SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Making a resolution to volunteer BY FRANCINE FULTON

Sharing good news with the community BY FRANCINE FULTON

There was no shortage of good news that was shared in the Community Courier in 2023. Readers were introduced to charitable people in the community, and they learned about special events and activities by nonprofit groups, churches and school students.

In 2023, readers met Adah Lake of Morgantown, a Twin Valley Middle School student who founded Kindness Blooms, which provides free bouquets of freshly picked flowers from the family’s backyard to community members. The flowers are displayed on a flower stand in from of the family home. Adah gave away more than 30 bouquets See Good news pg 5

The OIC Adult Tutoring Program utilizes volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills.

To l e a r n m o re , v i s i t w w w .mentalhealthpartnerships.org/ compeer-chester-county. The Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), headquartered at the Chester County Librar y in Exton, is

currently seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills. Tutors are required to commit to working with a student three hours per week, which is usually covered in two 90-minute sessions.

“There’s more demand for character coaches than there are volunteers,” said Ben Swarr, director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Berks County, who works with athletes in Twin Valley and Governor Mifflin school districts. Swarr is also a former character coach for Cocalico High School wrestling. “We are looking for volunteers and for coaches willing to have character coaches (help out),” added FCA’s Kyle Martin, who works with students at LampeterStrasburg, Conestoga Valley,

and Solanco high schools. Adam Burns, FCA area representative with Pequea Valley and Ephrata high schools, noted that the job of a character coach is to serve the coaching staff team in any way he or she can, and that a volunteer need not be proficient in a sport to be a character coach. Character coaches are asked to aid the head coach with a focus on social and emotional development of student-athletes. Objectives include encouraging athletes, working to create a positive culture, and helping to develop leadership characteristics in athletes. The first year See Character coaches pg 2

nlike a typical resolution that can quickly be forgotten, a commitment to volunteer in the new year is a decision that can make a lasting impact in the community. Many local nonprofit organizations are in need of volunteers who are willing to help them continue their important work. Among the agencies in need of volunteers is Compeer Chester County, which pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. A Compeer volunteer is asked to make a commitment to meet with his or her friend for a minimum of four hours each month for one year. “We are still in need of both male and female volunteers, as we have a waitlist for both,” said Donna Kueny, program manager. According to Compeer, a person with mental health challenges can benefit from time spent with a friend, which has been shown to increase self-esteem and reduce loneliness. Compeer volunteers, who receive training, may choose their friends based on shared interests and geographic location. Compeer volunteers and friends may meet for coffee or dinner or attend a sporting event. With the end of the pandemic, Compeer Chester County has retur ned to offer ing group events during the year. “We have returned to in-person events, and in 2023, we had a pizza and bowling party, a summer picnic and a holiday luncheon,” noted Kueny. Compeer is a pro gram of Mental Health Partnerships.

of serving usually involves building relationships, followed by working to develop leadership skills. “If the door opens to spiritual conversation, that’s awesome, but the sole purpose is to serve,” added Burns. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for ELANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with an all-male coaching staff,”

explained Burns. “(Her role) opens doors for girls when they’re going through stuff. She is there to be on the bench and develop relationships.” Burns recalled that one of his first experiences as a character coach for the Pequea Valley baseball team was to oversee six students who needed to complete schoolwork to be academically eligible to play. “We would have had to forfeit three games the following week because we would not have had enough players (if the work was not completed),” Burns explained. Martin noted that his experience has included working through emotions

with a student who was benched by a coach due to a class disruption. He has also worked on character development with team leaders. “The way you react to things on the field can change anyone’s perspective,” he said, noting that in one game an opposing team player made an inappropriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “ We don’t want to emotionally react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FC A volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship

strateg y,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people for resources and advice.” Burns added that character coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. FC A has chapters in nearly ever y L ancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. Rikess explained that the majority of students on the OIC waiting list are English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Others are GED/ A dult B asic Education students. “When a student comes into the program, they are given a test to determine their level and asked what their specific goals are for working with a tutor,” she said. “They may want to learn English to get a better job; obtain US citizenship; talk with their children’s teachers,

Christmas was a little brighter and warmer thanks to the efforts of the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP). Dur ing its re g ular monthly food distribution on Dec. 13, 712 clients were provided food, and more than 900 brand-ne w toys were given out for the children of the pantry’s clients. Families also had the opportunity to pick out free coats to wear this winter. Additionally, the HBFP held its annual holiday food distribution on Dec. 16, during which 300 families received holiday dinners. Additional toys and coats were also given out that day. “On Dec. 16, (we provided) a turkey dinner with all the side dishes, a pie for each family, produce and fruit and (gave out) another round of toys and coats,” reported Ken Ross, HBFP board chair, noting that the new toys and new and gently used coats were gathered from the community as part of a toy and coat drive held earlier in December. In addition to the regular pantry volunteers, members of the Pegasus Fastpitch Softball Team packed the pantry’s nonperishables for the holiday food giveaway. They

also sorted 10 bins of food donated by the community. The HBFP, located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, holds two distributions each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The food is distributed in a drive-through format. “ We h av e n i n e fo o d stations - nonperishables, produce, fr uit, meat, bread, desserts, snacks, dairy and laundry detergent/large juices,” Ross explained. “Families then leave their cars for a flea market, a clothing van, to choose other bulk foods and (take advantage) all of the resources who are on-site, including medical, legal or employment (agencies).” For example, representatives from the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network and CareerLink were on hand during the Dec. 13 distribution. The HBFP also offers personal care items, special foods for diabetics and the Under 5 Kids Program, which provides highly specialized foods, books, baby

formula and clothing for children. Ross said that the pantry has been required to expand its efforts over the past two years because of an increase in clients. He cites the high cost of food and heating oil as some of the causes of the increase. The pantry also serves senior citizens who are living on a fixed income. “On Wednesday, Dec. 13, we saw 195 families and nearly 700 people - the highest we’ve ever seen,” he noted. “We’ve also been averaging about 40 home deliveries each month to homebound individuals.” Ross noted that the pantry receives thank you

letters and texts from the families it ser ves. One Elverson client recently wrote, “Dear Generous Souls: I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love, food, supplies and more that have made an enormous impact on our lives. Your hearts are enormous and felt closely.” For more information about the HBFP, visit www .honeybrookfoodpantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. Mobile printing available at Berks libraries Library users can now easily print items straight from their laptop or mobile device at any Berks County Public Libraries location thanks to a new software program called Princh. Local Berks County libraries are the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown. For years, all libraries in Berks County have offered cost-efficient printing services by signing into a library computer with a library card. With Princh, anyone with a photo or document on their mobile device can submit a print order to the library by scanning a QR code, downloading the Princh app or

utilizing a browser link from within the library. According to Jeff Smilko, technology coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries, users can now print from their library through this stream-lined method without needing to connect to a library computer first. Smilko noted that this way of printing may be new for some patrons, but Princh offers a more convenient printing method that can be done with just a few simple steps. For more information on how to print with Princh, stop by either library or visit www.berkslibraries .org/princh.

Volunteer from pg 3

Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines, 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown, also has many volunteer opportunities. Ryerss, which provides a home to rescued and retired horses, is in need of volunteers who would like to work in the barn. Duties include cleaning and mucking stalls, cleaning and filling water pails and troughs, grooming horses and bringing horses in and out of the barn. For those without any horse-related experience, there are other volunteer op p or tuni t ies as well, such as working in the site’s gift shop, answering phones and completing g e n e ra l o f f i c e d u t i e s . Volunteers at Ryerss do gardening, give tours to visitors and help at special fundraising events such as the site’s open house, Family Fun Day and Blessing of the Animals. Prospective volunteers are asked to complete an application and a required background check. Complete details are available at www.ryerssfarm.org/ volunteer.
