ike the e-commerce store Esty, Embrace Marketplace will also feature apparel, crafts, unique gifts and handmade items that people offer for sale. The difference? The newly founded Embrace Marketplace is exclusively open to vendors with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The creator of Embrace Marketplace is Berks County resident Ashlee Crater, 34, who has Down syndrome. She launched the website with the help of her family members, including her mother, Joan Crater, and sister, Kelsey Hartell. Currently, the website offers shirts, hoodies, water bottles, throw pillow covers and drawstring bags that include the phrase, “Accept. Include. Embrace.”

envisions a world where everyone can participate in the workplace and contribute to society.” A portion of every item purchased at Embrace Marketplace is donated to Dayspring Homes Inc., a faith-based nonprofit organization near Shillington that assists people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “They have day programs and group homes. (Ashlee) has been a part of the day program since she was 21 years old,” said Joan, noting that participants in the program take part in arts and crafts, gardening, reading and health and fitness activities. “Last year, they were working with her to learn CPR. They also do volunteer work in the community.” “We worked at the food bank and cleaned a church,” Ashlee noted.

The Birdsboro Street Fair, featuring free entertainment, music, children’s activities, food, a craft sale and displays by community organizations, will be held on Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

“We started to work on (the idea) in early December,” said Ashlee. “Our first order was in the middle of February.” Joan explained that Kelsey came up with the idea to form the marketplace because Ashlee’s activities, which included working as a hostess and at the Reading Fightin Phils, were canceled because of the pandemic. “(Kelsey) was very concerned because Ashley had nothing to do because she likes to be active,” she said. “(The pandemic) affected many people, but because she has a disability it is much harder to find work.” Joan said that the goal of the website is to promote inclusion and to provide a creative way to find employment for people with disabilities. Ashlee Crater is the founder of Embrace Marketplace, where crafters with disabilities may offer homemade items for sale.

Chase Shaneman, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS) and a member of the track and field team, recently threw a discus 148 feet, which was enough to beat a 50-year school record set back in 1971 by Gary Kochel of 147 feet, 9 inches. Chase broke the record in the discus throw event that took place during a home meet against Fleetwood High School on April 27. “I made the throw and they measured it. When

it was announced it was 148 feet, my whole team went crazy and my parents went crazy,” he said. “I thought my throw would be terrible because I did not practice the day before because of work and my two warm-up throws were bad, but everything came together.” According to Chase, his longest throw in 2018 was 110 feet, 9 inches, and his longest throw in 2019 was 130 feet. He knew from the start that he wanted to break the record. “When you walk into the hallway

The Chester County Studio Tour, which highlights the work of local artists, will take place on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As part of the tour, which is free and open to the public, the community is invited to view the artwork of 148 artists, which will be on display in 59 studios around Chester County. Nancy Fuhrman of Coatesville, one of the artists on the tour, explained that members of the public can visit the event website and map out their stops at the various artists’ studios at their own pace. “There are potters, printmakers, watercolorists, woodworkers and people who work in glass (featured on the tour),” said Fuhrman. “It’s a chance for us to show our stuff and (for visitors) to know who we are.” Artisans are required to be in their studios during the tour to answer questions from the public, and many

of the participants will do live demonstrations. Artwork will also be available for sale. Fuhrman said that the tour is always held in May, but because of the pandemic, last year’s event was moved to September with safety precautions in place. This year’s tour will also feature special COVID protocols. “We all wear masks and have hand sanitizer. The hosts or hostesses make sure there are not a lot of people in (a studio) at one time,” Fuhrman said. “We are following all the COVID precautions.” Those who visit Fuhrman’s studio in her home will be able to view paintings of historical buildings from Downingtown, Coatesville and West Chester, including the Coatesville Cultural Society. Fuhrman is both a printmaker who creates etchings and a painter, and she will have both mediums on display during the tour. People who plan to take part in the tour may visit www.countystudio tour.com/county-routes, where they

will be able to map out their day in advance. Those who visit the artist or studio pages can plan their itinerary by selecting artists and studios they want to see, and the most efficient route will be offered. In addition, those who visit the site and click on “Find 5 Studios” can have the five closest studios selected just for them. There are two maps available for downloading, one that covers northern Chester County and another that highlights the studios in southern Chester County. Studios on the northern Chester County map are located in Spring City, Pottstown, Phoenixville, Chester Springs, Exton and Coatesville. For more details about the tour, to read biographies of the artists and to view photos of their work, visit www.countystudiotour.com. More information about the tour is also available by emailing info@county studiotour.com or searching for “County Studio Tour” on Facebook.

The day will culminate with a Duck Derby at 4 p.m., when people will line the banks of the Hay Creek to watch hundreds of rubber ducks “race” toward the finish line. “Each duck ticket that is sold has a number that corresponds to a duck that will be placed in the race,” explained Lisa Kraljevich, fundraising chair for Boone Area Library, which is presenting the event. “Ducks are dumped by Birdsboro municipal workers into Hay Creek under the bridge at First and Water streets. As the ducks float towards the finish line, (the workers) follow behind the ducks in their hip waders to free any who get stuck along the way.” The first 11 ducks to cross the finish

line and the very last duck to cross the finish line will be the winners. Prize recipients do not need to be present to win. Cash prizes will be awarded to the “sponsors” of the 12 ducks. Local businesses, including Pioneer Crossing Landfill; Bachman’s Roofing, Building and Remodeling Inc.; RAM Siding Company Inc.; Mountz Disposal Service; Uncle Jack’s Corner; and SuzieQ’s Breakfast and Lunch Café, have donated the prize money for the winners. Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, during its hours of operation: Mondays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays, 2 to 7 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Duck Derby tickets can also be purchased at Happy Hands Consignment Shop, 347 W. Main St., Birdsboro. Tickets will also be available in the park the day of the event. Kraljevich noted that because of the pandemic, last year’s Street Fair was canceled, but the duck race was held virtually at a privately owned pool. “The first 12 ducks to enter the skimmer basket were the winners,” she said. “The video was available to view on Facebook and on the library’s website.” The following groups will provide entertainment: Old Fangled, an acoustic rock guitar duo, 11 a.m. to noon; Dance One Studio, noon to 1 p.m.; 1st Street Players theater group, 1 to 2 p.m.; Tri Valley Cheer, 2 to 3 p.m.; and banjo music with pastor Steve Simpson from St Paul’s United Church of Christ in Douglassville, 3 to 4 p.m. There will also be a disc jockey providing live music throughout the day. Miss Sarah, the children’s coordinator from the Boone Area Library, will present story time with a craft at 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. To coincide with the Street Fair, a coloring contest is being held for children age 12 and under. Any child who completes a coloring page and returns it before May 15 will have his or her name entered into a prize drawing for a gift basket. One winner will be randomly chosen on the day of the Street Fair. Coloring sheets can be picked up during library hours or downloaded from the “Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby” Facebook page. COVID-19 precautions will be followed during the event. Vendors will be spaced at least six feet apart, and hand sanitizing stations will be available. Attendees are asked to wear a mask. In the case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, May 16.

Honey Brook Fresh Air will present the Honey Brook Township board of supervisors meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. Meetings will begin at 7 p.m. To view the meetings, search for HoneyBrookFreshAir at www .youtube.com.

Little Free Library Installed At West Nantmeal Park

Discus Record from pg 1 to get into the gym there are all the records for track. I saw that every day and became aware of it,” he said. “I knew that I wanted to break the record since sophomore year. The goal was to break it junior year, (but the 2020 season) was canceled because of COVID. So, it really became a priority this season.” The result of Chase’s discus throw is listed at http://pa.mile split.com. Chase and other athletes who broke records this year will be recognized at the end-ofyear awards ceremony at TVHS. Discus throwing dates back to the ancient Greek Olympic games. A discus weighs 1.6 kilograms, which is approximately 3 pounds. “It’s like a metal frisbee,” Chase said, noting that he wears special shoes while throwing. “The shoes are called spinners. There is no traction on the bottom because it helps get a rotation. (You always throw) from a circle (on the ground) and it’s always concrete unless it’s inside; then (the circle) is wood. We do practice indoors, but we use a special discus, and we are normally in the gym.” Chase noted that he has received guidance, coaching help and support from various people, including Barry Lepori Jr. on technique and Don Simcox for strength training, as well as TVHS track and field head coach Brian Holden and throwing coach Sue Faller. He also receives video analysis from Throws University, which offers online throwing training.

place to get books during the pandemic when many libraries were closed or had limited services. “When COVID hit, many Little Free Libraries were turned into the free food pantries because of so many people losing their jobs and being food insecure,” Lana said. This spring, the couple plans to add a sign on the side of the box so that it is visible from the road and possibly add flowers around the base of the post. According to www.littlefree library.org, the goal of the organization is to promote literacy and reading by facilitating the building of free book exchange boxes worldwide. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to learn more about the organizations and to locate other LFLs in the area. The West Nantmeal Township Recreation Area is located next to the

A new Little Free Library (LFL) has been installed at the West Nantmeal Township Recreation Area, where community members are invited to take a book or bring a book to share. The library’s stewards are Evan and Lana Pellegrino, who are both avid readers and wanted to share their love of books with others. “We moved to Elverson a year ago, and we started to come to the park and thought it would be really good idea to have a Little Free Library for (park visitors) because there are many great things here at the park,” said Lana. “We want to encourage people to read,” Lana said, adding, “(Our son, Declan,) is just learning to read at the age of 6.” The couple bought a kit for the book exchange box from the LFL organization, and it was installed by township workers near the park’s tennis courts in a spot that is under 24-hour video surveillance. The LFL

contains a plaque that features a quote by Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life.” “We went to the township in the fall of 2020, and it was approved earlier this year,” said Evan. “I bought the post and the kit and dropped them off and (the township) took care of everything.” After the LFL was put into place, Lana announced the installation on various Facebook pages. She and Evan stocked the LFL initially, but they hope that community members and neighbors will keep the library filled. She noted that one of the family’s favorite LFLs is located at Crow’s Nest Preserve in Elverson. “It’s really cool. When you are hiking through a field and through the woods, you come to this big clearing. Someone cleared space, added Adirondack chairs and put in a Little Free Library,” Lana said. “You have to do the hike to find it. “ Lana noted that LFLs were the go-to
