Library Provides Sewing Machines, Fabric For Mask Making By Francine Fulton
Although the program Sewing With Miss Nancy is temporarily suspended while the Honey Brook Community Library is closed, the sewing machines used in the program are being put to good use by volunteers making masks for essential community workers in Chester County. The library recently lent sewing machines and donated fabric to the Chester County Masketeers, a newly formed group composed of local residents who use their sewing skills to make reusable cotton masks. To date, the group has delivered more than 1,300 masks to community workers and groups. Information about the group can be found at www.chescomasketeers.com.
“JoAnn Weinberger is a board member for the Chester County Library System. She found out through state Rep. Carolyn Comitta that (the Masketeers) were looking for supplies,” said Jennifer Spade, Honey Brook Library director, explaining how the effort came about. “JoAnn knew that Honey Brook had a sewing program and she emailed me, and I connected her with Nancy Conner, who runs our sewing program.” After Conner prepared the machines for lending, Comitta picked up several of the sewing machines at the library on April 7. The library also donated elastic, cotton material and thread. Later in April, the library donated additional fabric. “(Comitta) reached out to me again and See Masks pg 7

The Chester County commissioners recently announced that the extension of the county government’s essential services-only operation will continue through Friday, May 15, at all county buildings. In addition, the commissioners announced a gradual reopening of all parks owned by Chester County government. The county’s Black Rock Sanctuary and Wolf’s Hollow Park will reopen on Wednesday, May 6, and Hibernia Park, Nottingham Park, Springton Manor Farm and Warwick Park will reopen on Tuesday, May 12. The continuation of essential services-only is designed to protect the health and safety of Chester County’s See County pg 6
Online Music Festival Planned Gardening also teaches a life skill in sustainability, and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture.

Three local music venues, Steel City Coffeehouse and The Soundbank in Phoenixville and Chaplin’s in Spring City, will present ChesCo United, an online music festival, on Friday through Sunday, May 15 through 17. Viewers will be able to listen to and watch local musicians as part of the online event, which will stream for
seven hours a day for three consecutive days on Facebook, highlighting each music venue and the artists who perform there. The stream will start at 3:45 p.m. each day; a link to the event can be found at www.chescounitedmusicfestival.com. Among the local musicians who will participate in the event will be Nashville country music artist Sam Schmidthuber, who hails from Morgantown. “(The festival) will have solo performers, folk, Americana, rock ‘n’ roll, blues and country,” explained event organizer Ed Simpson, who owns Steel City Coffeehouse with his wife, Laura Vernola. “While we will be streaming live on Facebook, most of the performances will prerecorded.” See Music Festival pg 2
Among the performers during ChesCo United, an online music festival set for May 15 to 17, will be local country music singer Sam Schmidthuber.

During an unsettling time of social distancing and cancellations, many local residents have found a therapeutic and productive outlet in gardening, whether it is a newfound interest or a longtime hobby. For families looking for activities that can involve their children, gardening can get the entire family away from screens while providing opportunities to enjoy the spring weather.

Performers from Chaplin’s will be featured on May 15, Steel City will be featured on May 16 and The Soundbank’s performers will be highlighted on May 17. “On Saturday, I am going to be hosting live from Steel City itself,” Simpson explained. “It will be me and an engineer. I will be introducing the clips and reading advertisements for local businesses.” He said the goal of the concert is to entertain local residents while reminding everyone of the impact the stay-at-home order has had on local businesses as they prepare to open again. Any proceeds generated during the event will be divided equally among the three businesses. In addition to Schmidthuber, performers will include Christine Havrilla, Greg Sover, Nicole Zell, Alyssa Garcia, Cody Tyler, Evolv, The Bent Benjamins, Amanda
and the Teddy Thomas Band, Cliff Hillis, Simplefires and others. An updated list of performers can be found at the aforementioned website. “Most of the people on Steel City’s lineup are people whose shows we had canceled,” Simpson noted. “Some of them I called and asked to participate, and they were more than enthusiastic.” He said the artists are currently recording their performances and sending them to organizers via Dropbox or Google Drive. There will also be a “dress rehearsal” prior to the event. “Technology is pretty amazing right now. There is a lot of stuff people can do from home right now that they couldn’t do 10 years ago,” Simpson said, noting that most of the performers, including Schmidthuber, already post musical numbers on their

GOTR Connect is providing safe, virtual spaces for girls to deepen relationships with teammates while dedicated volunteers trained in trauma responses guide the discussion. One other important aspect of the GOTR experience is setting and accomplishing goals, which the girls do by participating in a season-ending GOTR 5K. In the spirit of keeping all families moving forward, GOTR is introducing an opportunity for families to lace up their sneakers for a virtual event. boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.”

“Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window
shared. “Dedicate time daily or weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest.” Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

Gardening from pg 1
For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others and to interact with the community,” explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience,” Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables.” As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants,” Wenger

2,400 full- and part-time employees and the public, according to Chester County commissioners chair Marian Moskowitz. The county buildings currently open for essential services include the 9-1-1 Center; the Pocopson Home, a long-term care facility; the Chester County Prison and Youth Center; and the Coroner’s Office. Following CDC and Pennsylvania guidelines, a no-visitor policy remains at Chester County Prison, Pocopson Home and the Chester County Youth Center. Many Chester County staff members are working from home to continue to provide some services and to answer questions via email. Information for specific departments can be found on their respective home pages at www.chesco.org. More than 60% of all county programs and services are offered remotely during this time, according to Moskowitz. The commissioners’ decision to reopen Chester County’s parks follows the announcement by Gov. Tom Wolf that limited outdoor recreational activities will reopen. While the three countyowned trails - Chester Valley Trail, Struble Trail and Schuylkill River Trail - have remained open during the pandemic, county officials have stressed the importance of maintaining social distancing and wearing masks while on the trails. That message of social distancing and wearing masks applies to anyone visiting any of Chester County’s parks once they reopen. All Chester County park permits, pavilion rentals, volunteer programs and ranger-led programs remain canceled for May and June, and as they reopen, the parks will have limited

asked for more material,” said Spade. “Nancy went into the library to see what else we had in cotton that they could use. A volunteer from the Masketeers came and picked up the material at the library.” When the library is open, Sewing With Miss Nancy is held on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for patrons age 12 and over. Participants take part in a variety of sewing projects. “Most of our sewing machines were donated, and Nancy is good at making them work,” said Spade. “We don’t normally lend them out, but it is pretty cool that we could help out this way.” During the stay-at-home order, Spade encourages patrons to visit the Chester County Library System (CCLS) website for activities. Patrons with library cards can use the CCLS databases, which offer programs like Mango Languages and Bookflix, offering video books for children. People can also read the New York Times and other publications in the database section at www.ccls.org/196/ Databases-by-Name. “We also have an app called Flipster, which allows you to look at magazines and check them out to your e-reader,” Spade pointed out. For more details and to access the programs, readers may visit www.honeybrooklibrary.org and choose the CCLS tab. While the library is closed, Spade works in the building weekly in anticipation of the library’s reopening. “I have been going in once a week to get the mail and get the books out of the book drop,” she noted. “We had just placed a large book order before we closed, and we will start getting that ready. We have piles of books that need to go back on our shelves. We have to catalog, process things and put things away.” She has also been keeping in contact with library staff via email and has taken part in Zoom meetings with the Chester County Library Board of Trustees and other directors and children’s librarians in the CCLS. “We hope to open all libraries at the same time or around the same date,” Spade added, noting that there will probably be social distancing restrictions still in place when the library opens. “We are waiting on guidelines from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.” For pertinent information, readers may search for “Honey Brook Community Library” on Facebook. “We are not offering online programming at Honey Brook at this time as most of our patrons do not have a big online presence. We are very much a face-to-face library,” said Spade. “We have been using our Facebook page to keep in touch with our patrons and give them information and resources.” Readers with questions may contact Spade at jspade@ccls.org.

Penn State Extension will present a town hall-style, web-based seminar on Thursday, May 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to assist Pennsylvania agricultural stakeholders who rely on the H-2A visa program for temporary workers to operate their businesses. The session will cover COVID19 mitigation efforts, such as international travel restrictions and consulate closures, that have disrupted the normal functioning of the H-2A visa program. These disruptions to the H-2A program raise questions about the arrival of guest workers and the impact on essential food and agricultural businesses. The webinar also will address the dangers of COVID-19 itself and will raise similar questions around how to protect the health and well-being of these visa holders. The first half of the program will feature guest speakers who will discuss the implications of the new H-2A temporary rule change, discussing impacts on how the program interfaces with state agencies; what growers are experiencing related to travel logistics and visa processing of their guest workers; steps that employers should take to protect employee health; what health programs are available to farm workers in Pennsylvania; how immigrant farm communities are experiencing the pandemic; and what

Narvon resident Marlene Stoltzfus McLamb began making masks for friends and family toward the end of March. On April 3, long before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that it would be mandatory to wear masks in public places, her husband posted on Facebook about his wife’s talents with a sewing machine. “It exploded from there,” recalled McLamb, who said that within 24 hours of the post, the family had received between 200 and 300 orders. McLamb makes the masks for free or by donation for health care workers or those who work in retirement communities. “For anyone who is on the front lines, I donate (the mask),” said McLamb, who made a mask for family friend Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries. Neff has worn hers when handing out lunches to Pequea Valley School District students during the weekly distributions at The Factory. Masks are available for others at a nominal cost. On April 4, McLamb went to work, completing between 900 and 1,000 masks in the next 10 days. “The first five days or so, I was sewing 12 to 14 hours per day,” said McLamb. “I was doing nothing but sewing (because) everybody wanted (masks) as quickly as possible.” The masks McLamb is creating are made of 100% cotton. Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced the availability of low-interest loans for small businesses and eligible nonprofit organizations in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Pennsylvania businesses and nonprofits are encouraged to look at the SBA resources available to them and take advantage of this opportunity for financial assistance during this time of uncertainty. SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans offer up to $2 million in assistance and can provide vital economic support to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing. These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster’s impact. The interest rate is 3.75% for small businesses without credit available elsewhere. Businesses with credit available elsewhere are not eligible. The interest rate for nonprofits is 2.75%. SBA offers loans with long-term repayments, up to a maximum of 30 years, in order to keep payments affordable. Terms are determined case-by-case and are based upon each borrower’s ability to repay. Businesses may obtain information and loan applications by See Disaster Loans pg 9

Officials with Chester County’s Department of Emergency Services were working alongside the county’s health department to prepare for the impact of the coronavirus long before the first COVID-19 case was recorded in Chester County.
Chester County Commissioners (seated, from left) Michelle Kichline, Josh Maxwell and Marian Moskowitz helped to bottle 825 gallons of hand sanitizer donated to Chester County’s Department of Emergency Services for use by COVID-19 frontline workers. They were joined by Mike Lam from the county Department of Emergency Services.
