Twin Valley High school celebrates graduation

TheTwin Valley High School (TVHS) Class of 2023 held its graduation on June 4 during commencement ceremonies held at the Santander Arena in Reading.

The valedictorian was Benjamin Meister of Birdsboro, the son of Todd Meister and Missi Cooper. The co-salutatorians were Anthony Engle of Birdsboro, the son of Nathan Engle and Sylvia Engle, and Rebecca Goldman of Honey Brook, the daughter of Joel and Lisa Goldman.

Anthony offered opening remarks and welcomed those in attendance. He also spoke of how the students succeeded despite the pandemic. “Not only did we find a new mental toughness, but the pandemic taught us to never take normalcy for granted,” he stated. “It deepened our relationships with our friends and family, and we found a new appreciation for our everyday freedoms.”

Honey Brook Lions Club distributes grants

Each year, members of the Honey Brook Lions Club award grants to local nonprofit organizations in the Honey Brook area. During the most recent check presentation ceremony, held on June 8 at the Lions Club Community Center, the club gave away grants totaling $16,595. and hard decisions. As long as you keep moving forward, one step after the next, you’ll have (a story) to tell,” she stated. “So be sure when you step, step with care and great tact and remember that life’s a great balancing act. As Dr. Seuss suggested, you have been writing a story of ‘all the places you’ll go.’”

TVHS principal Bill Clements listed the accomplishments of the Class of 2023, including honors and awards at state and national competitions in FFA and the Technology Student Association. He also acknowledged TVHS student musicians, student artists and members of the theater arts club.

He added that the seniors planned spirit weeks, a powderpuff game, a junior-senior prom and homecoming. They collected items for food banks, provided holiday gifts for children and raised funds for local charities. “In a remarkable campaign, the Mini-THON (members) shattered their goal and their previous records by collecting over $53,000 for the kids, supporting families and funding research in the fight against pediatric cancer,” Clements reported.

Benjamin provided the final remarks to the graduates. “Remember that success is not measured solely by material wealth or professional achievements. True success lies in making a difference in the lives of others, finding joy and leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and kindness,” he said. “Today we stand here looking out in the world, brimming with endless possibility. Let’s embrace the future with open hearts and open minds, armed with the knowledge and experience we have gained. Congratulations, Class of 2023. May your journey be filled with purpose, fulfillment and an unwavering commitment to make the world a better place.”

Other student speakers were class president Josh Phillips, vice president Paige Borkowski, treasurer Jaden Brighter, secretary Makayla Biddle and class speaker Emma McBride. Superintendent Patrick Winters and school district board president Gary McEwen also offered remarks.

Elverson sets Day in the Park

Live music, children’s activities and food will be some of the features of Elverson Day in the Park, which will take place on Saturday, June 24, at Livingood Park on South Chestnut Street in Elverson. Events will begin at 5 p.m. and end with a giant firework display at approximately 9 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, June 25.

Musical performances will kick off the evening. “We are beginning with singer Carol Ruffner and her band at 5 p.m. They are the opening act,” said Mayor Esther Prosser, a member of the Elverson Day in

the Park committee. “(Singer) John Barnett will follow.”

The culminating musical act will be the West Chester Swing Kings, known for their repertoire of music by artists such as Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. The fireworks will begin after the group’s last song.

Food will be offered by Giovanni’s Pizza and Pasta of Elverson, along with food vendors, including Suburban Brewing Company of Honey Brook, a farm-to-table food truck and Kona Ice. Local Boy Scouts will sell hot dogs and soft pretzels.

Honey Brook Library offers Summer Reading Program

Patrons of all ages are invited to sign up for the Summer Reading Program, themed “All Together Now,” at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. The program began on June 3 and will end on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Participants are asked to pick up their Summer Reading Program packages at the library to register and then start reading. Those who bring in their reading log weekly will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing to earn prizes. Those who bring in a nonperishable food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry will earn one extra ticket. Reading logs are customized for various age groups. “Elementary

school students should read for a minimum of 30 minutes three times each week,” explained Therese Mauchline, programming librarian. “For preschoolers, someone should read to them, and we have a photo that they can color in. Young adults (YA) have to read three YA books or seven graphic novels each week to get their ticket. Adults can earn a ticket when they read two books.”

Three gift baskets will be given out in each age group through a random drawing. The preschoolers’ baskets contain items such as toys, stuffed animals and games. The school age prize is a Lego kit basket. Adult prize baskets include gift cards, tickets to Longwood Gardens and gift certificates to local restaurants.

“All of the prize baskets contain books,” noted Mauchline. The drawing for the prizes will be on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Also as part of the program, activities will be offered throughout the summer.

New this year is Family Baking with Ms. Therese, which will be offered by Mauchline on Tuesdays, June 27 and July 11 and 25, at 6 p.m. Open to children in grades one through six, the program aims to teach attendees how to use math by measuring the ingredients needed for baking. Dry ingredients will be provided to take home and bake after adding milk, eggs and other items.

Also new this summer is Magic: The Gathering Club on Saturdays, June 24,

Local organizations serve the community

During a recent meeting of the Honey Brook Women’s Club, several local nonprofit organizations were presented with a donation. Representatives from the various groups were also given an opportunity to talk about their charitable work.

Steve Kern, fire chief at the Honey Brook Fire Company, reported that the all-volunteer organization receives an average of nearly one emergency call a day. “We have been pretty busy the last couple of months,” he said. “The area is continuing to grow, and our services are needed more. We also give mutual aid to 11 different fire companies.”

Matt Welch, battalion chief of Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS, spoke about the importance of offering public safety training. “We have been focusing a lot on community outreach. We had a community CPR class, and we got 30 people who learned CPR and basic first aid,” he

said. “We like to think that we are the first responders, but we’re not. The first people that help are the friends, neighbors and family members. The more training we can get to everybody out there … it could potentially save lives.”

Jennifer Spade, director of the Honey Brook Community Library, noted that the library is currently in the initial phases of an expansion project, thanks to a $1.14 million state grant provided by Sen. Katie Muth. “We are going from a rectangle to a U (shape building),” she explained. “One part of the U will be a community room and the other side will be all children’s and young adults (books). The existing library will become the adult (section). It’s pretty exciting.”

Ivan Stoltzfus, who runs the Steeple to People ministry, explained that the program serves people in need by helping them spir-

itually and financially. “Last year, we helped over 100 families with their rent. Some were homeless,” he said.

The organization raises funds through the Steeple to People gift shop, which is run by volunteers, including Ivan’s wife, Anna. Proceeds from the shop, 4670 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, also go to the Honey Brook Youth Center, which provides activities such as arts and crafts, basketball and pingpong. Becky Zeeger, the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP) volunteer coordinator, spoke about the pantry, which serves residents of the Twin Valley School District. “We serve around 140 families (at each distribution), and we serve twice a month,” she explained.

HBFP volunteer Bridget Lillis added that the clients of the pantry receive more than food items during distributions. “We have a wellness

tent with a dietitian, and they can get their blood pressure checked. We have an under-4 program, so we give out diapers, wipes, food and educational materials,” she said.

Other services provided by the HBFP include a backpack program, which supplies extra food to children on the weekend, and a gardening program. During distributions, a Legal Aid representative is available to answer questions, and clients can choose items from the Anchored Ministries mobile clothing closet. For children, there will be face painting, a barrel train, T-shirt painting, a petting zoo and a moon bounce. “New this year will be a scavenger hunt,” noted Prosser.

For sale in the park will be Elverson T-shirts. The T-shirts, available in green and tan, bear Elverson’s nickname, “The Greatest Square Mile.” “We will also be selling an Elverson history book, ‘Elverson, Our Community’ by Bob Patry. He was a wonderful historian,” said Prosser.

Twin Valley Fire Department will bring emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, and there will be an exotic animal show by Allison Ueland from Party Animals Express.

In addition, vendors will be on hand offering items for sale, and there will be displays by local organizations. “We will have close to 20 different local vendors,” Prosser noted.

Elverson Day in the Park is always held on the last Saturday in June. The tradition began in 2011 when Elverson residents celebrated the borough’s centennial by gathering at Livingood Park on a Saturday at the end of June. The event has been held each year since, with the exception of 2020, when the event was canceled because of the pandemic.

March. “We meet monthly, and the last meeting is always at the park to (finalize plans),” Prosser noted. “I have a great young committee with kids of their own, so they know what kids like.”

To kick off the day, Anchored Ministries will hold the third annual Elverson Community 5K and 1-mile fun run in the park. Blind, the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley, Beacon Lodge and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The Lions Club holds fundraisers to support the organizations. “We raise money throughout the year, and at the end of Lions year, which is June 30, we give it away to local organizations, some to international organizations and two scholarship winners from Twin Valley High School,” explained Honey Brook Lions Club member Art Pecht, Pennsylvania district governor. He added that the club raised money this past

The Chester County Ag Council has published the new edition of “The Chester County Farm Guide.” This publication features the county’s diverse array of farms and locally grown products from artisan cheeses, flowers, and wine to heirloom tomatoes, meats, and eggs. The guide, highlighting over 125 family-owned farms and markets, includes a map and farm addresses, plus a chart that indicates what is currently in season.

In this year’s guide, Farmer of the Year Jamie Hicks of Hicks IV in Cochranville cites sustainability and innovation as his primary business drivers. He sees opportunity in new

markets and customers, including the hemp industry and partnering with online retailers looking for environmentally friendly packaging materials. But first and foremost, Hicks focuses on the soil health of the thousands of acres he leases.

The “Chester County Farm Guide” also celebrates the vibrant network of Chester County farmers and service providers who serve as the backbone of the local food system. Among the featured entities is Avon Grove Charter School’s Micro-Farm, which is making a big impact on over 1,000 students a year from the Avon Grove, Oxford, Coatesville, Kennett, Octorara, and

In addition to raising money, the club presents an annual Halloween Parade, a Breakfast with Santa and an Easter egg hunt - all of which are free and open to the community.

The club collects eyeglasses as part of a Lions Clubs International program. There are collection boxes in front of the Lions building and one at Eby’s General Store in Honey Brook. As part of the program, donated lenses are cleaned and repurposed.

The club also sponsors a Leo Club at Twin Valley middle and high schools, as well as Honey Brook Boy Scout and Cub Scout Pack 9, which meet at the community center.

The Lions Club, which has approximately 30 members including lifetime members, meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the community center. Prospective members are welcome to attend.

Micro-Farm manager and agriculture teacher Krista Lauterwald works with her fellow teachers and school administration to weave farming into everyday curricula with hands-on experiences like caring for the school’s livestock, “Bee Academy,” and hydroponic garden systems in the greenhouse.
