Community Invited To Name The Brook BY FRANCINE FULTON

As part of the Name the Brook contest, the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP) is seeking the community’s help in coming up with a name for a 1.5-mile-long stream that originates in Honey Brook Borough and travels through both the borough and Honey Brook Township.

The stewards of the newly installed Little Free Library at West Nantmeal Recreation Area are Evan and Lana Pellegrino and thier son, Declan.

Little Free Library Installed At West Nantmeal Park new Little Free Library (LFL) has been installed at the West Nantmeal Township Recreation Area, where community members are invited to take a book or bring a book to share. The library’s stewards are Evan and Lana Pellegrino, who are both avid readers and wanted to share their love of books with others. “We moved to Elverson a year ago, and we started to come to the park and thought it would be really good idea to have a Little Free Library for (park visitors) because there are many great things here at the park,” said Lana. “We want to encourage people to read,” Lana said, adding, “(Our son, Declan,) is just learning to read at

the age of 6.” The couple bought a kit for the book exchange box from the LFL organization, and it was installed by township workers near the park’s tennis courts in a spot that is under 24-hour video surveillance. The LFL contains a plaque that features a quote by Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life.” “We went to the township in the fall of 2020, and it was approved earlier this year,” said Evan. “I bought the post and the kit and dropped them off and (the township) took care of everything.” After the LFL was put into place, Lana announced the installation on various Facebook pages. She and Evan stocked the LFL initially, but

they hope that community members and neighbors will keep the library filled. She noted that one of the family’s favorite LFLs is located at Crow’s Nest Preserve in Elverson. “It’s really cool. When you are hiking through a field and through the woods, you come to this big clearing. Someone cleared space, added Adirondack chairs and put in a Little Free Library,” Lana said. “You have to do the hike to find it. “ Lana noted that LFLs were the go-to place to get books during the pandemic when many libraries were closed or had limited services. “When COVID hit, many Little Free Libraries were turned into the free food pantries because of so many people losing their jobs and being food insecure,” Lana said.

Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) is a national program designed to inspire young people to live a healthy, active life by taking part in outdoor running events in their neighborhoods. Locally, the program is being offered on Sundays at 2 p.m. at the West Nantmeal Township Recreation Area, located next to the township building at 455 N. Manor Road (Route 82), Elverson. The series began on April 18 and will conclude on May 16.

plete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.”

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal

is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully com-

Registration is ongoing. “People can register (their children) online or in person,” said Michele Raymond, community coordinator, who is running the local HKRS for the first time. During the weekly events, youths compete in their designated age or grade level division: 50-yard dash for prekindergarten students, those ages 2 and 3; a 75-yard dash for prekindergarten students, children ages 4 and 5; a quarter-mile race for kindergarten through first-grade students; a half-mile run for secondand third-graders; a 1-mile run for fourth- and fifth-graders; and a 1-mile run for sixth- through eighth-graders. “The first week we had 22 registered, and 10 showed up that day, so we had 32 (runners),” Raymond reported. “The second week we had 35 kids.” She said that races are run in order starting with the youngest participants. The races are timed to allow the children to know how well they did. “Last week for the (75-yard dash), we broke it up by

girls and boys because there were too many for one heat,” Raymond noted, “so we had a girls’ heat and a boys’ heat.” This is the first time that the HKRS has been held at the park. Previously, the program took place at Twin Valley Middle School. “When it was at its height, (there were) 100 kids (involved),” Raymond said. “I took it over for spring last year, but (because of the pandemic), we did it virtually.” For the final session on May 16, there will be an awards ceremony. “We will give out medals for participants and acknowledge their scores,” Raymond said, adding, “Some kids are runners and some kids do it just for fun, but (everyone) enjoys being outside. It’s a good time.” For more information and to register, visit www.runsignup .com/hkrselverson. More information is also available at www.face book.com/hkrselverson. Some changes have been made to this year’s program because of the pandemic. According to a statement issued by Steve Long, HKRS founder, the organization is following the guidelines as suggested by the CDC, which include wearing a mask when not running, limiting the number of youngsters per race and providing hand sanitizer at registration. “We recognize and understand these are challenging times, but we are offering our runners and their families a safe experience while social distancing to teach kids effort, perseverance, persistence, sportsmanship, independence and grit,” Long stated. Children who cannot take part in an in-person race may consider a virtual alternative, the Virtual World Race. Learn more at www.HealthyKidsRunningSeries.org.

Senior Connections will meet at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, on Thursday, May 13. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by guest speaker Cora Hurst, a chalk artist, who will present a drawing with a story. People age 55 and over are welcome to attend.

According to a map of the area, the East Branch and West Branch of the Brandywine Creek flow southeast for approximately 27 miles and 33 miles, respectively, to their confluence about 10 miles southeast of Coatesville. The combined waters of the two branches continue to flow southeast through Chester County, past Chadds Ford, and then enter the state of Delaware about 5 miles north of Wilmington. “(Designating a name) matters because small streams are often unnamed and therefore unmapped. Unmapped streams tend to be unprotected,” DeischerEddy added. The HBCP, established in 2008 as an association of businesses, residents and local government officials, meets monthly to facilitate communication, share resources and work together with a mission “to enhance and promote greater community spirit in the Honey Brook area.” For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook .com/hbpartnership.org.

Senior Connections To Meet

Contest entries can be submitted at www.hbpartnership.org through Friday, May 14. With the support of the Honey Brook Township Board of Supervisors and the Honey Brook Borough Council, the Name the Brook Committee will select the best ideas from among the submissions and present a list of stream names for the community to vote on. Votes will be collected between Monday, May 17, and Tuesday, June 1, at ballot boxes located throughout the community. The winner will be announced and submitted on an application to the United States Geographic Names Board in June. Once the name is approved, the HBCP will share the news with the community. While the stream cannot be named for a living person, it can be named for someone with ties to the history of the area. “It could be an historic landowner’s name or have some significance to the geography of the area,” said Deischer-Eddy. Local students are also invited to submit an entry. “Maybe schoolchildren can go to the library and do research and come with a name,” Deischer-Eddy noted.

All-PA scholars are named by their colleges to the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, which requires students to maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average, to have completed at least 36 credits and to be about to graduate with an associate degree. The students were honored by the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges during a virtual event broadcast April 15, Community College Day. With the help of her children, she led a neighborhood effort in Honey Brook to make and deliver meals to homebound individuals due to the coronavirus, and she led a toy drive donation for children in her neighborhood last Christmas. For her academic prowess, community spirit and tenacity, she not only was named an All-PA scholar, but also is one of 50 Pennsylvania Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team scholars, each of whom received $1,000, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. In addition, her college’s Student Affairs Committee selected Wilson to be the college’s 2021 Optimist Award winner. A history major, Wilson plans to transfer to West Chester University and major in history as a step toward her goal of obtaining a doctorate and teaching history. Additionally, once her children finish school, she plans to earn a law degree and become a public interest attorney, an advocate for families, children and individuals experiencing hardship.

New and gently used footwear of all varieties, including boots, sandals, flipflops, heels and sneakers, is being collected as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Honey Brook Speedway, a nonprofit organization that offers quarter midget track racing for children from age 4 and a half to 15. From now through Saturday, June 5, shoe donations can be dropped off at an outdoor collection box located at the speedway, 2177 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Shoe donation bins are also available during operating hours at The She Shed, 3605 E. Main St., Morgantown, and at Nuse’s Deli, 3160 W. Main St., Morgantown. A special shoe drop-off event will take place on Sunday, May 2, from noon to 3 p.m. at the racetrack. There will be a table set up by the snack shack where the shoes can be placed; a drivethrough, contactless dropoff will also be offered that day. All donated shoes will be given to Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit organization that repurposes the shoes. According to www.funds2orgs.com, the shoes are sold to microentrepreneurs for a nominal cost. Micro-entrepreneurs then mark up the shoes and sell them in their local communities for a fraction of the original price, but still for a profit. Proceeds from the shoe collection will help out with track maintenance and will help to finance the cost of awards and the end-of year banquet. The speedway is also looking for a new home. “The land will be developed, and we have until the end of 2021 to find a

new place for the kids to race,” explained shoe collection organizer Sarah Hanna, whose children race at the venue. “We are trying to find leads on relocating, so as of now, the kids may have to join (other local tracks).” The Honey Brook Speedway began in Students ages 4 and a half through 1958 as the 15 race quarter midget race cars at the Honey Brook Speedway. The Birdsboro Street Fair, featuring free entertainment, music, children’s activities, food, a craft sale and displays by community organizations, will be held on Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro. The day will culminate with a Duck Derby at 4 p.m., when people will line the banks of the Hay Creek to watch hundreds of rubber ducks “race” toward the finish line. “Each duck ticket that is sold has a number that corresponds to a duck that will be placed in the race,” explained Lisa Kraljevich, fundraising chair for Boone Area Library, which is presenting the event. “Ducks are dumped by Birdsboro municipal workers into Hay Creek under the bridge at First and Water streets. As the ducks float towards the finish line, (the workers) follow behind the ducks in their hip waders to free any who get stuck along the way.” The first 11 ducks to cross the finish line and the very last duck to cross the finish line will be the winners. Prize recipients do not need to be present to win. Cash prizes will be awarded to the “sponsors” of the 12 ducks. Local businesses, including Pioneer Crossing Landfill; Bachman’s Roofing, Building and Remodeling Inc.; RAM Siding Company Inc.; Mountz Disposal Service; Uncle Jack’s Corner; and SuzieQ’s Breakfast and Lunch Café, have donated the prize money for the winners. Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, during its hours of operation: Mondays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays, 2 to 7 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Duck Derby tickets can also be purchased

at Happy Hands Consignment Shop, 347 W. Main St., Birdsboro. Tickets will also be available in the park the day of the event. Kraljevich noted that because of the pandemic, last year’s Street Fair was canceled, but the duck race was held virtually at a privately owned pool. “The first 12 ducks to enter the skimmer basket were the winners,” she said. “The video was available to view on Facebook and on the library’s website.” The following groups will provide entertainment: Old Fangled, an acoustic rock guitar duo, 11 a.m. to noon; Dance One Studio, noon to 1 p.m.; 1st Street Players theater group, 1 to 2 p.m.; Tri Valley Cheer, 2 to 3 p.m.; and banjo music with pastor Steve Simpson from St Paul’s United Church of Christ in Douglassville, 3 to 4 p.m. There will also be a disc jockey providing live music throughout the day. Miss Sarah, the children’s coordinator from the Boone Area Library, will present story time with a craft at 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. To coincide with the Street Fair, a coloring contest is being held for children age 12 and under. Any child who completes a coloring page and returns it before May 15 will have his or her name entered into a prize drawing for a gift basket. One winner will be randomly chosen on the day of the Street Fair. Coloring sheets can be picked up during library hours or downloaded from the “Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby” Facebook page. COVID-19 precautions will be followed during the event. Vendors will be spaced at least six feet apart, and hand sanitizing stations will be available. Attendees are asked to wear a mask. In the case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, May 16.

Firefighter Steve Dragon, the public information officer for the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, recently published his second children’s book, “Were You Born a Dragon Too?” The book is a follow-up to his first one, “Were You Born a Dragon?” released in December 2019. The books are based on stories that Dragon told his daughter, Rachel, while she was growing up. “Were You Born a Dragon?” tells the story of a boy named Steven and his father, who take Steven’s newborn sister, Rachel, to the Land of Dragons. There, they must receive the blessing of the King of Dragons so that they can raise her to be a dragon. But first, they must get past Arnod, the Chief Security Dragon, who does not like children. Just as Dragon protects his daughter in real life, the character Steven protects his sister. “The theme of the first one was standing up to bullies and brotherly love,” Dragon said. “In the first book, (Steven, Rachel and their father) promised Zargon, the King of Dragons, that they will be back every year on Rachel’s birthday. ‘Were You Born a Dragon Too?’ starts with Steven all excited

because it is (Rachel’s) first birthday and time to go back to the Land of Dragons. When they arrive, Steven is met by two dragons who will be his teachers. He is a little unwilling because he wants to have fun. The theme is the value of a good education and having fun while learning.” Dragon said that plans for the second book were already underway when the first one was published. “I basically had the whole layout of the second book done when the first one came out. It was a matter of getting the artwork done,” he said, noting that the illustrator of both books is Catherine McMahon. Dragon and McMahon will be on hand at the Birdsboro Street Fair on Saturday, May 15, to autograph copies of their books. “We will have a table and copies of both books for sale,” he noted. Dragon, who also teaches at the Montgomery County Fire Academy, read his first book to school students prior to the pandemic. “I went back to my elementary school, Ridge Park in Plymouth Meeting, and read to the second-graders there,” he said. “When we graduated from there, they gave us a lapel pin, ‘RPS 65,’ and I wore that back to the school. It was neat
