Chorus Spreads Holiday Cheer, Seeks New Members By Francine Fulton

As part of an annual holiday tradition, members of the Ringing Hills Chorus helped the community celebrate the season by offering performances in December. The group, composed of 22 members, performed a cappella Christmas carols and holiday music at Keystone Villa in Douglassville, for the Scattered Seeds Garden Club at the Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern and on the Polar Express Colebrookdale Holiday Train tour in Boyertown. “It was a busy December,” said Rosemary Spiro, who has been a chorus member for more than 20 years. Resolve To Make A Difference Local Organizations Welcome Volunteers, Donations By Francine Fulton

With the arrival of the new year, many people make resolutions to make positive changes in their lives. Representatives of local nonprofit organizations hope that people will resolve to volunteer in 2019, donating their time and talents. People are invited to donate tangible items as well. The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year.

For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor, readers may contact Debbie Rikess, adult tutoring program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-280-2618. More information about the OIC is available at www.ccoic.org or www.facebook. com/ChescoOIC. The Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and household goods to people in need, is seeking volunteers to help sort through donations at its Downingtown warehouse. The organization is also in need of donations of quality used furniture. Those who have furniture to donate to CWP are asked to contact the agency in advance by visiting www.communitywarehouseproject.com. Especially needed are single beds with bed frames. activity of the chorus, which also takes part in regional competitions. New singers are always welcome, and prospective members may attend an upcoming rehearsal. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 6:45 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 1188 Benjamin Franklin Highway, Douglassville. “We invite people to come as a guest and just get up on the risers and sing with us,” said Spiro. “We provide sheet music. If they think it’s fun and they want to become a member, then they have to audition.” Once accepted into the chorus, members pay yearly dues to participate. Spiro explained that the singers are placed together by voice style to achieve the unique barbershop harmony sound. “With a cappella music, (you not only have to) sing your own part, you have to hold it against three other parts. very accomplished,” noted Holloway. “She has performed with groups at St. Joseph’s in Downingtown and at Bishop Shanahan High School.” Holloway said that the patriotic concert was particularly popular when it was performed by the choir. “Of all of the (concerts) we ever did, this is the one we did the most and this one received such audience appreciation,” she noted. “It touches on so many aspects of music, especially the salute to the military.” Concerts will be free, but freewill offerings will be received in support of first responders and Operation Troop Appreciation (OTA), a nonprofit organization founded by Coatesville Area High School graduate Kristen Querriera, Holloway’s daughter. OTA provides “wish list” items to military members serving abroad. “We sang for that charity for several years and raised lots of money because people were so (supportive) of what our military was doing,” Holloway said.

She added that the upcoming spring concerts will also benefit David’s Drive 831, a local veterans support organization. Holloway hopes that local singers will consider joining the choir and taking part in the upcoming performances. “We thought it would be nice to let people know that they can sing with us if they desire,” she added. “It would be great to get some new faces.” For more information, prospective singers may contact McFalls at 610-316-9765 or Holloway at 610-656-4054. Pictured on front: The Brandywine Area Community Choir and director Steve McFalls will come back together again for encore performances of “America: A Pilgrim’s Prayer, A Patriot’s Dream.” Rehearsals will begin on Jan. 9 at Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church, Glenmoore.

Although members of the Brandywine Area Community Choir have not performed together since 2013 since the retirement of director Steve McFalls, the group has decided to sing together once again. McFalls has agreed to come out of retirement to lead the group, which will perform its signature piece, “America: A Pilgrim’s Prayer, A Patriot’s Dream.” The choir will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 1648 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Glenmoore. All local singers are encouraged to participate. “There are no auditions; (the choir is) for people who like to sing,” said choir member Carol Holloway. “It’s been a number of years since we have come together, and it’s an opportunity for those who have heard us sing before and want to become part

of the group.” Rehearsals will continue through March. Those who attend the Jan. 9 rehearsal will be provided with sheet music and list of upcoming meetings. Performances will be held in late March and early April at the Forks of the Brandywine Church, St. Joseph’s Church in Downingtown, the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and Freedom Village at Brandywine retirement community in Coatesville. Plans also call for veterans from the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center to be bused to one of the venues. Holloway explained that the cantata includes early American songs, hymns and a salute to the military. “It follows music through the early founding of our country, so there’s some folk music, patriotic music and a salute to each branch of the armed services,” she said. “We end with faith music.” The group will be accompanied on piano by Jane Hall. “She is

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced it is investing $291 million to build or improve community infrastructure and essential services for 761,000 residents in 18 states and Puerto Rico. USDA is investing in 41 projects through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program. The funding helps rural small towns, cities, and communities make infrastructure improvements and provide essential facilities such as

schools, libraries, courthouses, public safety facilities, hospitals, colleges and day care centers. In Pennsylvania, six projects have been funded through this program, including one in Chester County. North Coventry Township will use a $524,440 loan to provide additional financing to help construct a public works building and salt shed on a 22-acre parcel owned by the township. More than 100 types of

projects are eligible for Community Facilities program funding. Eligible applicants include municipalities, public bodies, nonprofit organizations, and federally and staterecognized Native American tribes. Applicants and projects must be in rural areas with a population of 20,000 or less. Loan amounts have ranged from $10,000 to $165 million. For more information, readers may visit www.rd.usda.gov.

Volunteer Opportunities from pg 1

Henry’s Helping Paws Program, the initiative founded by state Sen. Andy Dinniman and his wife, Margo, to keep people and their pets together, is now delivering free dog and cat food, along with vital veterinary medical services, to more local senior citizens in need and their pets. Recently, Dinniman was joined by his rescue poodle, Jagger, and representatives from the Pennsylvania Veterinary Foundation (PVF) to make the first delivery of dog and cat food to the Coatesville Area Senior Center. Named for Henry, the Dinniman family’s standard poodle that died in December 2014, Henry’s Help-

To learn more, readers may contact Donna Kueny at 610436-4445 or dkueny@mhp hope.org. More information, including a volunteer application, is also available at www.compeerchesco.org. The mission of Animal House Project (AHP), which operates the Chester County Pet Food Pantry, is to keep companion pets at home and out of shelters by providing donated pet food and pet care services to families in financial need. The community is invited to contribute to the effort by donating dry and canned pet food. Donations can be brought to the pantry, 1055 S. Hanover St., Suite 1, Pottstown, and placed in the collection bin. AHP is also seeking volunteers willing to provide assistance during pet food distribution days. ing Paws Fund was launched in conjunction with Meals on Wheels of Chester County in 2016. Dinniman said he came up with the idea for a mobile food pantry when he heard about senior citizens and disabled residents on low or fixed incomes who are homebound and struggle to afford adequate food, pet care items, and veterinary medical services for their pets. According to Dinniman, besides keeping people and their pets together in their homes, the program also aims to take the burden off rescue organizations that are overwhelmed with surrendered animals. Dr. Tom Garg of Hope Veterinary Specialists worked with Dinniman to develop the program and assists the PVF in running the program. Henry’s Helping Paws Program currently delivers pet food to several dozen senior citizens who are homebound or lack transportation. The program is administered by the PVF with the help of donations from PetSmart Charities. Last year, the program began deliveries of pet food and care items to the Phoenixville Senior Center to meet the need of local seniors in feeding and caring for their dogs and cats. Pet

health care events are scheduled to take place in the 2019 in both Coatesville and Phoenixville. This year, Dinniman and PVF announced they are not only expanding Henry’s Helping Paws to serve additional senior centers in Chester County, but they are also expanding its scope to include health care vouchers that can be used at designated veterinary hospitals and mobile veterinary practices. Seniors in need, identified by the senior centers and/or Meals on Wheels, will be eligible to receive a voucher, valued at $250, to cover costs for their pet’s health care at Pennsylvania Veterinary Association designated hospitals. Participants whose pets require more extensive medical treatment can have their veterinarian request additional assistance from PVF’s Last Chance program. Pet food, care items, and veterinary services for Henry’s Helping Paws Fund are funded by private and corporate donors through the PVF, the charitable arm of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association. Both Meals on Wheels and the senior centers distribute the food to the participants. In addition, representatives from local senior centers, senior housing facilities, and other nonprofits identify eligible homebound pet owners in need. does take a lot of practice,” she said. “We sing four-part a cappella. The lead is the melody line. The bass is lower and considered a second melody. The high part is the tenor and the fourth part is baritone, which actually makes the barbershop sound.” The Ringing Hills Chorus is a member of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women who sing barbershop harmony and promote the musical style through education, competition and performance. “There are some other a cappella groups that are related to churches, but we belong to the international organization and we go to competitions,” explained Spiro. “(Sweet Adelines International) has choruses in places like Sweden and England.” In May, the Ringing Hills Chorus, under the direction of Linda Beaver, won the Most Improved Chorus Award during a regional competition held in Hershey that included choruses from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Spiro said that group members have performed at churches, hospitals, retirement homes and more. They also sang the national anthem at the Reading Fighthin’ Phils and Philadelphia Phillies baseball games. “ We are not professional; these are everyday people who like to sing,” Spiro said, noting that members are of various age groups. “The majority are older women, but we have women in their 20s and 30s as well.” Group members are from Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties. “It’s a very widespread geographical area that people come from,” Spiro said. “About 40 percent of the chorus comes from Pottstown, Phoenixville and Douglassville. The rest come from all over the place, like Leesport, West Chester and Kimberton.” Spiro added that the barbershop style is unique because it is entirely vocal music. Only a pitch pipe is used to help the singers find their opening notes. “You memorize your music and learn a tune by ear that’s why we practice each week,” she said with a smile. “If you like this kind of music, it is so much fun.” For more information about the chorus, readers may visit www.ringinghillschorus.org or search for “Ringing Hills Chorus” on Facebook.

The show will include more than 12 pieces, several based on the theme of moving from darkness to light and focusing on letting God lead the battles. “There will also be lighthearted pieces that have a joyful spirit (danced) to a worship song or an instrumental,” Hertzog said. In addition to Christian themes, the show will include a duet that is about the struggles of marriage - specifically issues of stagnation and rejuvenation. For the majority of working professionals, finding quality time to spend with loved ones can be a delicate balancing act. But working parents do not have to wait until retirement to enjoy being in the company of their families. With some fine tuning, anyone can find ways to spend more time with their children, spouse, extended families and friends. Families may consider eating dinner together every night. Dining together enables everyone to be a part of each other’s day and discuss important issues facing the family. Family members should avoid activities that

Thanks to record-breaking donations of deer meat from Pennsylvania hunters, generous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth. Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991. The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations. With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free. During the 2017-18 season,

a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the commonwealth. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event. The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters. HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation

and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state. HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program. Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Pennsylvanians can also donate money to the Buck for the Pot campaign, which supports HSH. For more information on Hunters Sharing the Harvest, readers may visit www.share deer.org. The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County (HPTBC) will present its first “Twelfth Night Revelries” event on Saturday, Jan. 5, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the White Horse Inn, located in Old Morlatton Village. The community is invited to celebrate the conclusion of the Yuletide season and begin the new year at the celebration, which will feature food, music and dancing. The 1762 White Horse Inn will be decked out in with natural decorations, including greenery and holly. The Amity Colonial Dancers will perform at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Musician Dave Kline will be on hand to sing and play his lute-guitar and recite a wassail (punch) toast. Mulled cider and various holiday treats will be served. According to HPTBC officials, Twelfth Night is an ancient celebration in the early Anglo-Saxon tradition that evolved to mark the coming of the Epiphany and the conclusion of the 12 days of Christmas. The local celebration will be similar to the way the event was observed in olden times and is still celebrated in England, Germany and parts of the United States. An admission fee will be charged per person. The GPS address for the White Horse Inn is 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville. For more information, readers may contact event organizer Sue Speros, program and special events coordinator for the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department, at firecracker32@verizon.net or 610-777-7567. More information is also available at www.historic preservationtrust.org and by searching for “Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County” on Facebook. The snow date for the event is Saturday, Jan. 12. Weatherrelated updates will be posted on the website and Facebook page.
