pre-World War I cars, there are not a lot of opportunities. I wanted to give people a chance to take their car out and enjoy it as it should be.”

Unlike other car shows, Sieber’s event is a tour, meaning participants will be able to drive their vehicles through the roads on the property’s 275 acres, offering rides to attendees.

“People from the general public can come out for the day, ride the 1860s steam locomotive on the estate’s private railroad, enjoy some lunch, tour the Star Barn and just enjoy the grounds,” Sieber stated.

The car show and tour will highlight cars built in 1942 and earlier, and Sieber said he’s been pleasantly surprised by the response he’s gotten from participants. People are driving their antique cars

from Maryland, New York and New Hampshire, among other places, and one of the cars dates to 1910.

This past year, Sieber drove his 1930 Model A to a car show in Michigan, where he networked with other car enthusiasts who are helping to spread the word about his Elizabethtown event.

Sieber noted that he’s always been into old cars, starting when he was a young boy. “My maternal grandmother was born in 1923, and growing up, every Sunday after church, we’d go back to her house, enjoy dinner and sit and talk,” he recalled. “She would always reminisce about stories of growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. Her brothers had these old jalopiesModel Ts and Model As - and she remembered riding in the rumble seat. She talked so fondly of her childhood, I fell in love with it.”

At 16, Sieber bought his first car, a 1925 Ford Model T. “That started what you could say would be a slight obsession,” he said with a laugh.

He invites anyone with an interest in antique cars to come out to the car show and tour, noting that it will be a unique event.

“The big draw for this is that it’s a driving show,” he stated. “You’ll get to see and hear the cars running, and you might even be able to take a ride in one.”

Diana Roth, area representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was thrilled to hear the response from a parent whose child was attending the New Holland Power Camp when Roth asked if her child was enjoying the experience.

“I asked a parent today if her child had fun,” said Roth. “And she said, ‘Yes.’ She said her child’s only complaint was that this is the last day. I like to hear that.”

The New Holland camp, which was held from June 19 through 22, is one of three held in the county this summer. The Lancaster camp, which attracted about 50 students from Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church from June 12 through 15. The Manheim camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church from Monday, July 10, through Thursday, July 13. Students ages 8 to 12 who would like to take part in that camp may sign up at www.lancasterfca.org/ manheim-power-camp.

Lancaster Creative Factory will offer six-week Hand Building Pottery Classes on from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays or Saturdays and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays or Saturdays. The first class will begin on Monday, July 17, and sessions will continue into the fall. crazy day. The overall theme of this year’s camps is “Greater,” based on John 3:30. Each day begins with worship featuring the worship band from the host church and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The worship team and speaker set the tone f or the day,” said Roth. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport.

Roth said that the volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school coaches, and many serve for multiple weeks. At New Holland, students could choose to participate in basketball, football, field hockey, soccer, or lacrosse. Because the New Holland camp attracted nearly 150 students, half ate lunch while the other half met with their huddle leaders for Bible study. Both

high school and middle school students serve as junior huddle leaders.

“A huddle is five to seven students and a leader,” said Roth. “Huddle leaders are with campers leading, guiding, encouraging, all through camp.” Fifteen coaches and 51 huddle leaders took part in the New Holland camp. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, snack, and closing assembly.

“It is a faith-based camp,” noted Roth. “The whole reason we do camp is to share the Gospel.” With that goal in mind, boy campers compete against girl campers to raise funds to hold similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar.

“Our goal is to raise $7,000 from all (three Lancaster County) camps combined,” said Roth.

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas

and grid-tied electricity.

Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

The following local Penn-

Trinity

sylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and York Fresh Food Farms.

All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention, reduction and recovery, and

HARTZ Physical Therapy

(PT) recently presented a check for $9,500 to Off the Streets, a nonprofit organization that has been active in helping homeless people in Lancaster County for more than 10 years. The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s second annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament, which was held on May 12 at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

The Spring Swing Golf Tournament was organized by HARTZ PT therapists and avid golfers Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro.

Referrals from Off the Street’s community partners

have increased significantly this year, as have the funds needed to assist with security deposits. All proceeds from the Spring Swing will be used for this purpose

Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To date, the company has raised more than $300,000 by planning various charitable events, including the annual Fall Blast 5K Run/Walk and Feed the Need, an April food drive to benefit Power Packs Project.
