Food Pantry Provides Help For The Holidays BY FRANCINE FULTON

Christmas was a little brighter for many local families in need thanks to the efforts of the volunteer-run Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP). During the distribution on Dec. 9, the pantry gave away 400 toys for the children of its registered clients and 150 coats for clients and their children. In addition, a holiday turkey

distribution took place on Dec. 19. During the pantry’s distribution on Dec. 23, additional toys were given out just in time for Christmas, as well as new coats, gloves, hats and scarves for children and adults. A free flea market was set up offering household items, baby items and more, and Anchored Ministries was on hand at the pantry with its mobile clothing trailer. See Food Pantry pg 4

Following the annual Honey Brook Borough Police Deparment toy drive, Chief of Police Calvin Wilson delivered toys, as well as Christmas turkey dinners with all the trimmings, to 12 local families in need. A record number of toys were collected this year.

Honey Brook Police Distribute Christmas Meals, Toys hanks to the generosity of Honey Brook Borough area residents, the annual Honey Brook Borough Police Department (HBBPD) Christmas toy drive was a success, providing toys, as well as holiday meals for local families in need. The community was invited to donate new, unwrapped toys and place them in bins at local sites from Nov. 16 through Dec. 18. The toys were wrapped by borough volunteers in preparation for distribution day on Dec. 23, when Chief of Police Calvin Wilson delivered the toys to 12 local families along with a Christmas turkey dinner with all the trimmings. “Despite the many challenges we

The HBBPD also received monetary donations from the Honey Brook American Legion and local residents, as well as in-kind donations of turkeys and packing boxes from RV Industries. “The generosity in our small town is heartwarming. The HBBPD is so proud to serve such a caring and compassionate community, Jenzano added. “This year, in spite of all its trials and tribulations, has brought out the best in people, and we certainly have witnessed it this Christmas in Honey Brook Borough.

offset the medical needs of the companion pets that we feed, she explained. “In addition, we are now actively looking for additional donations to add to the Phillies grant to help offset the costs. In the beginning, we will be offering the grant to pantry clients, and (we) hope (that) with more monetary donations, we can expand to nonpantry clients. Yannessa noted that the pantry is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. Pet food distributions take place at the pantry’s location in North Coventry Township at 1055 S. Hanover St., Pottstown, on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Because of the pandemic, the distribution is now a drivethrough format. In addition, an outdoor bin is located at the site for those who would like to drop off donations of dog and cat food. In the holiday letter, Yannessa also noted how important it is for families to be able to keep their companion pets. “Pets are our family. They give us unconditional love and companionship, Yannessa stated. “They comfort us when we are sick and alone. They nudge us to take them for walks even though we may be tired, but it is good for our health. They defeat loneliness for many of our seniors and bring comfort to our returning military veterans that suffer from PTSD. Animals have the magical ability to bring out the best in us as human beings. For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www.animalhouseproject .org or www.facebook.com /AnimalHouseProject1, call 484-558-0467 or email info@animalhouseproject.org. Animal House Project has scheduled its third annual golf tournament for Friday, July 23, at Honeybrook Golf Club. Those interested in sponsoring the event may contact Yannessa.

Many families have chosen to display a live Christmas tree this season, which means more trees will be disposed of after the holidays. However, people are encouraged not to throw their real Christmas tree into the trash. Rather, trees can be reused or recycled in other ways, such as for mulch or to create a bird feeder. After all decorations, hooks, garland and tinsel strands have been removed, homeowners can place the tree in their backyards for the birds. “My favorite way to recycle your real tree is as a bird feeder,” said Dawn White, education director at the Green Valleys Association at Welkinweir. “You can lay the tree on (the ground) or stand the tree in the ground and decorate it

with strung peanuts, popcorn or cranberries to attract a variety of birds.” People may make additional edible “ornaments” for the tree. “You can make pinecone bird feeders with peanut butter or vegetable shortening rolled in birdseed, then hang them on the tree,” White said. Other options include adding fresh orange slices, suet cakes and strings of unsweetened cereal such as Cheerios. All these items will attract birds, which can sit in the branches for shelter. Ornaments can be replaced as needed throughout the winter months to provide a good food supply for all visiting birds to eat. In addition, Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means their branches may be removed and chipped. “You can mulch your tree to enrich

your soil for spring plants,” White noted. Another suggestion provided by the National Christmas Tree Association is to sink the tree into a local lake or pond because trees can create a safe space and feeding area for fish. People should always check with local officials or the landowner for permission. Locally, as part of the second annual Blue Marsh Lake Trees for the Fishes event, trees may be dropped off through Tuesday, Jan. 12, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drop-off locations include State Hill Boat Launch, 599 Brownsville Road, Sinking Spring, and Church Road Access Area, Old Church Road, Bernville. Trees will be used for aquatic habitat enhancement and other wildlife habitat resources. For more information, read-

National History Day (NHD) is a year-round academic program for sixththrough 12th-grade students across the nation. The Chester County History Center (CCHC) is the official coordinator for NHD in Chester and Delaware counties. Each year, over 2,000 local students participate at their schools, and 300 advance to compete at the regional or county level. Many continue on to the state and national competitions. CCHC invites individuals to compete in, judge, or sponsor NHD in support of history education. Southeastern Pennsylvania NHD takes place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The 2021 contest theme is “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” Readers who are interested in participating in NHD 2021 as a student, teacher, judge, or volunteer or who are seeking more information on NHD classroom outreach and NHD teacher resources may contact Lindsay Campellone at nhdcoord @chestercohistorical.org.

ers may search for “2nd Annual Trees for the Fishes” on Facebook. Some areas in eastern Pennsylvania, including Berks County, offer tree recycling programs. Readers may contact their local municipalities to see if the service is offered. For next year, homeowners are encouraged to think about purchasing a tree with a rooted ball that can be planted in the yard after Christmas.

Food Pantry from pg 1 In his holiday newsletter, Ken Ross, HBFP board chair, thanked those who held food, coat and toy drives in the community as well as the volunteers for helping to support the pantry’s mission, which is to “serve local families in need while empowering them toward independence.” “Thanks to the work of our incomparable volunteer team, we have not missed one distribution date and actually added more remote distributions and served more emergency needs than ever before,” he stated. The HBFP is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Like other food distribution centers, the pantry now uses a drive-through format. Additional programs by the pantry include a Weekend Kids’ Backpack Program, which offers food for 60 children, and a Nutritional Supplement Program for children up to age 3, which currently provides special foods, diapers and supplies to 58 families. This past summer, the pantry’s “Garden for Life” program included two community gardens - one at the Honey Brook Borough Park and the other at the Honey Brook Township Building. The program provided more than 200 pounds of fresh produce for clients during food pantry distributions twice a month from May through November. Between distribution days, clients and volunteers were also invited to pick produce at the gardens as needed. Eight local gardeners also contributed to the program by donating produce from their home gardens. The program will continue next spring. Community members are invited to help out the pantry by donating nonperishable food items. Items will be accepted on the day of the next scheduled distribution, Wednesday, Jan. 13, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Food items most needed include spaghetti noodles and sauce, other pasta and pasta meals, rice, boxed macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, soup, canned fruit, tuna and canned stew. Monetary donations are also being accepted at www.honey brookfoodpantry.org/donate. For more information about the HBFP, readers may visit www.honey brookfoodpantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. For up-to-date information about food distributions, readers may call 610-273-6102 or contact Ross at KRoss1414@aol.com.
