TVHS To Stage “Through The Years: A Musical Revue” BY FRANCINE FULTON

ince 2006, Twin Valley High School (TVHS) has presented a spring musical ranging from “Anything Goes” in 2010 to “Footloose” in 2015 to “The Addams Family” in 2019. To celebrate the past performances, this year’s spring musical at TVHS will be “Through the Years: A Musical Revue,” a show that will feature musical numbers from every show performed at TVHS over the past 15 years. There will also be a sneak peek into next year’s show. “Through the Years: A Musical Revue” will be staged on Thursday, April 22, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 24, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m. TVHS librarian Jessie Miller, show producer, noted that the students have adapted to COVID-19 restrictions while preparing for the production. “We followed social distance guidelines this year with rehearsals and staging this musical. The kids have been great sports and

“We are really looking forward to having the cast and crew perform in front of a live audience again.” Musical numbers will include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from “Oklahoma!” (2006); “Lullaby of Broadway” from “42nd Street” (2017); and “Once and for All” from “Newsies” (2020). TVHS agriculture science teacher Nicole Weaver, show director, noted that TVHS’ 2020 production of “Newsies” was recorded and presented virtually. “We are really

looking forward to having the cast and crew perform in front of a live audience again,” said Weaver. “They miss it so much, and they have really been deprived of a lot the past year - especially the seniors. We are so excited for them to have this opportunity to act and sing for an audience.” “What’s really great about this year is that instead of having just a few lead roles, we were able to feature over 20 students in lead roles and solos,” Miller added. In addition to Weaver and Miller, the production staff includes stage director Adam Sanders, choral director Reid Simmons, prop/costume manager Andrea Lydon and light and sound technician Jimmy Kuhn. Becka Malanios is co-choreographer along with Weaver. TVHS is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. Tickets can be ordered online at https://tvhs -theater-arts-club-spring-musical .cheddarup.com. There is also a link to order tickets at www.tvsd.org.

Those interested in providing a forever home to a cat or kitten currently in foster care are invited to check out the Lifesaving Pet Rescue of Chester County Facebook page started by Josie Davis. Davis, who fosters pets and volunteers with Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, decided to start the page as a way to find homes for her rescues. Currently, Davis fosters cats for several local organizations, including Angie’s Stray Foundation, founded by Ruth Jenkins of Oxford.

have really adapted to this crazy situation that we are in,” she stated. “We started out the season knowing that we could only have 30 people in the audience each night. Luckily, the restrictions have been lifted, so know we are able to have about 200 each night with the audience members sitting 6 feet apart.”

According to Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, the connection between the organization and Anchored Ministries in Elverson began in the spring of 2018 with a weekly newsletter called the Macaroni Kid. Barbara Vargas, then the editor of the newsletter, reached out to CrossNet. “(She) mentioned a clothing ministry,” recalled Kerstetter, noting that the ministry was Anchored Ministries. Kerstetter soon met with Erika Kanter, director of Anchored Ministries, and in

late summer 2018, the two ministries partnered for CrossNet’s annual backpack giveaway, with Kanter bringing a clothing trailer to the event. Now, the two ministries partner regularly for the community meal at CrossNet Ministries held the fourth Monday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. A clothing trailer from Anchored will also be at the Blue Ball Elementary Community Connection event on Thursday, May 6, at the school on Ewell Road in East Earl from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

I have been fostering for three years and Ruth has been doing this for 20 years. I do the Lifesaving Pet Rescue (page) to let the community know who is available for adoption.” Featured on the page right now is Teddy Bear, an older cat that is up to date with vaccines, has been neutered and is feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FELV) negative. “He was found living under a porch,” said Davis. “He is a sweet old boy who loves to sit next to you on the couch. He uses the litter box without issue. Teddy deserves a forever home; I hope he can find his person.” Also available is Holly, who

is 7 months old, spayed and up to date with vaccines. “She has been in foster care since she was very young. She is really in need of a forever home,” said Davis. Those interested in adopting Teddy or Holly must complete an application and provide personal and veterinarian references. Those who adopt a pet are asked to make a suggested donation. “I have an application (through) Angie’s Stray Foundation,” Davis noted. The Facebook page also features other animals offered for adoption through the Brandywine Valley SPCA, among other rescue groups. “I try to help network,” noted Davis. “You want to see (the pets) do well.” Davis said that because of COVID-19, the kitten population has increased because some spay and neuter programs ceased operations dur-

ing the pandemic. “Last year was so bad. I had (so many foster) kittens,” she shared. “I just adopted out my last kitten from last season. I had her (since) September and was super attached, but I have my own cats and there are always more cats to foster.” She encourages those who feed feral cats to take part in local Trap-Neuter-Release Teddy Bear is currently in foster (TNR) programs. “Helping get care and is available for adoption Josie Davis started the Lifesaving Pet Resthe spay/neuter message out through the Lifesaving Pet Rescue cue of Chester County Facebook page as a there could save millions of of Chester County Facebook page. innocent lives by reducing the way to find homes for her rescues. population and preventing suffering of kittens born to feral cats,” she stated. general store, inc. general store, inc. History, Craft Classes Slated At Historic Joanna Furnace Those with an interest in history or looking to learn a new craft are invited to take part in educational classes being offered at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, on select dates from April through August. A class will also be offered for those considering becoming a tour guide at the historic site as part of the education/interpretation team. Classes will take place in person at the site. The programs are open to those age 16 and over. Instructors will be volunteer educators with the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA). “Learn to Be a Joanna Furnace Tour Guide” will be offered on Tuesday, April 27, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The class will focus on hands-on training inside the historic Joanna Furnace buildings provided by various HCVHA interpreters. “(Participants) will get a nice binder of information that will become their own study guide,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “If the class date doesn’t suit people, Hay Creek is willing to work out other arrangements to get them to be trained and comfortable to be a tour guide here.” A class on 18th- and 19th-

century metal casting will be offered on Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees will make a sand mold by using a pattern and then fill it will molten aluminum. They will then be able to take the casting home with them. “This is only open to a small group, so individuals can set up a time to learn the craft,”

Zerr said. “Our resident molder, Jack Woods, is at Joanna Furnace every Thursday.” Two hands-on cooking classes will also be offered, including “Open Fire Cooking” on Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and “Bake Oven Demonstrating” on Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. See HCVHA pg 6

After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over. By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation. “I thought how awesome it would be for

others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment. Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer

and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses. “We will offset final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female veterans. Mike pointed out that when most people think of veterans, they picture a man in a dress uniform, but there are many female veterans like Jennifer, who served in communications and security in Alaska from 1995 to 1999. Mike said that the rides at the kickoff event will follow a protocol similar to the MakeA-Wish Convoy but with hot rods and motorcycles rather than trucks. “(Cars) will go 20 miles in one direction, and bikes will go 30 miles in another direction,” he explained. In addition to product and craft vendors, there will be a Chinese auction featuring a saddlebag for a 2017 Harley Davidson Breakout. Live entertainment will be provided by Easily Amused, a Southern rock cover band called Buckskin Whiskey, and Dirt Road Redemption. Food items for purchase will be provided by Holy Smoked Meats, Fink’s French Fries, and Auntie Anne’s, among others. Team Jennifer Cahill will sell hot dogs in the pavilion. Jennifer and Mike noted that they would like to raise more than $15,000 from the event. Individuals and families in Chester County who are facing challenges in paying rent and utility bills brought on by the pandemic can receive help through the Chester County Emergency Rent & Utility Assistance Program. Chester County has received $34.5 million from the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to help cover emergency rental and utility bills for individuals and families who have been severely impacted by COVID-19. The emergency rent and utility funding enables those who qualify to stay in their homes and cover basic living expenses. The grants are available to individuals and families in Chester County who are obligated to pay rent and who qualify for unemployment or have experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or

experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19; demonstrate a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability; and have a household income at or below 80% of the area median. For a family of one, the median is $54,150, and for a family of four, the amount is $77,300. These amounts may be subject to change. Those who are eligible can use the emergency rent and utility funding to pay for outstanding rent, electricity, gas, water, and sewer, as well as energy costs such as fuel oil or propane, over a 15-month period. To apply for funding, residents should call 211 and request rent and utility assistance. Three housing organizations - Friends Association, the Housing Authority of Chester County, and Open Hearth Inc. - will work with the applicants to process payments to landlords and utility providers.
