become a teacher. “I tried to incorporate some truth into the fiction,” Dragon stated. Dragon already has plans to continue the story through future books. Book two is already underway and in the hands of the illustrator. “This story is about standing up to a bully and about brotherly and sisterly love,” Dragon said. “For book two, we go back to the Land of Dragons. My son is taken away to start his education to become a dragon. He wants to go and have fun (instead), but he finds out that learning can be fun. So the theme of book two is education.” Dragon added that the third book is currently in outline form. Dragon said that his last name is Polish, and it was not changed when his ancestors came to America. “Years ago, Ancestry.com had a free weekend and I found my grandfather’s name on the ship’s registry when he left from Germany,” Dragon said. “My dad gave me a great name. It is a great name for a firefighter.” On the book’s cover, it states, “A story by Steve Dragon (really!).” He said that this mention is in response to people who ask, “Dragon - is that really your last name?” to which he replies, “Yes, really.” Dragon said that writing the book has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “There are so many things in life that we want to do, and we never accomplish them,” he said. “I did this, which is what makes me feel the best.” For more information about the book, readers may search for “Were You Born a Dragon?” on Facebook.

borrowed pictures from the internet and made a pamphlet. She took it to school and read it to her students.” It took Dragon only a few days to write the book. “I had it in my brain for 30 years,” he said, noting that the story is based on the real-life bond between Rachel and her older brother, Steven. After investigating several different self-publishing sites on the internet, Dragon chose Book Baby to publish the book, which is illustrated by Catherine McMahon. “I told her what I wanted, and she came up with absolutely beautiful illustra-

It was published in December. “Thirty years ago I started telling my daughter about how I could turn into a dragon and we could fly off into the Land of Dragons for an adventure,” he said. “My daughter believed the stories as much as she believed in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “(Rachel) was telling her students about how she is a dragon and about the Land of Dragons. She called me and told me that her students didn’t believe her, so (she told me it was time to write the book),” he continued. “I

There, they must receive the blessing of the King of Dragons so that they can raise her to be a dragon. But first, they must get past Arnod, the Chief Security Dragon, who does not like children. Like in real life, Steven protects Rachel on her journey. In the book, Dragon, who has been a fire company volunteer for 32 years, mentions his mother and his father, who was also a volunteer firefighter. will include land use, stream ecology, groundwater, wetlands, wildlife, geology, invasive plants and stormwater management. Master Watershed Stewards take part in various projects, such as planting trees, hosting stream and trash cleanups and organizing community walks. Some of the events are held in conjunction with local watershed associations. “There are options for whatever interests the volunteer. Some people like to go out to festivals and talk to homeowners,” said Hopkins-Doerr. “Others like to take care of stream monitoring devices. They go out and clean them and maintain them and check them for trends.” Some volunteers will wade in the water to collect creatures that live in the streams. “(Stewards) collect macroinvertebrates (bugs), which are an indicator of a healthy stream,” said HopkinsDoerr. “They are sensitive to pollution. If there is (excess) sediment or chlorine, they will show it.” Volunteers also have an opportunity to participate in stream restoration. “Stream restoration work could be putting in live stakes. These are branch cuttings from certain trees that if you put them in the ground, they will root and stabilize the stream bank,” said Hopkins-Doerr. See Watershed pg 4

fourth meeting of the newly formed post. “For the first meeting, we had a physical therapist,” Holling said. “The second was a (newspaper) reporter, and for the third meeting, we had a nurse.” March’s meeting will feature a talk by a local actor. Holling emphasized that youths from any geographical area are invited to join the post. “Kids who want to come and learn and find out what it’s about can come and visit (before joining),” he noted. “We have one group of kids who come from southern Chester County.” Holling explained that the historic site contacted Boy Scouts of America when deciding to form a post at the site. “We are part of the Horseshoe Trail District,” he said. “Right now, we are meeting monthly and we get around 10 (attendees). We would like to get 20 to 30 kids.” In addition to learning about future career options from guest speakers, youths are provided information about the Mill at Anselma. “For the first meeting, we took the kids on a tour,” Holling stated. “My polling of them afterward (determined that) all found it interesting and fascinating. We’ll keep doing that. We want them to be an integral part of the mill.” The Mill at Anselma is a Colonial-era custom grist mill that features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site, which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005, is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Education Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. Future plans for Explorer Post 1747 include performing community service at the mill and other local sites. “There’s a duality to what we provide - education and community service,” said Holling. “In West Pikeland there are other nonprofits such as Historic Yellow Springs and the Chester Springs Library, and those folks are aware that we started the program and will expand to include them in the scope of community service. We are keeping it to West Pikeland (for now), but we want to expand it over time to cover more historic sites.” Holling believes that having the post meet at the mill will draw even more attention to the historically significant site. “It is not uncommon for people to say, ‘I have driven past this place for years and I didn’t know what it was,’” he said. Future Explorer Post 1747 programs will focus on the fields youths are interested in pursuing in their careers, including marketing, medical arts and social media. “We’re still finding things kids are interested in,” Holling said. The Mill at Anselma is located 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs. More information about the mill is available at www.anselmamill.org.

Lancaster Conservancy will host a History and Headwaters Hike from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve, 601 Gault Road, New Holland, the largest nature preserve in Lancaster County. The event will include a discussion of the history of Welsh Mountain and the natural resources it protects and a 2-mile hike. Attendees will go behind the scenes of this over-900-acre preserve and explore the restoration area that protects the headwaters of both the Pequea

and Conestoga creeks. Hikers should wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather outdoors. There are no bathrooms at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve. There is a cost to take part. Should there be a forecast of weather conditions that would make the hike unsafe, hikers will be notified of a cancellation and refunded 24 hours prior to the event. To register, readers may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Lancaster Conservancy.”

Watershed from pg 2 Finally, volunteers educate adults and children about the environment. “(Stewards) give presentations to the public,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “It can be at a school, at libraries and for different groups that reach out requesting a presentation.” Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all events. “The background doesn’t matter - we have teachers, engineers, someone who works in transportation and retirees. It runs the gamut,” Hopkins-Doerr said. The Master Watershed Steward Program is offered in

both Chester and Delaware counties. “We have more of an agriculture focus in Chester County,” Hopkins-Doerr noted. “In Delaware County, we focus on urban stormwater issues.” Hopkins-Doerr encourages all those interested in the program to attend one of the upcoming information sessions. Attendees are not obligated to apply for the program. “(Volunteering) is fun, plus you are making a difference,” she stated. For more information, readers may contact Hopkins-Doerr at 610696-3500 or mxh1135@psu.edu or visit www.extension.psu.edu/ programs/watershed-stewards/ counties/chester-delaware.

At age 17, Healey founded Project Naloxone, which provides police departments in Chester County with the lifesaving drug also known as Narcan - for each of their vehicles, as well training at no cost on how to administer the drug. For his work with Project Naloxone, Healey, now 23, was honored with the Presidential Award for Meritorious Service from the Chester County Association of Township Officials and received citations from the Chester County Commissioners, the Pennsylvania House and Senate and the United States House of Representatives and Senate. To register for the upcoming meeting, individuals are asked to email Scouting@anselmamill.org. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition -

By Francine Fulton

When the Rev. Bradley Burke was named the lead pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Exton last fall, he began an effort not only to build on all the successful programs already in place at the church but to prepare the congregation for expansion and growth to meet the changing needs of the community. “We are trying to do structural work to figure out how we build ourselves as an organization so we can provide for people’s needs, Burke said. “We want to make sure people are taken care of. We want to make sure there are ministries for people of all ages and different walks of life. Prior to joining St. Paul’s, Burke, a graduate of the University of Scranton and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, was assistant to the bishop in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod. “I was specialized in various areas on the bishop’s staff - things like global mission, youth ministry and congregational leadership, he noted. Burke has also served at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Unionville and St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Aston. Since his arrival at St. Paul’s, Burke has been getting to know the people of the congregation and learning about their needs. “I am getting to know ... what people are used to and what people are hungry for and hasn’t been done but there is a need or a growing interest for, he said. “I am a big fan of experimenta-

tion and the church being fresh and engaging for people. He noted that congregations today must learn ways to keep people involved with the church through attendance at services and through community service. “I think churches are going to be more of an alternative kind of community where people find something that, by and large, our society does not offer, Burke explained. “Churches that are healthy are engaged with their community and opening their doors to community partners and groups. At St. Paul’s, a traditional Sunday worship service is held 8 a.m. and an informal service is offered at 10:45 a.m. “The music is very different (between the two services), Burke said. “The first one is exactly what you would expect (from a traditional service); the second one is a range of more contemporary music from the last 30 years or so. Sunday school for people of all ages meets at 9:15 a.m. The church also offers a Rejoicing Spirits Worship Service for people with developmental disabilities on the second Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. Burke said that his sermons focus on helping people with their daily struggles. As a huge “Star Wars fan, he sometimes infuses humor into his Sunday messages by incorporating the movie’s music and dialogue. “I jokingly say this, but one of my principles of ministry is that we if we are not having fun and finding joy in this, we are doing it wrong, he said. “The Gospel is a message of freedom, of joy

and hope. If we are not incarnating that, we are failing in our role as evangelists as people who tell the story. Future plans at St. Paul’s call for hiring a director of youth and family ministries, offering an expanded youth program and possibly scheduling another service. “We’re hoping to expand what we are doing in children’s and youth ministry pretty robustly, starting with (the school year in the fall), said Burke. “We are exploring adding an interactive worship service that would be learning and worship so families could do that together. Children are impoverished in terms of how much family time they get these days because of how busy our culture is. Our whole week is bouncing around to separate places. Maybe church could be the one place where we don’t do that. Burke lives in Downingtown with his wife, Kim, and their 8-year-old son, Liam. “My family and I are blessed to be joining such a warm, caring group of people who are genuinely exploring what it means to live out God’s will in these changing times, he stated. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is located at 104 S. Village Ave., Exton (Lionville). For more information about church activities, readers may visit www.stpauls lionville.org.

Through a new service offered by the Chester County court system, any juveniles who successfully complete a diversion program will have their record expunged when they turn 18 years old, provided they meet eligibility requirements. The move is the result of recommendations by Chester County’s Juvenile Probation Office and is made in consultation and cooperation with the Chester County Clerk of Courts Office, District Attorney’s Office and Chester County Courts. This Chester County service applies to all eligible juveniles who turned 18 on or after Aug. 1, 2019. “Currently, juveniles who complete a diversion program can initiate the expungement process after six months have passed since their supervision ended if they have remained out of the criminal justice system,” said Yolanda Van de Krol, Chester County’s clerk of courts. “Most juveniles don’t take this action and then find that information on their non-adjudicated record may impact applications for college, for jobs or even for renting apartments. The information is sealed in our office, but it can get out by other means.” The types of records that will be expunged for first-time offenders who successfully completed a diversion program include misdemeanors such as criminal mischief, criminal trespass or disorderly conduct. It is estimated that this new service will lead to 100 to 150 additional expungements per year, but the system being put in place means the new service will be absorbed within the existing responsibilities of the Clerk of Courts Office and the other offices. No more staff members will be added. Prior to formally filing an expungement motion of an 18year-old to the court, the Juvenile Probation Office will determine eligibility and provide the motion to the District Attorney’s Office. If there is no objection, the order will then be submitted to the court for consideration. If the court approves the expungement, the Clerk of Courts Office will send a certified copy of the expungement order to all agencies having been involved with the juvenile. Similar to the county’s statewide Clean Slate program that seals but does not expunge records, this expungement service for non-adjudicated juveniles will not require any action by the juvenile to initiate the process and will not include follow-up correspondence to juveniles whose records have been expunged.

R054572

Freedom Life Church will present Night to Shine, a prom-style event for people with special needs age 14 and over, at a new venue this year. Night to Shine will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. The event was moved from the Shady Maple Banquet Facility to accommodate even more Night to Shine guests. “It has been a phenomenal event for our guests, their families and our volunteers, and we’re looking forward to bringing it to the greater Octorara area and surrounding communities,” said Stacey McNutt, event coordinator. “It has been a positive experience to work with the school, and we’re excited to be able to offer larger spaces considering our increasing attendance.” Every guest of Night to Shine enters the complimentary event on a red carpet complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and “paparazzi.” Once inside, they may take part in hair and makeup services and a shoe shining area. Guests are presented with a corsage or boutonniere and are paired with an assigned buddy who stays with them through the evening. All attendees may enjoy dinner and the opportunity to dance to music provided by a disc jockey. Other activities include karaoke and limousine rides. One of the highlights of the evening is when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom. A respite room is offered for parents and caregivers. Night to Shine, an event for people with developmental disabilities, is sponsored annually by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Tebow attends various Night to Shine events throughout the world as a surprise to attendees. Freedom Life Church also welcomes members of the community to join its extensive volunteer team that will help to make Night to Shine a success. Requirements include background checks, watching training videos and mandatory attendance at a pre-event rally. To register as a guest or a volunteer, readers may visit www.freedom.life/night-to-shine. Readers may call 610-593-5959 or email info@freedom.life with questions. Freedom Life Church’s central office is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Church groups meet for Sunday worship at Octorara Junior-Senior High School; Rainbow Elementary School, 1113 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; and Providence Elementary School, 137 Truce Road, New Providence. There is also a church in Bellefonte, Centre County. Readers may visit www.freedom.life to learn more. Immaculata Adds Esports To Its Programs Electronic Sports (Esports) is a growing segment of collegiate competition, and, starting this fall, Immaculata University (IU) is launching its own program. IU will become a member of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) and compete in the East Coast Conference.
