“Grease” is the play at Twin Valley High School Sew creative

Allthe music, dancing and personalities that audiences are familiar with will be brought to the stage as the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Theater Arts Club presents “Grease” as its annual spring musical. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 30 to April 1, as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2.

To coincide with the musical, there will be a vintage car show at TVHS on April 1 at 3 p.m. The car show is free to spectators, and costumed cast members from the play will be on hand at the event.

“Grease” tells the story of new student Sandy Dumbrowski, played by Lydia Blankenbiller, and Danny Zuko, played by Kellen Styer, members of Rydell High’s senior Class of 1959, who are reunited in high school after a secret summertime romance. Everything changes when they get back to school because Danny is trying to maintain his tough-guy image. In the end, the Pink Ladies help Sandy figure out how to win him back. Popular songs featured in the musical include “Greased Lightnin’,” “Summer Nights” and “We Go Together.”

“This is the Broadway play that came out before the movie,” explained Jessie Miller, show producer. “There will be some differences. Audiences will realize that the songs don’t happen in the same order as they do in the movie.”

For Kellen, who is active in school sports, this is the first time he has ever auditioned for a high school play. “Being able to sing while dancing and knowing where you need to be on stage and when is the most challenging,” he said. “There is a lot to think about.”

Lydia said that she originally planned to audition for the role of Rizzo, but realized that her personality is more fitting to play Sandy, with the exception of the final scene. Of the last scene, she noted, “I had to learn how to be something I’m not and fully immerse myself in the character,” she said.

In addition to Kellen and Lydia, the cast includes: Sara Blankenbiller as Miss Lynch, Lorelie Koller as Patty Simcox, Benjamin Scott as

Eugene, Jenna DiFabrizio as Jan, Natalie Clayton as Mary, Heather Anderson as Rizzo, Evan Johnson as Doody, Patrick Skoniczin as Roger, Michael Haak as Kenickie, Sam Donnellan as Sonny, Cecilia Skoniczin as Frenchy, Ian Eversmeyer as the radio announcer, Louise Stoltzfus as the radio soloist, Gary Meals as Vince Fontaine, Zachary Hinkel as Johnny Casino, Keira Hegarty as Cha-Cha and Zoe Simon as Teen Angel.

Combining her love of history and her talent for sewing, Maggie Thorpe, a member of BSA Troop 543G, has made costumes for re-enactors at Historic Joanna Furnace as her Eagle Scout service project.

Maggie and her fellow troop members gathered in the Mule Stable at Joanna Furnace on Feb. 25 to sew the costumes with help from adult seamstresses and Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) volunteers.

“Right now, Historic Joanna Furnace has many costumes in some sizes but lacks many (smaller) sizes for young people, which has made it difficult for the upcoming generation to get involved,” said Maggie. “We made historical garments to fill out Joanna Furnace’s costume bank, which is lent out to re-enactors. We made eight short gowns and four shifts and three caps. All of these were completed and taken directly to the costume bank before we left.”

Boone Library sets garden party

A garden party fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Boone Area Library. Activities will include a nature scavenger hunt, a butterfly windsock craft, a Hungry Caterpillar food toss game and snacks.

All events will take place in the library’s community room. “It is a family event for all ages. There will be small games for kids to play, and kids will get to decorate a terracotta pot and plant a seed of their choice,” said library director Ashley Cole, noting that all supplies will be provided. “There will be a photo

booth section set up so families can take nice spring photos.”

Food will include “worms in dirt” pudding cups, tea sandwiches, fruit and veggie cups.

“We used to do an Easter breakfast and have moved away from that this year,” Cole said, noting that the event will take place during library hours. “If anyone walks in and sees what we are doing, they can join.”

Tickets for the garden party are currently on sale at the library, and tickets will also be sold at the door. All ticketholders will be given a ticket to enter into a drawing for door prizes.

Grange to offer scholarships

The Pennsylvania State Grange announced that members in good standing have the opportunity to receive educational assistance through several Pennsylvania Grange Foundation scholarship and loan programs this spring. Through this financial assistance, the Grange hopes to promote studies in agriculture and related fields with the goal of further supporting rural communities and bolstering local Granges. Several scholarships are available.

Established in 1996 by state delegate action, the Pennsylvania State Grange Foundation Scholarship is available to students entering their junior or senior year in college, and financial need must be demonstrated. Applicants are eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship each year, for a maximum of two years.

Up to four scholarships will be awarded.

The Deaf Interpreter Scholarship is open to individuals enrolled in a credible program leading to certification as an interpreter for the deaf. The Grange will award a $250 grant each year.

The Grange Scholarship Endowment at Penn State University recognizes the outstanding work of an undergraduate student enrolled in his or her sophomore, junior, or senior year at any campus of Pennsylvania State University. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. The recipient of this scholarship will be selected by the Penn State Office of Student Aid Scholarship Committee from nominees named by the Pennsylvania State Grange Scholarship Committee. The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded

for one academic year and may be renewed for subsequent years provided the recipient continues to meet the conditions of eligibility and no other eligible students are identified.

The Rhone Grant is given in honor of Leonard Rhone, the third Master of the Pennsylvania State Grange. This grant is available to students pursuing a degree in agriculture or human development and family services at Penn State University. One scholarship in the amount of $300 will be available each year. Eligible candidates must be a member in good standing and secure a recommendation from both the master of their Subordinate and Pomona Granges.

Santee Student Loans were established by Ellis M. Santee, an active Grange member and

rural doctor, to help Grange members obtain an education. Grange members or their children may apply for one of five $2,000 loans if they are a fulltime student at any institution accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). If selected, students will be required to sign a promissory note to receive the loan. Repayment of this interest-free loan shall begin within six months of graduating or leaving school. The minimum repayment requirement is $30 per month per $1,000 borrowed, payable over a three-year period. The application deadline is Monday, May 1. For more information, call the state office at 717-737-8855 or visit www.pagrange.org/ grange-foundation.html for an application.

Three prize baskets will be available to win: a gardening basket; a picnic backpack containing napkins and a tablecloth, cutlery, drinking glasses and more; and a handcrafted bird feeder.

Tickets for the prize basket drawings can be purchased in advance of the garden party.

“We have the prizes on display at the library,” Cole noted. “You can buy tickets for whichever basket you want. This is for people who can’t make (the garden party)

but were interested in the items we have to (give away).”

All proceeds from the spring fundraiser will go to the library operating costs and, beyond that, to replace the library’s heating and air-conditioning system. “Our heating and AC system is aged and is always in need of repairs. It needs to be replaced before it can no longer be fixed,” Cole said. “Once we reach our regular operating budget, our goal is to fix that. We have a thermometer in our lobby showing how much money we need to raise, and hopefully, we’ll see that thermometer creep up.”

Ongoing programs at the library include story times held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. and Helping Hands Bingo for preschoolers and seniors held on Fridays at 10:15 a.m., followed by Mahjong at 12:30 p.m. The library’s knitting and crocheting club meets at 10 a.m. on Mondays and at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. The Boone Area Library is located at 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro. For more information about any of the library activities, call 610-582-5666 or visit www.facebook.com/ boonearealibrary.

Sewing project

Maggie, 17, a senior homeschooled student, has been a volunteer re-enactor at Historic Joanna Furnace since she was a youngster, working at the HCVHA Fall Festival and Apple Festival. “I have been involved for quite a long time. I remember I started at the candle-making stand,” she said. “I worked there for three to five years and moved on to helping at the open fire cooking (area). I love historic dress and living history.”

While volunteering as a teen, Maggie wore a costume that she made herself. “(Volunteering) motivated me to start sewing,” she stated. “My grandmom taught me some of the basics, and I have gone through a few lessons with a woman at my church who is a seamstress.”

Maggie came up with the idea of completing the project

in November 2022 and then contacted Mark Zerr, executive director of the HCVHA, for guidance. She also had to have the project approved by the adult committee of Troop 543G, which meets at Robeson Evangelical Lutheran Church, as well as the Hawk Mountain Council, BSA. Then, she collected donations of fabric. “(We had to use) natural fibers, something that portrayed the late 18th century,” Maggie noted. “I got the patterns from an online store, Burnley and Trowbridge, which specializes in reproduction fabrics and patterns for re-enactors.”

Maggie is currently completing the final paperwork for her project. She is appreciative of

her fellow Scouts who helped with the sewing. “Usually we do a fundraiser at the Apple Festival. Last year, we sold cupcakes, which was pretty successful,” she said. “This year, the girls will be able to look around and see the costumes we made and say, ‘We worked on that one.’”

Students in the Penn State Berks mechanical engineering and occupational therapy programs collaborate each year to create devices to meet the needs of individuals with physical challenges as part of the Pfreimer Adaptive Equipment Project (PADEP). The students present their collaborative work at the end of the fall semester. Then one or two teams advance through the competition and work with senior business majors to refine their prototype concept through business analysis in the spring semester.

This year, five teams developed and designed the concept prototype for assistive devices, and two of those teams were selected to continue their work in the spring with business students. The students were allotted a budget of $120 to create their prototypes, and projects were assessed by a team of faculty members.

The Black Team shared its idea for Easy Trash, a device with a large handle and adjustable heights that assists with weight distribution to make it easier to remove heavy trash bags from trash cans. The team theorized that its device would be helpful for users with arthritis or amputees, as well as anyone else who struggles to remove a trash bag from its can. The Black Team consisted of Abby Ackley, Armin Almasi, Aubrie

Bollinger, Michael Cotter, Jacki Fulford, and Josh Miller.

The Brown Team presented its proof of concept for motorized adjustable shelving, which the team theorized would help users with muscular dystrophy and other mobility issues. The prototype featured a motorized system that allows users to not only pull the shelving out of the cabinet but also lift it, the latter being a unique feature in the market. The team explained that the device could be retrofitted for existing cabinetry or could be custom-built. The members of the Brown Team were Courtney Bolton, Jake English, Sam Eshleman, Patrick O’Donnell, and Karie Wagner.

The Red Team pitched a device that would help health care workers to care for individuals who are confined to a

bed and would help prevent bedsores in patients. In its presentation, the team shared a motorized model prototype featuring removable side panels that would allow workers to move patients with the touch of a button. The Red Team consisted of Daniel George, Megan Kenny, Jakob Kopf, Andrew Omelczenko, Olivia Sheridan, and Dominick Shortridge.

The Orange Team’s prototype was for the EZ-Clip Collar, a pet collar that aims to help pet owners who have grip issues. The team members discovered through market research that their idea, although simple, did not exist in many iterations or designs. Their prototype featured a strong magnet with an easy latch that would allow individuals with arthritis and other grip issues to easily put on and take off their pet’s collar, without the pet’s breaking away from it. The Orange Team consisted of Chris Adams, Jake Danko, Ryan Light, Morgan Lusch, Nicollette Moratori, and Maddie Smith.

The final team to present was the Yellow Team, which

had devised a jar opener intended to put less strain on users’ fingers and wrists and

PennDOT seeking public input

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced several opportunities for Pennsylvanians to participate in the transportation planning process. Every two years, the State Transportation Commission (STC) and PennDOT update Pennsylvania’s 12-Year Program (TYP), and public feedback is a critical part of that process.

The public comment period for the TYP update will continue through Sunday,

April 30. During the public comment period, Pennsylvanians can submit feedback by taking the Transportation Survey at https://survey .talkpatransportation.com/# /Survey or emailing comments to RA-PennDOT STC@pa.gov. Public feedback and survey results will help identify needs and prioritize transportation projects across the state.

PennDOT will also host an online public forum on Wednesday, April 12, from

6:30 to 8 p.m. Pennsylvanians can pose transportation-related questions to PennDOT leadership and members of the STC during the public forum.

The Transportation Performance Report is a combined effort among the STC, the State Transportation Advisory Committee, and PennDOT, and it is updated every two years. It is the first step in the state’s transportation program planning process and helps to evaluate the system’s performance and opportunities for progress.

PennDOT will make all reasonable modifications to policies, programs, and documents to ensure that people with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency have an equal opportunity to provide feedback on Pennsylvania’s transportation network. To request assistance participating in the survey or the online public

Wellness Call program launched

Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.

With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of

assist individuals with arthritis, carpal tunnel, and grip issues. The prototype adjusted to any size lid and any height jar and allowed users to break a jar’s vacuum seal using just one hand. The bottom was encased with a rubber material to prevent the device from sliding on counters. The members of the Yellow Team were Lillian Byrd, Caleb Hooper, Ethan Link, Pedro Rodriguez, and Kristina Valera.

At the conclusion of the fall semester, PADEP faculty advisers nominated the Red Team’s mobile bed frame and the Orange Team’s pet collar to move forward with business analysis in the spring. To determine which projects would be nominated, Jim Laurie, assistant teaching professor of business, surveyed the faculty and staff members who

attended the event, summarizing their input for the PADEP faculty advisers. Armed with that data, faculty advisers Amir Barakati, associate teaching professor of mechanical engineering; David Kresse, associate teaching professor of occupational therapy; and Rungun Nathan, professor of engineering, evaluated the data to determine if the projects have the potential to go through a second iteration.

Now that the Red and Orange teams have been selected to move forward, at least one occupational therapy and one engineering student from each team will need to continue in the spring as the business students take the lead.

To learn more about the PADEP and its history, contact Rungun Nathan at rungun.nathan@psu.edu.

isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.
