the Summerfield Handstitchers, a group of sewing, knitting and crocheting enthusiasts who are residents of the Summerfield at Elverson housing development. The group, previously known as the Summerfield Knitters, formed in 1997 when five Summerfield residents gathered to knit items for charity. Since then, the group has expanded its focus and now has about 15 members. “We call it hand stitchers because it’s not just knitting and crocheting. It’s anything you (make) with your hands,” explained Pauline Menger, group facilitator. “You have to live here or formerly live here (to be a member). We have some members who have moved to Tel Hai and come back.”

Members meet on the third Thursday of the month in the community center at Summerfield, where they hold a business meeting and gather the items they have created. “We make the items at home and bring them in (to display),” said Menger. They also recite a prayer, asking for blessings on their work and for the charitable organizations they will be making items for. One of the group’s efforts includes providing prayer shawls to Summerfield residents who are sick, shut in, grieving the death of a loved one or expecting a baby. Since the beginning of the Summerfield prayer shawl ministry in 2006, the group has distributed 196 shawls or lap covers. See Summerfield Handstitchers pg 2

Member Joanne Ahern makes various items for the Coatesville VA, including dignity bibs for men, which are shirt fronts that they can slip over their heads. They can be easily changed in case of spills. She also makes sensory placemats for wheelchairs users. “ When they are sitting in their wheelchairs, people love to keep their fingers busy,” Ahern said, noting that she delivers items to the VA

According to the group’s year-end report for 2021, the Summerfield Handstitchers made a total of 223 pieces, which were given out to the various charities. The members also take part in two outings per year,

including a Christmas luncheon. “ We go to lunch twice a year - in June and December. We try to make it a field trip, too,” Menger said. “ We’ve been to the (local) alpaca farm and to different specialty yarn places like the Lancaster Yarn Shop in Kitchen Kettle Village. We go to lunch and then to the (location).” Members pay a nominal yearly fee to participate. The money is used to purchase

Healthy Kids from pg 1 run for second- and thirdgraders, a 1-mile run for fourth- and fifth-graders, and a 1-mile run for sixththrough eighth-graders. Races are run in order starting with the youngest participants. This is the second year that the HKRS has been held at the park. Previously, the program took place at Twin Valley Middle School. “It is an occasion for kids to interface with kids they might not see

regularly. Even for the parents, it’s nice to meet different people,” said Michele Raymond, who is running the local HKRS with Shaun McNary. She said about 42 youngsters participated when the series was last offered in the spring of 2021. “We elected not to do it in the fall,” Raymond noted. “Right now, I have 27 registered.” At the end of the series, the

boys and girls who accumulate the most points in their respective distances are awarded trophies. All participants will receive a medal on May 22. “We have an app called Myles, and we are able to track the times,” Raymond explained. “Every year we get better as an organization. (The app) is our latest (update). Parents have access to the app to see how their kids did.” Raymond noted that some

participants are competitive runners, while others enjoy running just for fun. “It’s more like a fun run for the younger kids, but for the older kids it’s an opportunity to improve against their peers,” she stated. “All of these running series have a different point of view. This is just a community run-type atmosphere. We want to be very encouraging.” Additionally, volunteers are needed to help out each week during the runs. “I call them encouragers. When kids are doing a quarter, half or a full mile, we need people to encourage the kids all the way around (the course),” she said. “That’s very important.” For more information and to register and to learn about volunteer opportunities, visit www.runsignup.com/ hkrselverson or www.face book.com/hkrselverson. Registration is ongoing. Parents can register their children online or in person on the day of the events.

Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a local nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, will present a virtual fundraising event, themed “Celebration of Life,” on Monday, May 2, beginning at 7 p.m. Following a slideshow that details the programs and services offered by CCWS, the program will include comments by board members and Myriam Ruager, CCWS executive director. The presentation will also feature three client testimonies from those who have benefited from the services offered at CCWS. The program, which will last approximately one hour, will also feature a special announcement. “We are changing our name. The name change will be presented that night and, after 37 years, we will not be CCWS anymore,” said Nicole Crist, CCWS development director. Singers Announce Tour Schedule LeeP Productions will present “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond throughout 2022. “Then Sings My Soul” is an original musical presentation featuring professional vocalists as well as accompanists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy

Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind over 30 well-known hymns and songs of faith, many of which were made famous by or were written by people who accepted Jesus at Graham’s Crusades. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing.

“Then Sings My Soul” features Lancaster locals Daniel Gorham, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman. Katrina King, an 18-year-old New Holland-area resident, is the pianist. Now in its fourth year of touring, “Then Sings My Soul” premiered in August 2018 in a barn at writer and producer Prickett’s family business, The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks. Following a monthslong search, Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline appointed Erik Walschburger as deputy county administrator. He will support county administrator Bobby Kagel in the supervision and direction of all county government programs and administrative operations. Walschburger comes to the Commissioners’ Office from the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, where he most recently led the appellate unit and prepared and presented cases before the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme Courts. He previously oversaw all of the diversionary programs and Treatment Courts for the District Attorney’s Office. Currently, Kagel has 21 department heads reporting to him. By adding Walschburger, he will have fewer direct reports. The change will allow him to devote more time and attention to working with the commissioners on issues like trying to reopen two recently closed county hospitals and ensuring that elections run smoothly. Walschburger received his law degree from Widener University after graduating from Temple University.

Chester County Commissioners Seek Spending Proposals Chester County has begun accepting applications for funding requests from a pool of nearly $102 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money. County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline said the grants are intended to provide an infusion of resources to meet pandemic recovery needs and to accelerate the ongoing rebuilding of Chester County’s economy. Municipalities, public authorities, small businesses and nonprofit organizations in Chester County, as well as organizations that provide substantial service to the county, are invited to submit their proposals. A committee of 36 volunteers,

half county employees and half residents, has created a system, following ARPA guidelines, to review and prioritize proposals. Six teams will address each priority for ARPA funding. The teams will evaluate the proposals and present their recommendations to the commissioners for final consideration. The commissioners acknowledge worthy applications could exceed the available $102 million. That means in addition to selecting winning proposals, the committee could, in some cases, approve an application, but recommend funding less than the amount requested. In addition, awards may include
