A Jolly Old Race BY CATHY MOLITORIS

n Saturday, Dec. 4, the streets of Manheim will be overrun with Santas. The sixth annual Manheim Lions Club Santa 5K Run & Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will feature participants dressed as the jolly old elf. Registration is now open for the event, and people are encouraged to register early to ensure the lowest entry fee and to obtain special race swag. There is a discounted entry fee until Monday, Nov. 1. Anyone age 15 and older may choose either a Santa suit or a crewneck sweatshirt if registration is received before Monday, Nov. 15. Anyone age 14 and younger will receive a crewneck sweatshirt and a Santa hat if registered before that date as well. Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square. “This is a really fun day,” said Nancy Husser, event chair. “It’s a way to support our community, and it’s a fundraiser for our club.”

O

She emphasized that money raised by the event benefits local people. “All of the money stays in Manheim,” she stated, adding that the funds will be used to address community needs and support groups, including Cub Scout Pack 47. “The Manheim Lions Club motto is ‘We serve,’ and this is just one way we can give back to our community.”

“This is a really fun day,” said Nancy Husser, event chair. “It’s a way to support our community, and it’s a fundraiser for our club.” Husser said over the years she’s seen a variety of costumed participants beyond Santa Claus. “We’ve had the Grinch and Mrs. Grinch for several years,” she noted. “We’ve had a lot of elves. I haven’t had any snowmen yet, though.” Community members who live along the route are encouraged to come out and show their support

Comfort Food For A Cause Hearts will be warmed by fellowship and tummies will be warmed by comfort food when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds a potpie dinner. The dinner will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. Dinner will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s going to be a sit-down dinner in our fellowship hall,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a coordinator of the church’s Mission Outreach Team. “We will also have meals available to go if people want to do that, or they can purchase potpie in quart

containers to take home.” Along with potpie, the meal will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a homemade dessert and a beverage. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free. Proceeds from the dinner will support a mission trip that church members will take in June of 2022. “We are still planning the destination,” Ruhl noted, adding that they are looking for destinations that may need extra volunteers due to devastation from extreme weather events. “We’re definitely going. We’re just not sure where yet.”

The Manheim Lions Club will hold a Santa 5K Run & Walk in December.

The Return Of The Manheim Farm Show Cassady Martin cuddles a 10week-old piglet on opening day of the 67th annual Manheim Community Farm Show. The show ran from Oct. 4 through 8 and included a variety of agriculture exhibits, livestock shows, food, commercial entries and more. for the race participants. “I try to go around to every single household the race course impacts and drop off a paper telling them when the race is and encouraging them to cheer on the runners,” Husser said. “We’ve had people who play Christmas music from their porch.” Along with the race, the Lions Club will also collect new, unwrapped Toys for Tots donations at the event, Husser noted. Trophies will be awarded for both overall male and female finishers as well as top finishers in each age category. Husser noted, however, that the event doesn’t focus on being a hardcore race. “It’s low-key,” she remarked. “There are serious runners among (the participants), but at the same time, a lot of people who come out do it just to dress up and have a good time out on the course. You don’t have to run. We have lots of walkers, and that’s also encouraged.” For more information on the race, visit www.manheimlions.org. DSAA is the first agency in the state to use the Re-Cap software, Emminger said, adding, “All of this is clientdriven, and it’s very individualized, depending on what the client needs.” Over the course of the year, the client initially will meet at least weekly with the coach, but frequency will decrease as recovery stabilizes. “The coach is always available for a text or phone call or a meeting at any time during the year,” Emminger emphasized. The goal at the end of the year is for the client to be self-sufficient in his or her recovery efforts. While the grant will fund the recovery coach, Emminger will head up the family component of Re-Cap. “People who are in recovery have often burned a lot of bridges with their family, and they aren’t sure how to make amends or how to rebuild those relationships,” she said. “I’ll help families assess their needs. I’ll provide addiction education and help guide them in how they can best support their loved one.”

or rebuilding their relationship with their family,” said Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “This is called ‘recovery capital,’ and the more stable your recovery capital is, the better your odds of staying in recovery.” The Recovery Capital Program (Re-Cap) is accepting applicants age 18 and older to participate in the program. Although DSAA’s grant is for a two-year pilot program, Re-Cap participants will commit to the program for one year. During that time, they will work one-on-one with a recovery coach and will have access to certified recovery specialists as well as computer software designed to connect them to community resources, collect data and monitor progress, Emminger said. “People who are new in recovery, oftentimes they have a bunch of barriers facing them. They might be on probation. They might need to find a job or a place to live,” she explained. “All of these can be barriers to a successful recovery.”

Emminger noted that participation in Re-Cap is completely free. “One of the reasons we applied for this grant is because typically in recovery, people have to pay out of pocket for care or they have to use the program attached to a specific facility, which can be very limiting,” she stated. “Our coach will work with the person regardless of where they are in their recovery or what recovery path they are taking.” DSAA is one of just a handful of agencies to be awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Emminger is hopeful that once the pilot program is wrapping up, she will be able to apply to fund a second recovery coach. To apply for Re-Cap, visit www.dsasquared.org and fill out a contact form, call the office at 717-492-4596 or send a message through DSAA’s Facebook page.

It was fight and the scores with 22 digs. Manheim extended (25-23, 25-21 and 25-18) do not plays, but ultimately, the Mounts size wore down the Barons. “You can dodge a bullet only so many times,” Moyer said. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons battled McCaskey, the two-time defending Section One champion, and pulled out a 2-1 victory at Doe Run on Sept. 30. The goals came early in this contest, as the Red Tornado scored at the five-minute mark of the opening half and Connor Caterbone evened the game at 11 just two minutes later. Bradyn Dombach earned the assist. In the last minute of the game, Caterbone sent a pass to Dombach, who netted the game-winner. Central now has a 7-5 overall record. FIELD HOCKEY This week started off well for Manheim with a 2-0 win against Cocalico on Senior Night in Manheim. Kiley Hosler found the back of the cage and Monica Herman scored on a penalty stroke. Central was not as fortunate in its next outing, losing 1-0 against Donegal. “We put up a good fight, especially in the fourth quarter,” Photo by Cheri Sine Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs Grace Stoltzfus slaps a winner for the Barons during their 3-0, said. “Turnovers plagued us.” Section Two loss at E-town on September 30. illustrate how close the match was. It was fast paced, with many rallies and plenty of digs and blocks to keep the points alive. From a 2-1 Central lead, the first game featured 10 ties and the biggest lead was two points. The Barons led 22-20 and the teams were tied at 23 apiece. The second game had 12 ties. No team pulled away because there were too many unforced errors. No one seized momentum until, tied at 16-16, the Mountaineers went on a 7-0 run for the biggest lead of the match. The Barons narrowed the advantage to 24-21, but that was as close as they could get.

Manheim’s Emma Damon lays out to keep an E-town spike alive during the Barons’ 3-0, Section Two loss to the host Bears on September 30.

GIRLS’ SOCCER Manheim rolled past McCaskey 7-0 on Sept. 30 in Lancaster. Senior Hannah Adair added to her hot scoring streak (she had two goals earlier in the week against Garden Spot) registering four goals. Abbie Reed had a big game with two goals and three assists. Kaylee Neff also scored. Summer Bates registered three assists. The Barons have a 6-3 record. CROSS COUNTRY Michael Greenwald (19:41) finished fifth overall, but his Barons lost to Columbia 15-50 and Northern Lebanon 18-37 on Oct. 5. Greenwald wasn’t the only one to deliver a strong performance. Cameron Evans (21:16) was seventh and Carter Bruckhart (21:32), Judah Bruckhart (22:15) and Joshua Noll (22:23) placed nine through 11, respectively. Barons coach Ryan Kennedy said his squad continues to improve. “Boys are in a bit of a rebuild-

ing year,” he said. “We are fortunate to have Michael Greenwald as a strong front runner. We also have some young guys with potential, so the future is bright.” The girls beat Columbia 15-50 and Northern Lebanon 20-43. Jenna Moffett was the top finisher for the Barons with a 23:12, good for second overall. Her teammates were close behind, as the next three finishers were all Central runners and a seven of the top nine came from Manheim. Olivia Sunderland (22:18) was third overall, followed closely by Reagan Ibach (23:27) and Julie Lindberg (23:51). Madelynn Hoffman (25:50) was seventh and Alaina Bruckhart (26:04) and Taylor Bruckhart (27:03) placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Paige Heslop (28:13) was 13th. The pure dominance by these Lady Barons is something fans have come to expect. Their coach could see this excellence building. “Over the past few years, we’ve

had our eye on this season as our best chance to clinch the section title,” Kennedy said. “We are in a good spot with one meet to go. I’m proud of the girls for sticking together over the years. They’ve been working hard since June and some of them have made huge improvements.” FOOTBALL Fans sitting in the bleachers at Rettew Stadium wondered how Warwick lost its last two games. The Warriors came ready to play and racked up 522 yards of offense in a 35-28 win, handing the Barons (5-1) their first loss of season. Central was in control early, scoring on its opening drive. Running back Justin Heffernan scored the first of four touchdowns, finishing with 145 yards. Judd Novak’s tossed 14yard TD pass to Logan Hostetter help put Manheim on top at halftime, 28-27. Warwick won the battle at the line of scrimmage in the second half and pulled away for the win.

Fictional Story, Real Technology BY COURTNEY MENGEL

“I’ve been writing all my life,” said Lancaster resident Dan Armstrong. From 1982 to 1987, Armstrong wrote songs for his Christian rock band, Damascus; from 1992 to 1997, he wrote 1,000 oneminute shows called “The Wacky Words of Dan Armstrong” on WJTL; and in 2015, he published “The Adventures of a Real-Life Cable Guy.” Armstrong is a man of many talents. He can speak Japanese, perform magic tricks, and

craft owls out of pieces of wood. He’s a real estate investor, a business owner, a storyteller, a husband, and the father of four girls. Needless to say, he’s a pretty busy guy. Armstrong’s schedule, however, didn’t stop him from writing another book - a book completely different from his first publication. Almost two years ago, Armstrong came across an article about Smart Dust - the world’s smallest radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip, measuring 100 times smaller than the diameter of a

human hair. By combining the chip’s compactness and wireless communication with internet technology, Smart Dust could be used for security, transportation, entertainment, traceability, logistics, and more. Armstrong couldn’t believe that such a thing has existed for the past 20 years, so he decided to learn more. One thing led to another, and soon enough, Armstrong found himself wondering, “ What does it mean for us as a society to allow somebody or a group of people to have information about us without our consent?” For the past 18 months, Armstrong has explored this question by writing a book where the story itself is fictional, but the technology is real. In Armstrong’s new book, “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism,” the Smart Dust particles penetrate human skin, which enable trackers to monitor every

moment of an individual’s day. Readers will be exposed to history, psychological warfare, and philosophy. By trans-humanism, Armstrong explained, “We’re on the edge of becoming human robotic AI counterparts.” He continued, “Like human 2.0 … that we’re no longer pure, but we’re a mixture of human technology and organic materials.” “In an age where sci-fi merges with reality by the day, we see the world in ‘Smart Dust’ is not too far away,” wrote Zachary Denman, a filmmaker in the United Kingdom, who reviewed the book. “This is an AI horror story, which no one can truly comprehend, not even the creators of it.” A sequel is already in the works. “Smart Waves” will be about frequencies that affect a person’s mood that were used during the Iraq War. Copies of “Smart Dust: The Dawn of Trans-Humanism” will be available to purchase on Amazon.
