Sertoma Club offers devices to aid hearing-impaired people

Listening to a presentation from Roger Spitz of the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club a few months ago, Manheim Sertoma Club member Wendy Wood was inspired to act.

Spitz demonstrated the HLAC151 Bedside Fire Alarm and Clock bed shaker, created by Lifetone Technology to wake a person who might sleep through a fire.

Playing to serve

In 1953, when she was 18 years old, June Smith began serving as assistant organist at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Manheim. She transitioned to full-time organist in 1972, and she’s been serving the church ever since.

St. Paul’s will recognize June’s 70 years of service with a celebration following the 9:30 a.m. worship on Sunday, July 23.

June, now 88, has been a member of St. Paul’s since she was 5 years old, just about the time she began taking piano lessons. As a teenager, she took organ lessons from the church’s organist, and when the organist moved away, Smith stepped in as her replacement.

“It’s my way of serving. When I started playing, and the church started to pay us, I was being paid $2 a week,” she recalled, noting that she bought her own music and that it cost her $5 a week to continue organ lessons, which she was taking with

an instructor in Lancaster. “It was never about the money. I was just so thankful I had the opportunity to play and serve in this way.”

Since November, June has been a resident of Pleasant View Communities, where she has a room in assisted living. She still drives, and she has no plans to retire from serving as organist, noting, “I’m going to keep playing as long as I am able and competent.”

A mother of three, June was married to Clark Smith for almost 60 years before he passed away seven years ago. She also has three grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, with another greatgrandchild on the way.

Over the years, she estimates she’s played the organ at more than 150 weddings and another 150 funerals, including the services for her mother, sister, brother and husband. “Some people asked me, ‘How could you play for your husband?’” June remarked. “It was the last thing he asked me, and I told

him, ‘If I can play for your service, I will.’ It was the last thing I could do for him.”

June has filled in as organist for different churches in the Manheim area and has played at several graduation ceremonies at Manheim Central High School. She directed the children’s choirs at St. Paul’s for 20 years, with each of her children serving as her accompanist over the years.

At Pleasant View, she serves as organist once a month during the in-house church services. She also has a list of 45 cantatas she’s accompanied over the years throughout Lancaster County.

When June found out the church wanted to honor her seven decades of service, she was hesitant. “I asked them not to,” she stated with a laugh. “I’m a little embarrassed about it. I’m not playing for recognition. I just want to serve. Then the pastor sat me down and said, ‘June, we just want to say thank you,’ so I said, ‘OK.’”

“I got goosebumps listening to his presentation,” Wood recalled, noting that her 75-year-old father had recently slept through an alarm that went off at his house. “He wears hearing aids, and people don’t sleep with

their hearing aids, so you might not realize who would miss an alarm because they couldn’t hear it,” she said. Her father was unhurt, but the See Sertoma pg 2

a swing against poverty

More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.

Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big

deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.

HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such See

last.

“When I joined the Sertoma Club, I knew I wanted to do something for the community,” said Wood, who joined Sertoma a little over a year ago. She created the Shake Me Awake campaign, in cooperation with the Carlisle club’s Feel the Danger campaign, to raise funds to purchase the devices. The alarms connect to a resident’s current fire alarm and provide multiple notifications of a fire - from audible alerts to visual notifications of flashing lights to tactile alerts of a vibrating bed shaker.

“You don’t realize that there is a need like this in the community, but there is a need,” Wood said, noting that she has reached out to local VFWs to spread the word about the devices for veterans. “There are elderly people who live alone and who could benefit from this. There are parents who have hearing-impaired children who would benefit from this.”

Wood said she’s been overwhelmed by the community support to raise funds for the devices. “I want to thank everybody who sponsored this effort, who welcomed me into their business during business hours and took time to sit down and listen to what we do as a club and what we are doing with this project,” she stated. “Thank you to everybody who donated to make this possible.”

“For two months straight, I went around to businesses and people in Manheim and Lititz, raising money to purchase these devices, which cost $250 a piece,” Wood said. “I thought, ‘If I can raise $5,000, I’ll be ecstatic.’” To date, she’s raised more than $11,000.

“People have been very supportive of this cause,” she stated. “Lititz Mutual was my best sponsor. They gifted $2,500, which would purchase 10 devices for the hearing-impaired.”

Rissers Mennonite Church will hold community picnic

“We encourage people to come out for food, fun and fellowship,” said Miranda Heistand, committee member and wife of pastor Daryl Heistand, describing Rissers Mennonite Church’s annual community picnic. “There is something for all ages to do.”

The picnic will be held on Saturday, July 29, beginning at 4 p.m. at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown.

Highlights of the event will include a 16-foot water slide for both children and

adults to enjoy, as well as lawn games, including cornhole and ladder golf. Young children can ride a barrel train and play in kiddie pools.

A meal, including pork barbecue sandwiches, sides and ice cream, will be offered as well.

The event will conclude with a showing of the movie “5000 Blankets” inside the church, beginning at 8 p.m. Inspired by a true story, the film follows a woman and her young son on their quest to find the woman’s husband, who has experienced a

mental health crisis and is living on the streets. Their journey sparks a movement of compassion toward people in need and inspires a city.

Picnic attendees should bring lawn chairs and towels or a change of clothes to dry off before the meal and movie.

The picnic offers an opportunity for the congregation to connect with the community, and it is open to everyone, whether they’ve attended before or are coming for the first time. This year’s event will have a relaxed feel,

PHEAA to host free webinars

Enjoy food and fellowship at the Rissers Mennonite Church picnic. A giant waterslide will be a highlight of Rissers Mennonite Church’s picnic.

Gretna Music will present a concert by jazz bass legend Buster Williams on Saturday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. The next day, Sunday, July 30, kora player Sona Jobarteh will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

Williams has played, recorded and collaborated with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, and Count Basie. This concert is presented in partnership with Central PA Friends of Jazz.

Jobarteh is known as the first professional female

kora virtuoso to come from any of the West African Griot dynasties. The kora is a West African 21-stringed instrument with a sound resembling that of a harp, although when played in the traditional style, the kora bears resemblance to a guitar. Kora players have traditionally come from families of historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass on their skills to their descendants.

To purchase tickets, call 717-361-1508 or visit www.gretnamusic.org.

In addition, Gretna Music will host First Listen miniconcerts. These performances feature local youths and occur before the main-

stage concerts, offering the opportunity for students to perform on stage and to interact with the professional musicians backstage. First Listen concerts are free and open to the public.

Performances will take place in the Mount Gretna Playhouse. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the young artists will perform at 6:45 p.m.

Pianist Christian Wienckoski will be featured before the Chanticleer concert on Sunday, July 23. Wienckoski is a classically trained pianist who has been playing and performing since the age of 6. At age 15, he started teaching his own piano students. He now studies with

his uncle, Brian Farrell, who is a graduate of the Juilliard School.

Clarinetist Andre Hurst will perform before Jobarteh on July 30. Hurst is a rising senior at Hempfield High School, where he plays varsity tennis and is a member of the school’s symphonic band. He has been playing the clarinet for eight years and has been accepted to All-State and All-East ensembles. He also enjoys playing in Nextgen’s Allegretto Youth Orchestra. After high school, he plans to pursue a career in STEM. For more information, call the aforementioned number or visit the previously mentioned website.

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) honored 59 homeschool seniors during its 28th annual graduation ceremony on May 26.

The ceremony was held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church and included music performances by members of the senior class, a commencement speech from the keynote speaker, a video collage of the graduates, graduation speeches from two senior students and the awarding of diplomas by parents.

The keynote address was given by John Blowers, an executive and leader in the small business, nonprofit and local government sectors for more than 30 years. Blowers is currently a member of the leadership team at Martin Flooring Inc. in Fivepointville and serves on the board of directors for Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority.

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac.

Harris contacted the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHis-

tory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization.

Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez

installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked for the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is current-

ly in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installa-

tion, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more peo-

ple to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

A fishing derby organized by the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DTU) in collaboration with the Lancaster Special Olympics took place on June 17. The event was hosted at Hugh Wenger’s residence in Elizabethtown and planned by lead organizers Wenger; Claire Landis, president of DTU; and Tony Watts, a member of the Special Olympics leadership team.

A total of 10 athletes, accompanied by their guests, participated in the derby, receiving assistance from 29 DTU volunteers. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (F&BC) provided fishing rods, while Kinsey’s Outdoors supplied the bait.

To facilitate the smooth

movement of supplies and assist guests, Messick’s Equipment offered a utility transport vehicle. Andy Desko,

aquatic resource program specialist from the Pennsylvania F&BC, acquired a special fishing event permit and provided guidance for the event.

The derby began a 9 a.m. in the well-stocked pond, showcasing the contestants’ angling skills. The contestants successfully caught a variety of species, including catfish, bluegills and smallmouth bass. By noon, the Olympians had collectively reeled in more than 140 fish, with Caroline Whitson leading the pack by catching 25 fish. The attendees also had the opportunity to observe the red-winged blackbirds, listen to the croaking bullfrogs and catch glimpses of turtles surfacing from the water.

At noon, DTU member Stan Shenk and his crew served lunch to all the participants. The meal was accompanied by snacks provided by Utz and Pepperidge Farm.

Christmas in July Bazaar planned

Lancaster Moravian Church, 227 N. Queen St., second floor, will host its second Christmas in July Bazaar on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include Moravian sugar cakes, cookies, and other baked goods; Moravian stars; crafts for gifting; vendors; Grab ‘n Go lunches; a silent auction; and a summer visit from Santa.

A charity giveaway drawing will take place at noon. This year, all proceeds from the sale of the giveaway drawing tickets will go to The Potter’s House, a local

Christian residential program to help people recover from addiction, find employment and housing, and start renewed lives. Those who buy a pack of three tickets for a discount will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to American Music Theatre or Sight & Sound Theatre. Tickets will be available in advance from church members or at the bazaar until the time of the drawing.

For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-9722 or office@ lancastermoravian.org.

Master Watershed Stewards to host webinar

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale this August. Prior to the sale, the program will host a free webinar on Wednesday, July 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to help Pennsylvania residents learn more about the tree sale fundraiser and the species included this year.

During the webinar, Penn State Master Watershed Stewards and Penn State Master Gardeners will review the plants that will be available in the sale, discuss selecting plants for specific properties and conditions, and provide order and pickup information for the sale. In advance of the webinar, registrants will have an opportunity to submit questions about choosing the right tree or shrub for their property. Planting native trees and shrubs can help to turn a landscape into a wildlife wonderland

goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at www.hopeinternational.org/ golf by Friday, Sept. 1.

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.

Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the

community,” she noted. Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”
