Because the annual David’s Drive picnic and clothing collection, which was scheduled for May 17, was canceled due to COVID-19, the David’s Drive 831 (DD831) charity instead held an underwear drive on Flag Day, June 14, at East Fallowfield Park. The David’s Drive 831 charity held an underwear drive on Flag Day, June 14, at East Fallowfield Park, collecting approximately $10,000 worth of men’s and women’s underwear, socks and T-shirts for veterans in need. The charity also announced that St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing on July 13 at Applecross Country Club, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit David’s Drive.

Restaurants Open For Outdoor Dining 4-H To Offer Virtual, Interactive

Forty-eight percent of the world's mail volume is handled by the Postal Service.

With the local area recently transitioning from the yellow to green phase, many local restaurants are offering outdoor dining opportunities for customers. Lickity Split, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, is now offering outdoor seating that has been set up on the lawn of Trinity Lutheran Church, located adjacent to the restaurant. Currently, hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the tables are also open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tables are reserved for Lickity Split customers. Each table is numbered and has a full food and ice cream menu available, and ordering instructions are included. For more details, readers may visit www.lickitysplit.info or call 717-354-4986.

During fiscal year 2019, USPS employees traveled 1.34 billion miles to deliver mail, equivalent to 53,640 laps around Earth, 5,305 trips to the moon or about 15 trips to the sun. *Based on the average moon and sun distance.

including virtual day camps and selfguided activities. The virtual camps are being offered free of charge for any youths ages 8 to 10 who are currently enrolled in the Pennsylvania 4-H program. For youths who are not 4-H members, there will be a one-time fee, which includes 4-H membership. The online programs are being offered in lieu of inperson camps held throughout the county, including those at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. “At this time, everything will be virtual,” said Logan Hall, Extension educator. Registration is currently underway for virtual summer day camps and self-guided activities being offered by the Penn State Extension 4-H Youth Development program. Topics will include computer science, babysitting, pets and plant science.

According to David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president, the donation drive was a success. “We just provided a safe dropoff for people because veterans need this stuff,” Turner said. “People were very generous. We ended up receiving donations with an estimated (worth) of $10,000. We didn’t expect much, but people came through.” Traditionally, the clothing drive is held at the Turners’ home. As part of

in three words that have one meaning. Turner pointed out that the charity has remained active during the coronavirus pandemic by purchasing and packing nonperishable food items that were then delivered to local at-risk veterans. Over the course of six weeks, David’s Drive donated 450 bags, totaling $6,000 worth of food. “When the weather cooperated, we met at the park, but for the last couple weeks we (sorted the food) at the Great Hall at the VA as opposed to putting (the bags) together at the park, Turner

the event, a complimentary lunch is provided to all those who bring donations. The first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, on what would have been David’s 21st birthday. David was employed at the Coatesville VA when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer David’s Drive 831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The American Association of University Women West Chester - Chester County branch presented the Gateway to Equity Award to the West Chester University Resource Pantry managed by Pam Frontino.

The West Chester University (WCU) Resource Pantry has received the Gateway to Equity Award for 2020-21 from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester - Chester County branch. The annual award honors an individual, group or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. The Resource Pantry’s mission is to eliminate barriers to degree completion for students with financial need by providing access to resources, while empowering students to learn independent living skills and

achieve long-term stability. Pam Frontino, associate director of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs at WCU, manages the pantry. She explained that the program has grown from a small closet of food supplies to four rooms of dedicated space at the university, serving more than 200 students per week. The Chester County Food Bank, churches and community organizations, such as AAUW, regularly contribute nonperishable items, fresh produce, clothing items and monetary donations to the pantry. The pantry is open to all undergraduate students at WCU, regardless of their need level. No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are welcome at any time during

the hours of operation. The Resource Pantry also offers educational workshops on financial literacy, food preparation, applying for government assistance programs and social service aids provided in partnership with financial, career development and other programs at WCU. While the campus was on lockdown, the pantry provided packages of prepared items.

He noted that 4-H activities continued during the stay-athome order. For example, the annual summer beef show normally held in early June at the 4-H Center was done virtually. “During COVID-19, a lot of our 4-H clubs have been meeting virtually. They are still active and still involved. 4-H has not stopped by any means,” Hall stated. “We are still providing educational opportunities. It’s just virtual right now.” Each camp and self-guided activity will require youths to have access to a computer, tablet or smart device. “We will use Penn State Zoom, so it does have it additional security factors,” Hall explained. The following day camps will be offered. “Pennsylvania Heritage Foods and Folk Art,” which will highlight German recipes and crafts, will be held from Monday, July 6, through Thursday, July 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. “From Farm to Fork,” which will emphasize the role that agriculture plays in

everyday life, will be offered from Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16, from 9 to 10 a.m. “Computer Science: Think … Plan … Play!” will be held from July 13 to 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Also offered from July 13 to 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. will be “Babysitting Basics.” “Take the Bait and Go Outdoors!” will be held from Monday, July 20, through Thursday, July 23, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. In this camp, participants will learn the basics of fishing, orienteering and fish and wildlife identification. Also held from July 20 to July 23 will be “Pet Parade” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. In this camp, youths will learn how to take care of different pets and the responsibility of being a pet owner. “Science Fun in Your Kitchen,” which will include performing science experiments with common ingredients found in the household, will be offered from Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, from 9 to

“Cloverbud STEM 4-H Project,” July 27 through July 31. “Once kids register for a session, the staff member will reach out to them and provide them a list of materials that they would need - most of them will easily be found in the home and should not require additional purchase,” Hall explained. “If there are unique materials needed, they will be mailed out to kids prior to the start.” Youths can register for as many of the virtual day camps and self-guided activities as desired. Preregistration is required. For more information or to register, readers may contact the Penn State Extension Chester County office by calling 610-696-3500 or emailing ChesterExt@psu.edu.

AAUW Awards Scholarship “If there is a single word that describes the Alice Lawson Scholarship winner, Mykia Bridgett, it’s ‘determined,’” said Deb Liczwek, cochair of the scholarship committee along with Diane Dougherty. Bridgett received a $1,500 scholarship to West Chester University (WCU) from the West Chester - Chester County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The scholarship is awarded annually by the AAUW to a nontraditional female student. It is named for the late Alice Lawson, a lifelong AAUW member who joined AAUW branches wherever she and her husband moved. Lawson had a special empathy for young women who faced financial challenges in pursuing a college degree. Lawson was offered an opportunity to enroll in college by a nun at Seton College when her family did not have money for college after educating her four older siblings and the Depression came along.

Mykia Bridgett Bridgett started her journey in higher education in 1993. Marriage and children interrupted her schooling, and, for a time, she fostered children in addition to raising her own children. She adopted a foster child who is now 15 years old. Still, she did not give up her dream of pursuing higher education. Bridgett enrolled in Community College of Philadelphia, earning her Associate of Arts with high honors in 2009. That fall, she enrolled at Temple University in the Bachelor of Social Work program but was unable to continue because she had reached the maximum in allowed loans. Again, she persevered, working to clear her debt. In 2019, Bridgett enrolled at WCU, where her academic adviser rates her as exceptional in all areas, including initiative, motivation, reliability, creativity, leadership, communications skills and intellectual abilities. Bridgett’s adviser praised her for her “extraordinary social justice and advocacy skills,” in addition to her “strong commitment to and knack for academic excellence.” Bridgett said her experience as a mother and foster mother have shaped her educational path and choice of career. Her hope is to provide a group home for teenagers who are about to age out of the foster system, but who have few plans for their futures. Bridgett’s daughter is a student at the University of Virginia on a full academic scholarship and is scheduled to graduate in 2021. “Even if my daughter beats me to the punch and graduates first, I will proceed,” said Bridgett. “After graduation, I hope to pay it forward to someone else.”
