Everyone becomes a suspect while simultaneously scrambling to figure out who did it. Performances of “Clue: On Stage” are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Manheim Central High School (MCHS) auditorium at 400 E. MCHS senior Mason Bard will portray Clay Wadsworth in the Red Herring cast. “Wadsworth is the butler, and he’s kind of mysterious and the driving force of the show,” noted Mason. “It’s a really engaging play and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.” Fellow MCHS senior Luke Weaver will be Wadsworth in the Smoking Gun cast. Luke said that the extensive number of lines to memorize is one of the challenges of the role, but he enjoys bringing Wadsworth to life. “The most fun part about this role, and really with any role, is See Baron Stage pg 3

“I’ve known this house all of my life, and I’ve always wanted to live in it,” said Donna Hlavacek, referring to her home on East Ferdinand Street in Manheim. Faced in pink Indiana limestone, the mid-century Cape Cod was built in 1954 by Raymond Hollinger, the former owner of Hollinger’s Mill on South Oak Street, as a retirement residence for him and his wife. Donna grew up on South Oak Street and has fond memories of the house with the “stegosaurus wall” of stone alongside the driveway and walkway leading to the front entrance. The property will be one of nine featured on the annual Women’s Club of Manheim (WCM) Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. See Tour Of Homes pg 3

that you get to make the character your own,” continued Luke. “There’s who you’re supposed to be on paper and who you get to make them be.” Twins Nickea Metzler and Tenaya Metzler will portray Mrs. Peacock in the Red Herring and Smoking Gun casts, respectively. The MCHS seniors said that different family members will be at each of the show’s performances to watch as each sister puts her own spin on Mrs. Peacock. “She’s very batty, but she’s a politician’s wife and has trained herself to be very composed,”

said Tenaya. “It’s a lot of fun playing her bouts of hysteria,” Nickea noted. “We have a lot of fun with it and interacting with the other characters.” Nickea and Tenaya are excited about the costumes and set for the show, crediting MCHS drama director Amber Friel, assistant director Megan Adams, and creative director Kami Deppen with going above and beyond to make everything topnotch. The set will be styled to complement the characters, including a peacock room and a

mustard-colored room. Colonel Mustard will be portrayed by MCHS senior TJ Faulkner in the Red Herring cast and MCHS freshman Ben Ginder in the Smoking Gun cast. “I love playing Colonel Mustard,” commented TJ. In fact, whenever he plays the game of Clue, he always opts for Colonel Mustard. “He’s a lot of the comic relief, and he’s hysterical because of his stupidity,” TJ said. “It’s a funny play, and it will keep everyone’s attention even if they aren’t fans of the game or movie. Everyone’s doing a great job with their character.”

HANUKKAH This Jewish Man Antiochus Epiphanies was a descendant of a general in the army of Alexander the Great. He was the ruler of Syria in 164 BC. He tried to conquer Egypt, but Pharaoh sent him packing his bags for home. He was furious and tried to take his wrath out on Israel. He not only ordered a pig to be sacrificed on the altar in the Temple, but he also ordered local Levites to sacrifice pigs in their own town. In the town of Modin a Levite named Matthias refused to sacrifice a pig. He and his sons killed the Syrian captain and his soldiers. This started Israel’s successful three year rebellion against Syria. Israel was successful in their rebellion and the profaned Altar in the Temple was taken down and a new one was erected. There was only enough consecrated oil in the Temple to burn for one day. The Lord made that small amount of oil last for eight days, until the new consecrated oil was ready. It was decided that the victory and the miracle of the oil would be celebrated every year, as a testimony to the saving grace of our eternal Master and King. Jewish families light their Candelabra with the addition of one more candle each day until eight candles are lit. The candles are always lit with one special candle called the servant candle (Shamash). One hundred and sixty four years later, the most famous Jewish man that ever lived, stood in the Temple courts at the Feast of Dedication called Hanukkah. The people asked Him to tell them plainly, if He was the Messiah. He said “He and His Father are One” (John 10:30). He was the Prophet that Moses spoke about in Deutueronomy. 18:15ff. He said that “He is the light of the world” (John 8:12). “He brought light into the world but men loved darkness” (John 3:19). “He made the world but the world knows Him not” (John 1:10). “He laid his life down freely, no one could take it from Him” (John 10:18). His life was sacrificed for the benefit of all who would come to Him as Savior and Messiah. This was done according to “the set purpose and foreknowledge of His Heavenly Father” (Acts 2:23). He had to die, for The Scripture says “It is the blood that makes atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11). Messiah wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). He says to all who will listen “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28). “Arise, shine for thy light is come (Isaiah 60:1)” “Messiah is the light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel”. (Luke 2:32). Messiah said, “I am the root and the offspring of David. The bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16). Yeshua (Jesus the Messiah) is the only one who can save you from eternal damnation. Come unto Him so that you may have eternal life with Him and His Father, in their everlasting Kingdom. It does not matter whether you are Jewish or Gentile. He says to you PERSONALLY “Come to me and I will give you Eternal life with me”. “This is an iconic Manheim house, and depending on your age you’ll remember it as something different,” remarked Donna. “If you’re my age, it’s the Hollinger house. If you’re younger than me, it’s the Graybill house, and there were a few other owners in between there, too.” Reid and Inda Graybill, who founded Graybill’s Tool and Die Inc. in Manheim, were the property’s most recent residents prior to when Donna and her husband, Ken, purchased it in 2017. Ken passed away in April. Though apprehensive about being part of the holiday home tour, Donna agreed to feature her home when a friend suggested she do so in honor of Ken and his love for the holiday season. Her home’s sunroom will showcase a collection of memories Disney ornaments on the Christmas tree and other things Ken had collected with his children

The group meets monthly, sharing upper-level historic repertoire, and presents public recitals in December, April, and June. Mentors are Margaret Marsch, Bonnie Witmer, and Dora Zlatkin. On Dec. 8, members will perform piano and violin works by Bach, Handel, Chopin, Debussy, and Khachaturian, as well as a piano concerto by Mozart. The program will also include siblings Faith, Charity, and Clayton Martin performing on harpsichord, harp, and cello. They will perform historic and Christmas music in period dress. The trio is also providing music at historic sites this Christmas season, including the Ephrata Cloister, Landis Valley Museum, and Pennsbury Manor. The concert is free and open to the public. The venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.

UDS Gift Wrap Volunteers Sought Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the “S” Mall of Park City Center during all regular mall hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to provide coverage for all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours.

Proceeds from the gift wrapping project will benefit United Disabilities Services Foundation, a Lancaster-based nonprofit which provides programs and services to help people with disabilities live more independent lives in the community. Funds raised will be put to work in programs such as adult day programming, custom wheelchair seating, and United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs. The foundation is still accepting volunteers to wrap. Individuals and volunteers 14 years of age

or older from church, community, civic, or school groups or individuals are invited to register for various shifts. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or email lorispradling@hotmail.com. UDS is a nonprofit organization based in Lancaster that serves more than 50 counties throughout Pennsylvania. UDS is committed to helping seniors, veterans and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives. UDS has developed a wide variety of services

and programs that improve quality of life and expand boundaries - including transition school, care management, accessible home modifications, service dogs, custom wheelchair seating and more. Today, more than 450 employees serve seniors and people with disabilities. In 2018, UDS provided services to more than 5,000 clients, enabling them to live more independently and in control of the decisions that affect their lives. Visitors may also tour a private home, which will be decorated for Christmas. Michael Weber, a qualified geologist, will be on hand at the furnace site to talk about the various minerals that were found during the mining operation. At the furnace, the Belsnickel, a Pennsylvania German Christmas character, will visit. The Belsnickel will be portryaed by Rick Brouse of East Petersburg, who has played the role at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum for many years. The museum store will be open for business, and a local craftsman will sell handmade kitchen-related gift items such as cutting boards, cookie cutters, potholders, and wooden spoons. Craft projects

Guides will offer guided tours of the furnace throughout the day. Separate costs have been set for adults, for senior citizens and AAA members, and for youths ages 13 to 17. Cheryl Brill (left), chief operating officer of Royer’s Flowers & Gifts, recently presented a donation of $1,000 to the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, represented by Christine Gilfillan, Domestic Violence Services director. The funds are earmarked for CAP’s Domestic Violence Services program, which provides emergency shelter, counseling, legal and housing services and children’s programming for victims of domestic violence and their children. Family-owned Royer’s donates $10 to women’s charities for every purchase of its “Admiration” arrangement.

Director Jim Johnson wanted to be sure that Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) performed something unique for its first major children’s production in the Eater Theater at Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Instead of performing a show that was pegged outright for youths, he opted for an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” SSC board member Asher Johnson, who is also Jim’s son and regularly appears in SSC productions, wrote the original adaptation, “A Children’s Christmas Carol,” which is filled with Christmas carols and songs. “It’s pretty true to the Charles Dickens version and has the same characters, but we wanted something that was more tailored for younger kids,” commented Asher. A beloved holiday favorite, the tale follows embittered Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Brayton Alkinburgh, as he clings to his miserly ways and declares the joys of Christmas to be “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge’s disheartened mentality is shaken up through the course of several events, including encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - portrayed by Emma Witman, Anastasia Hess, and Teresa Moore, respectively. Zac Snyder will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee. “I

get to be the happiness of the show and spread cheer with my family,” said Zac, who lives in Columbia and attends Lancaster Catholic High School. This will be his fifth performance with SSC. Mrs. Cratchit will be portrayed by Julia Bono, who is making her SSC debut. “I love this show, and I was really interested in playing a character who is a lot older than me and who has kids,” shared Julia, a Lampeter resident and student at Lancaster Country Day School. “I think it’s really special that it’s a cast of all kids. We all get along really well, and we’re having a lot of fun with this show,” added Julia. The cast includes children ages 5 to 18 from throughout Lancaster and York counties. Additional cast members include Grayson Marz as Isabella, Teddy Best as Tiny Tim, Brennen Eshleman as Jacob Marley, Aiden Stehman as Mr. Fezziwig and The Visitor, Alexa Knapp as Mrs. Fezziwig, Liam Nornhold as Fred, and Claire Hanlon as Fred’s Wife. In the ensemble are Charis Alkinburgh, Lydia Alkinburgh, Emma Antonacci, Hayden Bires, Stella Heysek Breese, Aria Cobb, Addison DeLuca, Sydney Droege, Charlotte Evans, Aidan Fahnestock, Zoe Fahnestock, Kinsey Fries, Jane Haas, Portia Keddie, Molly Kitchen, Seth Manning, Elise Maurer, Lauren McGough, Isaac Moore, Madison

Mutterspaugh, Blake Neff, Molly Neill, Francyne Nichols, Saige Schmitt, Derian Shubert, Audrey Shultz, Alivia Wahba, and Sylvie Willing. Performances of “A Children’s Christmas Carol” are scheduled for Fridays to Sundays, Dec. 6 to 8 and Dec. 13 to 15, at the Marietta Center for the Arts. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday shows at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at

Folk Art Show from pg 1 inception more than two decades ago, explained that in the past artists were set up in the upstairs portion of the station. Now displays will extend into the lower part of the building that originally functioned as the men’s and women’s waiting rooms and ticket office in the historic station. “Architecturally, the men’s and ladies’ waiting rooms are the same; it’s just that there were spittoons on the men’s side,” noted Shaw with a laugh. In the ticket office, visitors will be able to see original accoutrements from an old Manheim schoolhouse, as well as train station memorabilia on the walls. Local author Dennis Denenberg will be on hand to sell and autograph copies of his book, “50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet!” Denenberg coauthored the book with Lorraine Roscoe, and it was a 2006 Notable Children’s Trade Book. A portion of proceeds from book sales that weekend will be donated to the historical society. In addition to Shaw, the

exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, River Rat Pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Karen Hurd, traditional tin work; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Lee Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Lynn Taylor, Kingston Pottery and Fine Ceramics. Many of the artists have devoted fans and followers from well beyond the central Pennsylvania area, and the show draws visitors from numerous states. “Last year, people were lined up two and a half hours before we opened,” Shaw recalled. In addition to perusing the original wares, people may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in

The name Chiques was selected because the new property was situated midway between the Big and Little Chiques creeks. On Easter Sunday, March 29, 1959, ground was broken for the new church. The cornerstone was laid on June 7, and the new building was dedicated on Nov. 10 of that year.

Music director Amy Rau was the first to suggest the show to Huyard. Cordell Huyard, who is direct- “I fell in love with it,” said Huyard of ing Cavod Theatre’s “The Gifts of the show, which will play at the thethe Magi” this holiday season, is ater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, amazed that the organization has at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13; not produced the musical before at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 this. “It’s perfect for our stage,” and 14; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, said Huyard. “It fits like a glove.” Dec. 8 and 15. The show has been choreographed by Stephanie Morales. The musical adaptation is based on a short story by O. Henry set in the early 1900s. The play focuses on a young husband and wife who have few funds but each wants to buy the other a special Christmas gift. The story contains an important lesson Caleb Heckman (left) as Jim and Pilisa Mackey about gift-giving (right) as Della will star in “The Gifts of the and a twist that Magi,” which will be staged at Cavod Theatre has made it a senin New Holland on Dec. 6 to 8 and 13 to 15. timental holiday

favorite. Huyard noted that this version features the music of Stephen Sondheim and mixes other stories by O. Henry into the script as subplots. “Fans of O. Henry will recognize (the tales),” said Huyard. Some of the cast members are Cavod Theatre veterans, such as Caleb Heckman as Jim, the husband. Others, including Pilisa Mackey, a Lancaster Bible College theater program graduate who plays Della, the wife, are new to Cavod. Other characters include Steve Rau as Willy, a newspaper man and narrator of the show, and Moses Mariscal as Soapy, a man who is homeless by choice and who is trying unsuccessfully to get arrested so he will not be on the streets during Christmas. A cast of characters are played by Kalor Long as the City Him and Hannah Rau as the City Her. Huyard lauded the talents of the pair, who will take turns appearing as a police officer, a French waiter, a posh store owner, and an angry woman from the Bronx. Challenges of staging the play include each cast member playing a character that is larger than life

and the complexity of the musical score. “The music is incredibly difficult, and each cast member is carrying a lot,” said Huyard, who added that the “smart, talented” cast members are on track. “They bring a wealth of experience and skills to the show,” said Huyard, adding, “The play highlights the strength of each person in the production team.” While some shows are strictly date-night fodder and others lend themselves to family fare, Huyard insists that at about 90 minutes in length, “The Gifts of the Magi” offers both. “It has beautiful moments of romance, (but) the grandchildren will love this and be laughing,” said Huyard. “The show moves quickly. There’s never a dead moment.” The production also refuses to waver from the truth behind the holiday. “The show starts off with this beautiful song about the true meaning of Christmas,” said Huyard, referencing the three kings who brought costly gifts to Jesus. “They sing a beautiful medley of ‘Gloria,’” he added. “(The song) gets audience
