Despite her fear of heights, Natanya Sortland will once again represent Chester County in Eye Drop 2022, a fundraising event held annually by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday
Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground. Sortland said performing the feat is part of her personal effort to raise funds for VisionCorps and to make people in the county aware of how she personally benefited from the services that the organization provides, including training individuals on how to use a cane to navigate obstacles both at home and in the community. The Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team will present a bike rodeo on May 21.
TVMBT To Host Twin Valley Bike Rodeo Twin Valley Bike Rodeo, featuring activities for youths ages 4 to 12, will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at St. James Lutheran Church in Geigertown. The event, being presented by the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team (TVMBT), will include bike skill stations, a bike and helmet safety check and free giveaways. The event, designed to promote the sport of bike riding, is free to attend; however, donations are being accepted to fund scholarships for team riders in need. Participants are asked to bring their own bikes and helmets. “(The bike rodeo) is for kids who want to get a flavor of mountain biking or biking in general,” said John Spahr, one of the team’s coaches. “We want to get more kids on bikes.” Activities will take place in the church parking lot and grove. “(Youths will) have a series of eight to 10 stations with different obstacles or features to practice their onthe-bike skills,” Spahr explained.

During competitions, youths ride off-road and on local trails. “We start practice on July 1, and the season goes until Oct. 31,” Spahr said. “We are expecting 50 riders this year and about 25 coaches.” While most team members own their own mountain bikes, the team has several bikes that students may borrow to see if they like the sport. “We provide the kids with a team jersey,” said Spahr, noting that the only expenses are the race fees and PICL membership. Information about joining the TVMBT will be available during the bike rodeo. “One of the mantras we use is ‘Challenge by choice.’ If you want to be competitive, we are here to support you. If you want to focus on enjoyment, we have a spot for you as well,” stated Spahr. “Abilities are not all the same. Goals are not all the same. Obstacles will include “The Lava Bridge,” “Circle of Doom,” “Mountain Top,” “Mine Field” and “Newpaper Toss.” “People used to deliver newspapers off their bikes and throw them onto the front porches. We will test their accuracy with that,” Spahr noted. Bike and helmet safety checks will also be offered. “We will do a visual inspection of the helmet and show them how to put it on and wear the helmet. It sounds easy, but it’s easy to get wrong,” noted Spahr. “We will give them some guidance (by checking) the ABCs - air in the tires, brakes and the chain.” Volunteers from the TVMBT will be on hand to help run the event and guide attendees along the course. “We are trying to teach our studentathletes the importance of giving back to the community, whether it is in knowledge or skills,” Spahr stated. “The (goal) for them is to take leadership roles and demonstrate the fun and benefit of riding bikes. Ultimately, we want to get interested riders to join the team in the future as well.” The TVMBT, which formed in 2016, is part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League

The event will take place on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids Safety Day, which is free and open to the community, will also feature an open house. “We will have our bays open, so people are more than welcome to look throughout the ambulance station,” said Darrell Fisher, EMS chief. One of the highlights of the day will be a bike rodeo; youths are asked to bring their own bikes and helmets. “They will ride through a safety course, and we will introduce them to safety signs like a stop sign or red light and a railroad crossing,” Fisher explained. Representatives from the Lancaster County 911 Dispatching Center will be available to talk about what important information should be provided to 911 dispatchers in the event of an emergency. Also on hand during the day will be horses from the Lancaster City Bureau of Police’s Mounted Patrol from Lancaster city and members of Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue. “The search and rescue dogs will do demonstrations throughout the day,” said Fisher. “People will be able to meet the dogs and talk to the trainers and interact with them and learn about how much training (the dogs) do.” In the parking lot, visitors will be able to see numerous rescue and police vehicles. “Garden Spot Fire

Ambulance holds various events to promote safety. “We had some other events like National Night Out and some Farm Safety Days,” he noted. “We see the importance of promoting safety to the children.” Those who complete the bicycle safety course will be given a ticket for a chance to win a bike. “We will give out at least two bikes that have been donated,” Fisher said. “We will draw the names at the end of the day.” New Holland Ambulance Association is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization. “I went through the whole experience (of rappelling) and when I got down, I realized it wasn’t as bad as the year I spent desperately trying to find help and not being able to read a book or a recipe and feeling my way through my house and almost getting hit by a car,” said Sortland. “What VisionCorps offers is training and a way of living an independent life with courage and with pride.” Sortland’s vision was damaged after she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Although her limited vision is blurry, she was aware of the building’s height during last year’s Eye Drop. “It felt like it took forever (to reach the ground), but the clock said six and a half minutes,” she noted. Like the other participants, Sortland was secured with a harness and ropes that operated on a pulley system. “They cinch you up and put all the gear on. Right before, there is a room you are in and that’s where you get to practice individually on how to do it,” she recalled. “I was the first to go. I looked over the edge and looked down and I never felt such terror in my life. Everyone looked like dots. I just pretended I was OK. I faced the crowd and did a fist pump, but no one knew how scared I was.” While rappelling, Sortland dressed like Lady Liberty to represent her newly independent life. She plans to dress in costume again this year. “(People in) Chester County need to know about VisionCorps,” she stated. “I will do this every year
until I am the oldest person doing it. Even if it’s not, I will tell myself it will be easier (this time).” Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. This year’s goal is to raise $175,000. This is the third year for Eye Drop, and this year, a new attraction will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions.
