School To Present “A Night With Zach Ertz” By Francine Fulton
For its Founders Event, Conestoga Christian School will present “A Night With Zach Ertz,” featuring an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles football player, on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 430 S. Seventh Ave., Reading. The evening will include a moderated question-andanswer session with Ertz, led by Ed Parris, head of school, and photo opportunities for the first 250 event ticket holders who sign up to purchase a photo. There will also be an opportunity to win autographed Eagles footballs, as well as signed copies of the book “Birds of Pray: The
Story of the Philadelphia Eagles’ Faith, Brotherhood, and Super Bowl Victory.” According to Deborah Kurtz, the school’s event coordinator, the school specifically sought out Ertz, who is well known on the field for his dedication and work ethic and off the field for his faith and charity work. “We requested to have him come as the speaker for our fifth Founders Event,” explained Kurtz. “Every year we have a speaker who has a faith in Christ, (and) it is a fundraiser for our school. We’re hoping to sell 1,300 tickets.” Ertz, a two-time Pro Bowler, was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He caught the touchdown See Zach Ertz pg 6

To coincide with the popularity and competitiveness of the springtime college basketball tournament, the Honey Brook Food Pantry is holding its second annual March Madness Food Drive. As part of the event, local businesses and organizations are competing to see which one can collect the most food and donations for the pantry. Last year, eight teams took part and were dubbed “Honey Brook’s Elite Eight,” competing against each other to become the 2018 Honey Brook Food Pantry champion. This year, the event has been expanded to include 18 teams. Local businesses are taking part, as well as Honey Brook Elementary Center (HBEC), Heatherwood Retirement Community and Hickory House Nursing Home. “Last year we limited it to the top
one of the event organizers. “That was such a success, we decided to expand it to more retail-oriented businesses.” Horvath noted that Division 1 consists of larger employers, including wholesale-oriented businesses and HBEC. Division 2 is for smaller, retailoriented businesses. To equalize the size of the companies, the total pounds collected will be divided by the number of employees at each location. “The winners of each bracket will advance, and the losers will move to a consolation bracket,” Horvath explained, noting that Dave Larson of R-V Industries designed the brackets. For the first week, the food donations were weighed at the food pantry on March 15. A weigh-in was scheduled for March 22, and the final weigh-in will be on Friday, March 29. See Food Pantry pg 4

Lauder, Unionville High School; and Sarah Guan, West Chester East High School. Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizen Committee, explained that the honor is presented annually to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools. “They have been selected by their schools because of their contributions to both their schools and their communities,” Lawler said. “DAR chooses to recognize these students because they will become leaders of the future. These students are very bright and multitalented. I was amazed at how much they are already contributing to our society.” Lawler provided a brief history of the Good Citizen Award, which was established in 1934
and originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree. Each Good Citizen was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin. “The rim contains 13 stars, representing the 13 original Colonies,” Lawler explained. “The band of blue identifies our society, and there are four books on the lapel pin, titled dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. These are characteristics of a Good Citizen.” Toni Keg from Sen. Andy Dinniman’s office and John McNichol from Sen. Tom Killion’s office also presented the students with certificates. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the featured speaker at the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau’s annual spring banquet on March 14 at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen. Redding’s remarks stressed the importance of agriculture to the state, noting that it makes up 18 percent of Pennsylvania’s economy at approximately $136 billion annually. He explained that a recent study helped his department expand the state’s definition of agriculture, which includes more components than other states. For Pennsylvania, he explained, agriculture now includes all production agriculture, food processing and forestry, as well as the state’s strong equine industry. “It’s important to recognize all of agriculture is important,” he said. Redding also made remarks on the Farm Bureau’s Farmers Care Program, which helps with food needs across communities throughout the state. “At the end of the day, there is a human on both ends of what we do. The food system is critical to us every day,” Redding said. Another speaker was Kay Moyer of the Penn State University Extension program. Moyer works with Lyme disease awareness, and her responsibilities include presenting at Amish schools each year in Pennsylvania and beyond. There was also a report on the Farm Bureau’s Young Ag Professionals program by Ellie Chandler. Formerly known as the Young Farmers and Ranchers, the program encourages interaction between new and longtime farmers. Events such as the banquet provide networking opportunities. “The connections you make now
may last a lifetime,” she said. Those who attended the banquet had a chance to visit the school’s agricultural education facilities. The district’s on-site career and technical programming includes greenhouses, a hydroponics lab and livestock. Greeting visitors and answering questions were FFA members from the Octorara, Hans Herr and Oxford Area High School chapters. The FFA students also collected food items and monetary gifts for the Farmers Care Program at the banquet. Contributions will be given to local food banks. Also in attendance were Chester County winners from the Pennsylvania Farm Show along with Keystone FFA awardees. “This is fabulous. What a great way to bring the whole farming community together here in a school district that values FFA,” said Michele Orner, Octorara Area School District superintendent. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids to network and talk to those people who are currently working our farms in the area.” For more information on the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Chester DelawareCountyFarmBureau or www.ChesterDelawareCounty FarmBureau.com. Pictured on front: Among those who attended the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau’s annual spring banquet on March 14 at Octorara Junior-Senior High School were (from left) Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, Octorara Area School District superintendent Michele Orner, state Rep. Horvath reported that at the end of week one, nearly 2,700 pounds of food and dollars were donated, noting that a donation of one dollar is equal to one pound of food. Specifically, participants collected 1,711 pounds of food and more than $900. As of the first weigh-in, NovaCare Rehabilitation in Honey Brook was in the lead with more than 24 pounds/dollars per employee and HBEC was a close second at 21 pounds/dollars per employee, which includes teachers and support staff. The winning team will receive a plaque and team picture. HBEC was last year’s winner. “We are a small community, and businesses are always hit up for donations. Rather than go to the business owners, we decided to get the employees involved and make it fun,” Horvath said, noting how the idea came about.
“It’s a good team-building activity. People are enthused about it. People love competition.” Horvath invites the community to participate by donating food or making a financial contribution at a location of their choice. A list of participants and the brackets can be found by searching for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. “Everybody can donate a dollar or a can,” she said. “Every pound makes a difference.” The Honey Brook Food Pantry is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.honeybrookfood pantry.org or call 610-273-6102.

Dog Rescue from pg 1 That is why the nonprofit, allbreed, no-kill foster-based rescue is seeking local residents willing to take a dog into their homes. Veterinary care, food and supplies such as crates, bowls and toys are provided. “We look for people to love the dogs until they are adopted. It’s very fulfilling,” said April Robinson, TLC marketing and events director. Robinson noted that the organization has found homes for more than 2,900 dogs since it formed in 2013. “We are proud of that,” she stated. She said people may find it hard to release their foster dogs when permanent homes are found, but TLC tries to make that transition easier. “The cool thing about TLC is that the foster families get to meet the people who are adopting the dog. They can answer questions of the adopters, and they get to see where the dog is ending up,” Robinson explained. “You need to be in the mindset that the dog will get a great home and you can save another one because there are so many more who need to be saved.” Those who live in an apartment may also foster a dog with proof of their landlord’s permission, and foster families are not required to have a fenced-in yard. “We have different types of fosters,” said Robinson. “Overnight fosters are for dogs coming from transport. We have long-term fosters who will take a dog until it’s adopted; it could be two days, two weeks or two months. There are summer fosters for when people go on vacation. We are very flexible as far as scheduling.” For more information and to complete an application, prospective foster families may visit www.tlcrescuepa.com/foster. Those who are unable to foster a dog can volunteer in other capacities with the organization, such as helping with transports that come from other states.

“We need help with meet-andgreet events, which we do every weekend, handling dogs and taxiing dogs and helping set up events,” Robinson said. The next scheduled meet-andgreet, where residents are invited to meet adoptable dogs, will be held on Sunday, March 31, from noon to 3 p.m. at Giggy Bites Bakery, 100 Ridge Road, Chadds Ford. Those who are looking to adopt a dog from TLC may visit w w w. t l c r e s c u e p a . c o m / o u r -adoption-process for details. “Once you are approved and let us know which dog you would like to meet, we will set up a private meeting at our adoption center,” noted Robinson. “You have to bring your family and household dogs to make sure everyone gets along.” TLC dogs are spayed or neutered and brought up to date on shots appropriate for their age. They are also microchipped prior to being placed in their new homes. To help finance its work, TLC holds fundraisers. The next event will be its fourth annual “Raffles for Ruffs” fundraiser on Saturday, April 6, at the Quality Inn & Suites, 943 S. High St., West Chester. The event will include food, door prizes and opportunities to win gift baskets and other prizes. “There will be a little box in front of the baskets, and you can drop in your tickets,” said Robinson. “The admission fee gets you 25 tickets, and you can purchase more.” Food will be provided by a local Italian restaurant. Menu items will include pizza, pasta, sandwiches and salads. Tickets for the fundraiser will be sold at the door. For more information about TLC, the fundraiser or upcoming meet-and-greets, readers may email info@tlc rescuepa.com or visit www.tlc rescuepa.com or www.face book.com/TLCrescuePAinc.

Three local high school seniors were named the winners of the Chester County Choral Society’s 27th Excellence in Vocal Performance Competition, held on March 16 at the Exton Baptist Church. The contest was open to high school seniors who reside, attend high school or study music in Chester County. The first-place winner of the competition was Sofia Bobrysheva, a mezzosoprano who is a senior at Downingtown East High School. The runners-up included baritone Francis “Frankie” Jacquette, a senior at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, and Elana Babbitt, a soprano who attends Great Valley High School. Sofia, who is a vocal student of Kim Kronenberg Russell of West Chester, has also studied voice, piano and music theory at the Royal Canadian Conservatory of Music. Sofia is a Tri-M Music Honor Society member and sings in her school’s Masterworks Choir. She has placed third in the alto II category at the 2019 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Regional Choral Festival. She plans to attend West Chester University in the fall to pursue a dual degree in voice performance and music education. Frankie, who has participated in the 2018 PMEA District and Regional Choral Festivals, also plays flute, piccolo, tuba, French horn and trombone for the school’s marching and concert bands. He performed in high school musicals, playing the role of a mission band singer in “Guys and Dolls” and Mr. Banks in “Mary Poppins.” Frankie will attend the University of Delaware in the fall to study music and mathematics and will be a member of the Marching Blue Hens. Elana studies voice in Russell’s studio as well. Her past roles at local theaters and at school have included Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes,” Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Mayzie LaBird in “Seussical,” Dorothy Brown in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and Hedy LaRue in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Elana plans to attend college to study musical theater. Sue Sutter, event chair, explained that students are required to apply for the competition in advance and provide
a reference from a vocal coach or high school choral teacher. On the day of the competition, students are welcome to use an accompanist provided by the choral society or bring one of their own. “They sing one compulsory piece, so everyone sings the same piece in their vocal key,” explained Sutter. “They bring one classical number of their choice and one musical theater piece of their choice, and they sing to a panel of three judges.” This year, the competition was adjudicated by Courtney Capriotti, Teresa Moyer and Tom Sitzler. “At the end of the auditions, our judges do the tallies and then I notify the first-place winner and two runners-up,” said Sutter, noting choral members also attend the competition to escort students to the rehearsal rooms and turn music pages, among other duties. Sophia will receive $1,000, a certificate of achievement and an award plaque. The runners-up will receive $500 each and a certificate of merit. The awards will be presented at Chester County Choral Society’s spring concert, led by Gary P. Garletts. The concert, themed “Favorite Opera Choruses,” will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Good Samaritan, 212 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli. The late Honorable Charles B. Smith, who passed away in September 2018, sponsored the vocal competition and provided the scholarship money. “This year, we are dedicating the spring concert to Charlie Smith, our benefactor who has sponsored the scholarship since 2010,” Sutter said, noting that Smith was a baritone who sang at the Church of the Good Samaritan. “He felt that encouraging young singers was a good thing to do.” All three finalists will perform at the concert. “The runners-up will sing one (number) of their choice, and the winner will sing both of her audition pieces,” Sutter noted. For more information about the choral society, the vocal competition or the upcoming concert, readers may visit www.chescochoral.org.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition - March 27, 2019 - 11
Fund Will Aid Military Families Individuals filing their 2018 Pennsylvania personal income taxes can help Pennsylvania’s military personnel and their families by donating part or all of their refund to the state’s Military Family Relief Assistance Program. The program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, provides grants of up to $3,500 to Pennsylvania members of the armed forces and their families who have a direct and immediate financial need as a result of circumstances beyond their control. The tax form includes instructions on how to donate. Since the program began in 2006, more than $1.85 million has been donated by individuals filing their Pennsylvania personal
income tax returns and through private donations. Members of the armed forces who are residents of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for assistance while they are serving on active duty for 30 or more consecutive days with the Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, or Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard. All members of the armed forces who were discharged for medical reasons are also eligible to apply for assistance for up to four years after a medical discharge. In addition, reserve component service members, including Pennsylvania National Guard members, and their families may
be eligible for a grant for a period of up to three years after release from a qualifying activeduty tour. The program also applies to certain family members of eligible service members who are Pennsylvania residents. Applicants must show that they have a direct and immediate financial need as a result of circumstances beyond their control. In addition to the check-off box on the Personal Income Tax form, contributions can be made directly by sending a check to the Military Family Relief Assistance Program. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent authorized by federal law. For more information, including an address where donations may be sent, readers may visit www.mfrap.pa.gov.
Battlefield Trust Seeks Volunteers Volunteers throughout Pennsylvania are teaming up with the American Battlefield Trust to aid in the maintenance and restoration of five Keystone State battlefields and historic sites as part of Park Day, an annual nationwide, hands-on preservation event. Since its inception in 1996, Park Day has attracted volunteers of all ages and abilities. Park Day will take place on Saturday, April 6, when Pennsylvania volunteers will be joined by thousands of fellow participants across the country in cleaning up and revitalizing 160 historic sites in 32 states. Activities are
mainly outdoor projects that range from raking leaves and collecting trash to painting and gardening. Volunteers will receive T-shirts, and some sites will provide lunch or refreshments. A local historian may also be on hand to talk about the role of the site in the national story. Starting times, and occasionally event dates, may vary at each site. Pennsylvania volunteers interested in participating in Park Day are encouraged to contact the individual sites. Sites and the contact people include Brandywine Battlefield Birmingham Hill in West Chester,

PennDOT Posts REAL ID News The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding customers that they can join more than 140,000 Pennsylvanians who have pre-verified for REAL ID online and at driver’s license centers statewide. Customers who bring in the required REAL ID documentation to any PennDOT Driver License Center may apply for REAL ID online once REAL IDs are available in March and receive their REAL ID driver’s license or photo ID card in the mail. Because PennDOT may already have electronic documents on file for approximately 35 percent of its total customers - individuals who received their first Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID card after September 2003 - these customers have had the option to apply for REAL ID pre-verification online since March of 2018. Most of PennDOT’s customers, however, received their initial product before September 2003, so PennDOT does not have their required REAL ID documents on file. Customers in this group who want a REAL ID will need to bring the required documents to a driver’s license center so they can be verified in person. These customers may bring the required documents to any PennDOT driver’s license center. Federal regulations require that for an individual to be issued a REAL ID-compliant product, PennDOT must verify original versions or certified copies of certain documents, including proof of identity such as an original or
certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. Passport; proof of Social Security number (Social Security card); two proofs of a current, physical Pennsylvania address, such as a current, unexpired PA license or ID, current vehicle registration, auto insurance card, or utility bill; and proof of all legal name changes, if one’s current full legal name is different than what is reflected on the proof of identity document, such as a certified marriage certificate or court order issued by the county’s family court. PennDOT staff will image the documents to the customer’s record, and when REAL IDs are available in March 2019, the customer can opt into the REAL ID program online and their REAL ID product will be sent through the mail, eliminating any need for this customer to visit a driver’s license center. To obtain a REAL ID, customers will pay a one-time fee, plus a renewal fee. The expiration date of the initial REAL ID product will include any time remaining on their existing non-REAL ID product, plus an additional four years, unless the customer is over age 65 and has a two-year license. This expiration date structure means that the customers will not lose time that they have already paid for. After the initial REAL ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee, beyond regular renewal fees, to renew a REAL ID product.
When REAL IDs are available, customers will have three options for obtaining a REAL ID product: Customers may order their REAL ID online (pre-verified customers only); they can visit a PennDOT driver’s license center, have their documents verified and imaged, pay the one-time fee, and have their REAL ID product mailed to them within 15 business days; or they can visit one of up to 13 REAL ID Centers and receive their REAL ID product over the counter at the time of service. REAL ID is optional for Pennsylvania residents. A federally accepted form of identification (whether it is the forthcoming Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. Passport/Passport Card, or a military ID) must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building on and after Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID, and PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs. REAL ID-compliant products are marked with a gold star in the upper right corner; standard-issue (noncompliant) products include the phrase “Not for REAL ID Purposes,” per federal regulations. Sample images can be viewed at www.penndot.gov. More information about REAL ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions and information on documents required for REAL ID, can be found at www.penndot.gov/REALID.

Forming again in 2007, the group performed “America” for the benefit of Operation Troop Appreciation (OTA), established in 2004 by Kristen Holloway, whose parents sing with the group. At that time, through numerous performances, the group raised more than $20,000 for OTA, which provides wish list items for troops deployed around the world, as well as home essentials for returning veterans. BACC has also presented
“America” for the benefit of the Travis Manion Foundation, whose namesake is a young Marine who was killed while serving America in Iraq in 2007. The foundation’s mission is to empower returning veterans and families of the fallen in character development. A show that combines the talents of a cast and crew with all abilities will be featured as SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics present “The Granny Awards” on Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. The show is the first one being presented at SALT since the merger of Acting Antics and SALT in November 2018. Acting Antics was founded in January 2007 by Cindy Schneider as a way to provide unique opportunities for children, teenagers and adults who have difficulty with social skills or have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Prior to the merger, Acting Antics was searching for a performance space. “The Granny Awards” features a diverse cast and crew with and without special needs, including performers from the Musical Theatre Master Class of Acting Antics. The class started in January at SALT and is culminating with the live performances. “The Granny Awards,” a musical fairy tale, tells the story of Granny, who has retired from show business and will be honoring all of her favorite fairy tale characters, such as Best Female and Male Vocalist and Best Viliain. She will also name the Best Dramatic Scene and Best Choreography. In addition to Granny, featured characters include Snow White, Jack of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Cinderella and her prince, Jack and Jill, the Three Little Pigs, the Fairy Godmother and more. Additionally, the Big Bad Wolf will try to steal the treasured Granny Award throughout the show. “The Granny Awards” will be performed at SALT on March 29 at 7 p.m. as a full dress rehearsal for the public. On Saturday, March 30, at 7 p.m. there will be a gala fundraiser performance, including a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and more. A matinee open to the public will be offered on March 31 at 2 p.m. Proceeds from ticket sales will help fund Acting Antics and SALT as they continue to expand programming. All performances offer reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at www.saltpa.com /grannyawards. For more information about Acting Antics, readers may email info@actingantics.org or visit www.actingantics.org or www.facebook.com/actinganticsinc. More information about SALT Performing Arts is available at www.saltpa.com. and www.face book.com/saltperformingarts.
