Twin Valley High School Celebrates Graduation BY FRANCINE FULTON

he Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Class of 2021 celebrated its graduation on June 5 during commencement ceremonies held at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. The event featured a series of speakers, a review of the class’ successes through the years and reflections about what life was like as a high school student during a pandemic. The valedictorian was Malavika Nair, the daughter of Lakshmi Unnikrishnan and Pradeep Prabhakar of Morgantown, and the salutatorian was Conner Lawler, the son of John and Helene Lawler of Elverson. Conner opened the graduation ceremony by comparing the senior class’s high school journey to the game Dungeons and Dragons. “(In Dungeons and Dragons) there are three main adventures, heroes and a grand finale,” Conner said. He

“I have no doubt that the friendships we have forged will stick with us for the rest of our lives.” Other speakers included class president Lauren Brown, vice president Ben Williams, secretary Katherine Hafer, treasurer Molly Stevens, superintendent Dr. Patrick Winters, school board president Gary McEwen and class speaker Alex Brown.

Alex talked about attending school virtually. “Who would have thought you could be in class in your underwear, and no one would know?” he asked, adding, “Although the pandemic has affected us negatively, the diploma we hold in our hands today shows that with dedication, passion and perseverance, anything is possible.” TVHS principal William Clements listed the accomplishments of the Class of 2021, including awards and honors won by students in FFA and Technology Students of America, being able to present a school musical and other performances despite the pandemic and the achievements of student artists and studentathletes. “Against remarkable odds, the school Mini-THON collected more than $30,000 to help fight the end to pediatric cancer, which is a school record,” Clements said.

David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit charity created to help veterans, was the recipient of the 2021 American Spirit Award presented by the Veterans Health Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Jennifer Lilly, chief of voluntary service for the Coatesville VA Medical Center, nominated DD831 for the work it does to improve the lives of veterans, including those who reside at the center and others who live in the community. There were 70 nominees total nationwide.

The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2. The contest will be held in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to anyone who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging is based on several criteria, including appropriateness to contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and the garment’s conveying and promoting the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. Contestants will be divided into age categories. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of

the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. The winner in the Junior division, for youths ages 13 to 16, and the winner in the Senior division, for those ages 17 to 24, will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest to be held in San Diego in January 2022. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric/yarn used. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel at 717-2741197 or linda@lebaweb.com. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Do you prefer audiobooks, ebooks or actual books? Spade: I prefer to read an actual book. I always have a big stack of library books at home to read. Long: I still favor books over electronic print. However, I love audiobooks and I have been relaxing in the evening listening to stories, particularly music biographies. Next to books, music is my passion. I sometimes will have the audiobook on while following along with the print copy. I am a very audio/visual person. Both the Village Library, 207 N. Twin Valley from pg 1 Malavika concluded the ceremony by offering her thoughts, which centered on the theme of gratitude. “It is important to thank those who have changed our lives. Our families, whether it is those related to us by blood or those we have chosen, have impacted us greatly,” she stated. “I implore all of you to thank whoever you call family.” “While it is a sad thing that

our time together is coming to a close, I have no doubt that the friendships we have forged will stick with us for the rest of our lives,” she said to her classmates. “We will never forget each other.” Jocelyn Hittle, who will be a senior this fall at TVHS and who writes poetry for the Twin Valley Labyrinth, the TVHS literary magazine, was on hand to observe the ceremony,

which took place in a minor league ballpark - a unique venue. “As each student rounded home base - diploma in hand - they officially crossed over into adulthood, into their future adventures and into the rest of their lives,” she said. To view the entire TVHS graduation ceremony, visit www.youtube.com and search for “Class of 2021 - Twin Valley High School Graduation.”

To celebrate the recent International Tea Day, the Heritage of Green Hills threw a pop-up Mad Hatter Tea Party, complete with iced tea, snacks, games and crazy hats. Cheryl Anderson, director of wellness at the healthy life plan community in Shillington, said that the unexpected pop-up parties had been held all spring and would continue into the summer. Anderson only gave residents a day’s warning to find or make a Mad Hatterstyle hat in preparation for the outdoor celebration. In addition, attendees were challenged to take cards from a “Do Something Kind” deck, which included suggestions like “Be kind to yourself,” “Post three sticky notes of uplifting messages in a public bathroom,”

Chester County K-9 Achieves Police Day In The Park from pg 1 For more information Children who complete the Canine Therapy Certification various activities in the park about Elverson Day in the canines and an organization whose standards are accepted in federal court. She noted that therapy K-9s provide comfort and support in prisons, in courtrooms and for victims in interview rooms. “We felt they needed certification for tasks specific to dogs in law enforcement. Tests needed to ensure that uses of dogs are policy driven,” said Ruopp. “There are civilian organi-

zations that provide certifications for other therapy dogs, but law enforcement K-9s perform different tasks in different situations and environments.” Pickell reported on her canine’s reaction to the event: “Marley is unfazed at the prospects of celebrity status after achieving this first certification. For him, it’s another happy day of work at the office.”

Comfort K-9 Marley and his handler, Sgt. Janis Pickell of the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO), recently became the nation’s first canine team to achieve Police Service Therapy/Comfort K-9 certification through the United States Police Canine Association Inc. (USPCA). The accreditation incorporates the first national standards and testing of a police comfort dog’s temperament and skills, as well as handler knowledge. This past winter, Pickell wondered if there was a way to determine if she and Marley were providing the best service possible. That same week, she was contacted by certified K-9 trainer Sgt. Paul Bryant Jr., head of the CCSO’s K-9 unit. Bryant sent Pickell an article about a new, national certification program and encouraged her to apply. She did, and the 18-year veteran of the CCSO and her English black Labrador partner began a new regimen. Refining skills of bonding and obedience practiced since they became partners in January 2020, Pickell helped Marley learn to encounter and respond calmly to people with diverse life situations and in noisy spaces. The entire CCSO got into the act, under the expertise of Bryant. Six fellow K-9-handler partners from the award-winning CCSO K-9 team and the civil office staff helped Marley socialize with other animals, strangers and bystanders. A deputy in a wheelchair and a civilian staff member using a knee scooter after surgery acclimated Marley to mobility devices. Visits to the CCSO’s squad room taught Marley about different levels of noise and activity. Visits to eating areas gave him practice ignoring food that was not his. He became accustomed to riding an elevator. In each situation, Marley honed skills and acquired fans. The CCSO quickly became an important law enforcement agency in the USPCA initiative. Now that the first program is over, Bryant is providing feedback to help the USPCA finetune requirements. This certification is the first for law enforcement therapy dogs in the United States, according to Melinda Ruopp, national secretary of the USPCA, the largest governing body of police

David’s Drive from pg 1 DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the VA Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer DD831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. Among its many efforts, DD831 collects underwear and socks for veterans, provides holiday gifts for veterans at its annual gift-wrapping event and donates beds and other supplies to previously homeless veterans who are moving into transitional housing. Veterans have also enjoyed fishing outings and a trip to see an Eagles preseason game through the efforts of DD831 volunteers. David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive, reported that the national award came as a

Later, the Turners took part in a virtual awards ceremony, where they were featured in a segment that they prerecorded. Pennsylvania’s venomous snake season runs from June 12 through Saturday, July 31. With this season in mind, Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary has created a YouTube video encouraging people to watch out for snakes and informing them about the reptiles. Rothacker stresses that snakes are not easy to see, often do not want to hurt people, and do not want to be stepped on. To view the video, search for “Copperheads and Roller Skates” on www.youtube.com. The Forgotten Friend Reptile TV channel on YouTube has a number of other informational videos, as well.
