Group Offers Masks For Students, Teachers By Francine Fulton
When the “Making Face Masks in Berks group formed in March, its primary goal was to provide masks to health care workers. Members have recently shifted their focus and are now busy making masks for students, school administrators and teachers who are slated to return to school this fall. The nonprofit group was founded on March 22 when clothing designer Angela Pilat of Morgantown posted on Facebook that she needed help sewing face masks. Pilat, with the help of her daughter, Lydia, converted her design and sewing business to make and donate face masks for health care workers. Pilat was joined in her effort by Jackie Confalone, who had previously enjoyed sewing and had made clothing for herself and her children. “Angela has commercial and
professional sewing machines and had a professional setup and could zip out a ton of masks in a short amount of time, Confalone said. “I stepped in and helped, and we were meeting daily. Also joining the effort was Christine Keeny, a hair stylist who was temporarily unemployed. Together, the group made its own Facebook page and started a GoFundMe campaign. “The four of us ran the group for about two months and had daily pickups at the Kenhorst Plaza (in Reading), said Confalone. “There were companies wanting 1,500 to 2,000 masks for their employees. We were taking anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 masks to Reading Hospital per week. Soon, other sewers join the group, as well as non-sewers who were willing to cut fabric and elastic for the 100% cotton masks. “(Fabric and elastic) cutters speeded up the process.
People who cannot sew were thrilled to help, noted Confalone. As of early June, the group members had made and donated more than 25,000 face masks. In mid-June, Pilat was able to return to her design business and she began the process of shutting down production of the nonprofit. “We donated the fabric to charity, and we had a couple thousand dollars in the GoFundMe and she donated that to two children’s hospitals in Philadelphia, said Confalone. However, the group soon began receiving requests for masks from teachers who may be going back to school, along with parents requesting masks for their children or college-age students.
The group is now once again offering masks for people in need and accepting homemade mask donations. Dropoff and pickup are currently held on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the Ollie’s/BK Trading Post parking lot near the closed Fulton Bank. The GPS address is 2251 Lancaster Pike, Reading. The group offers sizes ranging from adult XL (mostly for men), regular adult and children’s masks. Those who would like a mask are asked to search for “Making Face Masks in Berks on Facebook. The Facebook page has a link to a Google form where the masks can be ordered. See Masks pg 4
Jackie Confalone, a member of the “Making Face Masks in Berks group, accepts mask donations and distributes masks to those who ordered them out of the back of her minivan on Wednesday evenings in a parking lot near Ollie’s in Reading.
CrossNet Schedules First Drive-In Dinner And Auction
MCC
By Ann Mead Ash
Meredith Dahl (left), director of CrossNet Ministries, and Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries with CrossNet, are preparing for the organization’s first Drive-In Dinner and Auction, to be held at Garden Spot Village on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
For several years, CrossNet Ministries has held an annual evening gala in the fall in the beautiful gardens at Garden Spot Village (GSV). This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers reimagined the event several times before hitting upon the idea of a Drive-In Dinner and Auction fundraiser. “We are excited to offer this safe and fun event for the community, said Meredith Dahl, director of CrossNet Ministries. “It has been a challenging season for everyone, and we are looking forward to having a fun, memorable evening. The dinner and auction will be held outside at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Sept. 19. The meal will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendee’s cars will be spaced so that they are safely socially distanced in Lot 9, which is the same lot that has
been utilized for the gala. Dahl noted that event coordinators will be present to direct people to park. According to Dahl, attendees can choose to stay in their vehicles or bring lawn chairs to sit in front of their car. She advised those who take part to dress comfortably. In the field adjacent to the lot will be a stage with an LED screen. Dahl said that the stage will be high enough to make it easy for spectators to see. In addition, attendees will be directed to tune to a specific radio setting to easily hear the event, which will include live musical entertainment. “It will be upbeat music, a mix of ’50s and some newer songs with a fun vibe, said Dahl. Appetizers; beverages, including soda and lemonade; and dinner will be served to attendees in their cars. The meal will be prepared by GSV in partnership with another food provider. Dahl noted that the goal of the menu See CrossNet pg 4
Berks Strollers Get Back To Hiking By Francine Fulton
After a break during the stay-athome order, members of the Berks Community Strollers have reunited and are once again planning local outings. The walking group welcomes community members to join during Saturday hikes planned in August and September. “We are trying our best go back to Saturday hikes. Our last (official) hike in 2020 was in the middle of March, said group member Angele Arutunian. “We had one hike (on a recent) Saturday, and 11 people showed up. So we decided to resume our hikes. She noted that during the outings participants wear masks and practice social distancing. See Berks Strollers pg 5

Contest Invites Sewists To “Make It With Wool By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with, said director Linda Siegel of Lebanon. “You can steam and mold it into shape. She noted that wool fabric is not always derived from sheep’s wool, and it can be used for more than heavy winter coats. “I enjoy finding lightweight wools I can wear year-round, Linda said. “I made a light wool crepe black dress that I can
wear with sandals in the summer and feel comfortable. Linda entered the Make It With Wool contest for the first time as a 4-H member in 1972. She still has the suit made from fabric striped with acid blue, teal green, and cream. “There was a lot of competition, she recalled. “A lot of people were sewing in the ’70s. Home sewing has declined in popularity since then, but it is seeing a resurgence. Linda has been actively promoting sewing by serving as a 4-H leader for the past two decades. Additionally, she has encouraged the sewing passion of her daughter, Rachel. In about 2002 at age 13, Rachel won the state 4-H fashion revue with a Melton wool coat and subtly striped pants and then won the state Make It With Wool contest with the same outfit. That made Rachel eligible to compete at the national Make It With Wool event. See Wool pg 5

CrossNet from pg 1 will be to provide fun food with upscale flair. Amy Marburger, photographer and food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, will move from car to car to take photos of the occupants. During the meal, there will be opportunities to bid on silent auction items in an online format. The silent auction will feature up to 60 items including gift cards, a service that provides a different type of meat each month, and monthly bouquets from a local florist, among others. “Carl (Edwards, director of development and ministries), has been doing a good job finding fun and creative items,” said Dahl. Following dinner, a live auction featuring local auctioneer Patrick Morgan, who has donated his services for the event, will be held. “We will have 10 big items for the live auction,” said Dahl, who listed a beach house stay, a hot air balloon ride, a cabin in the woods, and locally made furniture among those to go up for bids. Dahl noted that an update on the efforts of ministry during the pandemic, including a video, will be featured following the live auction. “All of the funds raised will go directly to supporting families and individuals in the ELANCO community, including food and financial assistance,” said Dahl, who noted that she hopes to raise $55,000 for the work of the ministry. CrossNet Ministries offers a variety of programs to the community, including a youth center, social services programs, Power Packs, a nutrition center, a summer lunch program, after-school programs for elementary-age students, and more. The ministry currently operates from three locations on Franklin Street in New Holland. Dahl encouraged area residents to look into attending the drive-in and auction, saying, “Thank you for considering partnering with us to make an impact.” Tickets, which will be based on two people per car with an extra charge for additional riders, may be purchased by calling 717-355-2454 or by visiting www.elancocross.org.

Masks from pg 1 “I drive down to Ollie’s, open the trunk of my minivan and people can drop off masks and we hand out masks to people who have placed orders,” said Confalone. The masks are free, but donations are accepted. Donations are used to buy fabric. Confalone noted that the sewers and fabric cutters enjoy feeling productive, which was especially true during the stay-at-home order. “A lot of the ladies who are sewing (masks) love to sew, and some just began sewing when the pandemic came,” said Confalone. “For me, it was great to sit down and sew again. I forgot how much I enjoyed it. (Masking masks) is not hard, and it’s very relaxing. It gave us something to do during the pandemic when we were homebound.” Confalone shared that making the masks was also a way to gain new friends. “Angela is someone I would have never met in my everyday life,” she remarked. “The friends we made and the relationships that have been built over making these masks is just as important as the actual work of making the masks.” For more information about the group, readers may visit www.facemasksinberks.com or email facemasksinberks@gmail.com.

“She didn’t place there, but she learned, Linda said. “From then on, she sewed with wool in 4-H and challenged herself. Before she turned 25 and matriculated into the adult age division, Rachel competed at the national event seven times. As an adult, she has had one outfit win and two others place. “Rachel got to see a lot of the country that way, Linda said. “Sometimes she knew who the judges were, like the year she was in the elevator with (television sewing instructor) Sandra Betzina and (couture sewing expert) Claire Shaeffer was a judge. At least six of Linda’s 4-H students have competed nationally, and she has been a state winner twice. She accepted the position of state director this year after the previous director, Tammy Hemmerly, moved to Florida. “I enjoy organizing things (and) helping people learn new things. I hope I can get more people interested in working with wool, Linda commented, adding that she hopes to get more youths involved. “I encourage people to try it, even if it’s just a simple skirt or a knitted garment that makes them happy, Linda commented. “Don’t choose (a pattern) beyond your skill level. Start with what you’ve made (before) and add a few new skills. Linda recommended buying goodquality fabric that is more forgiving, such as flannel or a light or medium tweed, in colors that the sewist enjoys or complements their skin tone. Fasteners should be appropriate - e.g., an invisible zipper is most likely not appropriate for a heavier wool - and the seams should have some kind of finish. To avoid creating a shine on the fabric, always use a press cloth. Towels wrapped around rolled-up newspapers can be used in place of a sleeve roll when pressing curved portions of a garment. The contest is open to anyone age 8 and older. All participants must select, construct, and model their own garments unless entering the “made for others category. All garments must have been completed in the current year. Every fashion fabric or yarn used must be at least 60% wool or specialty wool fiber, which includes alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna. There is a cost to participate; however, every participant will receive 1.5 yards of wool fabric and a variety of sewing notions such as pressing hams and books on tailoring. See Wool pg 6

The Woman’s Club of Birdsboro will not host its annual car show, which was scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20. The car show committee and the board of directors decided the difficulty to socially distance and provide food and entertainment that spectators have grown to expect was too much of a risk for all involved. The club asks that its sponsors continue to support the club as it plans the 2021 car show, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021. Club members are hoping to resume their regular meetings on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month from September to May at 7 p.m. in the Sunday school building at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Second and Washington streets, Birdsboro. New
