Serving the community Golf outing will benefit Iron-Leg

WhenJon Barrett and his wife, Sarah, moved back to Pennsylvania from New York during the pandemic, the couple prayed about finding a new church for Jon to pastor.

“I was looking for a church with a small, homey feeling,” Jon recalled. “My wife and I were praying about it, and the opportunity came up the first day I started looking.”

That opportunity was a position as executive director of the nonprofit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), which then alerted Jon to an open position as pastor at Grace Community Fellowship in Manheim.

Jon began preaching at Grace earlier this year and took over as pastor July 1. He continues to serve at both the church and CVCCS,noting that both jobs focus on helping people in the community.

“CVCCS is an amazing ministry,” he said. “It’s completely Jesusfocused. It’s focused on the transformation of people, not just providing services, but wanting to see people thrive and become self-sufficient.”

CVCCS operates a food and clothing bank, provides ministry programs for youths and offers financial literacy programs, among other initiatives.

At Grace, Jon is also focused on serving the community.

“I think it’s so important these days that people have a place they can come and feel connected to other people,” he stated. “Loneliness is a big issue, and people have gotten really isolated, especially after the pandemic. There is no substitute for personal interaction, and a lot of people are suffering from lack of community.”

That’s his top goal for Grace - to be a welcoming space for anyone.

“I want our community to know that we are a safe space for biblical truth,” he remarked. “I want them to feel a family atmosphere and to

know that they can rely on us. W hen people come to us, I want it to have the feeling of coming home.”

Jon, the father of two young adult daughters, said he sees his role in the church as a parental one.

“My passion is discipleship,” he explained. “I believe in being a spiritual father of sorts to people to help them as they grow in their faith. I want to see the church thrive.”

He cautions that while he wants Grace to continue to succeed in its ministry, he’s focused on growing the church organically.

“There are no gimmicks,” he said.

“ We just want to welcome people

who love the Lord and want to see the church thrive.”

He said people who come to Grace can expect a straight-forward message.

“There’s no fluff when you come to hear the sermons,” he commented. “It’s solid, biblical truth, but it’s not too deep over the heads of people where they can’t get it. Today, people are really looking for the truth, and we just give it unapologetically.”

Grace Community Fellowship is located at 1483 N. Colebrook Road, Manheim. Worship is held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., preceded by Sunday school for people of all ages at 9:30 a.m.

“Join us on a great day of golf and supporting our cause - giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,” said Sean Laukhuff, inviting people to the third annual Iron-Leg Corp.

Golf Outing.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. See Iron-Leg pg 2

Raising funds for Pleasant View

Pleasant View Communities in Manheim will host its annual golf tournament in September, and while the event is sold out for golfers, there are still ways to help the organization support its residents.

“ We’re encouraging people to donate items for our (giveaway) baskets,” said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator, who added that opportunities for tournament sponsorship are also available. “The public is invited to join us for dinner after the tournament as well.”

The event will be held on

Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Golfers will enjoy a grab-and-go lunch provided by the Pleasant View Auxiliary, followed by 18 holes of golf and a variety of on-course contests. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. by Culinesse, the new dining service provider at Pleasant View.

“People can purchase a ticket just for dinner, and this year, Pleasant View is providing transportation for residents who want to come for the meal,” Smith said.

A variety of baskets will be featured in a giveaway at the event. “We always have a really great selection of See Pleasant View pg 3

Moose International’s Tommy Moose (back, left), along with Iron-Leg president Matthew Millhouse (back, center) and vice president Sean Laukhuff, encourage community members to support a golf outing that will raise funds for prosthetics for children like Joseph (front).

Tickets will include the use of a golf cart, green fees, nonalcoholic beverages and lunch. There will also be a silent auction, giveaways and ceremonies, including an honor guard flag folding.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, as well as

for the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Iron-Leg formed in 2020 when Matt Millhouse and Manheim resident Laukhuff were looking for a way to help children in central Pennsylvania who need prosthetics. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was

born without his right leg, and the organization was started in his honor.

“Since we’ve started IronLeg, great things have been happening,” Laukhuff said. “We have gotten a hand for a kid, and just four months ago, we got our first leg for a local kid from Lititz.” Iron-Leg helps raise money for highend prosthetics, which are costly and not typically covered by insurance. Funds raised by the organization are also used to help recipients receive therapy to learn how to use the prosthetics.

Laukhuff noted that Joseph, the boy who recently received a new leg, will be at the golf outing. “He can do all the things right now that his peers can, and he can do the normal activities most kids can,” Laukhuff remarked.

In addition to raising funds, the golf outing is held as a memorial to honor the people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“We raise a 38-by-22-foot flag suspended by two cranes a total of 138 feet in the air

while bagpipes are played,” Laukhuff shared, adding that an honor guard will do a ceremonial flag folding while a bugle is played at the end of the event.

Items up for grabs at the auction will include a set of golf clubs; a $1,000 gift card; Omaha Steaks for a year; and more. A banquet dinner will held after the tournament at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering at Four Seasons Golf Club.

Laukhuff emphasized that Iron-Leg would not be able to fulfill its mission without the support from the community. He noted that prosthetic limb can cost anywhere from $5,000 to upward of $50,000. This year, the organization was chosen by Moose International from nonprofits throughout Pennsylvania as the recipient of its springtime donations. “We received $13,665,” Laukhuff said.

The deadline to register for the golf outing is Saturday, Sept. 9. For more information or to register, visit https://ironleg.org.

ASSETS will offer Finance Boot Camp for entrepreneurs in the business idea and start-up phases. Cohort sessions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays from Oct. 10 to Nov. 7 at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Additionally, participants may request a one-on-one coaching session outside of class.

The Finance Boot Camp topics will be accounting fundamentals - how to record, organize and understand financial information; the balance sheet and the profit and loss statement; how to build a financial model; how to budget and do financial forecasting; cash flow; finance tasks and routines; common tax deductions; and how to calculate a business’s gross profit margin.

The class will be facilitated by Aileen Wigotow, owner of Wigotow Consulting. After working for more than 15 years in the private and nonprofit sectors, Wigotow started her own business in order to provide

accounting services and resources to small business owners and entrepreneurs in Lancaster. With the belief that business can be used as a catalyst for good, Wigotow’s hope is that her consulting business can come alongside other socially minded businesses, and they can together be a part of positive change in the community.

Anyone who is interested in the boot camp but would like more information may schedule a free discovery meeting with ASSETS’ trained experts or email wbc@assetspa.org.

To learn more and to apply through Monday, Sept. 4, visit https://assets pa.org/ and click on “Boot Camps” under “Training.”

Nominations sought for award

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of

the population identifies as a minority to be in an environmental justice area.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes commu-

nity tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or plantings, regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.

Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in sup-

port of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.

To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmillion trees.org/contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing keystonetrees@ cbf.org or calling 717-200-

4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.

Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decision-making table.

Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to

lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.

Overdose awareness event slated

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed around the world on Aug. 31. It is a day to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died from a drug overdose, and it aims to reduce the stigma of a drugrelated death. Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss will host an event to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. It is open to anyone regardless of if their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.

The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount

Joy, and will feature keynote speaker Lori Kuhn, a boardcertified registered nurse, certified grief counselor and grief recovery method specialist. She has been impacted by the death of her daughter from an overdose. Kuhn, who lost her child as well as her husband within a four-year period, will talk about her journey through processing her grief to becoming whole, happy, and able to move forward with her life.

There is no cost to attend the International Overdose Awareness Day event, but registration is required. To register, visit www.Hospice Community.org/oad or call the Pathways Center at 717-391-2413.

Bash and Benefit will support nonprofit

“Grandview Vineyard is a family-owned and (familyoperated) business celebrating their 10th anniversary,” said Sarah Haines, owner. “You won’t want to miss this amazing celebration.”

Grandview will celebrate the milestone and support a local nonprofit at the 10th anniversary Bash and Benefit. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy. It will run from 1 to 8 p.m.

The festivities will feature music throughout the day from Adam Blessing, Ryan Moran, Schnazzy and the Grant Bryan Band. The Steel Wheels will headline the event with a performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. A variety of foodtrucks, including Fuego Latino, will be on-site, and wine and beer will be for sale. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

A grape stomp competition between two local businesses will take place at 3 p.m., and a live wine barrel auction will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the bash will benefit Aaron’s Acres. “They provide activities and services year-round for children and

young adults with disabilities,”

Haines said of the Lancasterbased organization. For 25 years, Aaron’s Acres has been providing therapeutically based recreational programs to people ages 5 to 21. Activities are directed by specially trained and certified staff in an environment that bolsters socialization and communication skills. Care for the whole family, including emotional, educational and recreational support, is offered through the organization as well.

First Citizens Community Bank is sponsoring the Bash and Benefit, and additional sponsors are still being sought, Haines noted. For more information on sponsorship, contact sarah@ grandviewwines.com.

Haines encourages everyone

to come out and enjoy the beautiful setting of the vineyard while having fun and supporting a great cause. “What could be better than a relaxing afternoon and evening lounging by the vineyard, sipping on wine and beer with friends while listening and dancing to amazing local musicians and supporting children with disabilities?” Haines remarked. “This is a family-friendly event. Drop in for an hour or stay all day.”

Tickets for the Bash and Benefit may be purchased at www.grandviewwines.com by clicking on “Shop” and then “Event Tickets.” There is a discount for purchasing tickets online through Thursday, Sept. 7. Tickets will also be available for cash-only purchase at the gate.

The Legislator Leadership Award was presented to Sen. Scott Martin, who was nominated by the Lancaster County Conservation District. This award recognizes legislators for outstanding efforts to further the activities and accomplishments of the state’s conservation districts or PACD on a statewide basis. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Martin is an advocate for conservation efforts across the state. He worked to enact the legislation that created the new statewide Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program, which represents a $154 million investment to help improve water quality and soil health. Martin was also instrumental in providing additional funding to conservation districts for their operational needs through the state budget process.

Piper Sherburne was one of

two recipients of the President’s Award. The PACD executive board president - currently Kelly Stagen - selects an individual, organization, or agency to receive this award in recognition of their outstanding efforts that have resulted in furthering the

accomplishments of PACD. Sherburne is PACD’s South East Region director and chair of the Berks County Conservation District board. She was recognized for her efforts to eradicate the spotted lanternfly in Pennsylvania. Sherburne is known locally,

statewide, and now nationally for her knowledge and input regarding this invasive pest. For more information about the work of the state’s 66 conservation districts, visit www.pacd.org or www.facebook.com/PA Conservation.

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.

The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification. Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.

Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information

and inspire improvements within local watersheds.

Preorders are required; no plants will be sold at the pickup locations. To place orders through Sunday, Aug. 27, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ mws-tree-sale.

Plants may be picked up on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

To learn more about the tree sale, visit the aforementioned website. A complete list of trees and shrubs with planting requirements is available at https://tinyurl.com/MWS

Landis Valley to reopen historic house

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.

The interior work included resecuring historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced. Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
