Local Thrift Stores Open For Business By Francine Fulton

Bargain hunters who have missed visiting their favorite thrift stores during the coronavirus pandemic can now enjoy shopping once again as several local shops have recently reopened. Among the sites now open for business is Freedom Thrift, located behind the Blue Ball Post Office at 114 Ranck Church Road, New Holland. Store hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Mondays from 8 to 9 a.m. the store is open for those who are at high risk for the COVID-19 virus. General manager Dan Fox noted that all shoppers must wear masks or other face coverings while shopping. “We don’t have a certain number (of shoppers at a time), but if (the store) would get too full, I would limit the number of people in,” he said.

Freedom Thrift in New Holland is one of several local thrift stores that recently reopened. All the stores require shoppers to wear face coverings and practice social distancing.

Virtual Fundraiser Benefits The Arc Local Innkeeper’s Pie Recipe By Francine Fulton Spotlighted In National Publication In previous years, The Arc of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that supports people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families, held a walking and running event that took place at West Goshen Community Park in West Chester. During the fundraiser, adults and youths alike walked through bubble stations along a 1-mile course or ran a 5K through adjacent neighborhoods. This year, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event went virtual. After registering online, participants were invited to walk in their own neighborhood, in parks,

On May 1, Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery on Main Street in Terre Hill with her husband, Bruce, posted a photo of red apples hanging from a tree with a riddle: “What kind of apple throws the best parties?” The post invited friends to comment with the answer, which was “gala,” of course. The post was the first of several leading up to May 13, National Apple Pie Day, which celebrates one of America’s favorite desserts. On that day, Jan’s recipe for apple pie, the one she has served at the inn for decades, was spotlighted in an @forbes article, along with See Pie Recipe pg 3

The recipe for apple pie was spotlighted in an @forbes article on May 13, along with recipes from more than a dozen other inns.

Team Samantha, which included (from left) Dave, Samantha and Kathy Bucher, participated in the virtual Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event on May 17 to raise funds for The Arc of Chester County.

The store features a variety of goods, including clothing, linens, lamps, home decor, small appliances, toys and books. “We put new things out every day, and we also have a halfprice color every week,” Fox noted. “That way if the merchandise has been here about four weeks, it will be (marked) half-price.” The store supports Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM), a faithbased, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. “We support ROFM, and the men actually live in the same building as the store on the top two floors,” Fox said. Encouraged To Access Libraries Online With in-person events and activities being canceled indefinitely and public places closed, many things have moved online, including libraries. Whether someone needs a new novel to dive into or wants to watch movies without paying a monthly subscription fee, libraries offer a variety of resources and activities, which may also help people save money. While people are unable to borrow physical books, they can still read (or hear, if they prefer audiobooks) the text straight from a phone or tablet with apps like Libby that are free and connect directly to a library card. College students who will be writing papers can use the school’s library or a local one to score free online access to journals, books, and more. People who feel they are paying for too many streaming services may see if their local library is partnered with platforms like Hoopla and Kanopy, which offer access to a variety of television shows, movies, music, audiobooks, and more. Whether someone has a child studying for next year’s standardized tests, is planning to go to graduate school, or wants to better his or her workplace skills, he or she should see whether the local library is partnered with platforms like LearningExpress Library to help prepare. For teachers or students, there are also free platforms like Shmoop to help with teaching guides and study resources. Language resources are available to anyone who wants to learn a new language. Patrons should look to see if their library offers resources like Mango, Rosetta Stone, or, for children, Little Pim. Libraries bring people and communities together through books, learning, and events, but while in-person interaction is off the table, patrons should determine whether their library offers virtual workshops. Whether it is a story time for children, tai chi, guided meditation, guitar lessons, or anything else, these events are free and may only require a library card. If someone does not have a library can, they can see if their local library is offering applications for e-library cards during this time.

Extension Plans Webinars Penn State Extension has planned two live webinars. For both webinars, the registration deadline is the date of the event, and registration is available by visiting https://exten sion.psu.edu/ and searching for the event name. Rights-of-Way and Integrated Vegetation Management will take place on Wednesday, June 17, from noon to 1 p.m. This event will provide insight and information for vegetation managers in roadside, public utility, DOTs, municipalities, native species land reclamation, and non-agriculture industrial sites. COVID-19 and Nonprofits Impacts and Actions will be held on Thursday, June 25, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused organizations, including nonprofits, to assess their current and future operations. This webinar will provide information relative to the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic has had, and potentially may have, on nonprofit organizations. The program will also cover items that nonprofits should consider and potentially act on now and in the future.

(patrons) to keep them in mind when it’s safe to go back.” Jan noted that the campaign kept her busy at the computer during the months the inn was closed posting teasers about apples and linking them to specific hashtags. “I knew up front the work involved posting to social media each day,” she said, adding that the next promotion will put her garden in the spotlight. Now, Jan is looking forward to the opportunity to make guests comfortable as they visit Lancaster County as soon as that is possible. “My two loves are cooking and gardening, followed by talking to people,” she said, adding that each inn is unique. One aspect of The Artist’s Inn and Gallery is the display of Bruce’s artwork found in the inn. His creations vary from whimsical animals and takes on famous works of art to peaceful winter scenes. More information about the inn may be found by searching for “The Artist’s Inn and Gallery” on Facebook or by visiting www.artistinn.com.

is fresh and in season,” said Jan, who pointed out that her rhubarb was about to be ripe for use at the time. “The third course is the main course, so it’s savory,” she said, noting that soufflés, crepes, quiches, and egg dishes are often on the menu, although sweet dishes such as Belgian waffles or pancakes may also be main courses. The final course is dessert, which in the spring usually includes fresh berries. “I serve chocolate all year,” said Jan. The pie promotion was the brainchild of Marie Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP), of which Jan is a member. “(Coder) wanted to help the B&Bs that are all closed,” said Jan, noting that Coder is known for her part in the Jersey Strong campaign that helped restore business to the Jersey shore after Hurricane Sandy. The idea behind the apple pie promotion was for ALP to help bed-and-breakfasts and small inns shuttered by COVID19 restrictions. “To get the word out that we are still here,” said Jan. Jan noted that she was impressed with the campaign. “It was a very organized approach to putting a spotlight on these small B&Bs that are missing their guests,” she said, “to remind

recipes from more than a dozen other inns. Jan’s recipe, which was passed to her from her mother, Sophie Witkowski, is unusual because it uses heavy cream. “I chose the recipe with heavy cream because we are surrounded by dairy farms,” said Jan. “Most people don’t put cream in an apple pie, so this is a way to promote dairy too.” Jan said her mother, who is now deceased, was an excellent baker, but noted “anybody can make this pie … anybody.” “I make my own crust, but you don’t have to,” said Jan, who explained that the pie is simple, calling for only a few ingredients. “Cut up the apples. Mix cream, sugar, salt, and flour, and put (the pie) in the oven,” she shared. “It’s super easy,” said Jan, who noted that the pie does not have a top crust. The story may be found by searching the internet for “Forbes, 12 charming recipes from the country’s top inns.” The apple pie at The Artist’s Inn and Gallery is served on a seasonal basis to complete the morning meal. “We serve breakfast, and we always serve dessert,” explained Jan, who added that breakfasts at the inn have four courses. The first course includes pastries such as muffins, scones, turnovers, or some other bread. The second course is fruit. “I work with what

The guidelines are designed to supplement, not replace, requirements from any level of government, safety laws, or rules and regulations applicable to a particular industry segment. Restore Chester County is an initiative launched by the county’s COVID-19 Business Task Force, a collaborative of business, economic, education and government leaders formed by the Chester County commissioners in April to focus on reopening and restoring Chester County’s economy in the wake of COVID-19. Chester County businesses have been sharing their innovative ways to safely offer services by emailing the task force at business@chesco.org, and many of those strategies are shared throughout www.RestoreChester County.org in vignettes that feature the business owners and their stories. The stories will be shared in the social media campaign #RestoreChesCo throughout the summer. Chester County businesses and residents are encouraged to share their reopening experiences, tips and insights using the hashtag #RestoreChesCo.

The Chester County commissioners recently launched www.RestoreChester County.org, a comprehensive online toolkit that offers guidelines specifically designed for Chester County’s more than 15,000 businesses and 525,000 residents who moved from the red phase to the yellow phase on June 5. Visitors to the new website will immediately be presented with access to a Business & Org Toolkit as well as a Resident Toolkit. The Business & Org toolkit lists guidelines that span industries, including a checklist for knowing if one’s business is ready, how to get it ready and how to find resources for obtaining personal protective equipment. Business and organizational leaders can also access information for 20 different business and organization sectors, including agriculture, office settings, restaurants, personal care, schools, and religious organizations. All information found on www.RestoreChester County.org is drawn from federal, state and county guidelines. Feedback from Chester County’s nine chambers of commerce and businesses was compared with Pennsylvania mitigation recommendations to make sure the toolkit includes coronavirus

Even though the virtual event has ended, donations are still being accepted. “We were nervous in the beginning having to go virtual, but the community really came through for us and we are still getting donations now,” said, Kelli Martino, development and marketing manager, noting that the fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set by The Arc. The agency hopes to raise that amount by fiscal year end, which is on Tuesday, June 30. Proceeds from The Arc Bubble Walk Run and Fun event will support The Arc of Chester County’s programs and services, which include advocacy, children’s early learning, family support services, employment and transportation. The Arc provides services in Chester County and the surrounding area to 3,000 individuals and families a year. During the stay-at-home order, The Arc offices and preschool have been closed. Other services that have been temporarily suspended include Building the Basics through Learning Experiences (ABBLES) classes for children with autism and adult transportation services and recreation events. However, staff members have been working from home and the agency has continued to operate. “The Arc continues to provide services as much as possible and safely,” said Potts. “Like other businesses and nonprofits, we are unable to do as much as we want or normally (do), but we are ready to (open) as soon as we can - as soon as we get the signal. “Our core mission continues to advocate, to educate and to provide services to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to enhance their quality of life,” he added. areas of Pennsylvania, along with other states, including New Jersey and Delaware and as far away as Massachusetts. Many walkers and runners formed fundraising teams to raise additional dollars for The Arc. The Arc’s executive director, Jeanne Meikrantz, and board president, Stephen Potts, kicked off the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event with live posts on Facebook. “I would like to thank all our sponsors and everyone who made the walk possible virtually this year,” Meikrantz stated. “Now more than ever, families, children, and adults with disabilities and their families are relying on our supports and services.” Meikrantz then blew some ceremonial bubbles and took off for her walk. Potts noted that people ran and walked in different places, but were all united for the same cause. “The Arc Walk, Run and Fun event was an opportunity to be a champion for children and adults with disabilities, and it also made us feel more connected to one another during COVID,” he stated.

The Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland is another thrift store; it opened on May 28. “ We had lines of about 15 people waiting at each of our two front doors (on opening day). They started to line up at 8 a.m., and we open at 9 a.m.,” noted Sherry Duda, general manger. “Everyone is so thrilled to be out and to be able to shop.” The store, which has been cleaned, painted and redecorated over the past several weeks, offers home decor, furniture, antiques, clothing for every season, a vintage section, a yearround Christmas room, jewelry, collectibles and more. Visitors are asked to wear masks or face coverings and practice social distancing. “We have three levels, so people can space out pretty well,” said Duda, noting that the store occupies 44,000 square feet of space. Twelve weeks after moving to essential services-only, Chester County Government and courts reopened the doors again of county facilities on Market Street and Westtown Road, as well as the Magisterial District Courts throughout the county. However, officials note they are proceeding with caution and have set restrictions to ensure the safety of staff members and the public as the county continues to try to control the impact of the coronavirus.

The reopenings are a result of of the county’s move to the yellow phase. All Chester County courts and court-related staff returned to work on June 2 as court functions of the Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts are being restored. Jury trials are currently planned to resume in August. All Chester County government staff members who are unable to work from home to provide county programs and services returned to work on June 5. All staff members who can work from home will continue to do so. With the county’s own Health Department and Department of Emergency Services to guide them, county senior staff members have invested in

equipment and developed procedures to start the yellow phase with necessary precautions. New procedures include screening everyone who enters a county building, wearing masks and practicing social distancing, as well as maintaining hygiene and cleaning procedures. Additional mitigation strategies are currently being reviewed and refined by county departments, including appointment-only access by the public, secure drop boxes and transitioning to virtual interactions. Details of the limited inperson and online programs and services for Chester County residents are available at www.chesco.org. More specific information on individual department services available

during the yellow phase will be posted on department-specific web pages on the aforementioned website. Residents needing to interact in person with county departments are encouraged to call ahead or visit the website to obtain details, including requirements they must follow when visiting a county facility. The county is awaiting guidance on the reopening of the Chester County Library and Henrietta Hankin Library from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries. The Chester County Conservation District also reopened to public access on June 5, and anyone requiring this service should call 610-925-4920 prior to his or her visit.

Tips For Safer Online Shopping Posted either a little padlock icon on the left side of the search bar and/or if the URL says “https,” including the “s.” This layer of security is essential when shopping online and sharing personal information. If the site is not secured or the URL only features “ http,” the browser may point this out in the search bar. Shoppers should take steps to protect themselves when accessing personal information and shopping online, and they should be sure to use security software and firewalls to keep their information secure. W hile sitting at a coffee shop on a laptop is temporarily out of the question, people should still avoid accessible public Wi-Fi networks to make sure no one can potentially access their information. An easy way to keep personal information secure is to change passwords every three to six months to reduce the chances

of someone accessing one’s information. Online safety not only means using secure sites and networks, but it also means that shoppers should use a secure method of payment when making purchases online. By paying with a credit card or PayPal, shoppers are adding a layer of consumer protection that can guard them against fraud. However, shoppers should not get a false sense of security, and, if they notice any suspicious activity on their credit card, they should contact their provider immediately. Individuals should also be wary of any promotional emails they receive from an unfamiliar sender. They should delete any suspicious emails, even ones that look like they could be legitimate as criminals may use this scheme to convince recipients to provide personal information. People may also

get a virus on their computer simply by opening scam emails, so they should be cautious. In addition to emails that are clearly from unfamiliar senders, individuals should be on the lookout for phishing emails disguised as if they came directly from family members, co-workers, or others the recipient knows. If the message looks strange, readers can double-check the sender address to see if it is actually from the person it says it is from. The recipient should delete the message immediately if it is actually not from a person they know. Shoppers should not purchase price gouged goods like health and medical supplies. If they notice an unusually high markup on an item like hand sanitizer online, they should not buy it. Instead, readers can learn more about how to report price gouging via www.justice.gov/coronavirus.

To help shoppers safely navigate online shopping, several tips are offered by TopCashback.com. The recommendations include steering clear of suspicious websites, verifying URLs, avoiding unsecured networks and devices, using protected payment methods, being alert for phishing emails, and looking out for price gouging scams. Even when simply shopping for household essentials or face masks, shoppers may come across a variety of sites. However, if they see one that seems questionable, has an outdated design, and/or has multiple pop-up windows, it may not be from a legitimate retailer. People should refrain from making any purchases on these types of sites to ensure that their personal information does not become compromised. Even if a website looks and seems legitimate, shoppers should be sure to check for
