Morgantown Resident Wins WCU Student Leader Award BY FRANCINE FULTON
A yearbook is a treasured keepsake that documents students’ academic accomplishments, their life on campus and special activities. So how does a yearbook get completed during a pandemic, when all classes are virtual and many programs have been postponed or canceled? “It really was a terrific feat to get that yearbook out last year,” stated Lionel McCulloch of Morgantown, a
sophomore at West Chester University (WCU), who recently was honored during a virtual ceremony with the Madeleine Wing Adler Emerging Leader Award. “I knew nobody would blame me if I just quit, but I also knew that I could do it if I just kept working on it.” The award, named after a former WCU president, is given to a first- or second-year student, who has fewer than 60 credits and who takes part in a leadership role or is an active participant in student organizations, academics or service. When WCU closed to in-person learning in March 2020, McCulloch was a freshman who was working on the sports section of The Serpentine Yearbook. Due to WCU’s switch to remote learning, most of the staff of the 2020 yearbook was unable to continue working on the publication. McCulloch stepped up and offered to finish the book and was named editor-in-chief. He was named yearbook editor again for the 2020-21 school year. See Student Leader Award pg 3

OJR Graduate To Compete For Miss Pennsylvania Title BY FRANCINE FULTON
enna Martorana, a 2013 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School (OJR), recently won the title of Miss Red Rose City 2021, which qualified her to compete for Miss Pennsylvania. Martorana will represent the city of Lancaster during the state pageant, to be held in York in June.
J
Because she was a college student in Lancaster County, Martorana first competed for the title of Miss Red Rose City in 2018 when she was a senior at Millersville University. She graduated from Millersville University in 2018 with a degree in applied disability studies. She is currently a graduate student at Kutztown University, where she is studying for her master’s degree in school counseling.
United Veterans Council Slates Memorial Day Pilgrimage BY ANN MEAD ASH
For the talent portion of the upcoming pageant, she will perform a dance routine from color guard, complete with flags, that she perfected while a student at OJR. “I started baton twirling when I was 4. In the ninth grade they no longer had twirlers in the band, so I switched to color guard,” she said. “I am the only person doing color guard (as my talent).”
The cancellation of last year’s Memorial Day Pilgrimage, a local tradition, was heartbreaking for organizers Alan Noll and Mike Martin. So heartbreaking in fact, that a small delegation representing the United Veterans Council of New Holland went forth to the locations reading a prayer and observing a moment of silence. “This started in 1922,” said Noll.

For the recent pageant, Martorana had to find a venue for the livestreamed program. She noted that four of the other competitors were singers, so they were able to perform at home. “May 1 was the competition, and on April 23 I found out that the competition would not be in person; it would be virtual,” she explained. “I had to find a
venue. I needed to have a lot of space for my talent. Schools would not let anybody in. (But) I was able to use my old church - Christ Church of the Valley - in Royersford.” Because she has struggled with depression and anxiety, Martorana’s platform, which is now called a social impact initiative, is to bring awareness to mental health issues.

The motto is “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.” “I started partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) when I was Miss Red Rose City in 2018,” she said. “From that point on, I partnered with six local chapters of NAMI and NAMI Keystone, the state chapter, and I am president of the NAMI Club at Kutztown University. I am also a presenter of the NAMI ‘Ending the Silence’ program.” “What I do the most with my title is share my story,” she added. At the upcoming pageant, which will be held at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York from Thursday, June 17, through Saturday, June 19, the contestants will take part in a private interview, share their talent, model red-carpet wear and take part in an onstage interview, during which time they will talk about their social impact initiative. If Martorana wins at the state level, she will advance to the Miss America pageant, to be held in Connecticut in December.

Student Leader Award from pg 1 “I called on everyone I knew to help me with things,” he said, explaining how the book came together. “I asked the public relations and athletics offices for photos. I individually emailed all of the graduating seniors. I went to the graduating class Facebook pages and watched for photos and asked people to submit them.” For this year’s publication, titled “West Chester University Serpentine - Beyond the Walls,” McCulloch was able to assemble a small staff to work on the book. “This year I had a team of really enthusiastic students who are also all working from home,” he noted. “One of them, my friend Rachel Wilkin, took a lot of pictures on campus because WCU did have a lot of students who were on campus to do hybrid work.” “Sports were not canceled until March (2020), so we had a lot of athletics in the (2020) book,” he continued. “This year ... we had so many arts
activities on campus. The theater department worked to put out digital content, and artists did displays in the art rooms. I think one of the most interesting things that was done (in 2021) was a drive-in opera.” McCulloch has a double major in theater and media and culture and is minoring in computer science. In addition working to on the yearbook, he was the lead editor of the school’s first remote theater production, “Unmute Yourself,” which was broadcast via Zoom. “I have so many majors/minors because I want to do everything after college,” he added. “I’ve always loved to do film, stage, writing, reporting, putting together yearbooks, and now my day job is doing computer installation and repair for a small business. I have no idea what I want to do with my life; there are so many things that I enjoy. Right now I’m just doing whatever needs to be done.”

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.

As part of its effort to ensure every eligible Chester County resident who chooses to have a COVID-19 vaccine is able to receive one, the Chester County Health Department has partnered with local emergency medical services (EMS) agencies to schedule at-home vaccine appointments for those who are unable to attend a vaccine clinic. Through the partnership, advanced emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are deployed to administer either the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine to individuals in their home setting. Caregivers for the individuals are also offered the vaccine, if needed. Health officials identified individuals throughout Chester County who would benefit from receiving the COVID-19 vaccination at home through lists provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the Chester County Department of Aging Services, and self-identification of the need. All individuals were contacted to confirm their need, and appointments were scheduled to administer the vaccine. The county’s at-home vaccine program began in late March, and as of May 10, 232 first-dose vaccines had been completed in Chester County, covering all individuals identified as needing a vaccine in the home setting. On average, each EMS agency team covered 10 at-home appointments a day, given the travel time and the time needed to remain with the individual after administering the vaccine. The partnership with the local EMS agencies spanned all areas of Chester County, and the at-home vaccinations will continue as long as needed. Additional Chester County EMS agencies that were providing at-home vaccinations as of May 10 include Berwyn Fire Company EMS and Event Medical Staffing Solutions (EMSS). Agencies that planned to participate at a later date are Longwood Fire Company EMS, West End EMS of Phoenixville and TowerDIRECT. Any Chester County resident in need of an at-home vaccine appointment should call the Chester County Health Department at 610344-6225.

TVHS Senior Breaks Discus Throwing Record BY FRANCINE FULTON
Chase Shaneman, a senior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS) and a member of the track and field team, recently threw a discus 148 feet, which was enough to beat a 50-year school record set back in 1971 by Gary Kochel of 147 feet, 9 inches. Chase broke the record in the discus throw event that took place during a home meet against Fleetwood High School on April 27. “I made the throw and they measured it. When it was announced it was 148 feet, my whole team went crazy and my parents went crazy,” he said. “I thought my throw would be terrible because I did not prac-

tice the day before because of work and my two warm-up throws were bad, but everything came together.” According to Chase, his longest throw in 2018 was 110 feet, 9 inches, and his longest throw in 2019 was 130 feet. He knew from the start that he wanted to break the record. “When you walk into the hallway to get into the gym there are all the records for track. I saw that every day and became aware of it,” he said. “I knew that I wanted to break the record since sophomore year. The goal was to break it junior year, (but the 2020 season) was canceled because of COVID. So, it really became a priority this season.”
Senior Chase Shaneman recently broke the discus throw record at Twin Valley High School.

Twin Valley High School senior Chase Shaneman, shown with his parents, Frank and Jill, will attend Ursinus College this fall.
The result of Chase’s discus throw is listed at http://pa.milesplit.com. Chase and other athletes who broke records this year will be recognized at the end-of-year awards ceremony at TVHS. Discus throwing dates back to the ancient Greek Olympic games. A discus weighs 1.6 kilograms, which is approximately 3 pounds. “It’s like a metal frisbee,” Chase said, noting that he wears special shoes while throwing. “The shoes are called spinners. There is no traction on the bottom because it helps get a rotation. (You always throw) from a circle (on the ground) and it’s always concrete unless it’s inside; then (the circle) is wood. We do practice indoors, but we use a special discus, and we are normally in the gym.” Chase noted that he has received guidance, coaching help and support from various people, including Barry Lepori Jr. on technique and Don Simcox for strength training, as well as TVHS track and field head coach Brian Holden and throwing coach Sue Faller. He also receives video analysis from Throws University, which offers online throwing training. Chase reported that he qualified for Districts, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22, at Shippensburg University, with a hope to make this year’s state competition, which will be held the following weekend at the same location. He will attend Ursinus College this fall to possibly study health and exercise physiology. He is currently considering a career as a physical therapist.

HIGH 5 Soccer, a free program for youths with special needs offered by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA), recently hosted “HIGH 5K for Connor,” featuring a 5K, a 1-mile youth run and a children’s fun run, on April 18 at Fellowship Field in Chester Springs. The event was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but was canceled because of the pandemic. The fundraiser was for Connor Dobbyn, 12, a student at West Vincent Elementary School, who has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome Type C, also known as childhood Alzheimer’s. Sanfilippo syndrome Type C is a rare, progressive and genetic disorder that primarily affects the brain cells and spinal cord. Currently, there is no cure. Money raised at the event will go toward a clinical trial for Sanfilippo syndrome. “We raised over $31,000 for the Sanfilippo Foundation through race registrations and donations,” reported Jenn Wagner, who is the coach of HIGH 5 Soccer along with her husband, Matt Wagner. “ We collected over $1,000 in donations on race day.” She said that more than 220 people took part in the event and 40 volunteers were on hand to provide assistance. Plan meant over 2,100 trees, shrubs, and perennials were planted around the campus. Trees accounted for 154 of the inventory planted; additionally, 75 trees were pruned and fertilized and 45 more were removed. A team of 10 dedicated grounds crew members tends the 140-acre property throughout the year by pruning, planting, mowing, and raking the greenspaces. Composting the grass and leaves while they work to beautify the campus is a standard practice. While COVID-19 restrictions limited community projects, a few staff members teamed up to protect the facility’s tree inventory from the invasive spotted lanternfly by banding at-risk trees with sticky material. Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation program as a 2020 Tree Campus Healthcare facility. Coatesville VAMC said that taking care of green spaces is a priority for the campus because not only do trees contribute to the environment, but they can also promote physical activity and create calming spaces that are essential to stress recovery. Both outcomes are important to the health and rehabilitation efforts for veterans in longterm care, the VAMC said. The announcement means Coatesville VAMC was recognized for the second year in a row for making a missionaligned impact on community wellness through tree education, investment, and community engagement.
