Beware of the Belsnickel BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Inviting people to Mountain View Baptist Church are (from left) Karen McCoy, Tim McCoy and Ken Olenderski.

Teaching biblical truths ountain View Baptist Church is a place were everyone is invited to learn and grow in their faith, said Karen McCoy, whose husband, Tim, is the pastor. “I would love to see people come and check us out,” she shared. “They’re going to get the Bible, and it’s prayerfully going to become real to them. Jesus will become real to them, and salvation will become real to them.” The couple started Mountain View Baptist Church about a year ago. The congregation meets on Sunday mornings in the exhibit hall on the Manheim Community Farm Show property, 502 Adele Ave. Worship begins with a Bible study

at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m., lunch and then an afternoon Bible study at about 1 p.m. “If we get done with lunch, and it’s not time for Tim to start the afternoon service, we’ll play cornhole,” said church member Ken Olenderski.

“I love the Bible. I love to teach the Bible.” “It’s a little bit different setup maybe than other churches, but it’s been a great way to really get to know people. It’s been a lot of fun.” The McCoys, originally from Kansas, came to Lancaster County about five years ago. Their granddaughter, then 8, had been diagnosed

with terminal cancer, so they wanted to be nearby while she received treatment in Philadelphia. She was given an experimental drug, and it saved her life. “At first, we stayed in the area because it seemed like God kept us here,” Tim recalled, noting that he began helping at a church in Millersville. “Then we felt like God would have us start a little church.” Tim had been a pastor for more than 20 years before coming to central Pennsylvania, and he said he can’t imagine doing anything else. “I love the Bible,” he said. “I love to teach the Bible. I think there ought to be a church on every corner, and everybody ought to go to church every Sunday.”

Creating safe spaces BY ANN MEAD ASH

Responding to the mental health needs of teenagers Today’s teenagers are facing issues unfamiliar to their parents and grandparents, and according to Susannah Moore, clinical social worker/therapist with Integrate Therapy and Wellness Collective in Bird-in-Hand, that can make it hard for generations to relate. “Those of us who graduated high school before COVID-19 hit and before social media took over the way it has, simply can’t understand what it means to be a teen today,” said

Moore. As a former school social worker, Moore is especially familiar with the issues facing students. “(Teenagers) have had their entire world shifted over and over,” Moore commented. “They haven’t had the sense of stability that most of us had.” Mental health issues among teens were rising prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 10-year Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that in 2019, nearly 40% of high school students reported periods of feeling

Paden noted that REYS fills an important role in the community, and when it was closed, people noticed. “A lot of families kept asking us, ‘When are you guys going to open?’ Our kids kept asking, ‘When can we go back to REYS?’” she said. REYS relies on financial support from the community to offer its programs for free to families, and it requires a roster of volunteers to support students. The organization is currently in the middle of a campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of the year, Paden noted. “We want to do everything we can to continue to make our programs possible for local families,” she remarked. “REYS is a really fun place to make friends and for students to receive extra support and love as they journey through life.” For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.

families. According to McDevitt, help is available when parents and school staff members respond to student needs. “Lancaster is very fortunate to have a wealth of resources, but we need to ensure that kids feel safe sharing with the adults in their lives,” she said. “They need to know not only that they will be heard, but also that we will take action to provide them with tangible support.” Moore echoed McDevitt’s thoughts, saying, “As a therapist working with teens, I am primarily interested in giving

them that space where they feel believed and trusted and respected.” She praised area schools for their efforts in this area. “Schools are doing an incredible job of integrating mental health awareness into the school system,” she said. McDevitt noted that breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is a necessity. “Parents and other adults engaging with youth need to become comfortable with uncomfortable conversations and situations when it comes to their children’s mental health,” she said.

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses on Saturdays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. Attendees will be able to watch trains of various scales running on more

Moore pointed out that the rise of cyberbullying coupled with the pandemic has complicated the situation. “Complex trauma is what we’re looking at,” she said. “ Ways that complex trauma can present can look like puberty or trying to gain independence … (but) something that is true for most teens is that they benefit from support in figuring out their own mental health.” Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), noted that communication is key, but not always easy. “Teens are struggling with feeling connected and heard,” she said. Moore agreed, saying, “These kids need safe spaces to process all that’s happened,” she noted. “Teens need to be accepted by their parents and to be capable of discussing mental health with their parents.” Ambur Gregorio, clinical social worker/therapist with Integrate Therapy, pointed out that parents may struggle to understand their child’s situation. “(Teenagers) are dealing with so much that their parents didn’t have to deal with, (and parents) don’t know how to help their kids walk through this,” she said, noting that after working many years in adult corrections, one of her goals is to help break cycles of trauma and abuse that may exist in

Local design studio Lime Creative has announced an initiative called LimeAid to provide no-cost creative services to small, start-up and under-resourced nonprofit organizations and ministries. Conceived by Lime Creative owner and Lancaster native Laura Kline, LimeAid’s focus will be on supporting nonprofit partners for specific projects they designate and define during the application and review process. Kline has nearly two decades of experience working with nonprofits and ministries as a graphic designer, Web designer and developer and marketing and communications consultant. LimeAid provides a cost estimate for each partner ministry’s project, and then cuts it by 50%, which is Lime Creative’s personal donation to the cause. The remaining 50% of the estimated costs are covered through the generosity of donors, who support individual projects on a case-by-case basis or agree to support LimeAid monthly.

The number of ministry partners and projects to be taken on depends on the amount of support raised. Since 2007, Lime Creative has helped nonprofits and small businesses grow by developing brands that speak clearly, create connections and inspire action. brought to him by their parents or guardian. In addition to random appearances around town, the Belsnickel will meet people at the Manheim Historical Society’s Holiday Open House. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 12:30

to 4:30 p.m. at three locations - the Fasig House, 30 E. High St.; the Keath House, 32 E. High St.; and the Harry B. Shearer Heritage Center, 88 S. Grant St. Festivities for the open house will include Colonial Christmas tours, photos with the Belsnickel, book signings by local author Mike Gerhard and sampling of hot mulled cider, prepared over the fireplace in the Keath House. “We are encouraging people to come to the Fasig House first, leave through the front door, go to the Keath House and through the front door there and then leave out the back door, taking their cider with them,” Williams said. The open house will provide an opportunity for members of the Manheim Historical Society to show-

case holiday decorations and traditions of German Americans during Colonial times. “They didn’t do a lot of decorating like we do now, but they would put a tree up,” Williams stated. “They would often hang it upside down from the ceiling to keep rodents away.” Trees and garlands were often decorated with a Froebel star, a Christmas ornament made of folded paper. “We are really excited to try some new things this year and encourage people to come to our open house,” Williams remarked. “It’s a nice way to see how people used to celebrate Christmas.” For more information, visit www.manheimhistori calsociety.org or follow Manheim Historical Society on Facebook.

Servant Stage will present a new, original Christmas revue show, “Jingle Bell Jukebox,” at venues across Lancaster County. Upcoming performance locations will include The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, from Friday to Sunday, Dec. 1 to 3; Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, from Thursday to Sunday, Dec. 7 to 10; and Lancaster County Christian School, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from Friday

to Sunday, Dec. 15 to 17. With a cast of more than two dozen local performers of a range of ages backed by a live, five-piece band, “Jingle Bell Jukebox” includes dozens of popular holiday standards, along with homages to some of the most famous renditions of those songs. W hether it be the Jackson 5’s “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” or The Drifters’ “White Christmas,” this show includes some of the most well-known pop

Christmas music from the second half of the 20th century. Along the way, the show highlights many Christmas traditions, the nostalgia and magic surrounding the season, and - in a tribute to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” traces the tidings of comfort and joy to the Nativity. “Jingle Bell Jukebox” featues high-energy dancing to tunes like “Jingle Bells” and “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”; ensemble ballads such as Amy Grant’s “Grown-

Up Christmas List” and the sacred tune “O Holy Night”; and an audience Christmas carol sing-along. The show’s creator and producer is Tyler Hoover. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit www.servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255.

grounded in the Bible,” he said. “He understands the Bible, and he can make the Bible come alive for you. When I come here on Sundays, it renews my spirit.”

Olenderski said his favorite part of Sundays is the Bible study, because Tim encourages participation. “He wants to know what we think,” he explained. “He

wants it to be interactive.” The church also sets up a table of free groceries on Sundays, including shelfstable items, meat, eggs and more through Blessings of Hope. Eventually, Tim hopes to have a building exclusively for the church, but for now, he said, the Farm Show complex is perfect. He invites anyone who is interested to check out the church, which is named for a town in Arkansas where the McCoys regularly attend church camp. “ We’re really on the ground floor, and if there’s somebody who would like to serve the Lord, we need them,” he said. “This is a great place to start and grow.” He hopes people will be inspired by the Bible to walk through the doors on a Sunday morning, noting that the apostles told others they had met the Lord and encouraged others to seek Him as well. “I’d like to say to people, ‘Come and see,’” Tim said. “Everybody is welcome here, and I’m sincere about that.” For more information on Mountain View Baptist Church, visit www.mtview baptistchurchpa.com.

The Master Gardeners of Lancaster County, a program of Penn State Extension, will co-host an event on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. for anyone interested in starting or supporting a community garden in Manheim. The purpose of the meeting is to gauge community interest. The meeting will be held at the Manheim Central Food Pantry, 334 W. Gramby St., Manheim. Since 2022, Master Gardener Sue Hynicker has been working to foster communication and resource sharing between the county’s community gardens. Typically, community gardens are started by people who want to grow their own food for a variety of reasons, such as to stretch their household budget or to have more control over how their food is produced. Often space is donated. Gardens can
