SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL XXIX • NO 13
14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Honey Brook Speedway racers invite the community to drop off new or gently used shoes at the drop-off bin at the track. It will be on-site until June 5.
Students ages 4 and a half through 15 race quarter midget race cars at the Honey Brook Speedway.
In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children.
Shoe Donation Drive To Benefit Honey Brook Speedway BY FRANCINE FULTON
ew and gently used footwear of all varieties, including boots, sandals, flip-flops, heels and sneakers, is being collected as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Honey Brook Speedway, a nonprofit organization that offers quarter midget track racing for children from age 4 and a half to 15. From now through Saturday, June 5, shoe donations can be dropped off at an outdoor collection box located at the speedway, 2177 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Shoe donation bins are also available during operating hours at The She Shed, 3605 E. Main St., Morgantown, and at Nuse’s Deli, 3160 W. Main St., Morgantown. A special shoe drop-off event will take place on Sunday, May 2, from noon to 3 p.m. at the racetrack. There will be a table set up by the snack shack where the shoes can be placed; a drive-through, contactless dropoff will also be offered that day. All donated shoes will be given to Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit organization that repurposes the shoes. According to www.funds2orgs.com,
Drivers are required to be members of the United States Auto Club (USAC) to participate. “A few times throughout the year we have ‘Arrive and Drive’ (events) where anyone can come out and try it,” said Carrie Kempton, who is the speedway’s head of tower and is in charge of race registration, lineups and scoring. “This is a chance to try it before you buy (the car and equipment).” While there are wrecks, the children wear safety equipment to prevent injury. “They are in a fire suit, a racing-certified helmet, a fivepoint (seat harness) and gloves,” said Kempton. “This is not like going to the go-kart track. They (wear) legitimate racing gear.” Rookie racers travel at speeds up to 25 miles per hour, while senior division racers can race up to 45 miles per hour on the asphalt track. “They are very competitive. Some of the kids have such a passion for racing,” Hanna added. For more information about Honey Brook Speedway or the shoe collection drive, visit www.face book.com/honeybrookspeedway. More information about the track and the event schedule can be found at www.honeybrookspeedway.com.

According to Bryant Glick, who is organizing the first Pickin’ in the Park with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy, the event was in the planning stages before the COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020. “This has been in the works for 16 months,” said Glick. “Terre Hill borough is graciously allowing us to hold this,” he added.

the shoes are sold to microentrepreneurs for a nominal cost. Micro-entrepreneurs then mark up the shoes and sell them in their local communities for a fraction of the original price, but still for a profit. Proceeds from the shoe collection will help out with track maintenance and will help to finance the cost of awards and the end-of year banquet. The speedway is also looking for a new home. “The land will be developed, and we have until the end of 2021 to find a new place for the kids to race,” explained shoe collection organizer Sarah Hanna, whose children race at the venue. “We are trying to find leads on relocating, so as of now, the kids may have to join (other local tracks).” The Honey Brook Speedway began in 1958 as the Doylestown Quarter Midget Club (DQMC), located in Doylestown, and moved to the Honey Brook location in the early 1980s. Races are held on Sundays at noon and on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Food and beverages are available during events from the snack shack.
GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

The students were honored by the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges during a virtual event broadcast April 15, Community College Day. Wilson, a working mother with five young boys, lost her job for two months due to COVID-19. At Delaware County Community College, she was president of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society’s Beta Psi Pi Chester County chapter and served as a peer mentor helping other students. With the help of her children, she led a neighborhood effort in Honey Brook to make and deliver meals to homebound individuals due to the coronavirus, and she led a toy drive donation for children in her neighborhood last Christmas. For her academic prowess, community spirit and tenacity, she not only was named an All-PA scholar, but also is one of 50 Pennsylvania Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team scholars, each of whom received $1,000, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. In addition, her college’s Student Affairs Committee selected Wilson to be the college’s 2021 Optimist Award winner. A history major, Wilson plans to transfer to West Chester University and major in history as a step toward her goal of obtaining a doctorate and teaching history. Additionally, once her children finish school, she plans to earn a law degree and become a public interest attorney, an advocate for families, children and individuals experiencing hardship.

named for a living person, it can be named for someone with ties to the history of the area. “It could be an historic landowner’s name or have some significance to the geography of the area,” said Deischer-Eddy. Local students are also invited to submit an entry. “Maybe schoolchildren can go to the library and do research and come with a name,” Deischer-Eddy noted. According to a map of the area, the East Branch and West Branch of the Brandywine Creek flow southeast for approximately 27 miles and 33 miles, respectively, to their confluence about 10 miles southeast of Coatesville. The combined waters of the two branches continue to flow southeast through Chester County, past Chadds Ford, and then enter the state of Delaware about 5 miles north of Wilmington. “(Designating a name) matters because small streams are often unnamed and therefore unmapped. Unmapped streams tend to be unprotected,” Deischer-Eddy added. The HBCP, established in 2008 as an association of businesses, residents and local government officials, meets monthly to facilitate communication, share resources and work together with a mission “to enhance and promote greater community spirit in the Honey Brook area.” For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/hb partnership.org.
April is National Volunteer Month, and volunteering as a family is a great way for parents to instill their values in their youngsters while strengthening the communities in which those children live. Volunteering may also provide additional benefits, such as mental health benefits. Family-friendly volunteering opportunities abound. Whether it is helping those in need, exploring one’s inner artist, or helping to keep local parks clean, the opportunities for families to give back together are numerous. The role of charitable organizations that feed those in need has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The economic fallout of the pandemic has been significant, as tens of millions of people lost their jobs and, subsequently, their ability to feed themselves and their families. Local food banks stepped in to feed those families, and local organizations may still be in need of volunteers to help prepare, deliver, and serve food. Volunteering at a local food bank or soup kitchen is one way for parents to show their children that they have a lot to be thankful for while instilling in them a sense of responsibility to community members in need. Art can be as beneficial to its creators as it is to those who appreciate it. For instance, according to a report from Americans for the Arts, art education can strengthen prob-
lem-solving and critical thinking skills. Art also encourages children to innovate, and it is fun to create. Families can share their artwork with others to brighten their day. For example, the New Jersey-based organization Color A Smile distributes cheerful drawings to senior citizens and overseas troops, among others. Local park cleanups work toward making the great outdoors pristine and pollutionfree. Such cleanups, which are a fun way to get outdoors, also provide opportunities for parents to teach children about the environment and the importance of protecting it.

As part of the Name the Brook contest, the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP) is seeking the community’s help in coming up with a name for a 1.5-mile-long stream that originates in Honey Brook Borough and travels through both the borough and Honey Brook Township. The waters from the small stream, which is officially designated as “Unnamed Tributary #4 to an Unnamed Tributary of the West Branch of the Brandywine Creek,” eventually make their way to Wilmington, Del. “The (contest’s purpose) is to bring awareness to the fact that water that starts in Honey Brook winds up as someone’s drinking water in Wilmington,” said Name the Brook committee member Kristy Deischer-Eddy, administrative assistant for Honey Brook Township. “Honey Brook is known as ‘the headwaters of the
Brandywine,’” added committee member Jennifer Simmet. “Giving this stream a name seems like a fitting activity to bring the community together in a positive way.” Contest entries can be submitted at www.hbpartnership .org through Friday, May 14. With the support of the Honey Brook Township Board of Supervisors and the Honey Brook Borough Council, the Name the Brook Committee will select the best ideas from among the submissions and present a list of stream names for the community to vote on. Votes will be collected between Monday, May 17, and Tuesday, June 1, at ballot boxes located throughout the community. The winner will be announced and submitted on an application to the United States Geographic Names Board in June. Once the name is approved, the HBCP will share the news with the community. Pickin’ In The Park from pg 1 The first Pickin’ in the Park event, which will include the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, an antique and artisan swap meet, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the Terre Hill Community Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds of the event will be
donated to the Weaverland Valley Fire Department. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine. “We wanted to do a steak competition (with) an antiques side for Bill and Linda, (who own Tannery Antiques),” explained Glick, who worked with a steak

competition organizer to promote the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, which will include more than 40 professional grilling teams vying for a $1,000 first-place prize. A chicken wing contest will be held as well. A nominal fee is required to enter, and a cash prize will be awarded to the winner. The antique and artisan swap meet, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include more than 35 vendors. Glick noted that an antiques event called Oddities Bazaar Market will be held in Adamstown in conjunction with Pickin’ in the Park. The Oddities Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Renninger’s Antiques Market, 2500 N. Reading Road, Adamstown. “We will have a variety of food,” said Glick of the more than 10 food trucks and vendors lined up to offer food for purchase at Terre Hill Community Park. Among those will be Hen House Grilling,
Lickity Split, Auntie Anne’s, and Holy Smoked Meats. In addition, the Garden Spot High School Grassland FFA will sell milkshakes, and LANCO Performing Arts will sell food items from the concession stand in the main park pavilion. Musical entertianment by Dane Fox will begin at after noon. Glick emphasized that the event was designed to appeal to people of all ages. “It is family-friendly,” said Glick, noting that the Terre Hill Timbers playground is located in the park. “It’s not just an antique event and craft show and steak competition. We wanted to do an event that encompassed family.” Questions about the steak cook-off may be directed to PickinintheParkPA@gmail.co m. Individuals wishing to enter the wing competition may do so at that email as well. Readers with questions about the antiques swap meet may call 732-239-1363 or email lindadib@live.com.

Chester County Launches Teen Talk Line Chester County teens now have a new tool for mental health and wellness. A Teen Talk Line, targeting 12- to 18year-olds, is now taking calls and texts to support young people who are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, sad, isolated or confused. The call center, which is live from 3 to 7 p.m., will use two numbers. The call line is 855852-TEEN (8336) and the text line is 484-362-9515. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that young people may be more vulnerable to stress and developing mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Teen talk and text lines are tools for supporting youths across the country. Chester County’s Teen Talk Line is contracted through the county’s Office of Mental Health and will be provided by Access Services, a nonprofit organization that runs other mental health programs, including a Teen Talk Line in Montgomery County. The line will operate after school and in the early evening hours, which are the peak hours for family and other conflicts. Individuals who call after hours will
receive an automated message and will be directed to the Valley Creek Crisis Intervention Center in Exton for immediate support when needed. Connecting with teens around concerns and stressors while they are still manageable can support skill building, resilience and an understanding of community resources. Supervised call-takers are trained to apply active listening skills via phone and text, to recognize risks and to offer coping strategies and problem solving, among other engagement techniques and competencies. Chester County’s Teen Talk Line will work with Valley Creek Crisis Intervention Center to ensure seamless referral to the Mobile Crisis program for youths in need of immediate or higher-level support. In addition, the program will reach out to schools and community organizations to host virtual events and to support the Teen Talk Line. For more information, visit http://accessservices.org or contact Kerri Hoogenhuis, assistant director of peer support and Teen Talk Lines, at Access Services at KHoogen huis@accessservices.org.

prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and pro-
vide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolfouting.com. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win

Association Earns Honor The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) presented a County Bar Recognition Award virtually to the Chester County Bar Association during the 55th annual seminar of the Conference of County Bar Leaders on Feb. 25. Recognized for its Chester County evictions court prevention program, the Chester County Bar Association is one of 20 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system, or community. The Chester County Bar Foundation supported the Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children this past year as the Friends Association launched an evictions court prevention program in Chester County. A grant was given to support this new venture, which is designed to help pro se litigants at the magisterial district court level. In addition, a number of Chester County Bar Association members did pro bono work for the program. The association hopes to help the courts and the people of Chester County to navigate the unprecedented wave of people facing evictions that may occur once the moratoriums are lifted.
