Justover a year ago, Wendy Wood joined the Manheim Sertoma Club with a mission.

“I knew I wanted to create some sort of fundraiser to help raise money for the group,” she said. She is organizing a Classic Car Show, Cider Fest and Chicken Barbecue to benefit the club on Sunday, Sept. 10. It will be held at the Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, 3133 Pinch Road, Manheim. Registration will run from 8 to 11 a.m., and the car show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chicken barbecue dinners must be preordered by Sunday, Aug. 27, and may be purchased from a Sertoma member or on the car show registration form. Dinners will include a quarter-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter and a drink. The chicken barbecue will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Manheim Sertoma Club will also sell cheeseburgers and french fries during the show. More than 20 awards will be

presented for the cars, sponsored by local businesses. Awards will include People’s Choice, Participants’ Choice and Manheim Sertoma Choice. Door prizes and giveaway

“People can get together and enjoy seeing all the cars, listen to music, have a chicken barbecue and just spend the day having fun.”

drawings will be offered all day, and music will be provided by DPH Productions. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Manheim Central Food Pantry.

Wendy and her husband, Tony, are car enthusiasts. “I love classic cars,” she said, noting that the couple owns five classic vehicles.

Among their cars are a 1994 Suzuki Cappuccino, a 1970 Plymouth Cuda and a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle.

The car show is open to any type of vehicle, and Wendy encourages

people to come out for a day of fun. “They can expect a nice community gathering, where people can get together and enjoy seeing all the cars, listen to music, have a chicken barbecue and just spend the day having fun,” she said.

With a motto of “Service to Mankind,” the Manheim Sertoma Club supports needs throughout the community. A major focus is on providing services to people who are hearing-impaired, and the club recently launched its “Shake Me Awake” program to provide devices that will wake people who might not hear a traditional fire alarm. The club is partnering with the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club on the project, and Roger Spitz of the Carlisle club will be on-site at the car show to demonstrate the device.

For more information on the car show, contact Wendy Wood at 717-824-2658. For more information on the Manheim Sertoma Club, search for the organization on Facebook.

Go shopping on Friday, Aug. 11, and you can help support local students.

The Manheim Central Middle School (MCMS) Community Yard Sale will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the school, 261 White Oak Road, Manheim. Proceeds from the event will be used for the middle school activities

fund to provide events and experiences for students.

The idea for the yard sale came about from Matthew Baker, an instructional coach at the school, who suggested the yard sale would be a successful fundraiser.

“With the help of Michelle Martin, our dean of students and Student Council adviser, we were able to make this idea a reality,” said Krystle Nemeth, principal of Manheim

Niki Mastros Breitigan-Lannigan believes in spreading joy however she can, especially to the people who need it most. As the owner of Photini Skincare & Beauty at Genesis Asthetics in Manheim, she offers complimentary oncology facials for people who are battling cancer and for their caregivers, and she offers free 3D cosmetic tattoos for breast cancer survivors. She also hands out beanies at infusion centers and takes gift bags to people who are newly diagnosed and homebound from the effects of treatment.

Her heart for others and her belief that everyone deserves to feel special helped her win the title of Elite Ms. Mid-Atlantic Petite earlier this summer. She now represents New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for Petite USA, a pageant for women who are 5 feet 6 inches or less, and she’ll compete for Elite Ms. Petite National later this month.

Her platform is Nancy Lee’s Bows and Beanies, named in honor of her mother, who passed away in March after being diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.

A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis

envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which

serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon

which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built. When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

patient. “And I know what it’s like being a caregiver and watching my mother and best friend suffer,” she said. “I hate this disease and will help people for the rest of my life.”

When she learned that her fellow esthetician and friend Jodi McCollough of Manheim had a reoccurrence of breast cancer, Niki took action. She’s planning a fundraising event to benefit McCollough. It will be held on Friday, Sept. 29, at 606 Auction Road, Manheim. “Everyone is invited,” Niki said. “We are having a live band, food and drinks. We will have a silent auction with donations people have given me.”

As she prepares for her next competition, Niki is looking forward to spreading awareness of the need for support for cancer patients and caregivers. “I’m ready to bring my cause to the national level,” she stated.

A proponent of using only non-toxic skin care and beauty products in her business, Niki has also been selected to be a judge for The Skin Games, a skin care competition for licensed professionals. “This is like the Oscars for the esthetics industry,” she said of the competition that will be held in Atlanta in March of 2024.

With everything she does, Niki believes in making a difference in the lives of other people. “We are on this Earth for a very short

time,” she remarked. “I believe we need to help others and give back. Spread your light.”

Central Middle School. “We are constantly looking for ideas to bring our community together since the community supports our district so strongly.”

Members of the community are invited to reserve a spot to sell items at the yard sale. There is a charge to rent a space, and people can bring their own tables or rent one for an additional charge.

The goal of the yard sale is to provide one-stop shopping, Nemeth said, adding, “With all of the tables being close by, this encourages many people to come out and shop in one location. It should allow for easy access to the various yard sales.”

Along with the yard sale stands, a variety of vendors will be on-site for the event, including The Barking Baron, Cottage & Vine and Ashley Martin of Boutique 1780. “We will also have food available for purchase from The Egg Roll Lady, Next Level Pizza and Twisted Sisters,” Nemeth noted.

She added that organizers are looking forward to a unique opportunity to bring people out to support the school.

“This is our first year for the event, so we are excited to try something new to bring the community together and offer a space for people to sell their items,” she said. “We hope this will turn into an annual event.”

The yard sale is still accepting sign-ups. Interested people can access a QR code on a flyer by searching for “Manheim Central Middle School” on Facebook, or people can sign up by calling the middle school at 717-664-1700.

In the Steinmetz Gallery, Mia Curran is showcasing her photography in an exhibit titled “The Essence of Nature.” Through her featured work, Curran seeks to capture the unseen characteristics of gardens, flowers and nature. Although the show primarily features her photography, the pictures will be accompanied by various floral arrangements, which Curran crafted by hand. “My goal was to bring out what the average person might not see when walking through a garden,” Curran said. “There’s a whole world there that you don’t see until you get on your hands and knees and really look.”

Curran, who is a resident of Chester County, has been photographing since her father gifted her a camera when she was 8 years old. She has remained active in the arts throughout her career and relies primarily on self-

Penn State Extension to offer food preservation workshops

Penn State Extension, Lancaster County, will offer two home food preservation workshops.

The “Pressure Canning” workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the “Introduction to Drying” workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The programs will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in home food preservation. Canning and drying are methods of food preservation that allow people to enjoy seasonal foods all year long. While these methods of home food

preservation have existed for centuries, much has been learned about the science behind safe canning and drying methods.

In the upcoming workshops, Penn State Extension educators will explain the scientific reasoning behind today’s recommended methods for preserving products while dispelling food preservation myths and unsafe practices of the past.

In the canning worship, attendees will learn the science behind pressure canning recommendations as well as the basics of using a pressure canner based on current USDA canning guidelines. Pressure canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as

vegetables and meats. To register for the workshop by Monday, Aug. 14, visit www .extension.psu.edu/home -food-preservation-pressure -canning or call 877-345-0691.

In the drying workshop, participants will learn various methods of drying, including oven drying, using a dehydrator, microwave drying and air drying; pretreatment steps such as blanching and using anti-darkening soaking solutions to ensure a quality product; food safety considerations when processing jerky; what to look for when buying a dehydrator; and ideas for using dehydrated foods.

To register for the drying

workshop by Wednesday, Aug. 23, visit www.extension.psu .edu/introduction-to-drying or call 877-345-0691.

Alternately, “Introduction to Drying” will be offered as a live webinar on Monday, Sept. 25, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Register by Friday, Sept. 22, by visiting www.extension.psu.edu /home-food-preservation -introduction-to-drying or calling 877-345-0691.

Penn State encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. Those who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided should contact Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851.

Stress frompg 6

rage is the extreme outcome of impatience or frustration behind the wheel and often stems from traffic-related stress. Drivers can take steps to reduce stress and recognize behaviors that may contribute to road rage.

Don’t rush. Leave plenty time to get to a destination. Drivers are more likely to be impatient and react to traffic stressors if they are racing the clock.

Calm down. Drivers who experience something that has angered or upset them should take time to calm down before getting behind the wheel.

Be patient. Recognize that someone driving slowly may be lost or aging with diminished abilities.

Keep a safe distance. Tailgating can create animosity between drivers. By leaving room, people can avoid aggressive interactions between drivers that can contribute to frustration.

Do not honk unnecessarily. Honking out of frustration is unproductive and also may exacerbate stress levels and anger other drivers.

Take an alternative route. Drivers who know that certain roadways are plagued by traffic may want to find another route to avoid the traffic, even if the new route is longer.

Avoid traveling during rush hour. Roadways are busier at certain times of the day, and if possible, drivers may alter their schedule so that they commute during off-peak hours.

Share the driving. Split driving duties with others, particularly when feeling stressed out. Breaking up particularly long trips among a few drivers can relieve anxiety.

Driving can be stressful, but there are various ways to mitigate feelings that may escalate into anger and road rage.
