ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, with participants rolling out between 7 and 8:30 a.m. A 2-mile fun walk will begin at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the tour will benefit cancer research.

Cadet Camp introduces youths to emergency services

Witha goal of inspiring young people to consider a career or volunteer position in public emergency services, Cadet Camp was held in June. Lancaster County first responder agencies collaborated to provide hands-on learning and fun for children ages 8 to 14.Run by the Lafayette Fire Company, camps were held on June 23 at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in Manheim and on June 24 at Lafayette Fire Company in Lancaster.

“My goal was to highlight some different aspects of the emergency service world, to maybe inspire some interest in the cadets to go into the field of emergency services,” explained Kim Herskowitz, camp coordinator. “I wanted to showcase some of the different jobs or positions that are available and show that many different talents and interests can be beneficial to the big picture.”

She noted that the camp highlighted the various ways people can serve their community. “Some kids may want to be front-line, hands-on firefighters,” she said. “Some may prefer the EMS end of things or law enforcement. Some may have more of an interest in the math and science end of things and want to be a part of the Hazmat team. Some may want

through a building,” she stated. “They learned about truck work and ventilation as they watched a crew perform a cut on the roof prop. They watched a crew demonstrate forcible entry tools to gain access to a building and got to practice using some of the tools on locks and doors.”

Campers also learned about search techniques by navigating their way through a dark, smoke-filled maze and heard about careers in law enforcement from the East Lampeter Township Police and Pennsylvania State Police.

to be in leadership and are great at critical thinking in high-stress situations.”

Herskowitz noted that the campers had to rely on each other as a team to complete challenges at five stations. “The cadets learned how to work as a team to navigate a heavy hose line up some stairs and

Teams also competed against each other to earn points, focusing on skills of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking, Herskowitz noted. Campers worked together to earn puzzle pieces, and once the puzzle was completed, each camper received a ticket to a baseball game, courtesy of the Lancaster Barnstormers.

“National Night Out enhances relationships between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community,” said Joe Stauffer, chief of the Manheim Borough Police Department. “On a personal note, I have always been a huge advocate of finding ways to unite our community with our police officers and first responders. Most of us, myself included, live and raise our children within the Lancaster County community.”

Manheim will hold National

Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Manheim Hope Fire Department, 83 S. Main St.

The evening will feature lots of family-friendly fun, Stauffer said. “We have approximately 10 food trucks, face painting, cornhole with police, numerous community service groups and other local businesses,” he remarked. “There will be displays from first responders, including police, fire and EMS from the Manheim area.”

Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to bring

countryside that highlight the beauty of the area, the history of farming and the tradition of chocolate that the area is well known for,” said Will Stone, Chocolate Tour committee member. “The longer routes inevitably take the cyclists through covered

bridges. All routes have full support, including rest stops and mechanical support.”

The fun walk is dog-friendly and will take participants through the covered bridge at the Farm Show complex and along the Chiques Creek trail, explained Cheryl Gamber,

frompg 1 Chocolate Tour committee member. She noted that chocolate treats will be offered along the trail, and ice cream will be provided for all at the end of the route, including pup cups for canine participants.

“The Chocolate Tour is a family-friendly event,” Gamber said. “Cycling and walk participants are treated to lunch, hydrating beverages, Kreider’s ice cream, a (giveaway drawing) and, of course, lots of chocolate,” she stated.

Throughout its 13-year history, the Chocolate Tour has provided seed money for initial research projects that have led to larger cancer research grant awards for the Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute, she shared. “Currently, $2 million in cancer research grants are active at the College of Medicine as a result of Chocolate Tour funds,” Gamber said.

Some of the bike rides are dedicated to cyclists who have passed away from cancer in the past year, she remarked, noting that the 100-mile ride is dedicated to Jim Wilson of Hummelstown, while the 50mile ride is dedicated to Rich Snively of Lititz. The 35-mile ride is dedicated to Glenn Curtis of Bernville, and the 25-mile ride is dedicated to Bernhard Robertson of Johns

Eight Lancaster County law enforcement officers who made a combined 143 impaired driving arrests in the calendar year 2022 were honored as “Lancaster County DUI Top Guns” on June 20 at the 31st annual DUI Awareness Conference held at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in Manheim.

Office of the District Attorney of Lancaster County.

Officers from the following departments were award recipients: East Cocalico Township Police Department, East Lampeter Township Police Department, Lititz Borough Police Department, Lancaster City Bureau of Police, Manor Township Police Department and Northwest Lancaster County Regional Police Department.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) units from southcentral Pennsylvania participated in a search-and-rescue exercise at Blue Marsh National Recreation Area in Leesport on May 13.

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of Lititz, Reading Composite Squadron 811, and Lebanon Composite Squadron 307 came together to train in emergency services in order to practice search-and-rescue activities for downed aircraft and missing persons. The exercise, also known as SAREX, included CAP support aircraft from Capital City Airport. Cadets and senior members from each of the squadrons worked together in teams to complete tasks to locate and identify clues in a real-life simulation of a downed aircraft with a missing person who parachuted from an airplane prior to the plane’s crashing. Teams had to utilize orienteering skills while traversing natural terrain, implement search techniques, perform mission radio communication protocols, and extract the missing person using what they have learned through their CAP training.

Search-and-rescue exercises allow cadets and seniors to identify any areas in which they need improvement in order to effectively and efficiently perform mission objectives in the event that they are called to serve the community or nation during national emergences, natural disasters, downed aircraft scenarios, or missing person searches.

This training is one of many activities that members of the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 perform to be prepared to

serve their community. Service to one’s community, state, and nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within the CAP.

This activity was primarily organized by the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 commander, Maj. Jerome Broad, who has many years of emergency service mission experience.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is

located on the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome.

The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary. For more information, visit www.GoCivilAir Patrol.com or www.CAP .news. Details about the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 are available at www.Jesse Jones.cap.gov and by searching for “Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304” on Facebook.

With a healthy dose of empathy, we can turn indebtedness into appreciation.

Located at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, across the parking lot from the entrance to the Lititz Public Library, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County recognizes all the servicemen and women from Lancaster County whose dedication and commitment helped provide all the freedom-related privileges we enjoy every day.

Students to present “Mean Girls”

Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, in partnership with the Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS), will present the regional premiere of “Mean Girls: High School Version.” Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Gardner Theatre at LCDS, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

Adapted from Tina Fey’s 2004 film, “Mean Girls” focuses on high school student Cady Heron. Cady may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. To rise to the top of the popularity pecking order, Cady must take on The Plastics, a trio of

frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. When Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign, Cady learns the hard way that you cannot cross a queen bee without getting stung. “Mean Girls” was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

The show is directed by Michael Popovsky. The creative team also includes Meg Schmidt, Christine Healy, Steffan Bomberger, Greg Woodbridge, Casey Potvin, Cody Allyn Page, Clayton Dombach, Andy Green, Elaina Mayer, Christyn Rutter, and Hong Tran-Speros.

The cast consists entirely of students age 18 and under from Lancaster County and the surrounding area. Carly Evans stars as Cady Heron, and the other cast

Teepa Snow to return to Lancaster

Melody Karick, memory care educator and consultant with Garden Spot Village, is well-acquainted with internationally known dementia expert Teepa Snow. “I was blessed to be mentored by Teepa,” said Karick. “She does a great job of explaining (concepts and techniques). No matter what level of awareness you are at, she is easy to understand.”

Snow will return to Lancaster for a second set of seminars after first offering a well-attended program in 2022. Sessions will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The morning session will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

The morning session is designed for first responders, business organizations churches, and families. Snow will focus on discerning signs of dementia and providing safe and comfortable spaces. The afternoon session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.

LEWIS SLACK

Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed a trademarked model f or understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.

“One of the things she really stresses is the positive approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained. “Are

“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with dementia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,” she said.

For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not.

There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendly lancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

Lewis Slack, 83 years of age, entered his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 11th, surrounded by his Family in Denver, PA, formerly of Manheim, PA. He was born on November 8, 1939 in Whitesville, NY.

Lew was blessed with 10 grandchilchen and 16 great grandchildren. Lew was a master Carpenter by trade. When not working, he enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his wife and family. Lew will be remembered as a soft spoken, kind hearted gentleman who loved Jesus with all his heart. He will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, July 15, at 10:30 A.M. at the Eckenroth Home for Funerals, 209 E. Main St., Terre Hill, PAwith Pastor John Zeswitz officiating. based on the price these people paid under less-than-ideal circumstances.”

Architecturally unique, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County is a somber place, an unassuming space. An Abraham Lincoln quote - “Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause” - greets visitors to a park that recognizes contributions made by local personnel from every branch of the United States militaryArmy, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guardpast, present and future.

“W e’d like more people to know about it,” said Warwick Township manager Brian Harris. “We do our best to promote it, and anybody who visits the library can see it. But I’m sure there are those who don’t know this area exists.”

“It’s just a simple place

where you can go and reflect,” said Kreider. “At times, we’ll have families of people who have served come to us and say, ‘Hey, can you fly this flag?’ It means a lot to them.”

Perhaps the highlight of Veterans Honor Park is the 412 individualized legacy bricks that have been laid to commemorate the service of Lancaster County veterans. The money raised from the sale of the bricks was initially used to fund the memorial, while future sales will go toward continued maintenance of the park.

“ We want people to know the park exists and that it’s a countywide attraction,” said Harris. “It’s a place where anyone from Lancaster County can come to honor someone in their family who served.”

Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County was built on 0.2 acres of Warwick Township land in 2019. Many local communities maintain their own military memorials, but Veterans Honor Park is one of the few that recognizes the service of thousands of citizens from across the county.

“It was (Warwick Township board of supervisors member) Dave Kramer’s idea,” said Kreider. “The county had this idea, ‘ We should have a Lancaster County veterans park.’ And Dave said, ‘Why not here?’ It’s a credit to Mr. Kramer because he helped move it forward.”

The agroforestry practice forest farming is the production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in forests to provide edible and medicinal crops for personal use and income.

Topics on Aug. 31 will include the uses, trade and cultural importance of American ginseng; its identification, biology, and ecology; its side effects; wild population stewardship and forest farming approaches; and research updates and educational opportunities.

The program is free, but Society of American Foresters credits are available for a fee.

Registration is required by visiting https://extension .psu.edu and searching for “Forest Farming Series: American Ginseng.”
