Come Shopping At The Holiday Home Market BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“We’re going to have a nice mix of direct-sales companies and vendors who sell homemade items,” said Leslie Hawkins, describing the Holiday Home Market. “There’s going to be a lot of unique gift items and lots of opportunities for holiday shopping.”

The Holiday Market on Adele will feature a variety of vendors.

The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 Adele Ave., Manheim. It will feature a variety of vendors and food options. “It’s a great way to kick off your holiday shopping and support local families and businesses in the community,” said Chelsey Harnly, who is organizing the event with Stephanie Rogers. “We try really hard to make sure the vendors are diverse, so you won’t be seeing six vendors with the same things at our event.” This is the sixth year for the market, which Harnly and Rogers started to showcase local businesses like their own. “Stephanie and I both had businesses, and we were not having much luck getting into the vendor shows that were already

each year’s event has benefited a local nonprofit or cause. This year, North Star Initiative will have a stand set up for donations, and a portion of the proceeds from the food stand and coffee bar will benefit the organization. North Star provides support and services for survivors of sex trafficking. “Sexual abuse recovery is something that is very close to my heart personally, and I love the mission of North Star and how they provide a safe place for these women and also provide education, counseling and other resources these women need to get back on their feet,” Harnly said. Vendors are highlighted on the market’s Facebook page at 2022 Holiday Market on Adele and on Instagram @holidaymarketonadele. Because of construction at Manheim Central High School, parking is limited, but some will be available around the exhibition hall and across the street at the community pool. The exhibition hall is handicapped-accessible.

Handmade ornaments will be among the items featured at the Holiday Home Market.

Each morning, she would see a nurse passing by on the way to work and wished to someday become a nurse herself and in some way be able to support the people in her hometown. She became a licensed nurse while living in India in

1985 and moved many more times before coming to the United States in 1989, fleeing religious persecution in Kenya. Ketema has lived in Lancaster for 34 years now and works as a nurse at Lancaster General Hospital. Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser meal at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville, on Saturday, Nov. 19, from noon to 4:30 p.m. A variety of meals will be available to purchase for curbside pick up, and the funds raised from the event will support the organization’s free clinic in Harar, Ethiopia. Each meal will include a choice of three different Ethiopian dishes, such as doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Each meal will also be served with injera, a type of Ethiopian flatbread. The clinic in Harar provides free medical services for people who are in need or homeless throughout the city. “The people of Lancaster have always been so generous in supporting our clinic,” said Wegayhu Ketema, Members of Siloam Ethiopia will use the funds raised from co-founder of Siloam the event to support the organization’s free clinic in Ethiopia. “You can’t accom- Harar, Ethiopia.

Encounter, Music, City Gate Back in February, when Encounter Ministries, an event-based organization, formed, the founders were introduced to City Gate, a ministry with a branch located at 101 N. Broad St., Lititz, founded by Brian and Kim Zimmerman. City Gate, which also has locations in Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, gives local churches an opportunity to step into the community. “We saw what City Gate had to offer, and we wanted Friday night really bad,” said Ernie Simmons of Encounter. When Friday nights became available in September, Encounter jumped at the chance. Simmons said that the vision for the venue on Friday nights is to recall the coffeehouses of the 1970s. “You’d go in and you’d hear guitar, but, in this case, the music is Christian,” said Simmons. Friday night coffeehouses will be held each Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., and each week’s event will offer live music and snacks, as well as a time of fellowship. Live music will feature

Christian recording artists. “We’ll have coffee and snacks, but the goal is for fellowship and availability,” explained Encounter founder Terry Shamberger. Shamberger noted that although the coffeehouses include music and snacks, the goal is to reach out to those who may not know God’s love. “Even people that go to church sometimes haven’t experienced love,” he said. “(God’s love) happens when everybody’s accepted when they come through that door,” he explained, “(when people feel) they’re appreciated, they’re acknowledged, and that there’s somebody here available (to talk).” Shamberger added that he believes social media has interfered with the development of true relationships where people can “sit down with someone one-on-one.” “Just to be able to share a little bit about what’s going on in their lives,” he noted. “It may even start with just asking someone if we can pray for them.” Simmons pointed out that volunteers at the coffeehouses will not shy from answering big

Volunteers pack takeout meals for a free Thanksgiving dinner.

The members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy want to make sure everyone enjoys a homecooked meal on Thanksgiving. For the 18th year, the church will offer a free community Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, Nov. 24. The meal will be available for curbside pickup at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We’ll be doing the majority of the cooking and prep at The Gathering Place, with some things made at the church,” said Janet Lehman, who helps to organize the meal. The Gathering Place offered the use of its facilities for the first time last year after demand for the meal began to outgrow the church’s capacity. Last year, more than 700 meals were served. This year’s meal will be slightly different from past offerings. “This year, we’re doing ham instead of our usual turkey,” Lehman said,

explaining that a nationwide shortage of turkey breast separate from whole turkeys prompted the committee to shift to ham. The meal will also include mashed potatoes, filling, sweet potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, applesauce, rolls and butter and dessert. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the meal on Wednesday, Nov. 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at The Gathering Place. Volunteers are also needed to help on Thanksgiving Day. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” Lehman noted of volunteering. “You’ll

Barons Fall Short Against Greencastle-Antrim

FIELD HOCKEY “The game was a tough loss for the girls - they really played hard!” Close but so far away for the said head coach Morgan Briggs of Manheim Central girls’ volleyball the field hockey team’s 4-0 loss in team. The Lady Barons were lookthe District 3-2A quarterfinals, ing to extend their season by at “We were outmatched by a highly least one more match but instead skilled Hershey team.” saw their season end with a 3-2 The talent that Briggs was loss to Greencastle-Antrim on referring to was four Hershey October 27th. Making the loss players expected to play Division I sting even more is the fact that field hockey which overshadowed Manheim held a 2-0 lead after what Briggs called “a great defenopening with wins of 25-22 and sive effort” from Emmy Weaver 25-19 and even held a 23-19 lead and Libby Urban as well as some in game four but still saw the Lady great saves by Laci Nelson. Blue Devils rip off three straight Manheim Central rebounded well with a 1-0 victory over New Oxford on November 2nd that not only puts the Lady Barons in a battle with Northern York for 5th place in the 2A bracket, but also secured a spot in the PIAA-2A Championships that kick off November 8th. “This is the first time we have qualified for the state tournament since 2018,” said Briggs, “so definitely a huge achievement for the team. We are really looking forward to the game against Northern York.” Kiley Hosler used an Ella Brubaker feed to score what proved to be the game winner late in the third quarter. Three Nelson saves, combined with solid defense, were enough to make that lead hold up. “I was thrilled with the team’s win tonight,” exclaimed Briggs, “The girls played aggressive and won many 50/50 balls all over the field.” CROSS COUNTRY The cross-country team sent seven runners to Big Spring High School on October 29th to compete in the District 3 ChampiStaff photo onships. “No state qualifiers for Audrey Dippel slaps a winner for the Barons in their 3-2 loss in a us,” said head coach Ryan District Three Class 3A quarterfinal match at Greencastle-Antrim Kennedy, “but it was an A- perforon October 27. mance overall.”

games to steal the win. “GA is ranked #1 in District 3 and is a solid team,” said head coach Jason Moyer. “We are very proud of the progress we have made over the season with this group of girls. They really came together at the end of the season and made this year very special.” Addy Doerschuk dished out 36 assists with the majority going to Maddie Knier who tallied 24 kills. Kaylee Dougherty added seven digs, Natalie Siegrist three blocks while Aslin Latkovich rounded out the team leaders with three aces.

Five of those seven runners were Lady Barons, giving Central enough to compete in the team battle where they finished 15th in the 2A race. Reagan Ibach led the way with a time of 22:00.2, placing her 41st out of 139 runners. Jenna Moffett followed with a 50th place run, posting a 22:20.5 with Taylor Bruckhart the last Lady Baron to crack the top 100, with an 84th place run of 23:30.1. Alexa Hoffman (110th - 24:48.7) and Julie Lindberg (132nd 26:43.6) completed the Central squad. On the boy’s side it was Carter Bruckhart with his 18:20.8 slotting him 169th while Cameron Evans finished 207th with a time of 18:53.8. FOOTBALL If the Manheim Central foot-

ball team was playing horseshoes or quates their narrow 21-17 setback to Exeter Township on October 28th would still count. But since they were playing football, it knocks Central from the ranks of the unbeaten and puts them at 91 on the season. That is still good enough to earn Manheim the second seed in the upcoming District 3-4A Championship and a spot in the November 11th quarterfinals opposite the winner of the York Suburban and Donegal match-up. The regular season finale loss started well for Manheim with the Barons scoring 17 of the game’s first 24 points, unfortunately Exeter scored the final 14 while keeping Manheim in check, leading to that 21-17 final. Dylan Neff put Central on the board near the end of the opening frame, con-

verting a 20-yard field goal for a 7-3 contest. Aaron Enterline flexed his muscle from there, snagging a 21-yard TD pass from Zach Hahn before returning a punt 73-yards for a 17-7 Manheim Central lead. Exeter needed just 41-seconds to answer with Joey Schlaffer breaking free for a 70-yard score, making it a 17-14 game at the break. Exeter’s Richie Karstein capped his twotouchdown day with the game winner mid-way through the third quarter. Enterline finished with 84 yards and that touchdown on his five catches while Hahn completed 10 of 21 passes for 121 yards and one TD. Brycen Armold broke the 100-yard plateau, posting 105 yards on 23 carries, giving him 1,723 on the season.
