The Hunt Is On In Manheim BY CATHY MOLITORIS

There’s a pig perfect for posing with in Manheim. Do you know where it is? It’s one of the stops on the Manheim PA Community Scavenger Hunt, created by Manheim Community Cares. The scavenger hunt kicked off last month and will run through December. To get started, just download the GooseChase app on

Members of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee and advisory board lay flowers at Veterans Memorial Park, where the group plans to construct a plaza.

he Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee (MVMC) has a motto that sums up its mission: Honor Their Service. To fulfill this goal, the group recently launched a capital campaign to raise funds for the creation of a memorial plaza in Manheim’s Veterans Memorial Park. “This is something we want to do for all Manheim veterans, whether they served in war or in peace,” said retired Army Brig. Gen. George Schwartz, a member of the committee. “There is a long list of people in Manheim who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but everyone who serves sacrifices something. We want to honor everyone.” The memorial will be dedicated to residents of Manheim Borough and Penn and Rapho townships. It will include flagpoles for the standards of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard as well as the Merchant Marines of World War II. The plaza will also consolidate the various memorials already in place around town to provide one access point for honoring veterans.

“Consolidating the memorials will give them more meaning,” Schwartz said. “People might walk by some of the memorials and never really notice them. Some have actually been in storage because they were moved due to development, so it will be nice to be able to have a dedicated place to put them all.”

“This is something we want to do for all Manheim veterans, whether they served in war or in peace.” Members of the MVMC had planned to conduct their capital campaign in 2020, but the pandemic put it off a year. The group, made up of volunteers, hopes to raise $300,000 through donations, inkind gifts, special events and the sale of memorial bricks for the plaza.

“Parts of the plaza are going to be paved by bricks, and they will be engraved,” Schwartz noted. “Bricks can honor any veteran, not just someone from Manheim. It’s a great way to get involved in our effort and to recognize a veteran.” He said the committee is working on plans for people to adopt a veteran from World War II and purchase a brick in his or her honor. The MVMC is being assisted by an advisory board made up of local residents including Penn Township manager Mark Hiester, former Manheim Central School superintendent Lew Jury and Manheim Borough Council president Carol Phillips. The capital campaign will run through Veterans Day, and the committee has set a goal for the groundbreaking of the plaza to coincide with the Manheim Memorial Day parade in 2022. your smartphone and search for “Manheim PA Community Scavenger Hunt.” Paper copies of the hunt are also available at Sloan’s Pharmacy, 73 S. Main St.; Divine Swine, 2684 Lebanon Road; and state Rep. Mindy Fee’s office, 47 Market Square. The scavenger hunt provides something fun for people to do while exploring the Manheim area, said Nancy Hanula of Manheim Community Cares. Founded in 2018, Manheim Community Cares is composed of community leaders and concerned citizens who work to identify and address needs in the community. “At Manheim Community Cares, one of the things we do is analyze data to see what the needs are,” she noted, adding that data showed a lack of prosocial activities beyond school for youths in the community. “But the scavenger hunt isn’t just for youths. It’s for adults, too. We’re hoping that everybody young and old comes out and participates.”

The scavenger hunt is funded by a grant Manheim Community Cares received from Compass Mark. Stops on the hunt might include anything from posing for a picture with the aforementioned pig to playing leapfrog in a park or taking a walk on a trail in a local park and saying a kind word to anyone you pass, Hanula said. Some stops will feature small giveaways from the site or the opportunity to collect a wooden token, while others are just for fun. “It’s not just about getting something at every stop,” Hanula remarked. “It’s also about having the opportunity to maybe make someone’s day by saying a kind word.” Participants can track points for each stop they complete and enter a drawing for prizes, she noted. Currently, the hunt features close to 20 stops, but more may be added throughout the year.

The scavenger hunt also fulfills a unique need in the community after a particularly difficult year, Hanula stated. “People are feeling sad, depressed and isolated,” she said. “Having the opportunity to give back and to meet other people can help people feel more connected to their community. People who feel more connected to their community become more engaged in their community.” She encourages anyone to check out the scavenger hunt, which encompasses stops throughout the Manheim Central School District. “It’s just a fun way to get out and get to know the community,” she commented. “You might find a walking trail you never knew was there or go to a local business you haven’t visited before.” For more information about Manheim Community Cares, visit https://manheim communitycares.org.

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. VFW Baseball Tournaments Held The Manheim VFW Baseball program tournaments recently returned after a year off due to COVID. As in years past, the six tournaments over three weekends wrapped up on Father’s Day, June 20. The tournaments were held at Creek Field, Pool Field and Island Field, culminating in championship games at Pool Field. A total of 43 teams of children ages 8 to 12 participated in the tournaments, with players traveling from Lancaster, York, Berks, Juni-

ata and Lebanon counties. One of the elements of each event, a tradition which started five years ago, was an opening ceremony that includes a ceremonial first pitch by an honored guest. On June 4, the 8U/10U2 tournament was held, and it began with Mike Naff throwing out the ceremonial first pitch to his son, Hudson. Not only does Mike help coach one of the two Manheim 10U2 teams, but he also served in the Pennsylvania

Mike had two deployments to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Currently, he is employed in Lancaster County as a police officer. The following weekend, Sgt. Ryan Goss of the Manheim Police Department was joined on the field by fellow Manheim Officer John Hoffner to throw out the first pitch. Hoffner served aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 2005 to 2009. Goss is a Manheim Central High School graduate who served in the Army National Guard from 2014 to 2016. He served with Company B 1st Battalion, Infantry Regiment 56 and the Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He received the Army Achievement Medal for training conducted with Lithuania soldiers. The final baseball tournament was held on Father’s

Day weekend for the 12U1/12U2 age group and honored the late William “Bill” Travitz. This tournament has been occurring on an annual basis for over 50 years, and in the late 1990s, it was named in memory of Travitz, who was a loyal supporter of Manheim Baseball. He served as a role model, coach, and teacher to those involved in the Manheim VFW Baseball program. The tournament commemorates his dedication, his example and his love of the sport. Each year, this tournament honors someone who had a close relationship with Bill. This year, his widow, Barb Travitz-Steffy, threw the first pitch. Due to a recent accident, Travitz-Steffy was pushed onto the field in a wheelchair by her grandson, Chase Travitz, who plays for

While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer

their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. “People

can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next

Miller will attend Penn State Mont Alto campus in the fall and plans to become a physical therapist assistant. “She stood out to us because of her academic and athletic achievements, both on the school soccer team and on a community league soccer team, as well as her volunteer work in the community,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. At school, Miller was a co-adviser of the Interact Service Club and a member of the book club, the Spanish Club, the pingpong club and Student Council. She

volunteers at the Water Street Mission and at her church, Salem United Methodist Church, where she serves and prepares meals and works in the church library. She also helped to organize and run the Elementary School Festival. Wagner is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. “She stood out to us because during her high school career she dual enrolled in the college in the high school program, allowing her to complete six college credits,” Shenk stated. “Additionally, her application indicated that she has already taken steps to pursue her chosen degree by arranging shadow experiences at Penn Medicine/Lancaster General

Local Author Releases Book, Sets Signing “Behind Fences: A Prison Chaplain’s Story,” a 284-page book with its roots in Lancaster County, was released in early June by author Esther Zeiset, who resides near Newmanstown. The book is about Esther’s husband, Nelson, and his 33-year career in prison chaplaincy. The Zeisets will hold a book signing event on Friday, July 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tin Roof Cafe n’ Sweets, 108 N. Reading Road, Ephrata. Nelson sensed a call to prison ministry as a 12-year-old Mennonite boy. From that day in 1973, he ordered his life to fulfill the purpose of taking the Gospel message of hope and redemption to prisons. Readers of Esther’s book will learn of God’s faithfulness through the 1980s AIDS epidemic, the Camp Hill prison riot, lawsuits and an inmate’s calculated scheme against Nelson, and of a prison church’s growth and crumbling racial walls. “Behind Fences” urges the reader to discover and pursue his or her own life calling and to view God’s faithfulness on that journey. The author interspersed her own perspectives as the Zeisets’ family life intersected with Nelson’s ministry. She has published inspirational articles, devotions, and fiction in The Secret Place, The Upper Room, Power for Living, War Cry and varied local publications. “Behind Fences” is available through Masthof Press, on Amazon and at local retailers.
