According to church member and event organizer Becky Bennington, this year’s dinner was one of the largest ever held at the church. “We had 110 register to attend, including volunteers,” she noted. The event began with a time of fellowship that included snacks such as cheese and crackers. Then, attendees See Hopewell UMC pg 3

well as puzzle books, CDs and snacks. The collection of items was valued at $28,000, according to David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. The Turner family started DD831 following the sudden passing of David Turner Jr. from a suspected cardiac arrhythmia in December 2009. David worked at the Coatesville VA and had a desire to help veterans in need. “David’s wish was to help veterans that needed assistance at the VA when he worked here. He never had the chance to help them, so when he passed, we decided to continue his wish of helping veterans,” Turner said. “It’s a community organization, and David See Veterans pg 3

Back in the early fall, Steve Loewen, founding member of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), saw on social media that the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, home of the historic Ironstone Ranch, would be open to the public on Columbus Day. “I saw advertised that the Star Barn could be visited by car (for a fee),” said Loewen, who was excited about the opportunity. “So I went, and I was totally blown away by what (property owner) David Abel has done,” said Loewen. “They were showing a video about the Star Barn, and you could see the detail and the meticulous restoration to keep the National Historic designation.” Loewen recalled that Myrtle Tremblay painted a rendition of the Star Barn while living in New Holland. Tremblay, who taught herself to draw as a youth in Michigan, eventually attended a number of institutions in Chicago and New York to study art before moving to New Holland in 1952. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. The NHAHS Museum has a number of her pieces, which were displayed during 2019. Loewen knows David, who owns the 275-acre Stone Gables Estate with his wife, Tierney, through business connections. Following his visit to the village, Loewen called David’s assistant to arrange a presentation in New Holland. A video presentation on the history and restoration of the Star Barn and the outbuildings surrounding it will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be given by Roberta Freeman, public affairs specialist, and Gail Shane, director of sales and marketing, from Stone Gables Estate and the Star Barn Complex. The Star Barn had been an icon in Lower Swatara Township, where it was built in the late 1800s by John Motter, a bank president and hotel owner, who also raised horses and was the provider of horses for the Union Army. The Gothic Revival-style barn bears testament to his wealth and prestige, but according to the Abels, the barn was also designed to honor God. David has called barns the cathedrals of the countryside. Often the largest structures in open spaces, barns could be designed intentionally to attract attention and embody symbolism. The windows of the Star Barn and several outbuildings are shaped like church windows, long and slender, and curving to a point at the top. The five-point star is a sign of hope and the prosperity of the nation. Each building has a cupola shaped like a spire pointing to God. When Route 283 was opened in 1971, both locals and visitors to Pennsylvania became acquainted with the unusual barn and buildings decorated with a star motif that could easily be seen from the highway. In addition to the building of the highway, much in Lower Swatara has changed in the last 60 years, and the Star Barn property, which had become a dairy farm, was languishing after 1985. When Tierney first asked David about moving the barn, he told her there was no way it could happen, but Tierney sought God’s will in the matter and eventually an agreement to move the barn was reached. However, relocating the barn and restoring it so that it was maintained within eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places was no small task. The Abels did not shrink from the unique job of preserving the national treasure. Modern craftsmanship to make

the buildings safe, compliant, and convenient for modern use brought together local restorers, builders, masons, and more. The barn and its outbuildings were carefully dismantled and moved from Middletown to their new home at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. A pond was created on the property in correlation to where one was located at the original Star Barn site. A spring house, milk house, double privy, and loafing shed - which had been torn down during the construction of Route 283 - were also re-created. In July 2017, a celebration was held to mark the completion of the task. Readers who wish to know more about the historical society may visit http://nh

historical.com or search for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook. Pictured on front: Steve Loewen (left) and Don Horning (right), both representatives of the New Holland Area Historical Society, display a print of the Star Barn painting by Myrtle Tremblay. Horning was instrumental in bringing the Tremblay collection to the society’s museum. The Star Barn will be the subject of a video presentation at Garden Spot Village on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

Transportation Management Association of Chester County employees delivered hundreds of gifts for veterans at the Coatesville VA on Dec. 17. guides us through.” As part of a separate effort that is in its third year, Hellertown resident Andrea Feher organized a gift drive via Facebook - collecting hundreds of gifts for the 72 veterans in the Community Living Center and Hospice at the Coatesville VA. The gifts were delivered on Dec. 3 during a luncheon event. Feher worked closely with the VA staff in the long-term residential care units to find out what the veterans would like to receive. She then reached out to her donation network to supply the blankets, jackets, scarves, gift cards and personal care items that were requested. The effort began a few years ago when Feher was actively looking for a charity to support for the holidays and learned about the Coatesville VA. After contacting the VA, Feher listed the needed items on the Hellertown and Doylestown Community Facebook pages. She noted that the community members are so eager to participate each year that they begin making inquiries about the project in October and November. Feher stated, “(People ask), ‘What are we doing this year? Do we have a list yet?’” In addition, Transportation Management Association of Chester County (TMACC), a nonprofit corporation that oversees transportation needs among organizations and municipalities within Chester County, delivered hundreds of gifts for veterans at the Coatesville VA on Dec. 17. The gift items included coffee makers, blenders, microwaves, slow cookers and toaster ovens. The Coatesville VA is a major stop along the Coatesville Link bus route, and the event is the result of the partnership between TMACC and the VA. This year marks the seventh year that TMACC has held a donation drive in the community to help provide gifts for veterans. The donations were coordinated through Tim Phelps, TMACC executive director, through the Foundation for the

Improvement of Transportation (FIT). Ten donation boxes were distributed throughout FIT membership locations, allowing all FIT members to donate. Betty Shaw, executive administrator at TMACC, also leads TMACC’s annual gift delivery effort. Shaw does not just collect from FIT; donations come in from the Summerfield at Elverson community, the Village of Rose View in Jennersville and local Boy Scouts. On the day of the distribution, the Coatesville VA Voluntary Services team and the FIT team worked together to get all the gifts into the Great Hall. The gifts collected were not only delivered to patients at the VA, but also to veterans and their families who receive transitional and subsidized housing assistance through VA’s Grant and Per Diem Programs.

were treated to a complete holiday dinner that included turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn mixed with diced red and green peppers, tossed salad and coleslaw. Also offered were beverages and a variety of holiday desserts, including fruit salad, cookies and candy. Pie donated by Nancy and Bruce Hodge of Highland Orchards was served tableside by church volunteers. Volunteers arrived early at the church to bake the turkey breasts and other food items served during the meal. “We bake (the turkeys) in bags to keep in the juices,” noted lead cook Karl Findeison. The Rev. Amy Banka, the new lead pastor at Hopewell UMC, provided a prayer before the meal, and Bennington thanked all the volunteers, including the kitchen staff and the cleanup crew. The dinner was held in the church’s Family Life Center, which was decorated for the occasion. A stereo played Christmas music and festival lights were projected on the ceiling. The tables were decorated with

gingerbread houses made in advance by students from Hopewell Christian Preschool and the church’s Sunday school class. Following the dinner, extra food was given out to attendees in takeout containers provided by the church. All in attendance were also invited to take home a gift bag and a copy of the New Testament. Hopewell UMC is located at 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown. Worship services at Hopewell include a Saturday contemporary service at 5:25 p.m. in the main sanctuary. Sunday traditional worship services are held at 8 and 9:30 a.m. in Bower Chapel, located on the church campus. The Chester County Youth Center recently received a state Program of the Year award for its dog treat-making initiative, which allows youth center residents to earn community service hours through a hands-on service project. The organic homemade treats made by the youths are donated to the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester. The Pennsylvania Juvenile Detention Centers and Alternative Programs (JDCAP) award was presented in December to Kristi Washington the caseworker at the youth center, who developed the program. “This is an annual award,” she explained. “Every detention center can nominate one of their programs.” The dog treat program runs up to six times a year for Chester County Youth Center residents. The program begins with baking the all-natural dog treats from scratch. “I have recipe that I got from one of the former probation officers. It’s only four ingredients - organic peanut butter, whole wheat flour, milk and baking powder - so it’s easy for the kids,” said Washington. “They mix everything by hand. I have a rolling pin and they roll it out like cookie dough, and we have dog bone cutouts. I take (the treats)

back to the kitchen and bake them. We bag them up and put four or five to a bag.” Each treat-making session also includes a lesson about rescue shelters and their importance in the community. “The majority of (the youths) like dogs or have a dog and know about the SPCA,” said Washington, noting that the sessions also offer lessons about accurate measuring and baking. “Some of the boys and girls actually bake, but others have no idea and have never made cookies. So, it teaches them that as well.” Washington delivers the treats personally to the SPCA, where staff members always express their appreciation for the donation. “The one time they sent me a picture of one of their puppies eating the homemade dog treat,” she said, noting that plans call for one of the SPCA staff members to visit the youths at the center along with adoptable dogs. Participants in the youth center’s Evening Reporting Center (ERC) have also delivered the treats made by the center’s residents to the SPCA, where they learned first-hand about volunteer opportunities and how the organization relies on community donations like the dog treats. Washington explained that ERC is a program for youths who attend structured sessions at the center on weekday evenings.

“ERC is for those kids who are involved with juvenile probation. It’s like an after-school program but located in the same building,” she noted. “They do their homework here and eat dinner here, and they do a lot of community service.” The Chester County Youth Center provides specialized programs for youths who are receiving services from the Chester County Juvenile Probation Department; the Chester County Department of Children, Youth and Families; and the Chester County Court of Common Pleas. “We’re a juvenile detention center and shelter. We have the kids stay here, but we are a holding facility and they are not here long,” Washington pointed out. She said that staff members are always looking for community service activities that the youths can enjoy. “A lot of the staff have dogs, and we are big dog people,” Washington said. “The dog treat program has been extremely beneficial for the youth center residents as well as the youths that attend our Evening Reporting Center,” said Gary Blair, director of the Chester County Youth Center. “Not only do they earn valuable and appreciated community service hours, but they benefit from working together as a See Center pg 5

Donna Yurick. “We don’t have a lot of room for clothing, but we collect purses and (accessories).” Proceeds from the shop, which opened in 2009, benefit the church and its outreach programs. Volunteer Bev Estes explained that the thrift shop is located in the rear of the church building in what were formerly the church’s Sunday school rooms. “When we bought the Chrisman House (located next to the church), we moved some of the Sunday school rooms there,” she said, explaining how the thrift shop space became available. The thrift shop is located in the back of the church sanctuary, which is accessible via a stone driveway. The thrift shop has its own parking available. Signs direct visitors to the shop when it is open for business. The volunteers encourage community members to stop by to shop for quality items offered at reasonable prices. “The inventory changes constantly. We are always getting donations,” said Yurick, noting that church member Janice Camaho is in charge of displaying the items. Coventryville United Methodist Church is located at 1521 Old Ridge Road, Pottstown, just off Route 23, 1 mile west of the intersections of route 100 and 23. The Sunday worship schedule includes the following: 8:30 a.m., pastor’s Sunday school; 9:30 a.m., The Welcome Table - a contemporary worship service, along with nursery and children’s ministry and an adult Sunday school class; and 11 a.m., traditional worship service. For more details about the thrift shop, readers may call the church office at 610469-9350 or visit www.coventryville umc.org/2019/12/17/thrift-shop. More information about the church is available at www.coventryvilleumc.org or by searching for “Coventryville United Methodist Church” on Facebook.

Santiago emphasized that the seminar can be useful for couples that are experiencing any kind of marital strife. “(They may ask) ‘Is it how we communicate? How we manage our finances? Childhood trauma that we haven’t addressed?’ It could be anger, verbal or physical abuse, or emotional abuse,” said Santiago. “There are all kinds of things that can be wrong in a marriage, and (the seminar) will address all of that. Our desire is to encourage and strengthen marriages.” Groups are welcome, and table discounts will be available for larger groups. God’s grace in the middle of the pain and anger. They began to focus on allowing God to restore their brokenness, putting their entire lives into rebuilding the family. The Conquer Series helped James understand what was happening in his mind and impacted his movement forward away from addiction. In 2014, Santiago worked with Petra Church in New Holland to bring Roberts to Lancaster County. Roberts taught a seminar at the church and then served as a speaker at a banquet for an addictions ministry Santiago was directing at the time. In his work at RTCM, Santiago strives to help individuals who have turned to addictions often to overcome a past trauma. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago uses The Conquer Series with the clients at RTCM because he says Roberts’ book “Pure Desire” addresses the principles of sexual addiction. “I ask (clients) to tell me what a chapter was about, what (they) learned, how (they) can apply that in (their lives),” said Santiago. “That helps them (because it) starts transforming them from the inside out. I want them to develop accountability. I use (the series) because it’s effective.”

The Crafts became involved with the series after James was exposed for his sexual addiction while the couple was serving at a church in Hawaii. James thought he would take his secrets to his grave, and before they were exposed, Teri had no idea he was struggling. In trying to control his life, James said that God pointed out to him that he was not in control. He confessed to his wife and three daughters, and the family began packing to leave Hawaii. Packing, however, was only the beginning. The journey of healing began when James’ daughters came to him and hugged him, and the couple started to see

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) is starting the new year with its All-In Member Challenge. From Jan. 6 to Sunday, March 1, YGBW members are eligible to earn points by working out and/or referring friends to the YMCA. Those who earn points are entered into weekly drawings for gift cards. At the end of the challenge, the person with the most points will receive a specially valued gift card. If there is a tie, the person who visited his or her YMCA branch the most over the eight-week challenge will win. If there is still a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the winner. As extra motivation, anyone who is not a member of the YGBW but wants to participate in the challenge will have the join fee waived when they sign up for a 12-month membership. Readers may visit www.ymcagbw.org/blog/all -member-challenge-2020 for details on the challenge.
