Enjoy a free dinner and live Nativity BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“This is what Christ requires of us - to take care of people,” said Steph Heisey, referring to a free community meal that will be offered at Ruhl’s Church. “We help people who are in need when we do this.” The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road,

Manheim, will host a live Nativity and drive-through Christmas meal on Saturday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will feature ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. In the past, the church has hosted a Drive to Bethlehem event, but this year, only a Nativity scene will be featured. See Dinner pg 5

Fifteen years ago, Tyler Stumpf and his friend Jeff Andrews were sitting around “solving the world’s problems,” Stumpf recalled with a laugh, when they came up with an idea. “We said, ‘Let’s go for a ride on New Year’s Day,’” said the avid motorcycle rider. “A few other people heard about our plans, and we had 11 participants that first year.” The group decided to raise

money with the ride, donating the proceeds to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “I think we might have raised $400 that first year,” Stumpf said. “This event turned into much more than I ever could have expected.” He’s not kidding. Last year’s New Year’s Day ride featured the most participants ever upward of 500 bikes and 600 people - and raised more than $32,000. So far, the group has donated more than $270,000 to veterans. mas Carol” and reimagined versions of musical hits. This production is not recommended for children. It is the latest offering in Creative Works of Lancaster’s series of sock puppet film parodies, with previous shows including “Sock Puppet Psycho,” “The Sockfather,” “Silence of the Socks,” and “Jaws to the World.” Creative Works utilizes a pay what you decide ticketing model with no fixed ticket prices. “People can see Joseph and Mary with the Son of God in a straw-filled manger,” said Kris Gray, who is helping to organize the event. Event committee member Randi Myer will bring a miniature horse named Jellybean to the Nativity, with the possible addition of other animals. “This will be an opportunity for people to drive up and see what it was like in Bethlehem when baby Jesus was born,” she said. For the first hour of the event, members of the congregation will sing Christmas carols, and people are invited to park their cars and join in. For the second hour, recorded selections of Christmas music will be played. The meal is provided free of charge, although a donation box will be set up on-site for anyone who wants to give. “I hear a lot of neat stories from people when I take their reservations for the meal,” said Barb Dunmire, a member of the event committee. “People are very thankful that we do this. When we put the meal in their car to go, they are just so grateful to receive it.” Last year, the church members served 420 meals, and Gray noted

Bird club to host researchers, bird counts The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Jeff Larkin, a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, along with three of his graduate students, will present “Ornithology Research Update: Scarlet Tanagers and Ruffed Grouse.” Larkin and the graduate students will report on their research on the decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open to the public. The club will also sponsor four Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas

Bird Count, with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected have been invaluable for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Participants will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the appropriate contact person prior to the event to determine if their home is within the count circle. The local events and their contact people are as follows: Sunday, Dec. 17, Solanco, Derek Stoner, 484-723-3348 or derek stoner@hotmail.com; Saturday, Dec. 23, Lancaster, Roger Stoner, 717-393-9030; and Sunday, Dec. 31, Lititz, Ted Nichols, 717-8563851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. Additionally, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec. 23. It is designed to teach children about birding. Participants must register by calling the park at 717-295-2055. For more information, contact John Lahr, 717-205-3030 or johnlahr324@ gmail.com. Adults without kids are welcome. For more information on any LCBC events, call 717-856-3851 or 717-7252717 or visit www.lancasterbird club.org or www.facebook.com/ lancasterbirdclub.

Ephrata Cloister to offer Lantern Tours Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host Lantern Tours on Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 30. Each day, tours will leave the visitor center every half hour, with the first tour at 6 p.m. and the last tour at 8 p.m. When planning a trip nowadays, people often rely on Tripadvisor for reviews, but in the 1750s, it was word of mouth or written communication that people turned to for advice. During the Lantern Tours, attendees will hear

Ephrata Cloister Student Historians rehearse for the Lantern Tours.

New wellness center to launch The Holistic Center for Health and Well-being is a new nonprofit initiative in the community. Located at 1170 Erbs Quarry Road, Lititz, the Holistic Center for Health and Well-being’s focus is on “helping heal the whole person.” Denyse Kling is the center’s founder and executive director. The center will hold a launch party and fundraiser at the Lititz Springs Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz, on Tuesday, Dec. 19, from

5 to 7 p.m. The Holistic Center for Health and Well-being’s programs include many varieties of yoga, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Yoga Nidra, as well as Yoga for Veterans, facilitated by a Marine Corps combat veteran. Other activities include movement therapy, meditation classes, sound immersion sessions, breath work classes, personal development sessions, yoga teacher trainings, health courses led

by a naturopath, nutrition and healthy cooking programs, a Banish the Burnout program and seminars and events. Community members may also experience kirtan, a musical form of narration with a variety of instruments, reciting, and storytelling. This activity has roots in the Vedic tradition. Kling hopes to make the center an inclusive space that is accessible to everyone, including those who
