ChesCo Search Dogs seek to find the lost or the missing
BY FRANCINE FULTONMembers of the ChesCo Search Dogs team never know when they will get the call. Whether it be to search for a lost hiker or a missing child, the dogs and their handlers are ready to be dispatched wherever they are needed.
ChesCo Search Dogs is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to training and providing trained K-9 teams to help find missing and lost persons and to detect human remains. ChesCo Search Dogs has more than 20 K-9s and their handlers in various stages of training who provide free ground search services to locate lost or missing persons in Chester County and throughout eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and northern Delaware.
“A lot of times the person is missing but not lost, and there is no contact. We go out regardless,” said team president Keith Studnick, who is the owner of a trained search dog named Hunter, a golden retriever.
Studnick emphasized that the team only goes out to search when requested by a law enforcement agency. “It could be anyone who has jurisdiction, local police, state police, a state game warden or federal park ranger. We can’t go out for families,” he said, noting that the team had 22 calls in 2023, with three this year to date.
Past assignments have included searching for youngsters with autism, elderly residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s or hikers lost in the woods. The teams are
also involved with finding those who are deceased, including those people who have died by suicide. However, the team does not get involved in finding escaped criminals. For example, they were not part of the search for Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from the Chester County Prison and was hiding for nearly two weeks in the Chester County terrain before being captured by law enforcement. “We do not (get involved with) criminal activity. We did not search for Cavalcante,” Studnick stated. “We are looking
for people who are not trying to run away. Police dogs are looking for people who may not want to be found.”
Unlike Yoda, a police-trained Belgian Malinois that helped to take down Cavalcante, ChesCo Search Dogs are trained not to bite for their own safety. “We are looking for kids on the spectrum or elderly people with dementia or Alzheimer’s, and you don’t know how the person will react when the dog finds them,” Studnick pointed out.

Through getaways, PA Family Travel Fair brings people together
BY JEFF FALKSometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.
The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.
“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania.
“It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to
get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

American Legion to host open house
BY FRANCINE FULTONCommunity members are invited to visit Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537 in Morgantown during an open house set for Saturday, April 20. The Legion will open at noon, and special events will take place from 1 to 6 p.m.
The first-time event is designed to encourage new members to join and to acquaint the public with the Legion’s activities. “The goal is to get people familiar with the Legion,” said Linda Jacobs,
historian, noting that information will be available at the event for those who would be interested in membership. “We will have food, entertainment and music.”
Live DJ entertainment will be provided by Sir Charles Distinctive Entertainment & DJ Services. Stand-up comedian Alan Massenburg will be featured from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. Food will be offered for sale by Russo’s Gourmet Foods & Market, an Italian market in Wyomissing. Also featured will be a cornhole tournament as

well as a silent auction and a Chinese auction. Auction items will include gift cards, gift baskets and power tools that have been donated by Lezzer Lumber of Green Hills.
Proceeds from the food sales and auctions will benefit the Behavioral Health & Wellness Center, a nonprofit organization that addresses mental health, addiction and recovery. The center was founded by Dave and Michelle Deavitt. To learn more, visit www .wellnessvr.org or search for “Behavioral Health and Wellness Center VR” on Facebook.
Jacobs explained that the American Legion is a veterans’ organization, but social memberships are available to others. The
post also includes the Sons of the American Legion, which is for members whose parents served in the U.S. military; the ladies auxiliary; and the American Legion Riders motorcycle group.
Among its activities, the post awards an annual scholarship to a Twin Valley High School student, participates in Wreaths Across America and holds a Veterans Day ceremony, followed by a free dinner for veterans and their spouses. A color guard from the post provides a rifle salute and taps during Memorial Day ceremonies held in both Elverson and Morgantown. Also participating in the ceremonies are members of Boy Scout
Troop 37, which is sponsored by the American Legion.
The post offers various social events, including karaoke and trivia nights and open pool nights. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
One of the most popular events hosted by the post is its monthly chicken barbecue. The next chicken barbecue will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. until sold out. The auxiliary will also hold its annual Mother’s Day flower sale that day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Annual Legion-sponsored events that are open to the community include an Easter egg hunt and Christmas parties for children and adults. The post is also home
to a Little Free Library. American Legion Post 537 is located at 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown. For more information about the post, the upcoming open house, club activities and membership, call 610-286-5920, visit www .legionpost537.com or search for “Col. Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.
“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”
In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.
“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”
According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.
“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has hap -
More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. pened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”
The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.
“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

BY FRANCINE FULTONYoungsters are invited to take part in the 10th annual Children’s Trout Derby that is set for Saturday, April 20, at Historic Poole Forge. Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., with fishing slated for 9 a.m. to noon.
The free event will be held rain or shine.
No fishing license is required, and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Children will be divided into two age groups: ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 12. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded in both groups. “(The contest will be) ‘biggest fish caught and turned in first,’”
explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “If I have two children that turn in a 14-inch fish, the one that brings it to me first to be measured will get the prize.” She added that the winners will also receive trophies.
Food will be available for purchase during the day from Father and Son Barbecue. “They will have breakfast sandwiches, smoothies
and coffee,” Ekdahl said. “They will stay throughout the afternoon with food for purchase.”
The Conestoga Creek, which runs through the park, will be stocked by members of the Beartown Sportsman Association, who will also provide assistance at the derby.
“The Beartown Sportsman Association did a stocking for trout season, and they will stock again for the trout derby,” said Ekdahl, noting that about 500 trout will be placed into the stream by club members. “We fence (the fish) in at each end of the park. That keeps the fish there. Once it is over, we pull the fences out and anyone can fish.”
Ekdahl noted that between 150 and 180 youths take part in the annual event and that nearly all are able to catch a fish. “We have a lot of kids that go home with

full stringers - a line you hang your fish on,” she said, adding that children may also catch and release their fish if they choose.
Additionally, the Beartown Sportsman Association will hold its own derby on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon and the community is invited to attend. To learn more, message the club at www.facebook.com/ Beartownsportsmanassoc.

Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown), 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information, visit www.his toricpooleforge.org or www .facebook.com/pooleforge. Those with questions may email Ekdahl at hpf1940@ gmail.com.
Historic Poole Forge is a 26-acre site that includes an historic ironmaster’s mansion, a children’s playground, a picnic pavilion, a ball field, a nature trail, riparian buffers, wildflower meadows and gardens and a covered bridge that crosses the Conestoga Creek. The playground is open daily from dawn to dusk, and the grounds are open for hiking, dog walking, fishing, bicycling and picnicking. Swimming or tubing in the creek is not permitted.
comes for the group to provide assistance, it goes through the Pennsylvania Search and Rescue Council. “They give us a location to meet and our chief, Craig Snyder, will send out a call asking who has a ground team available and (provide) the nature of the call and location,” noted Studnick.
On a recent search, the team was dispatched to find a missing male in his 20s in Centralia, which is a two-hour drive for the volunteers. The searchers were warned of the danger of the situation because of the town’s underground fires that could open holes in the terrain. As it turns out, the man, who failed to provide his family with his location, was found safely with friends.
“A lot of our dogs get injured in training or during searches. My dog fell into a hole in the woods and got lame for a few weeks,” said Studnick, adding that Hunter is a Live Find Dog. “Hunter will look (at the beginning stages of the search). If it’s a week later, then they will send a HRD - human remains detection - dog, formerly known as a cadaver dog.”
He noted that different dogs on the team have their own strengths. “Hunter is awesome in cold weather,” Studnick stated. “But if it is too hot for him to work, we have some short-haired dogs that do well in the summer and can’t stand the winter. Pennsylvania has such diverse weather, and it works out that we have people with heavier-coated dogs and others that are much more suited to summer conditions.”
Ultimately, he added, the searchers hope to find the lost or missing person alive. “You want to help the community by finding that missing person, hopefully alive, and getting them home,” Studnick stated.

Kardia Robotics completes successful competition season
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Berks County-based Kardia Robotics team recently completed a successful competition season, culminating in its participation in the state FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) championship event held in March at Saucon Valley Middle School in Hellertown.
As part of the competition, FTC teams are asked to design, build and operate a robot that is created to complete a specific task. For this year’s event, titled Centerstage, the robots had to stack game elements called pixels on a vertical board to create patterns. The Kardia Robotics team paired up with another robotics team in what is called an alliance.
“We did better than we had ever done in our team’s history. The kids did amazing, and we were able to go undefeated in the qualifier matches, finishing as the No. 1 seed overall,” reported Tim Tam, one of the team coaches. “Entering playoffs, we had a great alliance assembled. However, due to a number of factors, including a 10-point penalty on our alliance partner, we fell just short of advancing to the finals. We ended up losing by six points.”
To advance to states, the team, which is composed of middle and high school students from the Kardia Learning Center, a Christian homeschool group, competed at the FTC state qualifier held in January at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster. They
also competed at event in February at Coatesville Area Senior High School, where they won in the Inspire Award. According to www .firstinspires.org, the award is given to the team “that best embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FIRST Tech Challenge program.”
“In Coatesville, we had a great competition both on the field as well as in the judges’ room. We went undefeated in the qualifier matches and advanced to the finals as one of the alliance captains but then lost to the top team,” Tam noted. “However, we were also able to win the Inspire Award - the highest overall award - for the first time in four years.”
Tam added that while the team members hoped to advance to the finals at states, they were pleased with the overall outcome of the season.
“Despite the disappointing ending, the team exceeded all expectations, and we are already looking forward to the offseason,” said Tam. “(The team may) have some local outreaches with elementary schools, as well as other projects we have been putting on the back burner during our preparation for states. (We are also) looking ahead to next season where we hope to maybe even do better.”
“Thankfully. we’ll not be losing any students to graduation,” he added.
