Memorial Day was established as an official holiday by Congress in 1971 and it always celebrated on the last Monday of May each year. “The idea of Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, arose from the ashes of the Civil War,” said Trupe. “Since then, Americans have rallied together every year to say thank you and pay tribute to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our attendance today is one small spark that burns across the nation not just today, but every day.” A wreath-laying ceremony to honor fallen soldiers was held, and the wreath was placed by John Mohl, a Korean War veteran, and Leonard Creitz, judge advocate, American Legion Post 537. Mohl also offered remarks about Memorial Day, reading a poem provided by the American Legion: “Far away from all they knew, with hearts of pride and courage true, vowed to serve as freedom’s light, and through their strength our nation’s might. They gave all, our brave defenders, where poppies lie, we will remember.”

Mountains of Pennsylvania. Swarmer’s first book in a series about residents of Emporium is titled “The Essays of the Real and Unknown: The Story of Ruth Ann Kronenwetter Lathrop” and focuses on Ruth Lathrop, a resident of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. “I interviewed Ruth over the last four or five years when I visited her at home and at Tel Hai,” said Swarmer. “Ruth is my late mother’s first cousin, so I’ve known her all my life.” The book details Lathrop’s life through storytelling and photos, which were provided by Lathrop’s niece and daughter-in-law. Lathrop was born in 1934 and attended Pennsylvania State University. She graduated in 1956; she was also selected as the homecoming queen that year. She and her family, including her husband, John, who was a dentist, relocated to West Chester and, in 1969, she was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America by the Junior Century Club of West Chester.

Green Project Grants Awarded The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group has awarded its Green Project grants to 11 more Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500, a total of 63 Lancaster County organizations have received green grants from the group over the past six years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include BethDenny, operating as Indian Market Hives, for planting of various species of wild flowers and

other flora to determine their effect on attracting native pollinators; Landis Woods Nature Preschool, buying a vermicomposter and composting worms to start a vermicomposting program that will supply the preschool’s established organic garden with nutrient-rich fertilizer; and The Edible Classroom, underwriting fees for several first- to fifth-grade students to attend a summer camp at Penn Manor’s Conestoga Elementary School. Lathrop worked for the American Red Cross in West Chester. Later in life, she became a prominent real estate agent in Elverson. “I was the marketing manager for Stoltzfus Enterprises, and they developed the community known as Summerfield,” Lathrop explained. For her efforts, she won the Pyramid Award from the Home Builders Association as the Best Salesperson in Chester and Delaware counties in 1993. The book documents Lathrop’s jobs, which included teaching crafts on a cruise ship and working as a physical education teacher at a high school, where she also coached field hockey and basketball. Lathrop and her husband also traveled around the world, including Japan. Lathrop was the disaster services coordinator for the American Red Cross and has many memories from that time in her life. “We had a snowstorm that closed Route 1 going south out of Oxford. People could not pass, so it became a clog of truckers

and people traveling,” she shared. A disaster center was set up at a church in Oxford, where travelers were able to shelter for the night. “Snowmobilers brought people from their cars to the church,” Lathrop recalled. Lathrop said she was pleased with how the book turned out. “I think (Swarmer) did a marvelous job,” she stated. “The idea was to have the young children in (Emporium) know that even though it is a tiny little town, they (will be) able to succeed.” A portion of book sales is being donated to Hometown Mentors. “(Lathrop) doesn’t want to appear haughty, (but) with HMI being a recipient of some of the profits, it made it easier for her to accept the whole book,” Swarmer added. To learn more about HMI and how to purchase the book, visit www.hometown mentors.com/essays-of-the -real-unknown. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/home townmentorseverywhere.

Memorial Day from pg 1 The invocation was provided by pastor Coleen Painter from Elverson UMC. “We of the Elverson community are here to honor and remember our brothers and sisters who died serving the cause of freedom,” she stated. “We give You thanks for the freedom they fought to preserve and for their sacrifice for love of country.” Members of Elverson Boy Scout Troop 37 led the flagfolding ceremony. Scoutmaster Tom Yost read the meaning of each of the 13 folds of the flag. For example, the first fold is the symbol of life, and the second fold is the symbol of eternal life. The ninth fold is a tribute to

womanhood, and the 10th fold is a tribute to fathers. “The 13th and last fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’” Yost stated. The Scouts then raised the flag on the pole located near the cemetery entrance. The ceremony concluded with the singing of “America the Beautiful.” The day also included a display of military vehicles by D&L Bensinger. Those who contributed to the event included members of Brick Lane Community Church, the Twin Valley Fire Department and Goin’ Postal.

This summer, Penn State Extension’s 4-H program is offering virtual classes for youths ages 8 to 18, including classes on Pennsylvania heritage, babysitting and cooking. The Pennsylvania Heritage Food and Folk Art Virtual Day Camp will run on Monday through Thursday, June 28 to July 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. Students will learn about and prepare Pennsylvania Dutch foods and discuss folk art styles like tole painting, quilting and Fraktur writing. “Once they register, they will receive an email with the supplies they might need and the recipes,” explained Extension educator Kelly Weisner. “They will be interacting with the instructors to work on some of the activities.” She said the class was previously offered in 2020. “This one was created last year when we had to go virtual because of the pandemic,” Weisner noted. “There will be different activities from last year. That way it’s not the same information for the kids.” This camp is free to currently enrolled 4-H members; there will be a fee for new 4-H members. Registration will end on Friday, June 11. To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu /4-h/folk-art. A virtual 4-H Babysitting Special Interest (SPIN) Club will be held daily from Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The club is designed to help prepare youths age 11 and older for babysitting. Topics will include learning characteristics and needs of infants, toddlers and preschoolers, as well as safety and basic first aid. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate

after the last program. “If they go and babysit, they will have the credentials,” noted Weisner. A fee will be charged for the 4-H Babysitting SPIN Club. There is no charge for current 4-H members. Registration information can be found at https://extension.psu.edu /4-h/babysitting-spin. Other virtual programs being offered this summer include a virtual cooking camp, to be held from Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Youths and their families will learn kitchen skills, food safety and nutrition. Participants will have the opportunity to make one recipe each day. This year’s dishes will include sloppy joes and lime-honey fruit salad. Adult supervision is required, and an adult should be working alongside the youth during the entire camp. “(Participants) will receive a list of recipes, ingredients and equipment they need once they register,” Weisner pointed out. “(The organizers) encourage people to cook along with (the instructors).” She added that those who take the class will also learn more about the Pennsylvania 4-H Cooking Challenge. A complete list of 4-H summer programs and registration information is available at https:// extension.psu.edu/programs /4-h/events/all-events. Weisner noted that all of the virtual programs will be presented via a Zoom webinar, so youths will see only the instructors and not the other participants. Youths must be ages 8 to 18 as of Jan. 1 to take part in the classes. “We’re hoping we will be able to offer in-person (activities) later this summer,” Weisner added.
