Providing Wheelchairs To Those In Need BY FRANCINE FULTON
s a soldier in the United States Army, Honey Brook resident Marlin King served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. However, that was not his only trip to the country in southeast Asia. In fact, King has traveled back to Vietnam 11 times, where he has given out nearly 1,000 wheelchairs to the disabled, including threewheeled chairs that are suitable for use on the road. King, who uses a wheelchair himself, is well known in the community for founding King Tables in 1974. The company manufactures picnic tables and outdoor lawn furniture. His charitable effort started when King invested in another out-ofstate outdoor furniture company that failed. “ When I thought about the money that I lost there, it bugged me, but one day I said, ‘Lord, if I ever get that money back, I will use every dollar to help handicapped
A
people,’” King recalled. “One day I got a check in the mail for the whole (amount I invested). I did not even know it was coming. I decided that I was going (back) to Vietnam since that what was on my mind.” His first visit to Vietnam after that was in April of 2008. With the help of his late friend Paul Pinkerton, King found a wheelchair builder in Vietnam. “(Paul) was big on helping kids, and he had his own organization called Paul’s Kids. He was my contact,” King explained. “We found a wheelchair manufacturer, and he designed the three-wheeled chair.” While in Vietnam, King would rent a 26-passenger bus, find a driver who spoke the language and fill the bus with wheelchairs for distribution. Some wheelchairs, including those that were modified for use by children, were give out to people who requested them on a website designed by a friend that King met while staying at a hotel in Vietnam. Other wheelchairs were given out randomly. See Wheelchairs pg 5

A yearbook is a treasured keepsake that documents students’ academic accomplishments, their life on campus and special activities. So how does a yearbook get completed during a pandemic, when all classes are virtual and many programs have been postponed or canceled? “It really was a terrific feat to get that yearbook out last year,” stated Lionel McCulloch of Morgantown, a sophomore

a lot of athletics in the (2020) book,” he continued. “This year ... we had so many arts activities on campus. The theater department worked to put out digital content, and artists did displays in the art rooms. I think one of the most interesting things that was done (in 2021) was a drive-in opera.” McCulloch has a double major in theater and media and culture and is minoring in computer science. In addition working to on the yearbook, he was the lead editor of the school’s first remote theater production, “Unmute Yourself,” which was broadcast via Zoom. “I have so many majors/minors because I want to do everything after college,” he added. “I’ve always loved to do film, stage, writing, reporting, putting together yearbooks, and now my day job is doing computer installation and repair for a small business. I have no idea what I want to do with my life; there are so many things that I enjoy. Right now I’m just doing whatever needs to be done.”

the publication. McCulloch stepped up and offered to finish the book and was named editor-in-chief. He was named yearbook editor again for the 2020-21 school year. “I called on everyone I knew to help me with things,” he said, explaining how the book came together. “I asked the public relations and athletics offices for photos. I individually emailed all of the graduating seniors. I went to the graduating class Facebook pages and watched for photos and asked people to submit them.” For this year’s publication, titled “West Chester University Serpentine Beyond the Walls,” McCulloch was able to assemble a small staff to work on the book. “This year I had a team of really enthusiastic students who are also all working from home,” he noted. “One of them, my friend Rachel Wilkin, took a lot of pictures on campus because WCU did have a lot of students who were on campus to do hybrid work.” “Sports were not canceled until March (2020), so we had

This year, 232 teams from 199 high schools competed in district and regional levels of Pennsylvania’s mock trial competition in hopes of gaining one of the 16 spots at the statewide competition that was held virtually for the first time. Pennsylvania’s competition is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. NAMI Club at Kutztown University. I am also a presenter of the NAMI ‘Ending the Silence’ program.” “What I do the most with my title is share my story,” she added. At the upcoming pageant, which will be held at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York from Thursday, June 17, through Saturday, June 19, the contestants will take part in a private interview, share their talent, model red-carpet wear and take part in an onstage interview, during which time they will talk about their social impact initiative. If Martorana wins at the state level, she will advance to the Miss America pageant, to be held in Connecticut in December.

Jenna Martorana, a 2013 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School (OJR), recently won the title of Miss Red Rose City 2021, which qualified her to compete for Miss Pennsylvania. Martorana will represent the city of Lancaster during the state pageant, to be held in York in June. Because she was a college student in Lancaster County, Martorana first competed for the title of Miss Red Rose City in 2018 when she was a senior at Millersville University. She graduated from Millersville University in 2018 with a degree in applied disability studies. She is currently a graduate student at Kutztown University, where she is studying for her master’s degree in school counseling. For the talent portion of the upcoming pageant, she will perform a dance routine from color guard, complete with flags, that she perfected while a student at OJR. “I started baton twirling when I was 4. In the ninth grade they no longer had twirlers in the band, so I switched to color guard,” she said. “I am the only person doing color guard
(as my talent).” For the recent pageant, Martorana had to find a venue for the livestreamed program. She noted that four of the other competitors were singers, so they were able to perform at home. “May 1 was the competition, and on April 23 I found out that the competition would not be in person; it would be virtual,” she explained. “I had to find a venue. I needed to have a lot of space for my talent. Schools would not let anybody in. (But) I was able to use my old church - Christ Church of the Valley - in Royersford.” Because she has struggled with depression and anxiety, Martorana’s platform, which is now called a social impact initiative, is to bring awareness to mental health issues. The motto is “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.” “I started partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) when I was Miss Red Rose City in 2018,” she said. “From that point on, I partnered with six local chapters of NAMI and NAMI Keystone, the state chapter, and I am president of the

Through the partnership, advanced emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are deployed to administer either the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine to individuals in their home setting. Caregivers for the individuals are also offered the vaccine, if needed. Health officials identified individuals throughout Chester County who would benefit from receiving the COVID-19 vaccination at home through lists provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the Chester County Department of Aging Services, and self-identification of the need. All individuals were contacted to confirm their need, and appointments were scheduled to administer the vaccine. The county’s at-home vaccine program began in late March, and as of May 10, 232 first-dose vaccines had been completed in Chester County, covering all individuals identified as needing a vaccine in the home setting. On average, each EMS agency team covered 10 at-home appointments a day, given the travel time and the time needed to remain with the individual after administering the vaccine. The partnership with the local EMS agencies spanned all areas of Chester County, and the athome vaccinations will continue as long as needed. See At-Home pg 6

proud and excited to be moving forward and be given the opportunity to celebrate year 51 as a school community.” Meg Wrubel, OJR High School community connections teacher, reported that 74 life skills and autistic support teachers from the participating schools, as well as paraprofessionals, administrators and other professionals, volunteered throughout the morning either by running a station or by assisting the students. “We worked with Cristin Burke, Geoff Bal and Joe Milnes, OJR School District supervisors of special education, to coordinate this fantastic day for the students,” Wrubel said. “Marisa Stoltzfus, department chair of the OJR High School phys ed department, was also an integral person who created the fun fitness events for the students.” During the opening ceremonies, Wiese recited the oath of Special Olympians, which is, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” “We encourage all of our students to find an activity that brings them joy and allows them to share their special gifts with the world,” she said. “This (oath) applies not only to athletics, but every aspect of life, and we should all be following this creed.” Quoting a well-known saying, she added, “Try your best, shoot for the moon, for even if you fail, you will land among the stars.”
Wheelchairs from pg 1 “ We had the best time traveling and giving out chairs,” King said, noting that his last visit was in 2019. “I knew that if I would not have met the people, it would not nearly have the same impact on me.” He recalled his favorite encounter, which involved meeting a young man in his 20s who was paralyzed from the waist down after an accident. The man was traveling along the side of the road in the gravel on a makeshift “scooter” made of planks and caster wheels. “He was laying on his belly and he was pushing himself along,” King said. “ We stopped the bus and asked him if he had a wheelchair at
home and he said, ‘No, but I would love to have one of those three-wheeled ones.’ He had no idea that we had them on the bus. We got him the chair and I said to him, ‘You now own one.’ I cannot describe his happiness.” King added that he also carried toys on the bus, which he was able to give to the young man for his children at home. King is very modest about his charitable work, but he hopes his story will encourage others to do the same. “The only thing I am interested in is to inspire someone else to do something to help people,” he stated. “It’s a good thing, and it’s very rewarding.”

The books are based on stories that Dragon told his daughter, Rachel, while she was growing up. “Were You Born a Dragon?” tells the story of a boy named Steven and his father, who take Steven’s newborn sister, Rachel, to the Land of Dragons. There, they must receive the blessing of the King of Dragons so that they can raise her to be a dragon. But first, they must get past Arnod, the Chief Security Dragon, who does not like children. Just as Dragon protects his daughter in real life, the character Steven protects his sister. “The theme of the first one was standing up to bullies and brotherly love,” Dragon said. “In the first book, (Steven, Rachel and their father) promised Zargon, the King of Dragons, that they will be back every year on Rachel’s birthday. ‘Were You Born a Dragon Too?’ starts with Steven all excited because it is (Rachel’s) first birthday and time to go back to the Land of Dragons. When they arrive, Steven is met by two dragons who will be his teachers. He is a little unwilling because he wants to have fun. The theme is the value of a good education and having fun while learning.” Dragon said that plans for the second book were already underway when the first one was published. “I basically had the whole layout of the second book done when the first one came out. It was a matter of getting the artwork done,” he said, noting that the illustrator of both books is Catherine McMahon. Dragon, who also teaches at the Montgomery County Fire Academy, read his first book to school students prior to the pandemic. “I went back to my elementary school, Ridge Park in Plymouth Meeting, and read to the second-graders there,” he said. “When we graduated from there, they gave us a lapel pin, ‘RPS 65,’ and I wore that back to the school. It was neat to walk the halls again. It was a special day.” For more information about both books in the series, search for “ Were You Born a Dragon?” on Facebook.

During the morning, students rotated through a series of stations designed to challenge their running, jumping and throwing skills. Among the stations were a 50-yard dash, a flying disc toss, jump rope, a standing long jump, a bean bag toss and a glow stick bottle toss. There was also a station where students were asked to kick a soccer ball for distance. Adapted activities were offered for students in wheelchairs. For example, at the soccer ball station, competitors were invited to toss the ball into the soccer net from a distance. At the jump rope station, small cones were used so students could maneuver around them in their wheelchairs. There was also a wheelchair race. There were 65 participants from kindergarten through grade 12, who were all wearing their distinctive red OJR Special Olympics T-shirts. Parents and family members were invited to come out to cheer for the children and enjoy the festivities while watching from the grandstands. Typically, Chester County Special Olympics is held in May at Coatesville Area Senior High School and is open to all districts in the county. However, the event was canceled in 2020 and 2021. “A year ago, we would have been celebrating a milestone, the 50th year of the Special Olympics in Pennsylvania,” said Candis Wiese, OJR High School life skills teacher, who greeted the attendees. “ We are

accounted for 154 of the inventory planted; additionally, 75 trees were pruned and fertilized and 45 more were removed. A team of 10 dedicated grounds crew members tends the 140-acre property throughout the year by pruning, planting, mowing, and raking the greenspaces. Composting the grass and leaves while they work to beautify the campus is a standard practice. While COVID-19 restrictions limited community projects, a few staff members teamed up to protect the facility’s tree inventory from the invasive spotted lanternfly by banding at-risk trees with sticky material. Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation program as a 2020 Tree Campus Healthcare facility. Coatesville VAMC said that taking care of green spaces is a priority for the campus because not only do trees contribute to the environment, but they can also promote physical activity and create calming spaces that are essential to stress recovery. Both outcomes are important to the health and rehabilitation efforts for veterans in long-term care, the VAMC said. The announcement means Coatesville VAMC was recognized for the second year in a row for making a mission-aligned impact on community wellness through tree education, investment, and community engagement. Dedicating resources to fulfill the facility’s Tree Care Plan meant over 2,100 trees, shrubs, and perennials were planted around the campus. Trees

CCWS Holds Virtual Banquet committed to support the life of the families we serve throughout their entire journey in parenthood.” The presentation also included three client testimonies of two mothers and one father who received services at CCWS. In addition to offering pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds, CCWS hosts childbirth classes, parenting classes and virtual Bible studies. Clients may also receive referrals to organizations such as homeless prevention and food assistance programs. Clients who attend car seat safety classes will receive a free car seat upon completion. Families can also use the points they earn from attending classes to “purchase” parenting essentials from the CCWS Parenting Boutique.
CCWS did not close its doors in 2020. Throughout the pandemic, CCWS gave away emergency parenting bags weekly. Each bag contained diapers, wipes, formula and other items that clients requested, such as laundry detergent. There were also three communitywide diaper giveaways in 2020 where anyone could receive free diapers and wipes, which were distributed at the CCWS Coatesville location in a drive-up format. To view the virtual banquet
and to learn about donation options, visit https://give butter.com/ccws. CCWS has been serving county residents as a pregnancy resource center since 1985. It has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 203 S. Walnut St. in Kennett Square and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters

WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.
