The Manheim Farm Show Is Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen the 67th annual Manheim Community Farm Show kicks off on Monday, Oct. 4, it will have a unique theme: “Back to Normal.” “We’re back, and we’re so excited to be having a farm show, since we couldn’t do it last year,” said Deb Seibert, director. The Manheim Farm Show will run from Oct. 4 through Friday, Oct. 8. Although it will be held on the farm show grounds adjacent to Manheim Central High School as usual, all visitors must park at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, and take a shuttle to the show due to limited parking at the site. The farm show is an opportunity to showcase agriculture and its importance in the community, Seibert noted, adding, “We are the only fair in Pennsylvania that’s called a ‘farm show.’ This is an agricultural event. It’s about farming and teaching where your food comes from.” The Manheim Community Farm Show will run from Monday, Oct. 4, through Friday, Oct. 8.

Due to ongoing limitations and guidelines for long-term care facilities and in lieu of its annual harvest festival, pig roast and auction, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will hold a drive through, curbside pickup pulled pork fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of East Fairview Church of the Brethren, 1187 Fairview Road, Manheim. Each meal will include fire-grilled and slow-roasted pulled See Pork pg 7
Inviting people to a pet blessing ceremony are Barbara J. Seras and her cat, Willie.
Our pets bring us joy and happiness. They love us unconditionally, and their presence has been proven to reduce stress. They are truly blessings in our lives, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church thinks so, too. The church, located at 90 S. Charlotte St., Manheim, will hold Francis Fest - Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be held on the church lawn. “Our pets are so important to us,” said Barbara J. Seras,
lives. For me, they bring a rhythm to my life.” Seras, who has been serving at St. Paul’s for the past 18 months, held similar ceremonies at her other churches over the years. She has blessed most household pets, as well as sheep, goats and the local K9 unit. “I’ve had people ride up on horses for the blessing,” she recalled. All pets are invited to Francis Fest, but they must be crated or leashed. “I just ask that (attendees’) pets are not running loose,” Seras stated.

Weachter To Display Paintings Marion Weachter’s latest collection of artwork will be on display at Mulberry Art Studios, 19 to 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. “Flowjects” will open with a First Friday reception on Oct. 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. and run through Sunday, Oct. 31. “Flowjects” features flowers and objects, and Weachter said she chose this title for her exhibit because it sounded edgy while also perfectly describing the pieces
that make up this collection. In painting the works to be exhibited, she felt challenged to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Weachter was born and raised in West Willow and moved to Manheim in 2012. As a child, she dreamed of going to art school, but she did not realize this dream and did not think about art for many years in her young adulthood. Then came some difficult years, as Weachter lost both her
parents and her spouse. She rediscovered her love of art at a paint night in 2015. She had never painted with acrylics before this outing and found she liked the medium, so she continued to learn by watching instructional video on YouTube from artists such as The Art Sherpa and Cinnamon Cooney. Mulberry Art Studios offers free parking in its private lot. For more information, visit www.mulberry artstudios.com.

Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, said he is pleased with the results of the adult triathlon the organization held on Aug. 8. “We had 234 participants, between teams and individual participation,” noted Ababou. “We were so happy to see that success.” Now, Ababou is looking ahead to the children’s version of the event. “It’s time for the youth (to participate) to help keep them moving,” he said. The 15th annual youth triathlon will be held at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. The triathlon is open to all area students between
the ages of 5 and 12, including those living in neighboring boroughs. Check-in time on the day of the event will be 3:45 p.m. Bicycle safety checks will be held from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. The event generally concludes by 6 p.m. The rain date will be Friday, Oct. 15. To hold a safe event, Ababou said that the maximum number of participants will remain at 70. Masks will be optional. Children will begin each segment of the event in waves for their designated age group. Youth participants will start the event with a swim in the indoor rec center pool. The bike portion of the event will be divided into age groups, with ages 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9

and will feature education areas, displays and animal exhibits, including a sow and litter. The Children’s Parade will be held on Oct. 4 at 6:15 p.m. and will feature a new category for children ages 8 to 10. A variety of make-andtake activities for children will be held in the agriculture promotion tent on Farm Show Lane as well. Seibert also noted that new this year, the vendor area by the pool and parking lot will be under a tent. The Manheim Young Farmers will collect nonperishable items during the farm show parade on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 6. Personal care items will be accepted as well, and all donations will benefit the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Items may also be dropped off throughout the week at the Children’s Farm Show area. Seibert underscored that the farm show would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers, who donate more than 10,000 hours of their time to make the show a success. There are multiple ways to volunteer with the farm show, including joining a committee, working at the french fry stand, helping with parking and more. The week will feature hundreds of students who bring their livestock to the show, including dairy beef, lambs, steers, pigs, goats and rabbits. Seibert explained that the Manheim Farm Show offers three options for anyone who purchases an animal during the week. “They can take the animals home and put them out in their pasture,” she said. “They can take them to a processing facility for their meat, or they can buy an animal and donate it to the food bank.” The farm show has a working relationship with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which will collect the animals. The exception, Seibert noted, are the steaks that come from the steers, which are given directly to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. “Some of the people who use the food bank have never had steaks donated to them before,” she noted. “This is prime beef.” Throughout the week, the farm show will focus on family, faith, community, agriculture and fun, Seibert said. Exhibits will include baked goods, needlecraft, florals and vegetables. Seibert emphasized that all entrants will need to obtain a new number this year. “We are starting over at number one,” she said, noting that some participants have used the same number year after year. People may also bring pictures of their pets instead of the animal, she noted. “Some animals are too afraid to come out or too anxious to be in a crowd like this,” she explained. “I can bless the picture if that’s the case.” She also encouraged children to bring a stuffed animal for a blessing. “They can take them home, and when they go to bed that night, they are sleeping with their blessing right next to them,” she stated. The ceremony will also include a reading of “The Rainbow Bridge,” a poem dedicated to pets that have passed away. “We’ll include a prayer for animals we love but no longer see,” Seras remarked. “When a pet dies, it’s a big loss.” She explained that Francis Fest

takes its name from St. Francis. “He was a very beloved saint who was well known for his love of (God’s) creation,” she said. Donations will be collected at Francis Fest for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, including dry and canned food, toys, litter and gift cards. Seras noted that she hopes to see a good turnout for Francis Fest, which she described as a “great celebration” of the creatures that bring us comfort. “This is a nice way to bless something we love and to celebrate how special animals are to us,” she said. For more information on Francis Fest, call the church at 717665-6584.

Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus was pleased with the effort, and was proud of his team’s defense, noting that across the back they really denied the through the ball and limited Ephrata’s opportunities. “It was a classic Ephrata-Manheim Central game,” Stoltzfus said. “Each team had their changes. Their keeper made an amazing save in the second half. They are really good on corners. They put that ball right where it needs to be, and in the end, it just squeaked under the crossbar.” CROSS COUNTRY The Manheim boys lost to Octorara 19-39 and Lancaster Catholic 2234. Senior Michael Greenwald placed third overall with a time of 17:49. Junior Cameron Evans (19:23) was 11th overall, sophomore Carter Bruckhart (19:37) and senior Judah Bruckhart (19:38) were 13th and 14h overall, respectively. Saunders (seven tackles), Kahlen Watt (nine tackles), and Nick Haas, Tyler Fahnestock and Mason Weaver with five tackles each. They are undefeated and playing as a team, and that pleases Barons’ coach Dave Hahn. He said everybody, top to bottom, is communicating. They’re working with one another, helping each other. “I’m pleased with how we’ve come together as a team since Week One,” he said. “We’re playing for one another, we’re not playing as a bunch of individuals, but as a team, for each other. And I think that’s been pretty noticeable by myself, by the coaching staff, and I think that’s what’s kind of helped lead to some of our success.” BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons beat Ephrata 1-0 last Tuesday. Aaron Mowrer scored the game-winner 52 minutes into the contest, off a corner kick by Peter Burkhart. The Barons had six corners and six shots in the game. The win broke a two-game losing streak, as Manheim lost to Elizabethtown 2-0 and 2-1 in double overtime to Palmyra. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Barons earned a 3-1 win on Sept. 18 against Palmyra. After trailing 1-0, senior Hannah Adair notched three goals in the second half, including a penalty kick. Abbie Reed and Grade Haldeman registered assists. Manheim dropped a 2-1 double overtime loss to a talented Ephrata team on Sept. 21. Kaylee Neff scored with 16:52 remaining in regulation, punching in a rebound off a goalie stop on a restart kick from Adair. Ephrata scored the winning goal on a corner kick with 5:25 left in the second overtime, 95 minutes into the game.

Junior Air Rifle Program Promotes Marksmanship The Junior Air Rifle program is looking for participants who want to learn gun safety and marksmanship in a friendly and relaxed environment. The program will be held at the Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 9. The classes will run through Saturday, Dec. 18, and will begin at 9 a.m. “We hope (participants) have a good time, learn safe gun handling and proper respect for guns and perhaps decide to make this a longerterm activity,” said instructor Tom Amlie. “If nothing else, familiarity with shooting air rifles should take some of the mystery and fear out of the idea of guns and shooting.” As Amlie explained, air rifles propel a projectile, either a pellet or BB,
by compressed air or by a spring rather than by gunpowder. “Air rifles can range from the spring-powered Daisy Red Ryder up to Olympic-quality air rifles, which use pre-compressed air and cost several thousand dollars,” he stated. The program is open to any youth age 9 and older, and it begins with an extensive safety orientation for all participants, even those who have shot with the club previously. “On the first day, we shoot at larger air pistol targets, shooting off of supports,” Amlie stated. “This lets the shooters concentrate on sight picture and trigger control. The more forgiving air pistol targets also provide some better positive reinforcement on that first day.” As the course progresses, the targets become more difficult, and students may advance to unsupported shooting in a prone
position. Amlie, who has been running the program for two years, said he enjoyed marksmanship activities when he was a teenager. “Air rifles … provide a safe, inexpensive, lowkey introduction to the shooting sports,” he remarked. “Some of the local high schools have air rifle programs, so this also provides a nice background in case anyone wants to get involved with their school team.” The air rifle program offers an opportunity to try something new and hone skills, he stated, adding, “Shooting is a sport where competing against yourself and seeing improvement is as or more important than competing against others. Although we track the shooters’ averages from week to week, we focus more on the improvements from week to week rather than rank-
ing shooters.” He noted that he also likes to emphasize the longevity of the sport. “I always point out to our shooters that marksmanship activities can be a lifetime activity, irrespective of age or gender,” he said. “One of the oldest Olympic athletes ever was a free pistol shooter - Ragnar Skanaker, who took the bronze medal in 1992 at the age of 58 while the overall champion of the NRA National High Power Rifle Championship in 2021 was a young lady from Harleysville.” Club rifles and eye protection are available for participants, and parents are encouraged to stay and assist or observe. There is a small fee for participation. For more information or to register, contact Amlie at 717-342-4484 or tta2@psu.edu.
